There is something magical about this book that stays with you long after you have read it. The photos are exquisitely beautiful and the writing is entertaining and insightful. It is obviously the work of a man who feels passionately about orchids and life generally, and has a great sense of adventure. On reading the book, you begin to believe that you are actually there with him - in Hawaii or Singapore or Western Australia - sharing the wondrous 'orchid' experience. The book is destined to become a modern classic.

A Rare Find

What a find...like a rare orchid itself. The story of a Queensland lad, used to the magic of the tropical rainforest, gradually discovering the delights of orchids. These days Max is a Sydney-sider, but the book follows his journeys throughout the world...as he finds orchids in their natural settings...and the people and the stories around the flowers. Loved his anecodote about how orchids to him, when a teenager, were something you presented to a young woman on a first date....and what they meant to the girl, but more importantly, to her parents.

His photography is remarkable - the repsect and enthusiasm for his subjects is enhanced by his understanding of the importance of natural light...and the time of day when photographs can capture the best of an orchid's magic - ie pretty much invariably about dawn or thereafter. Max's energy in getting up to get the right shot in the right place with the right light is astounding.

Anyway, it is very rare to find a book like this - a love for the natural world focussed on orchids, but with magically written stories leading from the flowers to remarkable people and places. Not only gorgeous pictures...but a most rewarding read.

I can only suggest it would make a tremendous gift - for anyone really - but if you have a flower-lover who is hard to buy for otherwise...this is it.

The photographs in this book are VERY high quality - the best I've seen - and there are lots of them. The colors are bright, brilliant even! Most photos are full page. I bought it to give as a Christmas gift to an orchid-loving friend, but I really want to keep it so I guess I'll have to get a second copy! The book is also well organized. If you love orchids, I'm pretty sure you'll love this book.

Enchanting But True

The book "The Enchanted Orchid" by Max Fulcher and Margaret Kelly have truly lived up to, if not, surpassed my expectations as far as the content is concerned. Photography is at its best notwithstanding the fact that the authors have carefully selected their subjects and successfully incorporated artifacts which effectively introduced the places where the orchids was said to have originated or photographed.

To say the I personally liked the book would be an understatement. I LOVE IT! The combination of humor with real life situations have proven the skill and talent of the authors. Among the chapters that I am amused of is that the one pertaining to the Phalaenopsis orchid wherein true passion for this wonderful flowers can really bring out the best in a person, let's say, a real adrenaline surge!

Once again, my kudos to Max Fulcher and Margaret Kelly for a very wonderful and educational book. I, myself, from the Philippines, where some of the photos were taken, is very grateful to the authors for further enhancing our already colorful culture and showcasing our rich flora to the world. I strongly believe the book will be out-of-stock from our bookstands in no time! Good luck and more power!

A book about orchids? Yes indeed. And about photgraphy, and the people and countries of the Asia/Pacific region. All told with the author's sly humor and grand sense of adventure as he tracks down the most beautiful of the beautiful with his camera, always mindful of respecting the customs of the lands and the people who share their environment with these elegant flowers. A wonderful travelog full of personal stories and anecdotes and a great sense of tolerance and whimsy directed at those of us who have many pre-conceived notions about these "enchanting" plants. A terrific read and beautifully photographed.

There are many lovely needlepoint books with an emphasis on romantic or Victorian designs. This book consists of designs with Asian, African and Latin and Native American influences. The photographs are beautiful, the instructions and charts are clear, and the colors dazzling! Highly recommended for all needleworkers---knitters, cross stitchers, crocheters, etc.---not just needlepointers.

This book brings the beauty of the various international fabrics to your needlepoint canvas. It's not your grandmother's needlepoint - no cats or flowers, just bold and exciting designs with great color graphs and ideas. I highly recommend this book - I even ordered a copy for my sister although it was out-of-print.

Serving with Rick in the military and knowing him and Bea for many years it was a shock to see this man, my best buddy, going through this. Bea dealt with and then wrote about this whole ordeal in a very loving and understanding way that I am not sure I could do. In her book she covers all aspects of losing a loved one and how to be prepared for when the end comes. Her charts and forms simplify what otherwise could be a very confusing and complicated time. Thanks, Bea.

