Dr. Scott Hahn has the reputation of a brilliant scholar and a passionate follower of Christ. This breathtakingly beautiful book is a reflection of great love and devotion to Salvation History.

The beginning of the book - the Foreword - is worth the investment. The illustrations are nothing short of spectacular. Extremely well documented with Scripture and quotations from the Church Fathers and from the Catechism of the Catholic Church, this is a classic masterpiece.

A masterpiece!

I just want to say that I love this book. Me and my husband bought it during the 1st Annual Catholic Scripture Study Conference 2006 in Charlotte, NC last April. We studied Bible with the International Catholic Bible Society (SOBICAIN)in Venezuela and we were looking for a compendium in English that could help us prepare ourselves to teach Bible studies in our parish. This book is so beautifully made that makes the excellent content and the visual design a delight for both intellect and spirit. And I admit it, we are also Dr. Hahn's big fans since we read his conversation story (Rome Sweet Home) and some other of his books (Hail Holy Queen, The lamb's Supper, Lord Have Mercy and his contribution to the books Catholic for a Reason). May God bless him and his family aboundantely because thanks to his books a lot of craddle catholics are coming back to the Church with a renewed faith and he's gaining countless of converts from other Christian denominations. I definetely recommend this book for both people seeking to study Bible for themselves or to teach a complete course in their parishes... and I don't give more stars because Amazon doesn't have more!!!!!

Wow!!! I can't believe this!!!

Honestly, this is the single most incredible Scripture textbook for High School aged students that I have ever seen in my life.

I was first made aware of this series about a month ago, when I learned that a local Catholic High School had chosen to use one of the titles. One of my closest friends, the theology teacher at my son's High School, then ordered the entire series.

As a professional theologian -- and as a professional educator -- I can only sit back and be amazed. This is simply the BEST one-volume introduction to Scripture that I have ever seen. It is faithful to the text, without denying the contributions of higher criticism. It is faithful to the Teaching of the Church. It is brilliantly illustrated and laid out. As someone who examines texts for a living -- it simply blew me away. I will be ordering a copy for my parish library as soon as possible. I only wish that a parish edition, suitable for CCD classes (and the limitations under which they labor) could be forthcoming.

Dr. Hahn has outdone himself.

Very, very highly recommended!

As the director of adult faith formation at a Catholic parish, I am using this text in tandem with the Bible as the textbook for a 9-month course on the Bible (30 classes, one class per chapter in this book). Our adults are devouring the material and *absolutely love* the content, layout, font, sacred art, diagrams, and beautiful photographs, which make this book such a fabulous resource for any student of the Bible.

I wholly recommend this text to all high school classrooms as well as to all parishes and organizations that wish to facilitate a complete course on the Sacred Scriptures in order to give the student a Catholic Scriptural worldview and an overview, a framework, by which one may understand Salvation History as mediated by the Bible.

Also, if you simply want to learn the Bible in the privacy of your own home - perhaps with your spouse or a friend - you should acquire a copy for yourself and read through it (perhaps one chapter per week). The chapters are short, easy-to-read, and full of amazing information.

If sitting on your coffee table, the textbook looks enticing, and I guarantee, from personal experience that visitors will open it up and start flipping through the pages to view the eye-catching, colorful pages. Then, you'll hear the question, "Where did you get this?? How can I get my hands on one?"

This is a true lost classic that reveals the beginning of the great character of Dracula. The editor's notes add to the interest of the book and build knowledge on the times and elements of Varney. I recommend this reading for any Dracula fan or a fan of interesting reading. A+++ to Herr for bringing this hidden treasure back to the world of literature.

Ignore all the talk about Dracula in other reviews, that book and this one are two uniquely different entities. Legends about vampires existed outside of Transylvania, and even Europe for that matter, long before the Victorians tightened their first bodice. My impression of this book is that the writing is closer to Robert E. Howard in its great forward momentum; another apt comparison might be to the movie serials of the '30s-'50s. Thrills and more thrills! The style may be a little underwhelming, but if you can read Ann Radcliffe you can certainly read this. And incidentally, I think the ungrammatical and linguistically oafish reviews for this book are very appropriate for a book written at top speed and with little editorial supervision. Take a trip back in time to a very different world - read this book!

