This is an excellent book for anyone having doubt about their faith. My doubt started after my second son was born and I went through post-partum depression again. I've never doubted God and had a radical conversion so I was really confused why all of a sudden I was attacked with doubt. Anyway, the author does a fantastic job at defining what faith is and what faith is not. Also does a great job discussing the different "faces" of doubt (depression, personality, etc).

For what it's worth . . . this is a book that will stay on my bookshelf. Way to go Lynn Anderson. I would also recommend God in the Dark for anyone seeking answers to their doubt.

It's okay

This is not a bad book. The author seems sincere enough. He (yes, Lynn is a 'he') made an honest attempt to answer his question. I almost finished reading it; so that's pretty good.

Jean Campbell's review of "Inland Island: The Sutter Buttes" is right on. This is an incredibly beautiful natural history book, both in its design and its text, and the drawings and color photographs are also marvelous!

Even the forwards (by David Cavagnaro and Craig Childs) are wonderful and informative.

I think this book will become the most-read natural history of The Buttes, but it is also in large part a natural history of much of northern California. I recommend it highly to all naturalists and environmentalists....it's a gem....

So Much More than a book on the Sutter Buttes

As a Professional Biologist I approached Walt Anderson's book with a critical eye to accuracy and detail. As a natural history student I approached his book with a curiosity about the Sutter Buttes, a place I have not yet visited (but now plan to).

In both instances I was thoroughly satisfied and excited by what I found. Clearly, Walt Anderson is a gifted writer and teacher. His subtle use of wit makes the reading most enjoyable. I felt as though the author and I might be standing on a hillside in the Buttes while he offered his observations, filtered through is obvious joy of knowing this special place.

His ability to introduce the natural history novice to advanced concepts and terms, while maintaining a sophistacted and scholarly treatment of the subject that will satisfy even the most critical naturalist, reflects his talent as a writer and teacher. In fact, I am now using his book as a resource for a book I am presently working on about another special place. Thanks Walt for the deep research and reporting.

Sure, this book is filled with fascinating facts about the Sutter Buttes, from its geological formation through minutia about the life histories of wild residents of the Buttes, but the book is much more than a dry treatise on the natural history of the Sutter Buttes. Rather, it is a journey through this special place in the natural world with a most talented guide. Don't miss this most complete and enjoyable tour from the perspective of one who truly knows this place.

A Natural History with Passion

Inland Island: The Sutter Buttes is one of the best natural histories that I have seen for going beyond mere descriptions of parts (flora, fauna, and geography) and imparting a true sense of place. Without question, a sense of place requires a detailed description of all the parts for these are its building blocks. Walt Anderson catalogues these parts for the Sutter Buttes as well as can be found in any number of monographs of local natural histories. However, the parts are just the parts and its not until we become aware of their interactions through stories of living actions that a sense of how everything comes together to give a place its character begins to emerge. Here, Walt Anderson excels in giving us several stories such as Red Tail Hawks catching ground squirrels and Turkey Vultures pelting him with excrement as he lectures to a class. He does this with tongue-in-cheek humor and with the warm sentiment that conveys a deep and abiding passion for the whole of the place as well as for all its parts. I believe that a sense of place is primal in finding the deep satisfaction that can come from connecting with the natural world. Walt Anderson does this for us with uncommonly good writing and an obvious passion. His passion sets this book apart from others.