In offering "Farewell, My Friend," Ms. Beatrice Bailey has created a fantastic, self-contained, unique resource for anyone's reading. Having experienced the loss of both my parents, I would say, "Read this book now...before you are faced with the cares and challenges of death and dying!" There's plenty enough humor to balance out the tears on such a serious subject..but it's basically a WORKBOOK. Read it today! Reference it tomorrow!

This book is a must for anyone who has become a caretaker of a loved one. It doesn't just tell you how to think about handling your emotions and feelings about what is going on. It gives very specific instructions on how to handle all of the services and legal paperwork that needs to be done. I most appreciated the humor and personal experience of this woman. She was an angel to her husband in his passing.

This is a wonderful book, full of great practical advice by someone who has been there, conveyed through a wonderfully upbeat approach to the subject. Beatrice shares her emotions openly as she moves through the difficult process of caring for a dying spouse. I've already sent copies to friends in similar circumstances. Her Excel spreadsheets are worth the price of the book all by themselves.

Reading Forgiveness for Forgotten Dreams touched my heart. I had to call friends and read some of them over the phone. The pictures that Mr. LeVine draws with his words are incredible. The love he has of life and those who share it with him is apparent! I will never think of blue socks the same way again! Thank you for sharing your heart. I recommend this book to everyone!!

I couldn't put this book down.
The day I got this collection, I read it through, with some poems read several times and I recall looking at my bedside clock, and it was 1:35 AM.
I could have kept reading...
I suppose what I like most about Mr. LeVine's work is the superb word pictures and how they touch on heart connections made throughout his life. "Seventy-Five Stories Above Ground" describing his connection with his father in dream state, as well as "I still Love November", both brought me to tears.
This is a book that I will read and re-read, share with friends, give as gifts, and generally keep at hand until his next body of work is published.
This poet's work makes me want to write!
I want to share my appreciation and enthusiasm for this offering. It's inspired me to look inward more often.

Although well educated and traveled, to me poetry has always been a mystery, words and emotions of uncertain origin. "Forgiveness for Forgotten Dreams" is quite the opposite. It is poetry for the everyman. Dreams and passions from and for each of our lives. Wayne Levine's prose elevates us all to a place of retrospect and romance that we seldom see.
This book should be read by all whom have dreamt.

Ruiz's book is fantastic; he adheres to to ACTUAL Toltec wisdom, WITHOUT the silly "interpretations" which so many "New Age" charlatans inject when writing about what they label "Toltec" wisdom.
Ruiz superbly explains the Toltec way in an extremely logical, simple, and intelligent way. These writing could be dubbed "Cliff notes for Castanada!" This book is a keeper, something to be read, comprehended, and read again. This is one of the very few books which has the intent AND ability to enable the readers to actualize their potential and transform their lives. This book is truly what the Toltec way is all about! This book is the real thing...
(Beware of the numerous authors who claimed to have "studied" with Ruiz; paying a tuition and studying something doesn't mean you are a successful student!)

Obviously The Four Agreements, written by Don Miguel Ruiz, is a guide to personal freedom. The question, though; how does it work, and what does one get out of it? It's simple, one agrees to them self the four agreements and eventually changes his or her life.

To be honest, the book's not the most exciting read ever, but it is an eye opening mental journey. Imagine having fifty lb ankle weights that are welded on. This guide is a pair of heavy duty metal clippers, slowly cutting away at all the stressful weight.

I, at fourteen years of age, personally recommend The Four Agreements to anyone who wishes to change their life for the better.

This will be a very quick read, but kind of a book that you will want to keep close by as a reference. It has simple four rules on how to live happy and full life: have impeccable words, do not take other people's comments made to you personally, do not assume and do the best that you can. Writer explains breezily these four rules and how they can be applied in one's every day life. One has to remember to be grateful for his life, one has to live in the moment and send his/her intentions to the world (intention being unconditional love). This is a spiritual world but what is amazing is the simplicty of its wisdom and makes so much sense. Book almost hypnotized me with its message and I highly recommend it to anyone to read. It has one of the most beautiful references on life, God, death and faith.