I absolutely love this book! An excellent relic from the golden (or shall I say black) age of Gothic Lit. Why this gem has remained hidden for all these years is a mystery to me, but Mr. Herr has finally revived this old Penny Dreadful and brought a new light to this style of writing. A wonderful Gothic novel by the same author who originated the Sweeney Todd story. A must buy!

The classic story of the bunny who learns the hard way that you are not "real" until you are loved, and sometimes being loved hurts. It's a beautiful love story between a boy and his bunny and how the bunny evolves into a "real" rabbit because of the boy's love. The illustrations in this edition are some of the nicest I've seen -- just beautiful!

I love the story and it's my friend's favorite book. I was hunting for a gift for her that she'd like and ran into the cover of this thing wich is probably half of what drove you to buying it as well. After I bought it, I discovered that it only has seventeen pages. (The Original Book as like 47) And despite what the cover would suggest, some of the illustration is a bit .. "crappy". I'm not trying to be a tough critic. The story goes along just fine untill the fairy gets into the picture she looks like a goldenbooks gingerbread-man and the diologue drops flat right there and I could almost see a big red "ADAPTATION" stamp across the page. If you want to read your kids or significant others "processed classics", then this is right up your alley. Enjoy.

I read Patrice's blog and am a fellow author of multiple books (one of which is self-published). Patrice has hit upon a maximum-impact minimum-risk strategy of publicizing and marketing your books/articles online. The efforts she outlines seem much more effective and focused than what traditional publishers are able to do for their authors, which is becoming smaller all the time.

Whether you are published by a traditional publisher or self-publish, you can use the strategies in this book to sell more of yours! Those who would benefit most are non-fiction authors with a niche audience. But Patrice does address fiction and novel authors as well.

The only thing I wanted more of was more information about doing Virtual Book Tours. Patrice does say they're a good idea, but gives no specific information on setting one up. I'd love to see that in the future or in a special report!

What a lovely book. I'm really glad I purchased a copy for myself. I'm a SCORE volunteer counselor and quite often my clients ask about Web sites and Web site design, and how to incorporate them into their small business' marketing plan. This book is the one that comes to my mind when I recommend a tome for them to read so I don't have to go into a long-winded sermon on the ins-and-outs of building a Web site. The other book I like a lot is Susan Daffron's book entitled Web Business Success (ISBN: 0974924504).

The book has 12 chapters, but I haven't listed them below. The list below includes the topics covered in the book that I have prioritized and grouped the way I would have liked the book to read.

1. How to Design a Web site
2. Add a Blog
3. Add a Podcast
4. Add an Ezine
5. Create eBooks
6. Create audio CDs and DVDs
7. Learn about Shopping Cart technology
8. Learn about RSS technology
9. Learn about Search Engine Optimization (SEO)
10. Learn about Online Advertising
11. Learn about Online Marketing
12. Learn about Using Amazon to Promote and Sell Your Book

My favorite topics were 1, 2, 5, 9 and 11. In my humble opinion they are the meat to putting together a Net presence using a Web site. It is these topics that I recommend my SCORE clients focus on when reading the book. I've tried the ezine thing, and I have found it to be a waste of time and effort. CDs and DVDs are beyond me at this time. But maybe in the future I might consider them as a great marketing vehicle. I think shopping cart technology is good for a retail shop. But an author with only one or two titles may want to skip it. I don't find much use for RSS technology since I don't go heavy on reading blogs. Maybe when there get to be a number of good blogs to read, then I might recommend RSS.

I have recently read a few books on using Amazon to promote and sell POD books. I think they were written after this book, and they seem to do a better job covering topic #12 above. Maybe the material on Amazon in this book is a little dated? But I saw a lot of good stuff on Amazon in this book. Consider also checking out Shepard's book entitled Aiming at Amazon (ISBN: 093849743X) and Weber's book entitled Plug Your Book! (ISBN: 0977240614).

