My friend bought me this book for my birthday and it was the best gift I recieved. I have always loved dragons and this book provides information on the different types, their habitats, and lots more. I loved the little extras like the dragon scales and the packets of dragon dust and even my four year old loved to look at the beautiful illustrations. This book is perfect for anyone who is fascinated by these mythical creatures.

This book was well worth the buy.
I purchased this book as a gift. The recipient was 7.
Most of the book is still a little much for her yet, but she was beyond excited just the same. There was some that she thinks is interesting now, but as she gets older, there will be so much more for explore in the book. After going through the entire book, you have to remind yourself that dragons truly aren't real!

The eleven-year old who received this book absolutely adored it. It has interesting 'facts' about dragons and many interesting special inserts - it's more of a coffee-table type/reference book than a story. If you have a dragon lover, I'd highly recommend it.

Einstein's legacy not that outrageous

I didn't understand a lot of this book. The physics was largely beyond me and I could not grasp the embedded diagrams that Kip Thorne used. These embedded diagrams attempt to represent three-dimensional space-time on a two-dimensional piece of paper. But I enjoyed reading the book nonetheless. One can look at science in two (or perhaps more) ways; the process and the results. I am interested in process, the building of one idea upon another. And Thorne does this particularly well. I am not a big fan of the results which is a good thing because I didn't really understand them, at least in this book. Thorne also included a lot of biographical information which I found very interesting. Thorne also admitted when he had made mistakes, which was refreshing; a nice human element. The most interesting parts of the book were when he compared the different styles of the various research teams. This is especially true when he compared first the American/British research style with the Russian research style and later in the book, the American, British, and French styles and their differing use of mathematics. Overall, this book was a good read, but by the end I was anxious to finish so that I could start reading Leon Lederman's new offering.

A detailed history of the science of physics

Mr. Thorne offers insight into an important world of science that only a person who has first hand experience could. While this book is a book about black holes, it is just as much a book about the science leading up to the ability of science to recognize and study them. It is very detailed with numerous "boxes" that include extra information. While it is not necessary to have an extensive science background in physics/astrophysics etc..., it would help. If one gives the book the patience that it takes, a world of information is available. It is not a quick read, but it is very interesting stuff no doubt.

Kip S. Thorne explains Einstein's Theory of Relativity well. I have always been interested in time and space, and black holes, and anything that had to do with the universe and space. Thanks to this book my understanding of some theories has increased. I learned more about Enstein's quirks and devotion to the pursuit of scientific knowledge. A fascinating book.

The science behind the movie "Contact"
Helpful Votes: 4 out of 4 total.
Review Date: 2007-06-12
When Carl Sagan wanted to have his fictional herione from Contact travel in time, he turned to Kip Thorne.

This book is Thorne's attempt to more fully explain the science of time travel.

And in the process Thorne takes you to the prediction and discovery of black holes.

First seriously suggested by the theories of Albert Einstein, a black hole is a star that has grown so massive (at least three times the size of our sun) that it litterally can't sustain itself against its own weight. It assumes a gravitional force so powerful that not even light can escape its grasp.

Obviously, therefore, learning what resides beyond the visible dark exterior of a black hole has eluded science.

Yet that dark exterior has fueled speculations that black holes may enable nature (and possibly man) to perform seemingly magical feats.

As mentioned at the outset, one of the most interesting of these feats is time travel and the reason is because the great gravitional power of a black hole litterally allows it to warp the space around it. For us it would be a little like standing on one end of a water bed when someone places an anvil on the other end. Owing to the great weight of the anvil, the bed is contorted and owing to its contortions we find ourselves falling toward the anvil.

Assuming a sufficiently heavy anvil we could see both ends of the water bed being connected.

One obvious challenge would to be travel a black hole without becoming a part of it.

Another not so obvious challenge is the fact wormhole creation at best is an exotic affair not occuring above quantum distances. In this way, any people wishing to use one would have to go an extreme wieght loss program!

Because of its thoroughness, Thorne gives an extended discussion of the characters involved in the story he's telling. For example, Thorne explains that physicists use both flat and curved universe models to understand black hole behavior. Additionally, even though predicted by his theories, Einstein actually disputed the existence of black holes. As a result, the Soviet Union and not the US was the first country to really encourage serious discussion of them. However, once predicted and then once found, black holes became a unique entree into the laws of physics and with it the mind of God himself.

For those who read or saw Contact and enjoyed it, this will be an excellent account of the fact behind the fiction.

This is the shortest book about quantum electrodynamics I've ever read, but it is still full of profound revelations (for instance, electrical charge is really nothing more than the square root of the probability that an electron will couple to a photon, etc)...

