Finally! A comprehensive, and very readable guide to networks. For the novice or the accomplished network manager, this book is a must. What most appeals is the direct, no-nonsense writing style. No mumbo-jumbo geek-slang. Just a clear, concise and exceptionally well researched compendium containing every facet of network operation and management. An excellent feature is the excercise at the end of each chapter. This enables the student to test retention of the information. As a CIO, I have found this book to be invaluable in the preparation of briefings and proposals. This is a must for every IT professionals bookshelf.

Just in two words: it is the best such book on the market now. If you are a student or a trainer - buy it. For a student - everything is explained in very popular and understandable manner. For a trainer - it shows how to talk about networks.

Unlike most of the tomes on networking, this comprehensive survey does a good job of informing the reader in a natural, easy-to-read manner. Anderson seems to know her stuff and balances tech-talk with pragmatism. Recommended for the uninitiated Admin-type as a study or reference work on most LAN technologies.

I would have to say that this book was able to accomplish being both very detailed, and easy to understand. Not something that many authors can achieve. The simplicity in which the chapters are broken down into makes it easy for one to be able to quickly access whatever they need. Not to mention I used this for just one class, and in a semester we only got through about 12 or so chapters, of the 43. Great reference for the future and very highly recommended!

It starts with the basics and covers all details..........

I use this book in most of my Engineering classes because it contains so much information and explains it in ways that make sense to anyone. The older editions have a nicer, more comprehensive index in the back but contain just as much information.

I used this book (7th Edition) as the standard text for my Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering - I took all the electives in Manufacturing Engineering and so can say I covered a very broad range of topics in some depth.

This book is - to say the least - comprehensive. Not only did I find it an easy but thorough reference while taking my courses, I still frequently refer to it over 10 years later. I can honestly say that it is rare that I have to go outside of this book to look up details on basic manufacturing and machining processes.

A real benefit to the way the book has been written is the extensive use of photographs and diagrams to illustrate just about every point (often several to a page). When you are trying to understand real world problems like manufacturing this is essential.

In fact, I would go so far to say as if you are just someone with an inquisitive mind that likes to tinker with machine tools then you'll find this book useful. There have been plenty of times when I stumbled upon something while researching another topic and had a "so that's how they do it" moment.

You won't find extensive theory in the book - if you need to do theoretical calculations on strength of materials etc then you will want to look elsewhere. If you are interested in the practical details of manufacturing processes then this is the one for you. Perhaps thats the reason why this volume gets all the use and my theory books stay in the basement!

By the way, it's a real tome - over 1100 pages in the 7th edition - I'm sure there have been revisions in the 8th edition but haven't seen it yet. Even though it's expensive this book has paid itself off many times over for me.

I am sometimes sorry I cannot give less than one star to some books I have read (I read hundreds of books professionally). On this occasion I am sorry I cannot give more than five stars.

It is absolutely superb, a perfect jewel of a book which I had never heard of and discovered only by chance. The heroic scale and width of concept, and I say this with all seriousness, can be called Shakespearean. Splendid descriptive writing, action and characters, with resonances at the very centre of great mytho-poetry. I knew Poul Anderson was a great writer, but this took my breath away! The best novel I have discovered in years!

An engaging, literate swashbuckler fantasy
Helpful Votes: 4 out of 4 total.
Review Date: 1997-09-05
This is one of my two or three favorite Poul Anderson books and one of my top 20 favorite novels, period. It's a combination alternate history-swashbuckler-magical fantasy set in the era of the war between Cavaliers and Roundheads, but with a difference: they have railroads already. Well plotted, well paced, inventive, suspenseful, great descriptions. Not too deep, though--just great fun. Characters: Traditional but not stereotypical hero, heroine, sidekick, villain, a few historical figures, some familiar literary non-humans and a guest cameo appearance by a character from one of my other favorite stories of his. This story makes one really appreciate how well grounded in history and literature Anderson is. He also displays that all-too-rare ability to use the English language of the past with complete accuracy, a skill the lack of which can easily break the spell of an effort which might have otherwise succeeded. Attention English majors: There's one other feature I won't completely give away so as not to spoil your fun of discovery, but I will say--pay close attention to the dialog

A classic that any fan of Anderson or Shakespeare will love

This is one of those books you want to keep and read again over the years. It's a historical what if? story. What if there was a world where Shakespeare's stories were history rather than fiction and in this world railroads were built 200 years early? It's a wonderful story with all the elements of fantasy of Shakespeare's "A Midsummer Night's Dream" combined with the battle between Royalists and Roundheads in a world of premature steam industry. The only thing that would be more wonderful would be if it were twice as long! This is a book you can read today and it is still as great as when it was written.

