Brilliant Work on Southern Demagouge!

This work is a must read for anyone interested in southern history, or in demagougery in the U.S., or in southern politics! The author does an excellent job -- in a very interesting and readable narrative -- of truly capturing the colorful Eugene Talmadge, four times elected Governor of Georgia! He captures the real Gene, from Talmadge's red suspenders, to his plants at political rallies, to his outlandish, dogmatic ways -- such as the time he caused the Univ. of Ga. to lose its accreditation. As a teacher and historian, this book is one of the very best I have ever read!

A sweeping, incisive, colorful view of the life and times of the man in red galluses, Eugene Talmadge, famous for his slogan, "The poor Georgia dirt farmer ain't got but three friends who never let him down: God, Sears Roebuck, and Ol' Gene."

Ever wonder why you might be a user on your own machine?

To tell the truth, I have only browsed this book. But, if you are like me and have ever wondered what the purpose of the password is on a Windows 95 or 98 computer, this is the best place to start learning. The only other place I seen this discussed is in the Microsoft Windows 95 Resource Kit, a huge 1300 page volume. The book is mostly oriented around a computer running Windows on a network. If you are the only user, your concern is with a "stand alone computer" application which Stacey Anderson-Redick does address.

The strong part of this book to tell the reader the security holes of System Policy Editor itself. If anyone knows the hole he knows how to secure the network. Due to System Policy Editor's limitation it needs to use third party software, the writer suggested.

The week part is, the writer suggested something in one chapter and the same thing to other chapter. Duplicate suggestioning. First few chapters details the System Policy and it's implementation. Rest of the chapters details each template files structure. As to implement the policy a Network Admin don't need the unnessary details. It could save some pages and price would drop.

Though it's limitation I like the writer's expert writing style and give the book ALL STARS.

Great for troubleshooting

I have been trying to use system policies on our Win98 systems for several months with some success. This book helped me to not only improve my existing Win98 policies, but to solve some very annoying problems. The troubleshooting pages were very helpful, as was the chapter on other ways to increase Win98 security. Hopefully there will be a second edition including Win2k before I'm ready to upgrade our systems.

I went through the program about nine years ago. It changed my life. I used to do everything I could to make sure that everyone around me was happy. The problem was that I was very unhappy and very stressed. The program has caused me to see that I am not the source of everyones happiness. It also helped me to gain the self value to be able to lose 100 pounds and keep it off because I feel good about myself. Feeling bad about yourself is a vicious cycle and never gets you anywhere. I can now say no to others when I need to and not feel guilty. There is such freedom in knowing who I am and how I am put together. I have led 3 groups through this program. It is easy to use as a leader especially if you go through it first in a group or on your own first. I think the best thing of all was when I led my family through the program. We all grew as individuals and as a family. It changed our attitudes and the way that we deal with each other in good times and bad. Wings of Faith not only helps you to understand yourself but it gives you insight into why other people act the way they do. It helps you not to take things personally and to think the best of others and give them the benefit of the doubt. Try it! You will never be the same!!

Four one-act plays filled with humor!
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 1 total.
Review Date: 2006-03-03
Robert Anderson was born in 1917 and was successful author of plays and screenplays in the 50's and 60's. This play is included in The Best American Plays 6th series which covers 1963-1967.

You Know I Can't Hear You When the Water's Running is composed of four one-act plays that are very humorous and a great entertaining read: The Shock of Recognition; The Footsteps of Doves; I'll Be Home For Christmas; and I'm Herbert.

"The Shock of Recognition" - takes place in a producer's office as Herb, who is producing the play by writer Jack Barnstable, and Herb questions a line in the play about a man, who responds to his wife and comes out "naked" - full frontal naked and says "you know I can't hear you when the water's running."

Naked is the issue and not the adonnis-type naked, more on the pathetic and ridiculous naked. Jack stands by his reasoning for the line in that the naked man should have a shock value to the audience in that they recognize themselves with naked as ridiculous. The dialogue exchange is funny and brilliantly written.

"The Footsteps of Doves" - The setting is in a basement of a store that sells beds and mattresses. The main characters are a 40ish man George and his wife Harriet. They are here to buy a bed and after 20 years of marriage, Harriet wishes to buy a single bed, while George argues his point to keep a double. Their marital dismay and sexual angst are played in discussion and disagreements in front of the salesman. Excellent play with great dialogue and and it would be great to see this played out on stage.

