This read was an enormous faith buster for me personally. It has help to equip me with the know how on fighting the enemy. Through it my marriage has been restored, doors have opened for me career wise and my inner self has reserve stored up for the next time that I will need it. I applaud the author for taking the time to incorporate the Word of God and breaking it down in practical terms allowing it to be transparent for a believer like myself to grasp. God Bless You for your obedience!!!!!

I have used a prayer guide in the past, but this one is really different! It will literally guide you into a new understanding of how God responds to prayer! It taught me to "put Him in remembrance of His word" by praying the Word over my situations, instead of focusing on my problems. Now I speak the Word more than the problems and the Word is overcoming the problems I thought were insurmountable. The scripture references are the best tool possible to understand the basis for the prayers and confessions that apply to your plight. It grows with you, and you will certainly grow with use of this wonderful tool!

An interesting book, even for adults. Set in Russian-occupied Hungary, the novel depicts the repression of the citizenry under Communist rule and the hope of a people yearning for freedom. It is told from the viewpoint of a young teenage boy with whom American kids can identify. The skillfully drawn charaters touch the reader emotionally. A definite must buy for parents wanting to help their children, born in a post Berlin-wall era, understand how Communism can tighten its grip over a society.

An excellent portrayal of a story so familiar to Hungarian refugees who left during and after the '56 revolution. It's truly a book for all ages. A book that draws you in, paints a picture and teaches lessons of life.

The Fall of The Red Star is an incredibly captivating book that is applicable today to convey to children of all ages what people go through and the changes seen during a war. This book was read to my daughter's fourth grade class. They were amazed at what this normal kid went through, watching his 'normal' daily activities change from school, homework, parties, and chores into the horror of fighting and killing to protect his family and fighting for his country. It is a story all adolescents should read and a horror I wish no one should ever experience. Read this book. Then read it with your kids.

I'm not a big baseball fan but I couldn't put this book down! I like a story that's true to life but has some fun along the way. This book was all of that and more. I laughed, I cried, I learned some lessons and felt good to the core when I was done. What more could you ask for?

Anderson tells it the way it should be and in fact the way it is (and was) when you are a kid. Baseball is the common demoninator that allowed barriers to be crossed. Kids have to be taught to not like people of different races and backgrounds. Left alone Kids will just "enjoy the game". This book is a wonderful lesson for us all. It is a true "American Story". And based on a "real life" experience.

Women will like this story too

While this is most certainly a story about baseball and racism, it is also a warm story. The main character in the story warms a mother's heart. I'll be buying a few of these books for my kids and grandkids.

Lawnmower Blues captures your attention like rapid gunfire.

In the first lines of Rex Anderson's fourth and latest novel we meet the main character, Private Investigator Tony Aapt-- a clever and, well, apt name considering that anything is apt to happen in this fresh and funny story about a David-Duchovny-ish gumshoe who finds himself suddenly reunited with an aging bartender pal, 30 years a widow now and recently come into BIG money, who throws the goofy, charming Tony, teller of tall detective tales, a BIG job-- to prove her husband's alleged suicide was actually cold-blooded murder. It's questionable at first if Tony has the, uh, aptitude to investigate this long-dead case-- thus far his forays into solving crimes and misdemeanors have earned him only an apartment full of shabby furniture, a refrigerator full of low-end domestic beer, and an ancient auto. But off goes Tony through a labyrinth of crossing paths-- from esteemed professors at Rice University to gay bars and their sometimes surprising patrons, from a high schoo! l football star turned big-bellied baseball fanatic to the richest of Houston's rich to the pinnacles of political power. And, in the midst of it all-- the seemingly clear-cut autopsy photos, the clear-eyed newly rich widow who KNOWS who killed her husband and why-- stands the forlorn and baffling lawnmower...

Lawnmower Blues captures your attention like rapid gunfire-- and I promise you will not stop reading this book until Anderson's done with you. If you like murder mysteries heavily peppered with hilarity and the shrewd weaving of people's strange lives and (mis)deeds, this is a must read. If you only treat yourself to one private dick this summer, make it Anderson's Tony Aapt.

Rex Anderson did a great job on this book! It reads like a classic private detective story, but in a modern day setting. The plot moves along nicely and there is the right amount of history provided to fully understand the characters. The book kept me guessing right until the last page! A perfect 3-4 hour book for a trip on the airplane!

In 1999 Houston private investigator Tony Aapt inherited a ton of debt when his grandfather died and left him the family sleuthing business. Fiftyish former bartender Maggie Hawk recently won a sweepstakes that guarantees her 500K per year for twenty years. She wants Tony, who frequented her bar with exaggerated tales of his work, to look into the death of her husband George W. Hawk in 1966. Tony looks at the detailed information she provides him and agrees with the official ruling of suicide until she begins to make a case that her spouse did not kill himself; he was murdered to steal his invention, a safe lawnmower blade.