Dr. Anderson's vulnerable revelation of his growing up years both at home; in Swedish Kingsburg and on the battle field allowed those of us with WW II veteran father's to understand the "Greatest Generation" which made it clear that many returning Veterans refused to or couldn't talk about their war experiences and knowing that made my father's unwillingness to talk about the war and the pain he suffered more understandable...so when Dr. Anderson confronted his own hypocrisy (as a psychologist) in "Not Talking" about his pain and did so in his book...allowed me to empathize and understand my Dad's crippling emotional pain...the book was magnetizing and a very worthy read...thanks for the therapy!!! Bob Anderson has crafted a different war story. Each chapter provides a bayonet thrust punch accentuated by reflections of his idyllic childhood on a California ranch. "Innocent Killer" shines a penetrating light on the insanity of war and dispassionately describes both the incredible journey and harsh evolution of his survival

I have taught with several of the major readers on the market: Samovar and Porter's, Nakayama and Martin, and others. This text has the most well written readings and contains articles on many seminal issues, context (Hall), time (Hall), etc. This text has the LEAST blatantly fluff filled articles intended only to titillate and pander to students. Additionally, if you review some of the other texts, you will see that they often have poorly referenced articles and the work is less than scholarly. It is possible to write a chapter for a reader such as this and support your content with support and references. The articles here are interesting, well written, well referenced, and more-grounded in theory and research than a lot of the competition. I recommend it highly. MLK

A masterpiece of Socratic/existential reflection on life

Edward Mooney is owed a great debt of thanks for reprinting this lost classic from the 1960s in the tradition of Thoreau's *Walden Pond.* *The Inward Morning* is a reflection on life in journal form comparable to Dag Hammerskold's *Markings,* but far more profound philosophically. Bugbee, a former Harvard professor, records his own most provocative thoughts about the nature of individual selfhood, our relations to others and the environment, how we articulate our goals and passions, our way of finding a place in the world and a sense of attentive/responsive connection to being in general, and so much more. It is a book not only for professional philosophers (who will find it full of insights in moral psychology and philosophical anthropology), but just as much for students and laypersons still searching for answers to life's most profound questions. It would make an excellent addition to a syllabus for a course on the Meaning of Life, or Philosophy in the Wilderness (say along with Thoreau, Emerson), or perhaps even Deep Ecology (along with Leopold and Naess). It would also make a great gift for anyone with a love for a penetrating and endlessly novel perspective on human existence.

After years of studying philosophy, this book stands out as my favorite. Bugbee writes in a journal format. As a result, readers see the development of his ideas. Unlike much philosophy, we get to see the person behind the words. The end result for the reader is a feeling of completeness and candor lacking in much philosophy

I remember reading this book as a child, and being fascinated by the beauty of the illustrations. The story itself is wonderful, but it seems that as a kid growing up in the United States, I seldom read or heard about kids living in tropical/Caribbean settings. This book filled that void.

A Superb Work of Art History & Biography
Helpful Votes: 4 out of 4 total.
Review Date: 2007-01-30
As an art collector of primarily 19th Century European Art, reading as much as possible on the subject is an indespensible part of the process of building - as well as enjoying - a worthwhile collection. Not the least of the joy of this journey is becoming acquainted with the many fascinating characters who played their parts in such a vastly complex cultural drama as unfolded in 19th Century Europe.

To write an historical biography book as vastly complex as this, any author is challenged with fairly and accurately depicting the artist, his many dealers, critics and patrons, as well as friends & family. Then, placing this cast within the flow of the larger social, political, and economic trends of the period. A lot of balls to keep in the air without confusing the reader.

Like any other group, we can visualize the quality of the results of such authors as falling into something akin to a bell curve. A "normal distribution", if you will. And as one would expect, only very few place at the far right portion of the curve. This book is one of those rare gems.

Even when compared to the well written biographies of J.M.W. Turner, John Constable, Mary Cassatt, and Renoir this volume stands out.

The depth and quality of the research is unsurpassed, in my opinion.
As is the authors brilliant handling of the daunting task of selecting and organizing all that material into a flowing narrative that informs, holds the attention and entertains.

James NcHeill Whistler: Beyond the Myth rings all those bells clearly and harmoniously. In fact, of the many art historical works I've read the only one which stands on equal ground is John Rewald's outstanding work: The History of Impressionism.

If you're looking for a sometimes exciting, humorous, and honestly told story of a visionary artistic genius who, despite his character flaws, produced some of the finest art of the 19th Century? This book is a must read.

