Extraordinary Ideas for Extraordinary Week!

Review Date: 2008-06-27
This 24-page book has 18 ideas you can do with your kids at home or with your children's ministry to help them experience and understand the events of Passion Week leading up to Easter!!! It contains Bible experience ideas for preschoolers, crafts, snacks, games, and object lessons! I used several ideas for Easter this year, and the kids at my church really enjoyed the experiencing the Bible instead of just hearing stories! I can't wait to get the Christmas edition!!!

Set aside you other curriculum!

Don't let the size of this little book fool you-it is packed full of fun activities that will help each child better understand the foundation of the Christian faith: Easter. Through activities that touch on all learning styles, kids will experience four major components of holy week: Palm Sunday, Jesus Washes the Disciples Feet, Good Friday and Easter Sunday. Each section contains the Bible experience, hands-on activities and fun, age-appropriate ways to understand life-application. You could use this for four weeks leading up to Easter, or over several days. This is an amazing resource that I am definitely putting to the front of the line this year. My regular curriculum can wait-kids are going to love this! The supplies and preparation are minimal, too, so your volunteers will be thrilled with leading these activities!

I teach literature at the community college level, and ever since I came across this collection a few years ago I have used it in my classes. These poems are exemplary examples of raw free form verse, and the accompanying photography is equally as lovely and thoughtful. (This collection makes for a great discussion of imagery in both written and visual forms.) I think I've convinced some of my students to like poetry after reading this - the poems make an impression that stays with the reader. Another reviewer described this collection as haunting; I'd add captivating.

haunting; profoundly moving

I picked this book up at an Indie book store in Los Angeles. It is only 38 pages, but each page is haunting and profound. It is kind of a journey book of experience. I would have picked it up just for the poetry or just for the photography for each are equally good. The photography doesn't directly correspond with the poetry as far as images. It however is the same mood and depth, thereby intensifying the feeling. There is mostly black and white, although there are a few touches of color. This book is dark, so if you want happy poems with clouds and kittens, this isn't for you. However, I love this book and pick it up every so often when I want to go to that place of contemplation or want to read some really good verse. Lara Anderson has a way of going further into the core of what makes us tick. Some great lines: "What is weak detaches from old ways/ lovers' lipstick fades/their mouths sale with honesty." Another: "We left the house and it's traces of still voices/ The moths swarmed around my head/ their wings fluttering in my hair/caught in my honey of warm fear/their dust spreading the sunset." Beauty and pain juxtaposing. Just like life; great.

This is something unusual in the field of building. A book that describes in detail how technical innovations can be both poetically and environmentally friendly. The voice of underdeveloped Countries is distinctly heard in the soft tones of Eladio Dieste architectural works. As Holderlin once wrote: "full of merits but poetically dwells Man on this Earth."

Great book

I'm from Uruguay, and although Eladio Dieste is from my country, I haven't been able to find any good books about him at local bookstores.
This book has great photos and an excelent analysis of his constructions.

AN IDEA WHOSE TIME HAS COME
Helpful Votes: 10 out of 10 total.
Review Date: 2003-05-21
ELDER WISDOM CIRCLE is subtitled "Letters Guidance and Advice from America's Elders" and that subtitle exactly describes the book's contents. In my opinion, the concept of making a group of elders available to dispense the wisdom that comes from a lifetime's experience is an (old) idea whose time has come (again). If you're up on your history, you know that many cultures have revered and consulted their elders for just that reason. Doug Meckelson, founder of the Elder Wisdom Circle, seems to have realized that our society hasn't recognized this valuable asset of our seniors, and that the Internet is just the vehicle to provide such a service.

With this in mind he set up a website ... The letters and responses from the elders that are quoted in this volume make one believe that Mr. Meckelson has come up with a winner. By making a large number of seniors available to field questions, the Circle seems to almost always have someone available who has the experience to field almost any type of request for advice.

In addition, the letters and responses make for good reading. You can flip open the book to a page at random and you might find some suggestions that are useful to you or someone you know. You may also find yourself crying with one of the letter writers or joining the elder advice giver and tell another suggestion seeker to wise up and stop repeating negative patterns, or to even want to give your own hint on how to handle a maintenance or housing problem. These seniors do all of these and more.

