Anne Books

I've been slowly picking up Anne Stuart's backlist. This one's from 1993, and it won the 1994 RITA award for Best Futuristic/Fantasy/Paranormal Romance. It was well-deserved.

Emerson MacVey was a ruthless, greedy, uncaring man, until he had a massive heart attack and died at the age of 32. Now, 17 months after his death, he has one last chance of avoiding hell--he'll return to earth in another body, and within one month, he has to make amends to 3 people whose lives he destroyed. The fine print: he gets 3 miracles--one per person, and there'll be someone there to keep an eye on him, and he can't tell anyone who he is or why he's there.

The first person, and the only one whose name he's told, is Carrie Alexander. She'd been his secretary for 3 months, and he fired her on Christmas Eve. She was also the only person who'd cried when he died.

Carrie had thought she'd seen the good hidden under Emerson's cold exterior, and she'd fallen in love with him. And when her hometown's only industry was collapsing, she thought she saw a way to help both him and her town, since his business was buying and selling businesses. Instead, he bought it and closed it down, dooming the town, and broke her heart.

Now she's being eaten up by the guilt, and making amends in the only way she can think of--being the town's resident angel.

So when Gabriel Falcone's car ran into a ditch near Angel Falls, Carrie was the one who looked after him.

Falling Angel is a sweet story of love and redemption, sort of a cross between A Christmas Carol and Heaven Can Wait. But it avoids the saccharine sappiness of so many Christmas redemption romances, by making the emotions real rather than forced, and by giving both characters real dilemmas instead of simply the expected self-sacrifice.

Carrie's not just your usual milquetoast altruistic heroine, and Emerson/Gabriel isn't just your usual hero who only seems unfeeling because he hasn't yet learned to love. They're a lot more 3-dimensional than that. The rest of the town is likewise real, and because of that, you care about what happens to them.

This is, I think, the quintessential Christmas romance--it's what so many stories aspire to, but so few completely achieve.

I love re-reading this book. Redemption and remorse are strong themes - but overall there is a comforting feel about the book. I'm not sure whether it's because it's set in a loving town at Christmas or whether it's because the characters are all so heart-warming, but there is definitely a cosy, loving feel tot his book. It's one of Anne Stuart's lighter romances but definitely up there with the best!

This is a story that is, in a word, hilarious but also sad. Loved this novel, its premise is rather stretching the imagination a bit, but yet you don't seem to mind. Emerson is the "Ebenezer Scrooge of the 20th Century" who like Scrooge is able to mend his ways. This story is warm, and yet a little heartbreaking at the same time. Tremendously funny book ... love Emerson's guardian (the old woman)... she is a hoot! Great book for being a romance!

The book begins with Emerson Wyatt MacVey III being in Heaven for 17 months after dieing of a heart attach. He has not changed from his greedy,selfish and self centeredness he possessed while on Earth.He is sent back to Earth with an assignment to right the wrongs he was responsible for when he was alive. He goes back as Gabriel Falconi with a new appearance and new identity.

Gabriel works very hard to accomplish his assignment because he is being weighted in the balance to see if he will be allowed to return to Heaven or will he be sent to "that other place".

Gabriel's character shows both sides of the human nature.The reader is able to feel the emotions (or lack of)in MacVey's personality which is typical of many people but also the warm,loving and caring personality of Gabriel which is found in most everyone.

I enjoyed reading the book very much.It really made me stop and think about what I am doing to others while I am alive because,in reality,I do not think I will have a second chance.

Anne Stuart ( one of my favourite writers) gives us a touching story of second chances. And as usual, Stuart is the BEST at the bad boy being redeemed by love. Emerson Wyatt McVey was a ruthless corporate executive that destroyed hundreds, maybe thousands of lives by closing factories. On a Wintry holiday night, his car goes off the road and he dies, but he is given once chance to come back as another man and make right three lives he destroyed. Carrie Alexander is one of those he destroyed and it is through her love McVey will be redeemed or not. A beautiful holiday tale, with Fallen Angel being a special special Stuart tale.

This is an excellent book, especially if you are writing a book set in the Highlands and need cultural information that is often left out of history books. It was very interesting and enjoyable to read (not stuffy). The most informative book on customs/culture of the Highlands I've found.