Whistler: Egotist and Great Artist!

Review Date: 2005-06-10
James McNeill Whistler is perhaps best known for his "Arrangement in Grey and Black", also known as "Whistler's Mother." Except for art historians and perhaps some interested art collectors, his "Nocturne in Black and Gold" (which I like) is little known to the public. The furor that the later painting caused (including Whistler's suit against Ruskin over the latter's criticism of the work), seems odd to us now, but it nearly ruined Whistler, who won the suit but went bankrupt in the process. My own impression is that Ruskin was the biggest egotist in this contest, but both were pretty obnoxious. Whistler was famous during his lifetime for being arrogant and egotistical. However, at least he had something to be arrogant about- he was a genuinely great artist; an artist who influenced later artists such as Picasso, Rothko and probably Matisse.

Ronald Anderson and Anne Koval have, in a meticulously researched book, given us a full account of Whistler and his times in "James McNeil Whistler: Beyond the Myth". Whistler's triumphs and failures, as well as his sometimes tragic personal life are all here. His wife's death from cancer was particularly touching and his devotion to her spoke well of him, despite his other faults.

This is also a very interesting period in the history of art as Whistler went one way and Gauguin and Van Gough another in diverging from the impressionist's methods. Whatever can be said about Whistler, it must be noted that he had an impact on art and this is about as much as can be said for any artist. That he had major flaws is not contestable, but his great contribution to the development of modern art is (I think - as a somewhat informed layman) also not contestable.

This is a good book for those interested in the development of modern art from Impressionism. There are several other recent books on Whistler, which I have not read so I cannot compare them, however I recommend this book highly based on its own merits.

THE ARTIST BEHIND THE MYTH
Helpful Votes: 7 out of 8 total.
Review Date: 2004-04-17
This life rendering of many faceted artist James McNeill Whistler is fine reading and a treasured contribution to the annals of art history.

Taking the best of Impressionism and Realism, Whistler's uniquely individual treatments of color are unforgettable. We think of "Nocturne In Blue and Gold," his muted yet powerful study of London's Old Battersea Bridge.

Born in Massachusetts in 1834, Whistler spent part of his youth in Russia. For a time he lived in Paris, where he was an adherent of Courbet's. Later, he settled in London, becoming a friend of Oscar Wilde's and a visible "dandy" of the art circuit.

Whistler's intriguing personal self seemed to belie the public persona he assiduously created. English art historians Anderson and Koval have, indeed, revealed the man behind the myth.

Anderson creates a very "human" view of our Attorney General. He address many 'rumors' and puts them to rest, rather well. This book is far more educational than One might expect, and delves into the relm of politics. Anderson defines The A.G. as a social reformist, and I think he made a correct assessment of her life long pursuits to make this country a better place. Anderson will have you cheering and praising Janet Reno. I was well pleased with this work.

What Anderson does here is remarkable. In this first book he reflects back to us some of the awkward inadequasies with which we all live in a subtle voice polished with undeniable wit. From snipe hunts to Icarus to the all familiar football coach, Anderson has produced a collection that may be his first but promises to not be his last.

Precise, Accessible Poetry

Review Date: 1997-07-16
January Rain marks the introduction of a very fine poet. Daniel's poetry is so precise (the meter is nearly perfect in EVERY poem) that one worries the subject matter may suffer. Amazingly, Anderson's poems are filled with images which strike a chord in everyone. "The Last Resort" took me straight back to a vacation in a place much like the one he is describing. And "Snipe! Snipe! Snipe!" starts the reader with a funny, laughable image of a young child trying to fit in but manages to turn to a scene with a lover without hesitation. The concept of a man who never knows when to say when is portrayed in an unusual, yet extremely successful, manner. For those who are loyal to poetry, this is one collection you cannot miss. For those who regard poetry as inaccessible and lacking in reward to those who struggle with it, give this collection a try. January Rain is fabulous
