fun paranormal romantic suspense fantasyReview Date: 2007-12-08
Draicon werewolf Nicolas Keenan learns that the Morphs threaten his soulmate, a Draicon veterinarian Dr. Maggie Sinclair, who thinks she is human. He races to Florida to keep her safe, but she rejects him as being a lunatic. Her belief systems changes when the evil shapeshifting Morphs attack her and Nicolas saves her life. As she realizes who she is and who he is to her, they team up in love to fight for their lives.
The key to this paranormal romantic suspense fantasy is the belief that the Draicon and Morph are genuine species who are in a shapeshifters' civil war. Nicolas and Maggie are interesting lead characters whose relationship morphs (a bad action verb for this couple) from her assuming he is crazy to joining him in love and safety. Fans will appreciate Bonnie Vanak's engaging thriller as her world is a dangerous place to live let alone fall in love.

Emotionally charged tale....Review Date: 2007-12-22
Nicholas Keenan has a duty to his pack, the same pack from which he is considered an outcast. As a Draicon werewolf warrior, Nicholas is charged with finding the pack's lost empathy and bringing her home. After all, only can THE EMPATH defeat the menace to the Draicon, the deadly Morphs (shape shifters) who have infected the pack leader, Damian. However, THE EMPATH is veterinarian Maggie Sinclair, a woman who has sworn to not kill a single living soul. In fact, Maggie doesn't even realize she is a Draicon! How will these two very different individuals handle the love that grows between them? Will Maggie's return defeat the Morphs? And just what other secrets will be uncovered?
What a powerful tale! Bonnie Vanak delivers an emotionally charged tale that has the perfect balance of plot and passion. Her writing is exquisite as the deep emotional turmoil of the characters simmers throughout this fascinating werewolf story. I could feel Maggie's anguish at being forced into inflicting violence while Nicholas' loneliness was piercing in its intensity.
The Morphs provided an interesting twist to the storyline. Their powers gave me the shivers as the image of the ants is one that will haunt my nightmares for quite awhile! However, the Morphs are not the only twist in this story as Bonnie Vanak has some surprises in store for her readers. A sequel is obviously intended as there are a few loose threads that I cannot wait to see resolved.
THE EMPATH is a sensuous and heartbreakingly beautiful tale that is sure to be loved by paranormal readers. Bonnie Vanak takes the werewolf legends and shapes them into her own stunning mythology. Bravo, Ms. Vanak, and keep the stories coming!

Entertainingly Smooth and Sensual StoryReview Date: 2007-11-21
Nicolas must quickly convince Maggie of her true identity and must persuade her to accept her fate as the foretold legend of their people and as Nicolas's true mate. Their enemies, the Morphs, are relentless in their pursuit of Maggie and would like nothing better than to eliminate the packs only hope. Vowing never to use violence can Maggie embrace and release the raging beast that lies dormant within her? Will Nicolas wholly give himself to his mate to ensue the exchange of power and physical bonding during their delicate ritual of mating?
Being the first book this reviewer has read by Ms. Vanak, The Empath is a remarkably sensational and highly entertaining story that prompted this reader to hang on for a worthwhile ride. From the moment we meet the sexy and mouth watering Nicolas complimented by the lovely and tender Maggie you cannot help but cheer and sympathize with these two characters along their path of pain, love and discovery.
Paranormal readers take notice! Ms. Vanak's The Empath is a force to be reckoned with as this author has concocted a smooth and sensual story guaranteed to please readers longing for strong characters intertwined with magical and mystical beings. This story is a recommended read and I will definitely be looking for other releases by Ms. Vanak!

Life is seldom without some sort of difficulty Review Date: 2007-06-01
With all these decisions preying on Beka's mind, she is also forced to take action --- responsible action --- on behalf of herself and those close to her. Her sister Lucy is becoming more distant and angry by the day. Beka pushes as far as she's able to reach back into Lucy's world, but every time she makes another attempt, Lucy backlashes her with bitter words of resentment. Beka's dad --- the strong, stable, committed man that he is --- tries to protect his family from erupting work problems that threaten his financial stability and reputation. But Beka sees through her father's calm façade and tries to shoulder some of his burden as well. Meanwhile, Beka's best friend Lori continues to wrestle with her own family troubles as her adopted parents attempt to work through an ongoing marriage crisis.
Add school with the revenge-seeking Mai and a controversy involving Beka's music teacher and her song of choice, and Beka is reeling under the pressure. From every angle, Beka has something or someone needing her help, support or advice. So where does Beka go for recharging? Surprisingly, she finds a friendly and understanding voice in Gabby, her dad's fiancée. Beka's counselor offers additional wise counsel, as do a few Christian friends from church.
When all is said and done, Beka realizes that everyone needs "backup," God provides exactly what is needed, and life is seldom without some sort of difficulty --- although there's still something worthwhile even amidst the hardships.