A tour de force
Helpful Votes: 9 out of 9 total.
Review Date: 2001-06-02
This story is truly one-of-a-kind; a labor of love (being dedicated to the author's wife) as well as a tour de force. It can be savored on four levels: first as "simply" a fine and original fantasy novel; second as a clever and "natural" (that is, unforced) interweaving of characters and locales from Shakespeare's A Midsummer Night's Dream and The Tempest, with a light seasoning of Arthurian themes; thirdly as a masterful adaptation of the language rhythms of a Shakespeare play (with the chapters/acts divided into "scenes"); and finally as an extraordinary, subtle (that is, unobtrusive) integration of poetry (again a la Shakespeare) into prose narative. For example, chapters or "scenes" occasionally end with a rhymed couplet, but that is only the most obvious of the many Excellencies. All four levels are seamlessly incorporated in a most extraordinary manner. The first time I read this book - in 1974 - I was halfway through before I began to realize what the author had achieved. Thus lovers of fantasy can thoroughly enjoy the story, while connoisseurs of the English language will find additional reasons to rejoice. This book is a gem - a masterpiece. I have treasured my paperback copy for 27 years. I assume it is reprinted regularly, but I have never seen it again in bookstores. It deserves a fine hardcover "limited" edition with illuminated script highlights and four-color illustrations by a top artist sympathetic to the genre. I plan to commission one as soon as I win the power ball.

I truly enjoyed reading this book because the plot is awesome. The storyline holds the reader to the next episode and the next and so on. The author masterfully releases just a taste of whats to come and when you get there, it will blow your mind!! I love the history that she weaves thru out Mitsrayim that do not confuse the reader. The timeline of events are amazing as well as convincing as Ms. Anderson present her compelling recitations of flashbacks of a previous life in ancient Kemet. I too believe that higher beings from other realms of reality help contribute to the profound civilization/culture of Mitsrayim. And I love the font style that makes it such an easy read. This book caters for men and women tastes cause the theme touches on the issues relating to relationships and spirituality and so much more. This book is a TREASURE in its self!

MITSRAYIM is the memoir of a past life in Ancient Egypt, and of the contributions by inhabitants on planet Tiamat(Earth). It is of a time when people were at the height of power, intelligence, and beauty. A time when extraterrestrial beings from other galaxies, which Ms. Anderson believes are still hiding behind the clouds, visited the planet. But this is also a timeless love story with all of the jealousy, betrayal, and sacrifices that make it unforgettable.

Princess Aamina, future ruler of Mitsrayim(Egypt), has been betrothed to King Dumah, future ruler of Sudan, and younger brother of King Daniy'el. Their marriage, arranged when they were children, will unite the two territories and give Dumah absolute power. The wedding is planned for Aamina's nineteenth birthday. Months before the wedding Aamina shares an energy connection with King Daniy'el. The connection leaves her confused but glowing; Dumah has never evoked this level of telepathy.

Openly opposed to the marriage, Daniy'el vigorously woos Aamina. Aamina, yielding to her heart, slips away to Daniy'el's castle. Dumah is furious at their disrepect and plots to take a life and work a potion that will guarantee his marriage to Aamina. He stands to loose a kingdom if they do not marry.

After ten years, Nichel Anderson accepts that she lived a former life, in another time. Influenced by several books on spiritual and intellectual journeys, she writes a mystical story filled with dreams that no longer frighten her. Ms. Anderson was compelled to open up her soul and reveal her journey through one of her many lifetimes; which highlight the mysteries of Ancient Egypt. Her characters are vivid, charismatic, and believable. MITSRAYIM: A Memoir Of A Past Life In Ancient Egypt is part one of her magnificent history.