A brief but inclusive text, Folklore of the Scottish Highlands provides exactly that: and overview of clan lore, information on second sight, witchcraft, social customs, life and death, and seasonal cycles all as they related to the customs and folklore of the Scottish Highlands. For those that have done other research on traditional Celtic/Scottish culture and religions, much of Ross's text will be familiar as her sources include Carmichael and Campbell, two of the most important authors in the field. Ross does, however, narrow down the field of study to just the highlands, making this a useful resource for the reader interested in localized information. Her information on seasonal religious practices is particularly useful.

The book's first section, "Clan Lore," is specific to the Scottish Highlands and unlike anything I've seen in books on this and similar topics. Ross connects fairly ancient practices to fairly modern practices, in part through the clan system. She also discusses the primary attributions and functions of the clan, and how these attributions interact with religion and folklore. This section will be particularly useful to the reader interested in narrowing his research to a more specific location. It does, however, cross over some traditional boundaries in time and practice, and so it needs to be read carefully and with a grain of salt.

Much of the rest of the book will be familiar to those that have read Campbell and Carmichael, and Ross fails to add much in the way of new or insightful commentary. She does, however, restrict her purview to the highlands, again making the book useful to the reader who wishes to localize his study. The section on witchcraft, while definitely folklore inspired/corrupted by Christianity, is more complete than corresponding sections in similar texts. Ross also include a handful of illustrations of varying usefulness that are scattered throughout the text.

As mentioned, the section of seasonal and religious practices is defiantly the most useful and complete of the book. Unlike many authors in the same field, Ross does a more than adequate job of summarizing various sources and practices into a coherent text on each of the subjects she talks about. This will help the reader put other research into context and gain a greater understanding on seasonal/religious practices in Scotland as a whole. All in all, I do recommend this book, but not very highly. It is an interesting and fast read with a few useful sections, but on the whole it lacks the depth, analysis, and new content of similar books by authors in the field. It's a good book to borrow or to wait to buy, and I would recommend other books and authors ahead of it.

Anne Ross gives a wonderful introduction to the lore of the Scottish Highlands and the Isles. She covers Clan lore, Second Sight and the Seer, Witchcraft both black and white, Folk cures, meaning of omens and social customs. The covers the festivals dates through the year and gives you a nifty list of Folk Museums, with drawings and maps to aid the readers unfamiliar with Scotland. Gaelic speaking, Celtic scholar and archaeologists, she brings her knowledge to bear on looking at death rights, and try to remove the veneer of Christianity and look at the origins in Pagan customs that date back to the dawn of time.

Its a small book only 170 pages, but she does a wonderful job bringing this part of All Things Scottish into the spotlight.

Highly Recommended.

Anne Ross, in the tradition of F. Marian McNeill, has done a superb job in recording the core facets of Scottish Highland beliefs and customs. Covering such topics as the mystical elements surrounding Scottish clan lore, seers and the second sight, witchcraft (with the a thorough scholarly distinction made between white and black magic in Scottish tradition), cures/omens/taboos and social customs, as well as a wonderful exploration of Highland "death teachings" and cosmologies, The Folklore of the Scottish Highlands is one of those texts that will forever be looked back to. I wholeheartedly recommend it.

Like a beautiful fruit, what lies beneath the peel is most revealing and rewarding. And, no one has done a better job of revealing old Scottish customs and traditions than the native Gaelic speaking Celtic Scholar and Archeologist, Anne Ross.

Dr. Ross takes an in-depth look at the beliefs and customs of the Highlands and Islands of Scotland, stemming from pre-Christian customs and surviving for centuries through oral tradition, Christianized hymns and incantations, and folklore.

This text covers the mysticism of Scottish clan lore and it's importance in Scottish society, the Seers and second sight, witchcraft and magic, cures, omens, taboos, social customs, reverence toward life/death, calendar festivals and other daily practices and rites, all stemming from the Scottish Highlands and Islands.

One thing to remember about this book is that many of the sources are Christian in nature and that influence is readily seen in Scottish tradition and folklore, but the author peels away many of the Christian customs to reveal a system of beliefs and practices most commonly associated with the pre-Christian (Pagan) era.

The depths which she reveals in Scottish traditions are quite amazing, and her analysis makes this a thoroughly interesting book, from cover to cover.

My kids both love the illustrations and sounds associated with this book, but the library hardcover version was a little easier to enjoy than the big flimsy pages of this paperback. Still, I don't regret it for the price!

I got this book from the libary for my 3 year old son. And we renewed it twice then had to return it. He was asking constantly for Gabriella. So, I just broke down and bought it. It's a beautifully written story about music. Her words have such an eloquence to them. I would highly recommend it to anyone.

