One of the best self help books for a marriage that has gotten off on the wrong foot, causing unhappiness and misunderstanding. It is truely a "self"-help book, as it asks the reader to examine their own behavior in relation to their spouse, and shows how changing one's own behavior causes positive changes in the spouse's behavior. AND IT WORKS! The book is simple to read without being simplistic, and has easy to follow guidence. It is an excellent resource for a person whose spouse refuses to go to marriage counselling.

I was in a shaky monogamous relationship and was LOST as to if it was I that was responsible for what was going on! I didnt know where to turn,or what to do~ as my friends were telling me EXACTLY what WANTED to hear! NOT what I NEEDED to hear!
This book is like a WORKBOOK in GUIDING YOU to better COMMUNICATION....dealing with dissaprovement....criticism..blaming and self-justifying....and even being right!....being more attentive....double standards and soooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo much more!
IT helped ME tremendously to understand how everything I SAY or DO makes a tremendous difference in either having a GREAT relationship or one that left me feeling lost, alone and FRUSTRATED!!
I HIGHLY RECOMMENED THIS EASY TO READ book!

An absolute gem that saved my relationship!

My feeling is that most "self help" books, in reality, are the authors helping themselves to the reader's money. With that as my overall opinion I decidedly was not excited when my girlfriend insisted I get a copy of "Making it as a Couple." I agreed to read it only to make her happy. However, after reading just the first dozen or so pages, I was really impressed. I stayed up and finished the book in one night.

It is spectacular!

Fay's insights, principals, and ideas are BRILLIANT! The book has no shrink-double talk and no Freudian bull**** or touchy-feelie filler. Instead each and every page has at least one very real, genuinely creative, unique, and practical ideas on what to do when there's problems in a relationship. I can't say Arlene (my girlfriend) and I now live in perfect relationship bliss. BUT this book did help uncover our major problems and (MOST IMPORTANT OF ALL) told us SPECIFICALLY how we could solve them! In fact, things are the best they have ever been with us. The shrink that wrote the book (Fay) helped us more (without ever meeting us) than a local psychiatrist/so-called relationship expert that I paid over $1,000.00 to for nine office visits. The book is an undiscovered gem. If I sound like I'm wild about this book--- that's true. I can't say enough good stuff about it.

With this book and a few hours I think any couple can solve their own problems ...or at least get a good idea if they are solvable. We spent two hours a week AS A COUPLE using the book's relationship tools. The techniques given might at first seem crazy. But upon reflection and use you'll see they work. In fact we have gone months without a fight (in the past ... every week had at least one big blowup). Now we seriously talking about getting married! I can't recommend this book highly enough. I know I sounds like one of those morons on Oprah-Jerry-Ricky ... but the truth is the book really changed my life! I can only say that about one other book (and that's my bankbook).

History will prove this man more foresighted than we know!

Review Date: 1999-11-04
This intelligent and kind man all too often falls through the cracks of history. People forget that there was a completely different school of socialist thought that existed concurrently with the ideas of Marx. Kropotkin, like many others who believed in the ability of people to make their own economic relations, had the distinction of being persecuted by people on both sides of the political spectrum. Yet his book is remarkable for its lack of self-pity or resentment. The book is dense and full of the musings of a highly educated man of the late 19th century who indulged many other interests besides politics. His journey is remarkable, and we can only hope that he will become better known.

Brilliant!

This work by Peter Kropotkin's is, I say this without reservations, a work of genius and an amazing reflection on the life of an amazing man. Kropotkin's stories of his childhood and his relations with his servants and other lower-calss individuals (he was born a prince) are very interesting, as are his tales of exploration. His version of anarcho-socialism is very intriguing, largely because he bears no hate or grudge towards anyone and he is a very gentle man. In his book, it becomes clear (without him saying it, of course) that he did not recognize just how unique of a man he was. This book is filled with marvelous anecdotes, from cutting political commentary to fascinating stories of journeys down the Amur River to a splendid little collection of stupid Russian Spy stories. This book is fantastic.

Review Date: 2002-06-02
Prince Piotr Alekseyevich Kropotkin, 1842-1921, was a Russian geographer and anarchist. He came from a wealthy princely family and as a boy was a page to the czar. Repelled by court life, he obtained permission to serve as an army officer in Siberia, where his explorations and scientific observations established his reputation as a geographer. After returning to European Russia, he became an adherent of the Bakuninist faction of the narodniki and engaged in clandestine propaganda activities until arrested in 1874. Two years later he escaped to Western Europe, where he worked with various anarchist groups until his imprisonment in France (1883). Pardoned in 1886, partly as the result of the popular clamor for his release, he moved to England and spent the next 30 years mainly as a scholar and writer developing a coherent anarchist theory. In his most famous book, Mutual Aid (1902), he attacked T. H. Huxley and the Social Darwinists for their picture of nature and human society as essentially competitive. He insisted that cooperation and mutual aid were the norms in both the natural and social worlds. From this perspective he developed a theory of social organizationin Fields, Factories and Workshops (1898) and elsewherethat was based upon communes of producers linked with each other through common custom and free contract. Returning to Russia following the February Revolution of 1917, he attempted to engender support for a continued Russian effort in World War I and to combat the rising influence of Bolshevism. Following the Bolshevik triumph in the October Revolution (1917), he retired from active politics. Consistently nonviolent in his anarchist beliefs, Kropotkin,as both thinker and man, was admired and acclaimed by many far removed from anarchist circles.