Don't think that this book is only good for authors who want to use the Net to market their book. The principles and techniques beautifully explained in this book are equally applicable to promoting any business. So any wanta-be entrepreneur that doesn't know much about the Net or Web sites will do themselves a favor by getting this book, reading it, and then studying it. 5 stars!

A "Must-Have" for Writers and Promotors

The title to THE WEB-SAVVY WRITER, by Patrice-Anne Rutledge, holds a very important key. The reader should be web-savvy. At least more so than I am, because much of this book went over my head. I would have liked more detail on some of the technical stuff, but still, it emphasized my weaknesses and showed me the areas I need to study.

I would consider this a reference manual. This is not a book you should read once and try to retain. This is a book to keep on your shelf and refer to often. This is also not a one stop shop for marketing and promoting your book, but it does cover, quite thoroughly, the aspects of electronic marketing and promotion.

Someone more tech-savvy than me (and that includes most readers) would probably find this book more useful than I did, but I must add I did gain a lot of insight and once I do bone up on some of the technical areas, will read this one again. Even with my limited technical knowledge, I will reference this book often.

Of course Rutledge covers what you would expect here for book promotions - websites, search engine optimization, blogging - but goes much further. There are chapters on such promotional methods as RSS feeds, podcasts, ezines, and even how to sell and promote your book here, on Amazon.

Perhaps the best part of the book, for me at least, was at the end where Rutledge includes several author profiles. Here the reader learns first hand what has worked best for other authors in a variety of genres. Overall, a good book, even is some of it was over my head.

I put this book on last year's wish list and kept it there hoping someone would take the hint and buy it for me. My mother got it for me for Christmas this year, and I can tell it will be much used and appreciated. I chanced across this book, but at my time in life when my children are almost raised and I am almost finished with my schooling and embarking on my science education /bioethics career I am finding I want to make my home more orgaqnized and more homey for me to come home to. I am not a natural homemaker with an eye to placement and beautiful things. My mother is, as is Emilie Barnes. Some of us need a little help because our talents lie elsewhere. This book can be viewed for the way the Barnes have decorated their homes, and the writing is geared toward giving ideas for how to run a house more lovingly and cleanly. When I have time to do these things, I want to do them right. This book is loaded with ideas, plans, and future thoughts for making an individual house a home.

My only problem with this book is the one I have with Martha Stewart also...some of us just do not have the time or money to put that much effort into these things. Some of it is jealousy I suspect, on my part at the relative ease with which these people are able to use such unbelieveably unfair talents. Some of it is the emphasis that some of us choose to put on other parts of our lives. I want a beautiful home, but I want to be realistic too. Sometimes it seems as if realism does not enter into the thoughts of the author of this book. It is an outstanding book from an outstanding homemaker. EXCELLENT! This book was exactly what I needed! I'm not gifted with a homemaking instinct. Emilie packed in this book hundreds of practical ideas that I could use to transform my house into a home and to make it a refuge for my entire family. She gives tips on decorating, organizing, hospitality, nurturing your family through your home, celebrating, creating a respite from the stresses of the world, and more. Easy to read, and easy to pick up and put down, the book is divided into very small, easily digestible sections.

Her decorating style isn't mine, but her tips are so universal that it doesn't matter. She gives concrete examples of how to incorporate her advice regardless of whether you live in your custom designed dream home, a small apartment, or anything in between. She invites you into her home through her stories and pictures, and through that I can just imagine what it must be like to be a guest in her home. Definitely something I would like to model!

This book would be a perfect gift to a first-time home owner. I really recommend it if you, like me, are seeking to add beauty, love and hospitality to your home. Thank you so much, Emilie, for addressing exactly what I have been seeking advice on for quite some time!

Have learned so much from her books in decorating, cooking, and worshiping our Lord. I'm trying to get my husband to read it also. Because I'm trying to get him to understand the "open door" policy I want for my house. And Emilie describes it so well.

AK really nails the problem definition, although I would quibble that she missed a trigger. For me, a major relapse will be traced back to a feeling of accomplishment. And the level of accomplishment that will trigger keeps diminishing. But the result is the same as shaming, etc.