Candace Fleming's prose sings, and you cannot help but be transported to another place by Gisele Potter's charming illustrations.

There are so many elements that make this a truly lovely book. My daughter and I love Giselle Potter's illustration and when she is teamed with Candace Fleming they make the perfect combination. The storyline is original and interesting with Gabriella finding music in the sounds of everyday life. Her relationship with the people she meets each day and particularly her mother are loving, warm and sweet. And I really appreciate how Gabriella and her friends all have something to contribute and the composer takes their musicality and incorporates into his symphony - and they are thrilled! The language and repetition Fleming uses to describe the musical sounds of the neighbourhood are instantly recognisable and stimulating, encouraging little people to find their own "songs". The illustrations are divine - the colours so conjure up the light and antiquity of Italy and I find the rounded faces and bodies of Potter's Gabriella so appealing. Highly recommended, particularly for those parents and children who find pleasure in music and the gentle side of life. As with Agnes Caws this book provides an endearing and strong young girl heroine, interested in creativity, people and her environment.

This is such an enchanting, smart and magic little book. It has all the elements I look for in a book for the kids I read to. Through it kids can learn about another city (a quite a wonderful one at that), the power of music and the charm and love commen people of a town can provide for each other. I have read a lot of kids books and this one is really, really special.

This book has been a blessing to me and others I have shared it with. I have used it many times as an inspiration and research source for devotions I have given at many women's meetings.

This book is 3 books in one. The first part, Disciplines of the Beautiful Woman, gives you advice and tips about every day living: wardrobe, time management, etc. The second part, Disciplines of the Heart, helps you enhance your relationship with God and your faith and trust in Him. This part has helped me a lot to be more confident in God, to not worry so much but
trust Him. The third part, Disciplines of the Home, is addressed especially to women who are also mothers.

This book is a must read for any woman, and a wonderful reference book to keep.

Mrs. Ortlund does a beautiful job in teaching women how to organize their lives and get their priorities in place according to what will please God. She clearly sets the ideal, which may be unattainable for most women, especially those with young children. However, every woman should be able to gain some insight from this book and make her life better.

Very Practical and Very Based in His Word.

When I read the book, Getting the Best Out of College, I immediately thought of how helpful it would have been for me, as a parent, to read it BEFORE my children went off to college. But that time for me has come and gone.

For upcoming high school graduates and their parents, the book presents a lot of very helpful information on college life - dorms, social encounters, and personal responsibility. One aspect I thought was wonderful was the encouragement to the new college student to look at the support system around him or her and appreciate and acknowledge it, whether it's parents or people who work in the dorms or campus to keep it clean and safe.

Better yet, I think the book is a great first-time read or re-read for a student IN college. The authors encourage students to contact their professors - THEY are people with interesting ideas, knowledge and contacts who are there to educate AND to give assistance with papers, internships, and recommendations for jobs and graduate school.

There is a tremendous amount of information in this book which would benefit college students and parents. Even the last chapter deals with preparing for life after college. The book has become my favorite high school graduation gift this year, plus I have also given it to my rising college senior to read now. I highly recommend Getting the Best Out of College.

This thoughtful book is a great read for a high school senior preparing for college as well as parents and educators trying to shephard them through this rite of passage. It takes us beyond 'getting in' to the importance of going to college well prepared to take advantage of all the experience has to offer.

I enjoyed reading this book as well as learning what it had to say. The insights from the writers are helpful as a parent. My son is reading it now and I have given it to two new grad's. Simple, focused, funny and insightful. The obvious insights in the book are great for a parent who wants to share their college wisdom but time or communicatin may be an issue. It is modern with current challenges, dangers, and obstacles that a student might encounter. It also steers a student, new or transfer into areas that are fun and exciting that may lead to future interests. The area on working with the professors is very good and the whole book was terrific.

I bought this book for my cousin who is about to graduate HS.....it is full of helpful ideas and an overall good-go-to for the transition for HS to College. I really wish this book had been around during this time in my life. Thank you for a wonderful, helpful book.

As a teacher I am surrounded by students about to make the transition from high school to college. When I heard about this book I went out and got a copy. I read some passages to my husband out of the "Leaving Home, Phoning Home, and the First Trip Back to the Mothership" chapter. We were both laughing hard by the end of it. The true to life vignettes and insightful advice prove to be an engaging mixture throughout the book. Overall the book is informative, thoughtful, and humorous. The trio of authors blends their voices and experiences smoothly. I recommend this book to students and their parents.