Needing the money but feeling guilty as the clues will be cold and he has no experience with this type of inquiry Tony begins his investigation. He soon becomes convinced that people were paid off by the legendary lawnmower king Jason Woods to hide a homicide and a stolen invention, but how to prove it proves difficult especially when the target of his case offers him a job he cannot afford to refuse.

Tony makes the case fun to follow as he fumbles and bumbles the investigation, but perhaps it is in the DNA because he keeps moving forward one clue at a time. The hero is apt to fail not only due to his lack of experience, but also he is going up against a highly regarded superheavyweight who has much more power than when he seemingly bribed the world three decades ago. Fans will enjoy the twists to LAWNMOWER BLUES as Rex Anderson provides a fine mystery starring a wannabe hard boiled detective who is undercooked and truly a softy.

I am related to the author, so this was a very personal book. I can still remember the only time that I have ever met Caroline like it was yesterday because she was somebody that really stood out from most people. This is a very inspirational read, and it really teaches you to make the most of your life, because you can never be sure how much time you have left in your life, there are no guarantees. It is a very useful book for someone who has lost a love one, to help them cope with their loss. And I would recommend it to anyone even if they haven't lost a loved one, because it is truly an amazing book, that will give you inspiration, and hope when you need it most.

History as it is...

From the beginning, where Anderson announces that to understand present American politics, one must grasp that Texas is a third world country whose capitol is Houston, he grabs the reader's attention and doesn't let it go. (Not only is Texas a 'third world country,' but Bush et al. have tried to run the US the same way... and were successful for several years.) _Follow_ tracks several characters (DeLay, Bush, Abramoff) through a twisting maze of money laundering, fraud, and crooked politics.

Much of the book focuses on the Delay/Abramoff scandal, though he outlines clear ties between Abramoff and Karl Rove. (eg. Rove's personal assistant is Abramoff's former personal assistant.)

If you're not the sort of person who reads the news, this is not the book for you. If, on the other hand, you wish to know just how the American government was stolen by politicians more familiar with the Banana Republic known as Texas (and how it all fell apart...), buy this book.

"Follow the Money" begins in Houston, a city 62% minority, one of the most ozone-polluted areas in the country, and the largest city in the U.S. without zoning regulations. In 1994, top Texas officials were all Democrats, as was the majority of its House and Senate, and its Congressmen in Washington. The only exception was its two national Senators - both Republicans. George W. Bush won the Governor's seat in 1994, beating incumbent Ann Richards with 53% of the vote. (The author suspects that Rush Limbaugh's popularity in the state was a factor.)

After a brief introduction to James Baker (major player in the Bush I administration, and architect of Bush II's Florida win), the scene shifts inexplicably to Jack Abramoff, Tom DeLay, Grover Norquist, and Karl Rove. It's on to Abramoff's first clients (Marianas Islands - fighting to retain their exemption from U.S. labor laws, and a Mississippi Indian tribe trying to prevent new competition in nearby Alabama), DeLay's creation of the K-Street Project and relief for corporations from taxation and regulation.

Abramoff goes on to create a number of false front organizations to launder his fees and donations, double-cross one Indian tribe client (also worked for their competitor against them), made numerous contacts with Karl Rove and the White House (learned despite use of Republican National Committee e-mails to elude retention requirement), etc.

A well-detailed and sordid history of recent American politics.

"Follow the Money" is, as John Anderson writes, a "first pass at history," an effort to chronicle a "vast web of intrigue." He might well have said a vast web of corruption, as intricate as a Mark Lombardi diagram, for that is the book's subject -- the barely concealed but highly complex efforts of Tom Delay, Jack Abramoff, and a host of others, most with close ties to Texas, in their bald pursuit of money and power. Abramoff's story is particularly appalling -- for example, Anderson explains how Abramoff manipulated the anti-gambling Christian right in the service of his pro-gambling Native American clients who wished to crush competing tribes in nearby states, and then turned around to represent those same competing tribes in their efforts to legalize gambling -- but it is only one strand in Anderson's fascinating story.

Anderson's account is thoroughly documented and fair minded, acknowledging honesty and integrity on either side of the aisle whenever it presents itself. Witness the examples of Paul O'Neill, James Comey, and even John Ashcroft, all of whom come out quite well in Anderson's account.

Although George W. Bush is certainly an actor in this tale, his relative absence, compared to others, is telling in and of itself. Bush is not a prime mover in his own universe. That role falls to others, such as Dick Cheney and Karl Rove (yet another Texan).

Anderson's story, exposing the naked power grab of the Republicans in Washington, D.C. (and particularly in Congress), as well as in Texas, is a shocker. We can only hope the Democrats in Congress, and perhaps soon the White House, do a better job.

This Bible is really great, but it is hard to find. If you call Dr. Anderson's ministry (Freedom In Christ), they will tell you that they are working with the publisher for a reprint, but there is no expected release date at this time.