DUENDE DANCING

Review Date: 2007-12-25
In today's literary market place there are enough poets to fill several Yellow Pages and then an L.L. Bean catalog. The result is a chorus of voices that make the emergence and recognition of any one voice daunting. In my estimation, Doug Anderson is one of the few poets who is both smart, intense, and psychologically fearless. In Anderson's work Eros and Thanatos walk, like the lovers they are, hand-in-hand. Perhaps he was born that way, or made that way by experience (being a medic in Nam might be a crucible) but what he brings to his life and his art is the ability to wed the light and the dark in celebration of both, Lorca's duende dancing. And what a dance it is! I can't recommend his work highly enough to poetry readers, and to those who come with fresh ears. Paul Pines

Doug Anderson's poems are the work of a stellar craftsman. They are deeply nuanced and evocative. There is a precision and beauty to Anderson's lines, even amidst the brutality they explore. It is an essential piece of work, containing some of the essential American war poems of the 20th century--which means this work must be brought with us into the 21st century as well. Like all great literature, the poems in this collection possess a soulfulness and truth that will endure. Anderson is often compared to Tim O'Brien in scope, and I agree with this, but I would also place Anderson next to Wilfred Owen.

This book will stay with you.

This isn't just some of the best poetry from the Viet Nam war. It's some of the best war poetry ever written--not just for the truths it tells, but also for the power and craft of the telling, and its generous range. Anderson brings the brutality of war into vivid relief against the setting in which it occurs:
The way he made that corpse dance/ by emptying one magazine after another into it/ and the way the
corpse's face began to peel off/ like a mask because the skull had been shattered, brains/ spilled out, but
he couldn't stop killing that corpse.

A treeline opens into paddies/quartered by dikes, a moon in each,/ and in the center, the hedged island of
a village/ floats in its own time, ribboned with smoke. Someone is cooking fish./ Whispers move across the
water.

He tells of soldiers during lulls before combat:

Things live in my hair. I do not bathe./ I have thrown away my underwear./ I have forgotten the why of
everything./ I sense an indifference larger than anything/ I know. All that will remain of us/ is rusting metal
disappearing in vines...
A black snake slides off the paddy dike/ into the water and makes the moon shiver.

He tells of combat:

the man in front of me steps on a mine,/loses both legs at the hip, and that's not all...

And a survivor's life back home:

I'm like a country who can't remember the last war./ Well, that's not strictly true./ It's just been too long./
Too long and my heart is like/ a house for sale in a lot full of weeds...
Used to be I'd get a bottle/ and drink until the lights went out/ but now I carry my pain around everywhere I
go/ because I'm afraid/ I might put it down somewhere and lose it./ I've grown tender about my mileage.

Besides all of that there are marvelous poems on Goya's `Disasters of War', a wonderful sequence of replies to Homer, and much more. The Moon Reflected Fire is a masterful, important book of astonishing depth

The Moon Reflected Fire: Poems

I am not a poet. But I have a poet trapped somewhere inside me. A not uncommon condition. And that poet often returns to Doug Anderson's poems for nurture and hope. A turning point in human prehistory was when our ancestors learned not merely to manage fire but to create it. In dark times like these we need someone who knows how to strike one word against another and create flame, light, warmth. Doug Anderson's poems in The Moon Reflected Fire are like that, struck from darkness, casting light, giving off the body-and-soul heat of human recognition.

Navy Life! Ike Anderson grabs the flavor and reality of the life of an enlisted sailor during the Vietnam War. From the jungles in-country, to the deck of a venerable seaplane tender during an extended cruise to Southeast Asia's WESTPAC, the book will be familiar to thousands of men who made similar trips!
His novel catches the spirit and reality of the Navy from the perspective of a young man from the west who grows to adulthood during his enlistment.
Not just a good story, the book speaks to the authors own experience and memory of details of a Navy life.
A great reading experience! The adventure begins with the first page!

I have the CD version of the Mosby's, and although I still prefer books to CDs most ways, the CD version is still a good product, so I thought I'd make a few comments on it.

First the interface, unlike a lot of reference works on CD that I have, is attractive, simple, and overall well done. I have at least 10 different encyclopedias and reference works on CDs at this point, and the Mosby's is one of the best I've seen. It's easier to use than the Britannica or World Book encyclopedias, for example, and more attractive. It's actually very similar to the Oxford Encyclopedia that I have, which divides the screen up into articles on the right-hand side, with the photos or other media and search boxes on the left. This makes for a nice, uncluttered screen. It probably looks best on a 17-inch monitor (16-inch viewable) or better where you can run at 1024 x 768 resolution.

The CD's main features, accessible by icons on the top left of the interface, include a drug guide, handbook of diseases, a human body atlas, resource lists, multimedia, search, and online, which is websites for further information and reseach.