Thsi is such a great story by Trina Robbins. Anne Timmons, I give you 5/5 stars on your artwork! This is an amazing storyline of comics! And the next go girl is called "Go Girl 'The Time Team' volume 1" It's better than the original!

Go,Girl!,a series of ongoing comics by writer Trina Robbins and artist Anne Timmons is one that captivates a readership easily .

The writing is interesting,attention holding,and there is the recipe of writing every reader needs. An individual,original ,issue has the soap opera hook that shouts out"To be continued" without the words.

The art fits like a glove as an asset to the storyline,and at times could probably tell the story alone.

The trade paperback is a compilation of the 5 individual comics plus 2 more along with some pinups done by other people .

It makes a nice gift ,too!

What a wonderful contribution to the genre: a girl-friendly superhero comic with a terrific heroine (with a Super Mom--in every sense of the word), fine story lines, and wonderful illustrations! The fashion pages remind of the Katy Keene comics I loved as a girl. When my 11-year-old daughter read this (in a single sitting), she demanded to know when a second volume would come out! Ann and Trina--go girls!

This comic book series and now the paperback version is just what girls the world over needed! Realistic body images of young teen girls and reasonable adolescent ideas about their world. I'm really pleased with what I've read from Trina Robbins. She's retained the knowledge and experience from raising her own daughter and put it into her storylines so well! I see myself with my own 2 daughters in some of what Lindsay says to her mom in some of the episodes! It's so uncanny! And the artwork from Anne Timmons is exceptional! Her capture of an 'Eartha Kitt' version of the catwoman in issue #5 was so delightfully humorous, it brought us parents into the enjoyment of these stories! I wish more parents knew about this great series for their daughters and I plan on trying my best to spread the word. Take a copy of this comic book to your child's school and introduce it to some of your favorite teachers so they can show it to their female students and maybe even the boys will enjoy it!
My 15-yr-old daughter is also enjoying reading the stories about Lindsay and perusing the artwork, and she gets a real kick out of the paperdolls and costumes done on the back cover! She's even tried her own hand at drawing 'Go Girl!'

Robbins/Timmons book, GoGirl is just the tonic for your budding superstar daughter! I found this book fun, the artwork terrific, and amidst all the super shennagans are found some very realistic adolescent conditions that all young girls regardless of their super-strengths are bound to encounter!: peer pressure, role-modeling, parent-child relations, self-image, the whole gamut, kind of like a modern day Nancy Drew who can FLY! Oh, and by-the-way, did I tell you she's carrying on her MOTHER's fine superheroine tradition? Go figure. Go get this book. Go now. Do not pass go and do not pass this one by. Your kid will love it. Mine did.

This is a story that is so interesting. You feel as though you know each character very well. There is a story behind each character. This is a wonderful read for anyone at any time. The author did a fantastic job researching for this book. I will definitely buy every book she writes.

You've done a wonderful job. The research is there. I especially like the accounts of the National Road.

This is a wonderful book for summer-so well written and researched. The main character Lily really comes alive throughout this novel. Mary Anne Butler's characterization is superb.

This is a wonderful text. Unfortunately it is in a soft cover, unlike vol. 2 which is hard cover, but that aside, it is wonderful.

I am a first-time mom who is planning an unattended home birth. Because of various problems I've also ended up without prenatal care so this volume has proven invaluable to me!! It is clear and exhaustive. This volume has a lot of information directed exclusively for midwives (philosophy of midwivery, how to set up a practice, how to work with different kinds of women, initiating contact and establishing care, etc.), but there is plenty of information useful to "do-it-yourself" prenatal care. It covers what to do during a prenatal exam during each trimester, special circumstances, problems that can occur during pregnancy and information on conditions that might preexist pregnancy.

There is a good section that explains anatomy and physiology that you need to know and I found it easy for me, as a non-medical/non-scientific person, to understand. The index is very thorough.

If you are buying the second volume and aren't sure you should get this one I would recommend that you do get this one because the second volume says that you should review the anatomy and physiology covered in the first volume since it doesn't repeat it and the foundation is essential to understanding the information in the second volume. (If you have medical/midwivery training it may not be so necessary, but then you might appreciate the text for other reasons).