"I'll be Home for Cristmas" shifts the banter to married couple in their 40's as the wife, Edith, is concerned about the coming-of-age sexualism of the children while husband Chuck's way of responding is easy-going with some sarcasm. An example is when Edith says, "I think Timmy is playing with himself." Chuck response is "God I hope so, if he isn't, he's a freak." This is filled with great humor!

"I'm Herbert" is a classic depiction when very old age and loss of memory fuse within a married couple who have both had a few previous husbands or wives, and with a slip of the tongue, the names and places of the past get confusing. This too is brilliant. ....MzRizz

This is based on a play about two elderly people with memories half gone. who are reminising about former spouses and events. It's charming. They mix their details and other spouses and do it in such a loving way that when I saw I, I no longer feared being lonely and aging alone.

One Hundred and Twenty Walks in Victoria

Review Date: 1999-12-25
I discovered an earlier edition of this truly great book in my local book shop and have since walked most of the walks in both the earlier and this current edition. It has to be the bible for anyone wanting to experience the joys the State of Victoria in Australia has to offer. The track notes are concise, yet easy to follow and are accompanied by useful maps for each walk. The publishers would be advised to re-think their layout designs as the book has a decidedly old fashion feel about it, BUT this does not detract from the usefulness of the book. WELL DONE MR THOMAS !

Classic Year, Classy Magazine

Review Date: 2005-02-03
Sport Magazine set the bar for all others. This collection of reprints celebrates the year of 1955, a year of anti-dynasty where championships were celebrated in Brooklyn, Syracuse, Cleveland and Detroit. Most of the articles are from 1955 or 1956. The one on Arnold Palmer is from 1958 and two articles are from the sixties. This gives the collection a touch of historical perspective in keeping with the spirit of Sport Magazine which usually had one article per issue looking at the past. There is a nice color portrait preceding each article and all are reprinted word for word.

Each entry is worth reading. My favorites were Frank Graham Sr. on the Brooklyn Dodgers, the great Arnold Hano on Doak Walker and John M. Ross on Sugar Ray Robinson. The memories of going to the candy store with my allowance in hand to buy Sport Magazine on the date each new issue came out returned to me as I read this book. I was just as excited to see the names of the writers as the athletes they were writing about. A most rewarding experience.

Sport magazine got it right; I could read it as a kid and yet never felt talked I was being talked down to. This anthology captures the spirit before "Moneyball." The Doak Walker chapter practically carried the book to the cashier for me; I'd been interested in the Texas legend since Dan Jenkins' "I'll Tell You One Thing," and it's very instructive for like me who had assumed the NFL began with Johnny Unitas. The Mickey Mantle piece is very interesting, and I recommend it particularly to Jason Giambi for this challenging coming season. The tinted photographs make the book worth coming back to, and it fits in your pocket for road trips (unlike Underworld).

My company provided us with this book in a recent training. Most of the trainings are boring and something memorable for only a short time. This book is not that. The simple metaphor used in the introduction, and the entire basis of the book is very meaningful and easy to see in action. Today I hear so many people complain and feel that they are entitled to things instead of taking responsibility for their actions. This book shows that the smallest increment of effort can have positive effects not only on your professional life, but all aspects. This book uses real life examples that are easily relatable and prove the point. This is a quick read, but definitely worth the price and definitely applicable to life. I highly recommend this book.

Better Than Paying For Lessons
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 2 total.
Review Date: 2007-08-16
If you want to stop throwing your money away on a twirpy little unhelpful, unprofessional, underfed, cocaine addicted swindler of a violin instructor who ruins your entire week in a mere half an hour and ghoulishly helps himself to your hard earned money just to pay for his own sicko addiction then this is the self-help, do-it-yourself manual you've dreamed of. This one book is pretty straight forward and has saved me hundreds of dollars on lessons. I don't even go to lessons anymore, I just teach myself and I've made great progress.

There's some pictures and diagrams as well in here to help you with fingering but be forewarned that the fingering suggested in this book might be a bit difficult for some. It all depends on how skinny (or how fat) your fingers are and how flexible those muscles inside your fingers are. If your fingers aren't that flexible try wrapping a tight rubber band around them and then trying to spread your fingers, sort of like a spider. After a week or two you'll notice a difference.

Also, for me at least it helps to use only my ring finger to play some notes (G on D string and D on A string) whereas this book suggests you use 3 (index, middle and ring). It just depends on what you're comfortable with, everyone is going to be different and some folks might enjoy the method this book gives the most. Just be aware that there are alot of different fingering techniques to use, not just the ones shown here.

Other than that this is definately self-explanitory enough for you to finish yourself without paying good money for an instructor. Good investment for anyone starting the violin.