The resource lists include lists and charts of various things such as height and weight measurements for girls and boys, selected genetic disorders, sexually transmitted diseases, safe sex pointers and risks, summary of carbohydrate classes, mode of action of antibiotics, types and causes of fractures, teratogens, and so on. There are about a hundred of these.

The multimedia section includes about 1400 photos, over 70 video animations, many useful tables, and a prounouncing dictionary of over 4000 terms. The voice has that computer-synthesized quality, but it's okay and this feature has certainly improved over earlier programs I've seen incorporating this feature.

Probably most people will be using the drug and disease entries. These aren't too technical and can usually be understand by the lay person with a little knowledge of basic human physiology and anatomy. I wish the drug entries weren't so short and the disease entries were a little more technical myself, but that's just my preference and one has to consider that this isn't a reference work intended for use by physicians. Overall, this is a quality medical reference for many things and a good value for your money, as the CD isn't very expensive compared to the book.

Unlike other books that deal with principles and theories about diversity, David Anderson lives it out both in his personal life and in his ministry. I would wholeheartedly recommend this book as a great tool to begin the process of breaking down the walls of seperation and segregation. Hopefully, a book like this would make "Eleven o'clock Sunday Morning" the most integrated hour.

It doesn't just talk about the reasons for advocating church diversity, it talks about why it doesn't happen in churches and the history behind it. The author gives excellent tools at the end of the book to help churches begin to explore racism and cultural diversity in their own facilities. Thumbs up! When I discovered this book, I was apprehensive, but I went for it and purchased it. All I have to say is WOW! I never realised how flexible Linux is, or how much you could do.

I was thouroughly impressed on the variety of this book. I've finally been inspired to dive right in to Linux.

When most people "use" Linux, they are in fact using the shell, the web server, or any other of the zillions of open source programs that (1) are available for, (2) are distributed with, or (3) can run atop the Linux kernel.

It used to be that there were only a few things you could do with a Linux box (namely run a Unix box as a web server) but the open source community has come a long way in providing (1) applications and (2) hardware support, so that you can now do a lot of things w/ your Linux box that used to only be doable on a Windoze box.

Schwarz et al have put together a smorgasbord of things you can do with your Linux box. These projects range from things you would tend to do on a Unix box (eg IP Masquerade, SSH, system security, even a chapter on writing Apache modules!) to stuff you would expect to need to do on a Windoze box (eg burning CDRs, syncing with Palm devices, and audio/MIDI/image/video processing).

The level of detail in the chapters (as well as the required level of Linux familiarity on the part of the reader) varies considerably -- a hazard of multiple authors and the breadth of the topics covered -- but each chapter starts off with a "Difficult-o-Meter" which more or less accurately states the level of Linux proficiency required.

That said, there are some real gems to be found in this book. There are some pretty hefty howto-like treatments in this book of topics such as system security, "undernets" (collaborative web sites), and setting up a web/IMAP/mail server.

There's a chapter on "Tools You Should Know", which lists the tools a typical Unix hacker should know: regular expressions, vi, dd, sed, diff, etc. Like some other parts of the book, this chapter doesn't give you a lot of information on these individual tools, but it brings them to your attention, so you at least know what to look for.

This book by itself won't turn a newbie into a Linux ninja after one reading, but it is a good overview of many different things that can be done with open source tools on a Linux box. I would highly encourage the prospective reader to take a look at the Table of Contents of this book. If you see a topic you're interested in, then this is a worthwhile book to buy. (I suspect that most folks running Linux at home at a beginner to intermediate level will find several bits of interest in this book.)

I originally bought this book for my oldest daughter, whom loved it and we read it over and over. It has now been handed down to my youngest child and she is obsessed with it! It has been read so much that we have had to tape and glue it back together 3 times! The tune is a catchy favorite that both of my children run around singing over and over again.

I originally purchased this book from a second hand store for my oldest daughter. We read the book over and over, then passed it down to my now 18 month old daughter. She is obsessed with this book. It is the only book she wants to read, it has been read so much that it has been taped and glued back together 3 times. She runs around the house singing the song and begs for more. We LOVE it!!!

This book is creative and excellent.

I am a collector of Noah's Ark and I fell in love with this book as soon as I saw it. I think it is very creative. I cannot wait to read it to young children.

This is a wonderful biblical sing along for children.

"My friend Noah had an ark" is the first line of this wonderful sing along for children and their parents. Can you guess what tune the words are set to? What a great way to introduce children to the story of Noah and the Ark! If you like to sing and pray at bedtime with your little ones - this book is for you!