Overall I'd say that if you plan an unattended birth and want to be as informed and safe as possible it is very worthwhile to purchase this volume as well as the second volume and invaluable if you are doing your own prenatal care. If nothing else it can give guidance on when you need to seek a healthcare professional. If you have an attendant then it may only be useful to you if you like to know everything and are willing to pay this much. Otherwise I wouldn't recommend it to the non-midwife.

Oh, don't let the term "Holistic" throw you. It gives in-depth medical information as well as giving some alternative medicine information. My husband is a bio-chemist researcher and has worked as a nurse; he is very pleased with the scientific information in this volume and the next.

I have known Anne Frye as part of the midwifery community here in Oregon since 1992. I first met her at a midwifery conference where she gave the most thorough presentation of prenatal nutrition I'd ever had in the 4 years, at that point, that I had been learning midwifery. Her clear, easy to understand, but incredibly detailed explanations about such things as how the pregnant woman's different blood volume and makeup affects iron levels, protein needs, and commonly misunderstood conditions known as pre-eclampsia and "prenatal diabetes" still stick with me to this day. From what I recall at the time, Anne wrote this series in response to the lack of a comprehensive textbook that focused specifically on midwifery. Until that time, midwives all over used a couple of standard medical texts for obstetrics, one that focused on British nurse-midwifery (a very different standard, though useful), and a combination of books on more focused topics written by midwives. This book provides enough information that, if a midwife had only this text, she would be able to offer excellent prenatal care.

I was one of the first to receive this book, having placed my order directly with her prior to it's first printing. I have referred to it countless times, as I am about to do again for a Master's level counseling course I am taking. Anne Frye draws from many sources, both modern scientific/medical and ancient health practices, to tell, in completion, everything you need to know to adequately be "with woman" in childbearing. The drawings in this book are also beautiful, amazingly done by an artist friend of hers who took great care to ensure their accuracy.
If you are interested in assisting women in their childbearing year, you MUST have and use this book.

If I had to choose one book on pregnancy and birth from my bookshelf (a very hard pick!), this would be the one. Although not aimed at the general public, women planning a natural birth would find authoritative and invaluable information in this book. Midwife Anne Frye uses her own experience and midwifery wisdom as well as a thorough but critical look at the medical research in the subjects that she addresses. She brings, to my mind, the best of medical research with a holistic and gentle approach. I'm looking forward to Volume 2!

If you bought no other books on midwifery, Anne Frye's books would be the ones you should have. Holistic Midwifery, Volume I is one of the books that I am constantly refering back to in my studies and in dealing with clients. It is worth its weight in gold. I just received the second volume of this set and am ecstatic to have it. I have gotten so much use and learned so much out of Volume one that I know that Volume II will be the same way. Holistic Midwifery is also a required text at most (if not all) CPM midwifery schools in America. I know that I enjoyed completing the requirement for Ancient Art Midwifery Institute in answering the questions relating to and reading/taking notes from Volume I of Holistic Midwifery. In a nutshell, if you don't have it, get it!

This book is vital for doulas, childbirth educators, and midwives!

The reason is simple: this book is both useful as a reference book and as an actual study book. As childbirth professionals, we need to understand what is happening to our clients at all times. On occasion, we need to turn to a reference text to learn what we need to know.

This is a book that answers questions and provides information to people who need reference material at the finger tips. This is one book that does not leave my desk top to be causally loaned out!

A great book for the child who loves cats.

I love this little book. I had bought several of her calendars and always enjoyed them. But this book can be kept thoughout the years.

This is neat little book and great for any cat-lover. Quotes from the famous and not so famous. The pictures are great. I bought it because I am doing cat art and the illustrations are outstanding and capture the cat's unique personalities.

This is a great little book for the cat lover. Wonderful quotes are paired with Lesley Anne Ivory's exquisite cat paintings.

So I am not sure why all the other reviews say this is great for a hand exam, but it is a fabulous book for any clinician interested in clinical immunology. Great reviews of the immunology behind the clinical diseases. I have to say I am an author of one of the chapters in the upcoming new edition, but I used the second edition extensively when I was a post-doc and needed to learn quickly what was going on in the field. A great book!

This set of books is a great asset to our rehab clinic. We were able to put the information into practice as soon as we got the books. It is an exhausive resource for UE rehab.

One of the most comprehensive textbooks on the market. Includes detailed anatomy reveiw, diagnostic and treatment methods. Provides concise and up to date information about a variety of hand and upper extremity conditions. The "must have" resource for all hand therapists.

Worth every penny!! Used this as my main reference to study for the hand examination.