Beka just gets better!Review Date: 2006-07-24
Beka is concerned about her family, too. Her younger sister, Lucy, is running with the wrong crowd and Beka is worried about her. She has become withdrawn and refuses to listen to Beka's advice. Mai continues to be Beka's enemy in spite of Beka's determination to pray for her. And Beka has to get used to the idea of her widowed father getting married again. But in every area of her life, Beka seeks God's wisdom and guidance.
Sumpolec knows teenagers, and her characterizations are true-to-life. I quickly became involved with Beka's aspirations and emotions. Evocative descriptions and realistic dialogue combine to make the reader feel "there" in the story. I'm looking forward to seeing what Sarah Anne Sumpolec has in mind as an encore for her readers after her successful Beka series.
Enjoyed itReview Date: 2006-04-21
The Encore captures what it's like to be young, insecure, and undecided. Beka doesn't seem like a character in a book, she seems like the teenager in your own family, as she tries to be everything to everyone, and ends up feeling like a failure. How can you have all the answers when you don't even know all the questions? Buy this one for your teenage daughter. She'll love it.
Loved It! Review Date: 2006-04-10
As for what to do after graduation...does she stay close to home and go to college or does she move across the country to go after a music career and attend school part-time? If she moves across the country, she'll leave everything that's familiar to live with relatives of her father's fiance, but she'll also be closer to Josh.
As for the love life...first, there was Mark. Mark is every girl's dream. He's handsome and athletic and knows just what to say to make Beka feel like a princess. Josh is older and away in Seatle in college. He's more interested in taking things slowly and taking the relationship where God leads. Mark's approach is more exciting and makes her heart beat a little faster, but it just doesn't feel right.
Then there's her father and Gabie, her soon-to-be stepmom. It's been barely two years since Beka's mom passed away and Beka is still clinging to her memory. Gabie does her best to help, but Beka can't seem to unlock her heart.
As graduation draws closer, Beka knows she must make some life altering decisions. Does she sign the record contract and move to the other side of the country? It will put her closer to Josh, but further from her father and her siblings. Is she ready to be that far away from her family?
Sumpolec tackles Beka's decisions with Godly guidance and the struggle Beka faces with earthly temptation. It's a wonderful conclusion to a wonderful journey through Beka's life.

quintessential Christmas romanceReview Date: 2008-06-16
Emerson MacVey was a ruthless, greedy, uncaring man, until he had a massive heart attack and died at the age of 32. Now, 17 months after his death, he has one last chance of avoiding hell--he'll return to earth in another body, and within one month, he has to make amends to 3 people whose lives he destroyed. The fine print: he gets 3 miracles--one per person, and there'll be someone there to keep an eye on him, and he can't tell anyone who he is or why he's there.
The first person, and the only one whose name he's told, is Carrie Alexander. She'd been his secretary for 3 months, and he fired her on Christmas Eve. She was also the only person who'd cried when he died.
Carrie had thought she'd seen the good hidden under Emerson's cold exterior, and she'd fallen in love with him. And when her hometown's only industry was collapsing, she thought she saw a way to help both him and her town, since his business was buying and selling businesses. Instead, he bought it and closed it down, dooming the town, and broke her heart.
Now she's being eaten up by the guilt, and making amends in the only way she can think of--being the town's resident angel.
So when Gabriel Falcone's car ran into a ditch near Angel Falls, Carrie was the one who looked after him.
Falling Angel is a sweet story of love and redemption, sort of a cross between A Christmas Carol and Heaven Can Wait. But it avoids the saccharine sappiness of so many Christmas redemption romances, by making the emotions real rather than forced, and by giving both characters real dilemmas instead of simply the expected self-sacrifice.
Carrie's not just your usual milquetoast altruistic heroine, and Emerson/Gabriel isn't just your usual hero who only seems unfeeling because he hasn't yet learned to love. They're a lot more 3-dimensional than that. The rest of the town is likewise real, and because of that, you care about what happens to them.
This is, I think, the quintessential Christmas romance--it's what so many stories aspire to, but so few completely achieve.