I was surprised by two things with the book. The first was the large number of spy's, or more accurately greedy unscrupulous people with high security jobs, that the book details. The second is just how dumb many of them were. The authors detail out the large number of spy's that have worked against the U.S., primarily during the 1970's and 1980's. The authors also give the reader a nice, but brief history of espionage against the U.S. and details of how many of the organizations that these people were part of. The reader also gets a nice look at the actual techniques that were used to both spy and catch the traitors. Again here I was surprised at just how lax the security procedures were that allowed so much damage. How people could walk out of the CIA and FBI daily with brief cases full of top secret documents is beyond me. Is there not a security guard that could be posted at the door?

I have read about many of the more notable spy's over the past 50 years, but I had not heard of maybe half of the people detailed in the book. You will be surprised at just how many people grab a few secret documents and head off to the local Russian embassy for the dirty version of lets make a deal. The fact that so many of these guys, yes most of them are men, get caught after only receiving a few thousand dollars speaks to the overall intelligence of these James Bond emulators. I mean these guys could have walked around with a blue wind breaker with yellow lettering that said SPY and they would have been less obvious then what many of them did. What concerned me was just how stupid many of the guys were, almost to the point of wondering how they even got their jobs in the first place. The reason this concerned me was if these are the guys getting caught maybe there are multitudes of competent spy's out there that we will never find out about. Also just how bad is our security that these intellectual duds were able to game the system and walk out of the building with the family treasures.

Overall I found the book well written and interesting. The authors were able to keep the pace of the book lively and limit the amount of dull overly detailed descriptions of legal proceedings. I found the book a rather large eye opener and would recommend it to anyone interested in national security or espionage. It also gave me more then one or two laughs at just how hapless these guys were. In some cases it was the key stone cops meet Tom Clancy.

The only real "catalog" of American traitors during Cold War

Roughly 100 American traitors, most of them within the U.S. defense establishment, are itemized in this book, the only such over-all review I have encountered. As I have said on several occasions that I believe we have at least 500-750 additional cases of espionage to discover, at least half of them controlled by our "allies", this book is for me a helpful reminder of the true pervasiveness of betrayal in a Nation where opportunism and financial gain often outweigh loyalty and principle.

Stephen Michael King is an amazing illustrator. I first noticed his work in the outstanding book titled, Where Does Thursday Go?

As a picture book writer, just looking at his illustrations inspires me to write stories. If God blesses me, Stephen Michael King will one day illustrate a story or two of mine. :)
Definitley buy this book, the illustrations alone are worth the price.

This is a very sweet book, with bright, beautiful illustrations. Milli is a talented artist, but is afraid to show her creativity and flair to her rather plain neighbors. When she meets two wandering minstrels, they encourage her to reveal her talents. My 2 year old son enjoys the pictures, and the idea of friends dancing together for the fun of it. A great addition to your child's collection, and a great read at any age. DH

"THOSE WHO DON'T KNOW THE HISTORY ARE DOOMED TO REPEAT IT"!

This book is a must for anyone interested in the history of the Balkans and in the history of Christianity. It holds the key to resolving the current Balkan conflict(s), and avoiding the future ones. State Department should require that all their people understand this book before they attempt to deal with the Balkans. Understanding Mountain Wreath means going beyond the literal meaning of the words, and having somebody with an adequate background to interpret it. Although the book is pretty simple, it is not easily translatable in English language, like other archaic books and scriptures.

This is one of the greatest works of Serbian Literature. The best prouf is that Goethe learned Serbian just to read this book in original Serbian languange. It describes how Monte Negro fought against Turks and how some of them converted to Islam. By this he describes and explains one greater image of all others Serbs who converted to Islam, mainly in Bosnia, and how this problem caused and still causes many problems. He also goes deep into the history to describe Serbian history so a reader can understand the present. This book is also ful of verses which have deep menaing which can be applied on everyday life. The verses dont rhime but they have deep menainig which makes this book great.

This is certanly the best book written by a Montenegrin which gives us so much information about Montenegrin history and Montenegrins. Montenegrins, people from the mountains, with their language, religion and brave hearts were protecting their name, their country MONTENEGRO, from islamic ottoman Turks. Some of the Montenegrins were converted to Islam and this book is writing about them being converted back again to orthodox christianity or being killed if they refused. Very dramatic book which is deep in heart of every MONTENEGRIN.

Note: translation in English in some parts is not very accurate.

As I read this book, I began to understand the simple, incredible words from kids whose parents are in the military.

Each has their own individual portrait of how they feel and how they honor 'their hero' that serves our country. Those bonds of love stretch hundreds of miles. Their limited time spent together is truly embedded to carry them through this most difficult time.

This book profoundly expresses the honor these children feel.

Marcia Bennett's "Mystery at Jacob's Well" is a great read for kids age 8 or up. As a writer and science teacher, I'm always delighted to find a good, wholesome children's book that incorporates an intelligent story line with accurate historical and science fact. This book reminded me of those great Nancy Drew/Trixie Belden books we used to read, but it has considerably more substance for today's more sophisticated youth audience. Although the book draws from local (Texas) folklore, it should be enjoyed by readers from Maine to California. I highly recommend Ms. Bennett's book, and hope that it is the first of a long series.