AK paints such a vivid portrait of my own life, I need to send a copy of this book to everyone I've ever been late for. I finally GET THAT.

She gives an example of infant attachments - baby cries, mother responds caringly, or mother just shoves bottle in baby's mouth and leaves. I wish she had addressed the third very likely option in our day - the schedule babies. I've waded thru a lot of attachment material in the past year, trying to figure out what 'happened' to me - she points me to Fonagy next.

I've done ARTS Anonymous, CODA, OA, and a Linehan-rules Dialectial Behavior Therapy group for borderlines - I can't deal with being around all those mean blind crazy people whose lives are in danger! AND who HAVE a significant other, and/or kids, so what are they complaining about? I'm afraid even to brush my teeth sometimes, which they probably dismiss as trivial. But if my gums start un-receding - MISERY RELAPSE. Because they didn't HAVE toothbrushes in the old country when my mother was growing up. So how can I even have my teeth without seeing that scowling face? Call my sponsor? FEEL that hateful anger and jealousy. Hey! I just did a little work-thru!

So - this book came along at just the right time for me, although I wish that time had been 30-40 years ago. I'm hoping to sign up for Ms. Katherine's weight loss phone support groups this fall (2008) and do the winter seattle weekend retreat. I think - if you don't have to explain the PROBLEM to the person, you can spend all your time together coming up with solutions.

Ms. Katherine, thank you so much for this book and what you put of yourself into it. It must have been very painful to relive and recount, but so completely generous, unique, and creative of you to do so.

It never occurred to me before that someone can be addicted to feeling miserable and sabotage their own efforts and/or another person's efforts to help them succeed and enjoy life, but it is true!
I found this book insightful and clear and eye opening. The concept of misery addiction was new to me, but as I read the book, it made perfect sense. I actually worked with a person who was addicted to misery and her behavior made no sense to me at the time. She was self defeating and I did not understand why. Now I understand her issues and thinking patterns much more clearly. Now her actions and reactions make perfect sense to me.
"When Misery is Company" is a great tool for someone who is actually addicted to misery, but it can also clarify and enlighten people who know or work with those who have this addiction. I recommend it highly.

Whether they like it or not, admit it or not, a large number of people are "addicted to misery." Misery addiction is an insidious form of self-sabotage that manifests in a large number of very different, but very "general" ways. For instance, we may habitually make choices that set us up to fail, or we may abandon projects right before they succeed. Maybe we choose abusive partners and friends; maybe we're chronically underemployed. Perhaps we avoid happiness because of a persistant fear that we will *lose* that happiness. Each issue-- in one way or another-- adds up to living a life in which we never really feel content or fulfilled, and like the "good things" of life somehow keep passing us by.

Whatever the issue might be, conventional psychology either does not recognize Misery Addiction at ALL, or it chalks such problems up to more "popularly acceptable" causes, such as poor self-esteem, lack of assertiveness, ADHD or some other more widely recognized "syndrome." In this groundbreaking new book, author and psychotherapist Anne Katherine explains that there's really much more at work here.

The book is divided into two main sections. Part One ("Understanding the Problem") is dedicated to explaining and identifying the various aspects of Misery Addiction. In short, easy-to-read chapters, the author takes us through descriptions of what exactly Misery Addiction IS, then on to explaining the strange paradoxes that lie at the heart of Misery Addiction; where we may have learned during our upbringings, and how we now engage in certain behaviors that keep up from reaching happiness in life. Throughout, Katherine illustrates her descriptions with examples from her own psychotherapy practice and Misery Addiction retreats, and also includes a number of small self-tests and quizzes to help readers understand precisely where their "traps" lie.

Part Two ("Finding and Living the Solution") deals with recovery from Misery Addiction. Katherine is a strong proponent of following the basic "12-step program" format, as the optimal road to recovery. Even if you do not have a local MAA (Misery Addicts Anonymous) meeting, she recommends recommends getting involved with a 12-step group. This section also includes several chapters with "tools" to help the recovering Misery Addict deal with life. Finally, there is a helpful appendix with resources; how to set up and run a MAA group, notes to therapists, national 12-step organizations, and more.