It takes a genius to make it simple

Feynman picks the thing that is simplest in the quantum world, a single particle, and explains it using no math. Instead of equations, the quantum theory in this book consists entirely of pictures. But this is not a popularization in the usual sense. This is not gossip about science. This actually is quantum theory in a very simple case. For anyone who wants to know how the universe is put together, this is an astonishing mind opener.

In the Introduction to the 'Strange Theory of Light and Matter' Feynman tells us that what he likes to talk about is the "part of physics that is known, rather than a part that is unknown." And he goes on to give us a thumbnail sketch, a "physicist's history of physics," which shows how physicist's, in their quest to describe the world, continually reduce a group of seemingly unrelated phenomenon to a single phenomenon. So heat and sound were found, thanks to Newton, to be reducible to laws of motion, while electricity, magnetism and light were reducible to Maxwell's electromagnetic wave. In this way physicist's explain the world.

Here one is almost tempted to say that they proceed much as religion and ideology do. Religion has from the beginning of recorded history been taking phenomenon and feelings, like storms and suffering or aging and despair, and molding them into an internally coherent explanation of all that is and was and will be. They do this by separating the relevant from the incidental, then uncovering the essential by excluding the accidental. They simplify. In similar ways ideologues like the communists take what at one time were discreet incidents and disparate facts (for instance, the poverty of the third world and imperialism) and weave them into a grand general explanation. Is science merely the latest avatar of religion? - Or perhaps it is an ideology without tears?

Not so fast! Feynman goes on to show us that attempts to explain the atomic world foundered on the laws of motion. He shows us that the rescue of those shipwrecked on the shoals of classical theory involved the invention of a new, counter-intuitive theory, Quantum Mechanics. He then goes on, while discussing a small portion of that theory, to give us the (deliberately) hilarious and 'absurd' example of how physicists predict how many photons, out of a given number, will be reflected back from a surface. 'Draw little arrows on a piece of paper' and watch the clock, he tells us. And with no explanation as to why this procedure works! Of course, for physics, what matters is that it does work. Physicists have been forced "away from making absolute predictions to merely calculating the probability of an event." But where is the essential, the eternal, the necessary?

Perhaps this is what Feynman is driving at. Science describes, it doesn't explain why. We should all wonder at that. The great 'philosophical' questions that drive theology and political ideology are beyond the purview of physics. Science doesn't create worlds; nor does it 'interpret' or change them, it simply describes what it finds. (It is technology that changes the world.) Freud saw fit to end one of his books by saying that 'our science is no illusion, but it would be an illusion to believe you can find elsewhere what it does not offer.' But how much truer this is of physics! One is then perhaps not surprised to come away from this little book wondering exactly what the status of philosophy, psychoanalysis, politics and religion would be in a genuinely scientific world.

But of course there will never be, given human irrationality, an entirely scientific human culture. This book is a superb introduction to quantum electrodynamics. It's 'experimentalism' and agnosticism towards grand philosophical explanations I found very congenial and convincing. Feynman is an engaging personality and this is an entertaining book. While one doesn't need a degree in physics and math to understand him a lay competence and interest in math and physics is certainly necessary. For those of us still living in a Newtonian world, a dwindling number to be sure, this book will have several surprising moments. But that really is part of the show!

I Say a Prayer for Me was an excellent book. I had actually purchased it locally about 2 years ago and had not gotten around to reading it until we were deciding which book to read next in by Sisterhood Ministries group. I suggested this book, and everyone including myself, could not believe what a great book it was. To read about Stanice's life and her struggles with what God would have her to do, was true testimony of how Faith can turn your life around. After we finished the book, I ordered additional copies from Amazon and gave them to my sisters as gifts, and they also raved about how good this book was and have since purchased additional copies and given them to their friends. Great work, Stanice!!!!

This book was a beautiful source of comfort when Jim and I lost our beloved cat, Dori, to cancer. I had lost pets in the past, but it had been 15 years since my last pet passed away and I had forgotton how devasting the loss of a much loved pet like Dori could be. I received the book while I was trying to cope with the decision to let her go and it helped so much. I want to thank Moira for such an wonderful book! Debbie

I purchased this book a few weeks after the loss of my beloved black lab Java at 13 yrs of age. The pain I felt the morning I had to make the dreaded decision was visceral and made breathing difficult. It was beyond anything I had experienced and simply numbing. The book offered amazing insight into the grieving process and assured me the emotions were expected, natural and eventually the pain would lessen. It also addresses the guilt we feel and our questioning of "could I have done more" or "maybe I made a mistake" which are quite powerful.