Personal Change that can remove the drama from your life

THE FOUR AGREEMENTS is printed in an easy to read style, but has a powerful message when applied. The foundation of the book is based on Toltec wisdom, and the ancient spiritual knowledge passed down through the cultural "masters" called naguals(shaman). Ruiz underwent an event that changed his life's path from surgeon to nagual. Often times ancient wisdom is not so ancient when it still can be applied to modern living. What the book offers is timeless. It is about grabbing hold of a personal freedom that was always yours and using it to master your life and not allow others to master you. This is solid knowledge that can only add clarity to your everyday living.

If you follow and apply THE FOUR AGREEMENTS,which are "Be Impeccable with Your Word","Don't Take Anything Personally","Don't Make Assumptions", and "Always Do Your Best", you will find a security within yourself that provides you with a better perception of yourself and the world around you. We as people, and as individuals, are "conditioned" by our society. This book will help you to break away from that conditioning and most of the responses and reactions we assume as normal. It gets you to think in a different manner that builds stronger emotional resilience.

Although this book is based on spiritual wisdom,it offers opportunities not only in spiritual growth, but also personal relationships, personal growth, enhanced awareness and perceptions, better decision making, and builds emotional strength. THE FOUR AGREEMENTS easily falls in with those who would simply want to improve their everyday choices or decision making skills as applied to the workforce or business management.

Not quite sure if you are being taking advantage of,being made the victim, making the right choice, over reacting, being to sensitive,or tired of not meeting someone else's expectations, then this book is for you. I have given this book as gifts to several acquaintances over the years who have found themselves in life changing events that had left their emotions in turmoil and essentially could not be relied upon for a good decision. By reading this book and writing THE FOUR AGREEMENTS on a business card placed in their pocket, when a questionable decision or choice had to be made, they went down the list and used it as a guide to measure against to ensure a better choice or decision knowing they could not rely entirely on their own ability to make a sound judgment under the emotional strain they were feeling. Using THE FOUR AGREEMENTS as a personal tool added clarity to a seemingly murky emotional state, something I believe we have all experienced at one time or another.

I have not read any of the other books written by Ruiz, but have glanced through them at bookstores. I only found a personal connection with this publication and can only endorse this writing. This book is a great companion to the book AWARENESS by Anthony deMello and compliment each other well.

This same book was loaned to my husband about a year ago. He was having an issue with another close family member and was almost consumed with guilt over the actions of that family member (actions which he has no control over). He doesn't read much but between the person who loaned the book and myself, we convinced him to read it. It took awhile for him to finish because he was really interested in it and wanted to understand each of the 4 agreements thouroughly. It isn't a particullarly hard read but after each chapter or two, you need to stop and reflect how it relates to your life and how you can incorporate the ideas into your future thinking.

My husband had me order this book so he could have it as his own personal copy and also I ordered another copy for him to give to his sibling.

A Must have book on the peerless Astaire and Rogers!