Final thoughts: Highly recommended (9 out of 10 possible bookmarks). This is a much needed book on a topic that generally is not covered by conventional psychology or therapy. My only reservation is the extremely heavy reliance on a 12-step program as "the solution" to a complex matter, while very little information is offered about other therapeutic options. But that's a minor niggle-- this is a highly worthwhile book!

When Misery Is Company: End Self-Sabotage And Become Content by psychotherapist, licensed mental health counselor, and popular author Ann Katherine offers the reader exercises, anecdotal personal stories, and an insightful, gentle wisdom focused on the self-defeating practice of trying to guard against disappointment, fear or shame by not allowing ourselves to fully experience intimacy, success, or pleasure. Sound psychology combined with a natural talent for writing fully engage the reader's total and thoughtful attention from first page to last as individual chapters are grouped into two major parts: "Understanding the Problem" and "Finding and Living the Solution". Enhanced with five appendices and an index, When Misery Is Company is especially recommended for those seeking assistance in developing their own personal growth on the basis of sound psychology and practical experience.

I first encountered Anne Katherine's writing when I took a continuing education course about setting boundaries. I am continually impressed with her clear and unique insights. She is able to see and UNDERSTAND humans and human interaction in an exceptionally clear way. In this book, she communicates what so many of us have been unable to express and overcome within ourselves. The dynamics of self-sabotage and self-created misery are finally understood and explained in a whole and empowering way. She teaches and shows the way past a painful, self-defeating life.

Best book I have read on RAWA

I became fascinated with the work of RAWA about six months ago. I had never heard of the organization before and although I knew the Taliban was a terrible regime, I had no idea that pre and post Taliban rule there was this wonderful underground organization working to promote independence for women, hope and peace for the country. I have read quite a few books on Afghan's women's struggles, and many books with a focus on RAWA, and I have to say this one is by far the best book written on the organization of RAWA. Anne Brodsky spent much time in both Afghanistan, and Pakistan, observing, interviewing and living with supporters and members of RAWA. None of the other books I have read on the subject get as deep into the underground workings of this incredible group of people. Unlike some of the other books I have read by authors that have visited with RAWA members, Anne Brodsky has a journalistic style of writing, where her personal opinions don't over dominate the book. She is very objective, and writes much like an observer, which I really appreciated. I highly recommend this book.

"Profiles in Courage"

From its opening pages, describing the mobilization of RAWA members to clandestinely record, at tremendous personal risk, the Taliban's public execution of a woman, Anne Brodsky's book affords the reader a gripping account of a remarkable, dedicated group of individuals. The shocking footage of the burqa-clad figure toppling to the ground after a rifle-shot to the head was subsequently seen by audiences the world over; that it was seen at all was entirely due to the courage and determination of the members of the Revolutionary Association of the Women of Afghanistan.

Each chapter of "With All Our Strength" carries as its title a verse from poetry written by the extraordinary woman who founded RAWA - Meena, murdered at age 30. This apt touch presages the exceptional degree to which Brodsky fashions her narrative from the words of RAWA's members. Unlike so many other writers and journalists who have ventured of late into this geographical and political territory, Brodsky does not project herself front and center into her tale. Instead, she serves as a witness - an attentive, informed, empathetic one - who helps put the RAWA phenomenon into cogent historical, political and sociological context. No mean feat, given the complexities of the modern history of this region, as well as the sheer number of voices she interweaves into her narrative. What's more, while contributing to the central story of RAWA's rise and ongoing struggles, these voices also emerge, distinctly and movingly, as those of individual women who have made difficult choices and extraordinary sacrifices in the effort to create change.

These days, with the Bush Administration taking credit for bringing freedom to Afghanistan, it is vital to recognize the dedication of the RAWA members who militated for democracy and women's rights while the U.S. was supporting the forces that coalesced into the savagely misogynistic Taliban. It its parts and as a whole, "With All Our Strength" portrays the bravery of individuals and the power of collective action in the face of evil. Profiles in courage, indeed.