This book is a must have guide for any pet owner. My prayers and thoughts are with all of us sharing the pain and loss of a beloved animal, both now and forever.

This is a hard book to read, especially when you have lost a pet or know you are going to lose a beloved pet soon, but it is very useful. Everything about it is kind and understanding, from the abstract cover that does not feature a happy dog or cat to the chapters loaded with advice about all those tough topics we'd rather not think about, including saying goodbye, euthanasia, what to do with the pet's remains, deciding whether to get another pet, providing for pet care in case you die or become disabled, and what to do if you're forced to give your pet away. We don't want to think about these things, but sometimes we need to know. Allen, a writer and pet lover with a master's degree in counseling, has produced a reference every pet owner should keep around, just in case.

My best friend died 1.5 years ago and I still miss her terribly - she was my 15 year old cat. This book was very useful to me during my time of intense mourning. While I know that her loss was a significant and horrible event in my life, recognition of the death of animal companions is not common in our society. This book helped me to see that I was not alone in my grief and that it was okay and normal to feel such grief. I actually purchased several books on this topic and found this one to be the best.

This book is fun to read. The guy doesn't preach, in fact he's constantly poking fun at himself and everyone else. And he treats you like you might actually have a brain that you might even know how to use! You don't get endless breathless hype about the sin of sugar, or recycled pabulum about fat, or snotty rants about chemicals and the evil modern lifestyle. Instead, you get a clear explanation of what nutrients your body needs and how much of them it needs and how to get them without getting a lot of Calories besides. I don't think the book is perfect. It probably ought to have a diet plan for the beginners. But I don't think any serious dieter is going to have any problem doing it.

If you are looking for "fast" weight loss (that will just come back in a month or two) this is not for you. I cannot believe I am actually losing a pound or two a week WITHOUT EFFORT! I am not even doing the suggested 20 minute a day walk. But ALL of my cravings have completely disappeared. Somedays when I am doing this I think "I'm just not hungry, how am I ever going to make myself eat the required number of calories and protien grams." When do you ever hear that from someone on a diet? I feel like someone finally has given me the secret combination that has changed my life from food/weight focused to simply living my life. The 2000 Multi-Diet: Taming The Beast! shows the reader how to easily control his or her weight through eight vital factors that dominate body weight. The author (a researcher who deliberately chose to be anonymous) argues the obesity is a major problem for industrial societies and is a by-product of the success of modern societies at providing better nutrition for their peoples. Fortunately, these societies also have access to the tools and techniques needed to solve obesity problems. The 2000 Multi-Diet: Taming The Beast! offers a new approach to ending personal obesity called "The Threshold Theory" and extrapolates a technique the reader can use to make this approach work for persona weight loss. Obesity is neither a disease nor a "moral weakness". It is caused by an obscure (but normal) reaction to the lack of enough certain non-energy nutrients in the diet, and learning to correct this lack allows weight loss to begin almost automatically. The 2000 Multi-Diet: Taming The Beast! is recommended reading for anyone concerned with personal weight loss and proper nutrition in their diet.

A very sophisticated weight-loss technique!

The threshold theory is an ingenious explanation for why we get fat and what we can do about it. If this guy is right, and it looks like he might be, it changes the world. When you eat the right things, your body has no reason to make you hungry, so you can stop eating so much and lose weight. The Multi-Diet shows what to eat to make this happen. This author definitely makes a persuasive case for the threshold effect being what causes people to get fat. His ideas are clear and consistent with most of the known facts. I do not believe that he has proved his case, that probably won't be done for years. But nonetheless this is some very original thinking tied to some very solid research and I'm certainly losing weight myself.

There was a chapter that changed my life and my idea on effort. The Chapter "Anatomy of Failure" explained that a person's downfall comes from things not happening the way they want. This was true for me. My life was a long chain of failures and I was miserable from failing. So, the change came with the advice to intend for life to keep on happening the way life keeps on happening--and a healthier way of living to try to change things for the better BUT not to be broken hearted when failure occurs. Hello! I thought I always had to be gung-ho and do or die and I was just killing myself because not everything goes my way. So I was stupid. I guess this is a confession, not a review. However, each chapter is a different subject and an excellent insight into the scope of the Scientology religion. Don't be scar'd! Books don't bite.

For anyone interested in finding out what Scientology is all about, I recommend this book first. It isn't "about" Scientology - rather, it is a little piece of the kinds of things we learn in Scientology.

Composed of essays, it gives a look into how the mind works, what the relationship is between the mind, spirit, and body, a brief look at what our capabilities are as spiritual beings, and some applicable rules about life and livingness. You can study the material, apply it to your own life, and see how it works FOR YOU.