Review Date: 2008-05-19
This retro-review is for, sadly, the now out of print 1987 paperback edition of "The Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers Book".This is a re-released edition by Obelisk Books in 1987 and pretty much looks like the original hardcover edition printed in 1972 throughout.
I was really shocked to see that this book had gone out of print, for it is THE essential volume for any Fred Astaire fan,and especially those interested in his period with Ginger Rogers.
Like the original hardcover edition this one carries on with the "flip" pictures in the top right and left corners of the book. That is there are a series of incremental pictures that if one flips through at a causal speed, they can see Astaire and Rogers dancing in two different numbers.A nice little touch.
The best thing about this book though is how the author approaches her subject matter. She starts off the book giving us a short but well rounded look at both subjects and careers pre-teaming.Like the rest of the book you know here is a person who knows her subject matter inside and out and never writes DOWN to the reader. She writes more like a friend imparting details and essential background material on a subject you both love.
After the intro(about 18 pages) we come to the heart of the book, the film by film look at the ten benchmark motion pictures made starring Astaire and Rogers.
Each chapter is divided into four areas.First are the detailed production and acting credits.Second comes "The Film",thirdly "The Numbers" and lastly "Production".This is repeated for each chapter/film throughout the book and the details and knowledge she imparts are invaluable to any serious student of this dancing duo.Her prose are definitely not dry by any stretch and she keeps you riveted to the page throughout.
Here is an example from her chapter on "Roberta",where she is talking about one of the big numbers from the film,"Hard to Handle":
"The context for the number is an informal session on the dance floor of the Cafe' Russe, the audience for it consists of bartenders and cleaning women, and the beauty of it is that it really seems to be happening for the first time-it's like a moment of cinema verite' bursting through the surface of a polished commercial film.
We've all seen numbers in musicals that start in this supercasual way- and the "impromptu" walked-right-into number became a staple of the Astaire-Rogers repertory-but how many times,no matter how good the routine or how sophisticated our response,it happens that we feel a little stab in our childish hearts-"Oh,they've rehearsed".Sanity tells us that Astaire and Rogers have rehearsed;publicity statistics tell us how many back-breaking hours. But the difference between them and other performers is that, watching them,we aren't in possession of our sanity,we're happy children again, the story the numbers tell us is true. And the illusion of spontanteity makes the plot implication of the number credible;it cements the relationship of the screen characters they portray."
This is a typical sampling of Croces' prose and delivery but as you can see she talks with a deep and sure understanding of her subjects and imparts it to us in that wonderfully direct but non-condescending manner. Her understanding and feelings match very much our own which she translates beautifully to the page.No other book I have read on Astaire(and I have read ALOT!) matches Croce's style and understanding, attention to detail and all put in context to the times and the behind-the-scenes production details so essential in giving its' readers the fullest understanding possible of what went into creating the finished products.
This edition is about 191 pages long in total and has a plethora of pics to enhance your reading pleasure. The last approximately 10 pages are devoted to miscellaneous pics from the films and a full spread of director Mark Sandrichs' production notes from "Follow the Fleet".
For those interested in Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers in an either casual fashion or from a more learned point of view, there isn't a volume before or since that will educate but entertain you at the same time, like "The Fred Astaire & Ginger Rogers Book".
An essential must-have volume on this peerless pair!

Excellent Insights into the Dances

Croce's book focuses upon the dances within each film. Her understanding of the wide range of the Astaire-Rogers filmed dance legacy, and her knowledge of what it took to achieve such excellence in performance...make this book one of the two or three main literary sources on the great dance pair. Astaire-Pan-Rogers, and Born were the team that created a choreographic wellspring, over 10 films, of highly elegant, energetic, and graceful dancing. The likes of this pair, made in heaven, is not likely to be seen soon again. They were the best, the top of the top...and they knew it. Arlene Croce succeeds in this insightful and informational book in explaining why, through dance, and personality, and professionalism, Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers continue to appeal to such a universal audience.

After a long sabbatical from gaming, I'd decided to run an AD&D module. My brother was a veteran of gaming, but my wife and daughter were newbies.

Making a terrible mistake, I started with "The Ruins of Andril," an old Dragon magazine centerfold module. It was too high-level, and pretty dull, actually. We never finished it.

Vowing to not repeat that mistake, I went through my classic AD&D module collection. As soon as I set my eyes on C2 - "The Ghost Tower of Inverness," I knew it to be a perfect introductory module. I eventually want to start them on a campaign, but this tournament module was a great warm-up.

First of all, the pre-rolled characters are nicely done: All humans, one of each of the major character classes. The adventure starts out as a standard dungeon crawl, but with just as many tricks as monsters. Players, even novices, will always surprise you. Their solution to the giant rolling ball was novel. The chess room really had them stumped; because of the multi-colored tiles, they never figured out the proper moves. My brother was thinking it was some mathematical formula...nobody could understand why the rules were different for each character.

As they entered the upper (transdimensional) levels, the dangers increased. The Fire Giant was perhaps their greatest foe. Being an intelligent monster, he targeted the magic-user, with devastating effect.

In fact, though, their only death happened at the very end, in recovering the Soul Gem.

Outstanding module! Fun to play and ref. It took the players three sessions to finish, and now they want more.

The designer of this old module was Allen Hammack, who tends to do the best thinking modules. He also helped with the old A3 slavers module. The other guy who is good is Lawrence Schick who did A4 Slavers (the best module I ever ran that was fun) and the original White Plume Mountain.