I first learned about RAWA and the deplorable situation for women in Afghanistan several years ago in a pre-9/11 magazine article. I was horrified by what I read about the Taliban and the unimaginable restrictions on and persecution of Afghan women. I wanted to help, and I was excited when I learned about RAWA and what they were doing to help the women of Afghanistan. Since then I've searched for more information on RAWA, and this book was the answer. Ms. Brodsky's book is well researched (she spent time in both Afghanistan and Pakistan with RAWA members and was the first writer to be given such unrestricted access to them). In her book I learned information about the history of RAWA, their organizational structure and operations (which was fascinating to me), and their struggle to overcome enormous obstacles with limited funds. Most mesmerizing for me, though, were the author's many excerpts of interviews with members of RAWA, both new members and those who have been with the organization almost since its inception. After reading this book, I was so impressed with the members of RAWA -- with their strength and courage, their fierce determination to better the lives of the women of their country, their great personal sacrifice, and their total devotion to their cause that I am sending a monthly donation to them. (Ms. Brodsky is donating all of her profits from this book to RAWA.) This book is a must-read for anyone interested in learning more about RAWA or to anyone interested in feminist issues or resistance movements.

I really liked Anne Brodsky's book because you can tell that she really got in there with the women of RAWA to tell a true story about them. As it says in the book, many tell tales of RAWA, but they make them one-dimentional. In other books and publications, it felt more like a story of heroines, instead of real women who are actually sticking their neck out and seriously risking their lives to help people. Not just women, people. This was a very good book and I think it was great that she spent time there with the women.

I have been a supporter of RAWA for four years, and thought I knew a lot about the organization, until I got my hands on this book. All of the questions that I have had over the years have been answered here, and then some! Brodsky's analysis and background information fill in the gaps for me in ways that nothing else has to date. I have read many books on Afghanistan, Afghan women, and even the other recent books that focus on RAWA, but this book is my best source yet. For anyone interested in helping this magificent organization, this book is a MUST read. I have given this book to family members and friends as gifts so that they may understand why RAWA is so important to me. I urge everyone who is even remotely concerned with women who resist to read this book. You will not be able to help but love RAWA and their spirit of resistance and strength. I thank Anne Brodsky for this enormous gift of information. Her contribution is truly in the spirit of RAWA, and I cannot encourage enough people to read it and to help these valiant women in their life-changing, tremendous work. If ever an organization deserved the attention of people all over the world, this is the one!

I am the only one in a household of 5 who isn't on a diet. Because of that, I am limited to microwave meals for just me or cooking diet food (yuck) for the whole family. When I looked through this book, I saw that many of the recipes are great for dieters. I went through my whole book and marked the weight watcher point values on each page and make wonderfully tasting meals that make us ALL happy. Even I will eat them! The recipes range from simple to specific, but all of them thus far have been fantastic. I make the Festive Apple Chicken as often as I can.

Anne Baker's book, " Abortion and Options Counseling " is a well constructed text which covers this complex and controversial topic in a well thought out manner. Her approach to counselling issues has been a valuable addition to our already comprehensive library of abortion medicine texts and has proven to be an extermely useful tool for counsellors and clients at our Planned Parenthood of Australia clinics. It should be a must read for all in the abortion health care field.

I have worked in an abortion clinic for over twenty years and Anne Baker's work is required reading for all new counselors on our staff. In addition her book is an excellent resource for the seasoned counselor. Her expertise and sensitivity in dealing with a host of patient issues relating to abortion becomes apparent in the first few pages of this manual. She also manages to provide useful guidelines to help clinic staff deal with the special stresses involved in working in an abortion clinic.

A "hands-on" master piece of abortion counceling know-how.

Anne Baker's, "Abortion and Options Counseling", turns out to be an absolutely marvelous encyclopedia of her interaction with women undergoing termination of pregnancy. Her manual can serve both as a guide for the implimemtation and initiation of abortion counseling services for the office or a physician addressing the initiation of abortion services. On the other hand, the detailed attention to "clients who pose a challenge" and to the Fetal Indications Termination of Pregnancy patients can be a resource for offices and physicians who handle these very uniquie and specialized sitations..

This book reflects expertise, caring, and understanding of these difficult circumstances that some women experience..
