The price beats what most college bookstores charge. I always reccommend purchasing online it could cut the cost of the book in half. However if your going to purchase your college book online you should visit the college bookstore and find out what the instructor requires for the class a few weeks ahead of time so you dont get stuck paying for expedited shipping.

Anderson, R. (2000). American Muse: Anthropological excursions into art and aesthetics. Upper Saddle River, NY: Prentice Hall Pub. ISBN: 0-13-084313-x
Compared references:
Foster, H. (Ed.). (1998). Anti-Aesthetic: Essays on postmodern culture. New York: The New Press. ISBN: 1-56584-742-3
Feagin, S. & Maynard, P. (Eds.). (1997). Aesthetics. Oxford: University of Oxford Press. ISBN: 0-19-289275-4
Anderson's (2000) research takes an in-depth look at American art and aesthetics of the local people of Kansas City, Missouri. Anderson's (2000) text welcomes the reader to participate in American tradition or to step out side of their own traditions in order to view culturally induced aesthetic themes that arise about art in America. This vantage point is unique, when comparing it to other texts which focus on aesthetic viewpoints of artistic thought, in that it is written from a culturally focused anthropological viewpoint. Edited books, like Foster (1998) and Feagin & Maynard (1997), consist of a variety of individual aesthetic viewpoints about culture and art that originate from assorted decades. These two texts, however dissimilar in their construction, are in many ways complementary to one another. For example, as Anderson (2000) dissects concurrent themes arising in his subject's `American' aesthetics about art, the other two texts provide complementary, conflicting and reoccurring themes which show strong influential ties to the subject's viewpoints in Anderson's (2000) text.
In short, the organization and content of this text make it flow with ease and intrigue. Anderson (2000) covers a wide range of viewpoints through an exhaustive analysis of his interviews with American informants. He carefully examines his sources and analyzes every aspect of their influence from rites of passage to the aesthetic pleasure that they get from the art that they produce. Through this analysis, Anderson (2000) explores the fine arts, the popular arts and any parallels in between by paying just as much attention to the art of tattooing, yard art, rock and roll, and automobiles as to painting, classical music, and literature.
The front cover of American Muse features the artwork of one of the informants who Anderson (2000) interviewed and observed. The artwork is showcased in the center of the book's cover. Its bright colors of red-orange and yellow are highlighted by it's placement on a black background and these same two bright colors are echoed in the main color of the book cover and the title. The overall layout of the book cover is a simple symmetrical design. Little has been written concerning critical review of the design of the front cover or of the text itself. However, Anderson's (2000) writing obviously echoes the practiced style of his field. He professionally highlights his citations with sometimes extensive footnotes in order to elaborate on the corresponding passages of the text.
Anderson holds a Ph.D. in cultural anthropology from the University of Minnesota and is a professor of liberal arts at the Kansas City Art Institute. He has researched and written on similar subjects in the past. These include, "Art in Primitive Societies "(1979), "Art in Small-Scale Societies" (1989), "Calliope's Sisters: A Comparative Study of Philosophies of Art" (1990). Anderson also has an extensive history in participating in the field of art anthropology including twenty professional articles, reviews and has a guest speaker/ lecturer at numerous universities and conferences.
Anderson's (2000) book, American Muse, would be of interest to others in the field of cultural anthropology and art. More specifically, its content may hold delicate minutiae for art educators. Throughout his research, it is evident that the existence of diverse viewpoints in America is currently thriving and that the occurrence of such diverse viewpoints creates three prevalent themes. The first is that Americans define art in broad terms. Second, that most art in America is that of the popular arts. Lastly, that Americans are generally ambivalent about art. In light of the existence of such conditions in America, it is possible that this current state of American aesthetic attitude towards art can shed light, for art educators, on the socially accepted views of art in individual American school settings. In addition, it may be of urgent relevancy for art educators to keep these understandings in mind while leading students through the study of art and in order to get them to contemplate challenging questions concerning their own aesthetic attitudes.
The overall quality of the text is found with it's authors professional viewpoint and hence forth style of writing. While it does not contain a glossary, the writing style of an anthropological viewpoint is more then adequate in explaining any technical jargon used. Many of the references cited are a little dated, but the validity that they hold in the perseverance of their fields of study prove to be of extreme relevancy to the text's intent. For example, Anderson listed the compared text of Feagin and Maynard (1997) as a cited reference. As mentioned earlier, this text consists of a variety of individual aesthetic viewpoints about culture and art that originate from assorted decades and the viewpoints presented show strong influential ties to the informant's opinions in Anderson's (2000) text. The index of the book is extremely accurate and useful for those times when one may need to reference previously read contents. The integrated photographs are dispersed in selective places that come just after the reader has found themselves visualizing the text or are used as windows into on coming subtitles.
In the opinion of this reviewer, I would recommend this text for purchase as well as the other two complementary texts, to art educators, pre-service art educators, to all professionals in the realm of the arts and to those involved with the study of cultural anthropology. All three books are recommended because the range of viewpoints for which they represent draws complementary and conflicting qualities to contemplate and further ones understanding of a phenomenon, aesthetic attitude, which presents itself through culturally contrived influences.

. . .to the Anchor Bible series and to serious study of Amos. I have been more than impressed with the Anchor Bible commentaries on the Minor Prophets and have included several, including this one, in a current class I'm teaching in the Minor Prophets. Of all these texts, Amos stands out as a masterpiece of modern, sensible Biblical scholarship.
Nowhere else have I seen such attention to detail. Nowhere else have I seen such in-depth Hebrew word studies (frankly, far beyond my own comprehension!) Never before have I gained such insights into a book I've read many times.
I highly recommend this volume for all serious students of the Minor Prophets -- whether one can read Hebrew or not.
The section of photographs is also a nice added touch.

How I learned what was the right sports drink for me...

I purchased this book to try to take some of the confusion out of sports drinks and electrolyte or carbohydrate replacement. I'm not a marathon runner, but instead I go to the gym and play outside with the kids. I have no need for carb loaded replacement for my body.
One of the amazing things that I learned from this book is that most of the popular sports drinks are filled with sugar and that doesn't help rehydrate you-it actually will dehydrate you. This fact alone doesn't even address that these popular drinks only replace 3 trace elements with their electolytes. We typically lose more then that. Why would I want to only replace 3 if I need more?
From the knowledge I've obtained from reading this book I was amazed at all the unnecessary "extras" in the ingredients of the popular sports drinks. I've been able to decide which sports drink is right for me and my kids to maintain a better over all health.

I believe you will find this report useful in getting a pulse of the US College market. The sample is an excellent representation of the entire market as all 1000 respondents were pre-recruited and had to have a current .edu email address, thus over 375 colleges and Universities are represented.

The work of the Andersons is truly inspiring. The idea of a great designer being also a great craftsman seems, lately, to be an extinct , if not rare occurance in architecture, and relegated to "artists". The Andersons demonstrate that Design-Build, when done right, is exciting and innovative. They take such seemingly mundane issues as pre-fabricated homes, construction specifications and documents and introduce the idea that anything can be re-thought to be stimulating.