This is a great first book for anyone interested in the subject.

Out of all of L. Ron Hubbard's works, this is the most straight forward and interesting. This book makes it easy to understand Scientology and apply it to your life.

I had been watching Clinton Anderson on RFD TV and decided to read his book. The book was an easy read. I have been able to take the information and use it with my horse. I have read several books including Parelli's Horse-Man-Ship; Leslie Desmond, and Tom Dorrance. Anderson's book is by far the best if you want something that will give you a step by step program for working with your horse. He also includes the reasons for the steps that make the process logical. This is a really great book and addition to your library!

Easy to understand and apply.

I have have been having ground manner problems with my four year old horse. I bought books upon books to help me find ways to gain respect from my horse. I came upon this book and it works wonders! My horse caught on very well with the exercises and they were easy to do. I highly reccomend this book for any horse owner. Not only does it teach your horse to respet you but also teaches him every day task that make handling and riding easier and more enjoyable. I am not complety through the book with my horse but there is already a day and night differance.

I have been riding and training horses for over 40 years. I have read books by all the top modern trainers and many from the past. Clinton Anderson is the best of all the trainers and the best teacher of trainers. Anderson's explanations of training and horsemanship are clear and without the pyscho-babble or mystical feel non-sense that so many trainers pass off as horsemanship. If you're looking to study horsemanship at it's best you cannot do better than Clinton Anderson.

I really enjoyed reading this book. I found it very helpful. I especially liked reading what the two women thought of the exercises and how it worked for them and their horses. My horse has been "experimented" on with some of these exercises and I found it has improved her. She also seemed to enjoy the change of training direction.

very helpful book

i have two horses, and they both have their moments. but after reading this book, and applying what clinton talks about, i have seen a noticable improvement in both of my horses. and the two ladies used in this book were very helpful with the input they had at the end of every excercise. it seems that each of thier horses have some of the same issues that i have with mine. i would definatley reccomend this book to anyone who has horses whether you are experienced or not, i believe everyone could bebefit from clinton's expertise.

I love this book!!! It's great for unsure beginners!! The author really helps you with even the smallest details you need to know. I was so afraid to enter the tri world b/c I thought it was so elite but the author made me realize that ANYONE can do it and so can you!! Buy this book if you are new to triathlons and unsure of yourself. You will feel like a winner even before you race!!

Great book. Couldn't put it down- its not really a training book but a "calm your nerves, here is what it is really like" if you are slow, fat and want to be a triathlete. Of course, it works too if your not a slow fat triathlete as well.

Getting motivated

I enjoyed this book and have already recommended it to my friends. I'll be doing my first triatholon in a few months. It is a very good motivation and introductory book. I'm reading another book for more detailed information into the actual training.

I read this about a month before my very first triathlon. I had just lost about 25 pounds on Weight Watchers and was about as fit as I ever had been. I went from 164 lbs to 139 lbs and needed to add in more exercise to continue losing. I was very nervous about doing a triathlon but it gave me a reason to train (I didn't want to die or better yet, look like and idiot so I had to do SOME training!) This book was hilarious and gave quite a few good tips for newbies. It is a quick read, very witty and fun. It makes you wonder why you would ever want to put yourself through an event such as a tri but justifies your feelings once you are hooked on the sport! Definitely worth the read...I have now completed two triathlons, one duathlon and am now training for a 1/2 marathon!

Just Do It! And this book will give you the courage to Just Do It!

I have just completed my first season of competing in Triathlons. I owe being able to compete in 4 triatlons to this book.

I started training in September a year ago. I was really serious and read the Joe Friel books and Triatlon 101, which are full of great information. However, they all left me feeling like I was crazy and would never be able to do this. Primarily because I was still way over weight and way out of shape and I was afraid to be with all those skinny athletes. Then I read the Slow Fat Triathlete. I was so motivated that when I finished it I was pumped and ready to take on the world.

I'm still heavier than I would like to be, but I'm in the best shape I've been in all my life. I'm over 50 and I'm in better shape than I was when I was in the Marine Corps over 30 years ago (oh and I was skinny then).

I learned a lot from Jayne's book, the biggest thing I learned was don't wait until you loose the weight, start now. I know a lot of people who say I'll start working out when I loose 10 pounds (or 20 or even 5) and it never happens. Heck, I was one of those people. But now my motto and my Tri Buddy's motto is JUST DO IT! She completed one this year and I completed four. We are now training for next year. All I can say is Thanks Jayne you are my hero.