If We all Could Have a 2nd Chance?Review Date: 2002-06-11
Gabriel works very hard to accomplish his assignment because he is being weighted in the balance to see if he will be allowed to return to Heaven or will he be sent to "that other place".
Gabriel's character shows both sides of the human nature. The reader is able to feel the emotions (or lack of)in MacVey's personality which is typical of many people but also the warm, loving and caring personality of Gabriel which is found in most everyone.
I enjoyed reading the book very much.It really made me stop and think about what I am doing to others while I am alive because,in reality,I do not think I will have a second chance.

Great Info, Enjoyable read!Review Date: 2005-10-31
Brief but inclusive, with some new information. Not the most useful on the subject, but recomended.Review Date: 2006-10-26
The book's first section, "Clan Lore," is specific to the Scottish Highlands and unlike anything I've seen in books on this and similar topics. Ross connects fairly ancient practices to fairly modern practices, in part through the clan system. She also discusses the primary attributions and functions of the clan, and how these attributions interact with religion and folklore. This section will be particularly useful to the reader interested in narrowing his research to a more specific location. It does, however, cross over some traditional boundaries in time and practice, and so it needs to be read carefully and with a grain of salt.
Much of the rest of the book will be familiar to those that have read Campbell and Carmichael, and Ross fails to add much in the way of new or insightful commentary. She does, however, restrict her purview to the highlands, again making the book useful to the reader who wishes to localize his study. The section on witchcraft, while definitely folklore inspired/corrupted by Christianity, is more complete than corresponding sections in similar texts. Ross also include a handful of illustrations of varying usefulness that are scattered throughout the text.
As mentioned, the section of seasonal and religious practices is defiantly the most useful and complete of the book. Unlike many authors in the same field, Ross does a more than adequate job of summarizing various sources and practices into a coherent text on each of the subjects she talks about. This will help the reader put other research into context and gain a greater understanding on seasonal/religious practices in Scotland as a whole. All in all, I do recommend this book, but not very highly. It is an interesting and fast read with a few useful sections, but on the whole it lacks the depth, analysis, and new content of similar books by authors in the field. It's a good book to borrow or to wait to buy, and I would recommend other books and authors ahead of it.

Beautiful, Mystical & Very Revealing!Review Date: 2003-02-07
Dr. Ross takes an in-depth look at the beliefs and customs of the Highlands and Islands of Scotland, stemming from pre-Christian customs and surviving for centuries through oral tradition, Christianized hymns and incantations, and folklore.
This text covers the mysticism of Scottish clan lore and it's importance in Scottish society, the Seers and second sight, witchcraft and magic, cures, omens, taboos, social customs, reverence toward life/death, calendar festivals and other daily practices and rites, all stemming from the Scottish Highlands and Islands.
One thing to remember about this book is that many of the sources are Christian in nature and that influence is readily seen in Scottish tradition and folklore, but the author peels away many of the Christian customs to reveal a system of beliefs and practices most commonly associated with the pre-Christian (Pagan) era.
The depths which she reveals in Scottish traditions are quite amazing, and her analysis makes this a thoroughly interesting book, from cover to cover.

A wonderful book on college lifeReview Date: 2008-06-19
For upcoming high school graduates and their parents, the book presents a lot of very helpful information on college life - dorms, social encounters, and personal responsibility. One aspect I thought was wonderful was the encouragement to the new college student to look at the support system around him or her and appreciate and acknowledge it, whether it's parents or people who work in the dorms or campus to keep it clean and safe.
Better yet, I think the book is a great first-time read or re-read for a student IN college. The authors encourage students to contact their professors - THEY are people with interesting ideas, knowledge and contacts who are there to educate AND to give assistance with papers, internships, and recommendations for jobs and graduate school.
There is a tremendous amount of information in this book which would benefit college students and parents. Even the last chapter deals with preparing for life after college. The book has become my favorite high school graduation gift this year, plus I have also given it to my rising college senior to read now. I highly recommend Getting the Best Out of College.

GoGirl! Trade PaperbackReview Date: 2004-03-15
The writing is interesting, attention holding, and there is the recipe of writing every reader needs. An individual, original ,issue has the soap opera hook that shouts out"To be continued" without the words.
The art fits like a glove as an asset to the storyline, and at times could probably tell the story alone.
The trade paperback is a compilation of the 5 individual comics plus 2 more along with some pinups done by other people .
It makes a nice gift ,too!