According to the information on the back of the book: "(All) of the Elders are volunteer senior citizens who offer their lifelong learning and insight . . . to anyone with a question." We are also informed that "there are misspellings and errors . . . all letters are exactly as written (in order) to retain original flavor and attitude . . . typos, abbreviations, and biting advice are included." The service is free by the way.

The Elders have fielded questions on subjects as varied as: relationships with partners (cheating, abusive, or otherwise); in-law problems; teen age relationship/school/parent problems; work and related problems; and even requests for gardening and home maintenance advice, and my favorite, the request for the recipe for Shoofly Pie. (Which is provided in detail.)

Are the suggestions given always on the mark? Probably not, but enough of them are that I wish that I'd had this resource available at certain junctures in my life. Along this line, I noticed one or two letters that indicated that the suggestions they had received didn't exactly work for the writer, and he wondered if there might be any other advice available. The beauty of The Elder Wisdom Circle is that there are enough seniors with enough different sets of experience that there probably is someone else who might lend a little different viewpoint.

Elder Wisdom Circle does make the caveat that they will not give specific legal, tax, investment, or medical advice. Additionally, from the letters written, I noted that these seniors knew when a problem needed to be handled by a professional (clinical depression comes to mind) and recommended that the letter writer consult the appropriate professional.

To summarize: based on the advice and suggestions given by these elders, I wouldn't hesitate to seek their advice. Just reading the book gave me food for thought in a troubling area or two and, of course, I now know how to make Shoofly Pie.

This interesting volume of advice letters from America's senior citizens really grabbed me as a sociological event as well as a fun read to page through. These letters were written and posted to the elder wisdom circle website and compiled in to a book. Hopefully they will continue to publish these letters. Great gifts for families and seniors....my copy is making the rounds to my sisters, parents, and friends.

Cogito's Elctronic Companion to Genetics is an excellent tool for anyone involved with, or just intereseted in, the field of Genetics. The illustrations are very clear and understandable, and the sections on mitosis, meiosis, and recombination are vividly animated, facilitating understanding of these processes. And Cogito makes all of the material interesting and enjoyable to learn.

Excellent college book and I intend to keep this in my library for future reference. This book was well done for the beginner and some advance users. This book covers many step-by-step solutions using excel and the "TI83 calculator."

I used this book for an online stats with ease.

I did not have the luxary of an instructor guide me through problems and have my questions clarified in class. I took the class online and I had no problem inderstanding how to wrok out the problems. It goes into detail on how to work out problems and gives examples step by step. There are also a lot of practice problems in the text with odd numbers answered for review. The CD in also a great learning advantage with some of the chapters with E-professor. Excellent to walk you through your stats course.

This book is a great reference guide. I used it with the video Human Factors & Pilot Error and it helped me to recognize lots of things I do that can affect my concentration when I fly. I recommend it to every pilot, especially flight instructors who want to teach their students right.

A book needed by every pilot.

Well-publicized accidents only draw attention to how many factors play into our ability to control an airplane. Rarely taken into account is the type of foods eaten or not eaten prior to flight, the chemical exposure of the pilot, the ionization of the atmosphere and even jet lag symptoms. This book is a wonderful guide that all pilots from Cessna 150 flyers to 747 drivers can benefit from. They will get food for thought and information that can keep them at their top physical and mental condition before and during their flight. The book can be used as a text book along with an instructional video...Human Factors and Pilot Error that was filmed at an FAA Safety Seminar in 1999.

i loved this cookbook when i was little and still enjoy it now. i read it over and over again. it's actually quite charming and has a nice little story line to go along with the recipes and it's full of interesting nutrition facts. it does have recipes for sweets, but kids deserve treats now and then, and homemade sweets are certainly better than candy or any of those horrible snacks that are filled with chemicals and food-coloring. overall the food is very "wholesome". BUY THIS BOOK FOR YOUR KIDS! adults have a responsibility to encourage healthy eating and this book will help.

best kids cookbook out there!

This has to be the best cookbook for kids ever written. I remember loving this book as a young girl and checking it out of the library constantly. The reason that I liked it so much is because, not only does it give you recipies, but it also follows a storyline. I also loved this book because the recipies werent too complicated and actually WORKED, which was very important for me, the perfectionist 10 year old. This is an awesome book for any kid, boy or girl, and I guarantee that they will enjoy it as much as I did. I also recommend any of the other books written by Christina Bjork and Lena Anderson.
