This is seven of Poul Anderson's best stories. The best one is set in a future where we are terraforming the Earth's Moon; Anderson is very good at designing planets.

Another goody features organized crime as part of America's establishment (insert joke of choice here).

Wonderful Marriage Workbook
Helpful Votes: 2 out of 2 total.
Review Date: 2008-04-17
My husband and I have read many books on marriage during our 30 years together. We learned a little bit from each one, but none of them really worked for us until this one. If you want to have an extraordinary marriage, this is the book to read. It doesn't give rules and standards with a view to "the husband should" or "the wife should..." That seemed to be the formula for all the other marriage books we read, and it just didn't work for us. This book explores how two very individual people can come together in an extraordinary relationship. It provides the broad outline and it's up to each couple to fill in the details however they work for them. It's filled with spiritual principles (without being too preachy), interesting quotes and fun, revealing exercises. The best part was all the things this book gave us to talk about.

An enlightening look at a unique, american artist

After admiring the artwork displayed on my sister's notebook, I was to curious to find more about Abbot Handerson Thayer and his body of work. Since this was the only book I could find of the man, I would have to say it is the best. Inside it gives a brief biography of the artist including photos of him, his family and friends, and various paintings finished and unfinished. Unfortunately, a majority of the pictures are black and white(which sucks) and it is a glossy paperback(whoopee!). If, however, you do enjoy Thayer's style, I would recommend another artist, Thomas Wilmer Dewing. Both share a passion for painting angels and being long- dead- and- forgotten artists who are probably burning in hell thinking that piety can be found in creativity(ha! ha! suckers!).

Incredible! I'm not an avid reader, but when I started reading this book, I couldn't put it down. When I finished, I wanted my husband to read it, he's not interested in fiction stories, but when I started reading it to him, he didn't want me to stop! We took turns reading it all night until we were finished. All my friends I've loaned it to have appreciated and loved the story just as much. It gives an incredible perspective of the pre-earth life, how we and our friends from pre-earth life come together on earth, and the "big picture" in life. I'll never forget it.

_Adrift on the Haunted Seas: The Best Short Stories of William Hope Hodgson_ is an excellent collection of the various eerie sea stories of William Hope Hodgson (1877-1918). Praised as an expert story-teller by H. P. Lovecraft, Hodgson was British born and became a cabin boy on a ship defying his father's wishes. Hodgson was obsessed with physical training and developed his body as he traveled on the seas, but during his spare time he engaged in reading and taking photographs. Later, Hodgson was to become a writer who wrote stories about the seafaring life and incorporated uncanny elements in them revealing the mysteries of the open sea. Hodgson's stories are unique in his ability for "conveying feelings of the spectral and abnormal" as H. P. Lovecraft put it. These stories are filled with strange sea creatures, such as deadly molds and fungi, gigantic crabs, sea serpents, octopi (the dreaded "devil-fish"), and sea caterpillars, and haunted direlects. The stories also feature the natural atmospheric occurrences of the sea, including deadly lightning and cyclones, as well as earthquakes. One of the stories in this collection also includes the element of magical rites in it and another features a sea-ghoul. In addition, a great number of Hodgson's stories reveal his fascination with the Sargasso Sea, a snare of weed-patched sea in the mid-Atlantic that became legendary to sailors. Indeed, frequently ships appear caught in the weed of the Sargasso Sea and nefarious sea creatures lurk beneath it in the stories. This collection also features some poetry of Hodgson as well. Hodgson was later to enlist during the First World War and was killed in battle.

This collection includes the following stories and poems of Hodgson:

"On the Bridge"

"The Voice in the Night"

"Grey Seas are Dreaming of My Death" (verse)

"Out of the Storm"

"The Voice in the Dawn"

"The Haunted Jarvee"

"From the Tideless Sea (First Part and Second Part)"

"The Derelict"

"The Wild Man of the Sea"

"The Place of Storms" (verse)

"The Haunted Pampero"

"An Adventure of the Deep Waters"

"Demons of the Sea"

"Through the Vortex of a Cyclone"

"The Finding of the Graiken"

"A Tropical Horror"

"Thou Living Sea" (verse)

"The Mystery of the Derelict"

"The Stone Ship"

"The Shamraken Homeward-Bounder"

"Farewell" (verse).

These stories are very well written and interesting and will appeal to all those who enjoy the weird element and eerie description of the strange and supernatural and sea-faring lore.

This is a wonderful little book filled with 1-2 page anecdotes from days gone by. The author writes in a conversational fashion, creating a relaxed tone that enhances his stories of the rural Virginia of his birth. The stories range from heart-warming to incredulous but are always entertaining and frequently produce a hearty laugh for the reader. It would be a welcome addition for anyone looking for diversion from these hectic times.