If you really want the Bible, you should buy it here; I can't find it anywhere else.

However, there is a book that includes all of Dr. Anderson's comments and information from the Freedom In Christ Bible. That book is titled, "The Daily Discipler".

If you already own a Bible, you may want to consider using "The Daily Discipler" with it. Rather than buying a new Bible, just for the added content.

This study Bible is the best I've found for new and older believers. It helps establish believers in the Exchanged Life (Grace). If you don't understand the Father's Love and Grace you will struggle in your Christian life with sin and habits. And you will live under law (Don't do this, don't do that mentality). It's the way unto holiness.

Frogs Without Legs Can't Hear: Nurturing Disciples In Home And Congregation

Best Youth and Family Ministry Book
Helpful Votes: 5 out of 5 total.
Review Date: 2005-11-21
This has got to be the BEST Youth and Family ministry book that I've ever read. It touches on EVERYTHING that the other books don't. There are way too many books that focus on just one age group or just the leaders and youth to make a point. This book speaks of how everybody is needed in faith formation and how those little things like simple smile, handshake, or hello can help a person "come to faith."

The metaphor may seem cheesy at times, but it is very apt. While books like Doug Field's "Purpose Driven Youth Ministry" are good books, they don't touch on how everybody is involved in faith formation. They talk about programs and certain aspects of the ministry that still give congregations problems.

While there's no "one solution" to ministry as it differs from place to place, FROGS WITHOUT LEGS certainly opens one's eyes - it's a great tool, and a great read for anybody interested in youth and family ministry. It brings lots of issues to light.

A Crazy Title - but Solid, Challenging Content

Review Date: 2005-02-25
Anderson and Hill came up with a crazy title and a valiant attempt extending a metaphor for how faith is formed in the lives of young people. But, beyond the "frog without legs" metaphor is a very readable book of solid material based on scripture, research, and experience that invites a cultural shift in how youth ministry is traditionally understood and practiced.
I strongly recommend this book for anyone who has interest in Christian ministry with families, children, youth, young adults or couples. The holistic, integrative perspective presents a healthy, sound course for more effective ministry...or rather, for endeavoring to form a true Christian community of nurture that is assimilated into daily life.
Although it is still popular to speak of "Youth and Family Ministry" as a combined effort in local congregations, Frogs Without Legs... is one of the best volumes that fills out what that phrase actually might mean in practice. This is a great book for groups, parents, or ministry teams to read and discuss together.

After my grandma died, I needed some answers about the "better place" that everyone said she was in. Everyone kept saying that someday I would understand. I didn't want to wait for someday. This book helped me find the answers because it is full of information about the life of the spirit. It explained how I could reach her and it showed me proof that she's still close to me. I love my grandma a lot and I still miss her, but after reading this book, the hurt in my heart has gone away.

We all want to know the answers to the bigger questions: What happens after we die? Can we continue to communicate with our loved ones once they return to spirit? Are they able to help us in any concrete way?

This book takes us beyond conceptual answers to these questions. As Ms. Anderson describes her interactions with her deceased father and the very specific ways he continues to assist his family and others in need, we gain deeper assurance of the ways in which life and love exist before, during, and after our earthly embodiments.

I found it very inspiring! I'm buying multiple copies to give to friends.

Middle School is where life begins to drastically change for children, and Gracie Gannon is no different. "Gracie Gannon: Middle School Zero" is Gracie's story of adapting to the harsh world of Junior High, where she seems to be at the bottom of the totem pole and even her former best friend ignores her. She finds hope and happiness with people she'd never expect. A well written coming of age novel, "Gracie Gannon: Middle School Zero" is highly recommended for community library young adult fiction collections.

Mary Elizabeth Anderson has written a book that I look forward to reading to my three young grand daughters when they become "of age". Through Gracie Gannon, she has exposed many of the problems facing young girls today. While giving in to peer pressure, struggling to "fit in", and going along with the crowd of bullies would have been the easy way out, Gracie has chosen the higher road. It is her strength of character, concern for her ill mother, and efforts of inclusiveness that make her character the one you would like to see more young girls emulate. Being a friend for life is difficult, but it is that loyalty that endears the reader to Gracie. It is a great book about making difficult choices and valuing others because of who they are rather than what they have!

MaryElizabeth Anderson has captured the feelings of what it means to be a young teenager. "Gracie" wins your heart. The book teaches young girls that most girls that age have insecurities; and,you can't always judge another by their actions. A solution to losing friends is look for someone who needs a friend. There are life issues that make our own problems seem less troublesome. Gracie Gannon learns all of these lessons in this book and will give the young reader insights into how to cope in the "middle school" environment. I gave this book to my granddaughters with the hope that by identifying with Gracie, they will be able to make it through the pre-teen and young teenage years with poise and confidence.