Although short in comparison to later editions, it's packed with 3 to 6 original thinking challenges for players. Monsters are set up to fight intelligently rather than sit around like fools in most of the modules.

Highly recommend.

The second best and most ingenious puzzle-solving adventure of all time (IMHO, I'd place White Plume Mountain first, and Tomb of Horrors third). In the realm of Greyhawk, Lord Justinian, Duke of Urnst, has finally located the legendary Soul Gem, the devourer... it once was held in the indomitable Tower of Inverness, a lost ruin on the Woolly Bay. Centuries ago, the terrified masses pulled it into rubble, but its accursed apparition can still be seen haunting the skies! And now, in the name of honor and filthy lucre, your VERY challenged PCs will find: upside down dungeons, horrors of air, earth, fire, and water, a cruelly fatal "chess trap" chamber, a petrifyingly beautiful maiden, reverse gravity, and an intelligent gem that literally sucks the life out of anyone who cannot solve its conundrum. (Don't worry - you'll get your soul back if it doesn't kill all your friends :) Hardcore adventure!

Unlike many such books, this one is excellent and serious. Follow Dr. Vad's strictures and you may yet live to shoot your age!

I wish I'd read this book 45 years ago, when I started playing golf. If you're a serious golfer -- one who wants to play your best, and works toward that goal -- you have a choice: get into a good flexibility and strengthening program, or be prepared to spend some really painful time in bed, not playing golf in beautiful weather.
This book provides what you need to lower the likelihood of encountering the pain and misery of golf-related back problems. There are no guarantees in life, but it has transformed golf for this 67-year old.

It was a very easy read. Very little golf stuff but lots of easy exercises to do and could be done in under 20 minutes for better fitness. It has three levels of difficulties. Yes, to golf better, improve on strength and flexibility as the explosive force in a golf swing could result in injury if we are not properly conditioned, especially weekend warriors.

Its a good book with cute illustrations, but I think some of the concepts could have been expanded upon just a bit more. But, at least its a start and will bring about questions and conversations between you and your child.

Joey Allen has done a great service for parents. These books present basic Christian teachings in a format that is educationally appropriate and child focused. My oldest son (5) and daughter (3) have both enjoyed these books. As a parent I have learned to better communicate my faith for little thinkers.

Every parent or grandparent needs these books!

You will be hard pressed to find any books that correctly state these essential doctrines in a way that is simple and clear for children to understand. The storyline is great and the pictures are captivating!

These books are great! The illustrations are amazing and the characters will capture your heart while teaching children the truths about God. They make a perfect gift for any child or a unique baby shower gift for those who are expecting. Joey has not only presented the truth of God in easy to understand books, but his illustrations really come to life. I love them all!

Be sure to read the Forward and Afterward to Parents in this book. It is a great message to adults as well!

A classical of marxian economic thought

This book is a sketch of what would become, a couple of years later, the author's masterpiece: Das Kapital. It was written in an intense effort during revolutionary agitations in Europe, such hard work had as goal to show the inherent contradictions of capitalism and the way it would soon collapse. Well, capitalism did not collapse then and did not so far, but this book remains a classic in the critique of classical political economy. It is indded shorter than Das Kapital, and in parts not as mature as, but it has the advantage of providing discussion on themes not discussed elsewhere in marxian works. Thus, the most famous part of Grundrisse are its Introduction and the part on "Pre-capitalistic modes of production". A must for anyone who wish to get acquainted with marxian thought.

Critical Reading

Unlike many other works, the Grundrisse exposes in more obvious ways Marx's dialectical thought. The Introduction should really be read as a great antidote to the 1859 Preface to a Critique of Political Economy, which gave us the base-superstructure analogy. The weakest link in Marx's though may very well be found there. The Grundrisse Introduction starts from the point of view of class struggle, whereas there is no place for the class struggle as the driving force in the base-superstructure schema.

Also, Grundrisse starts in a different place from Capital. There is a reason for this, and a good discussion of this can be found in the writing of Raya Dunayevskaya and a counter discussion can be found in Roman Rosdolsky. The choice to eventually shelve the organization of the Grundrisse for the organization of Capital flows in part from the changes in the intervening years, most notably the U.S. Civil War.

Real life constantly shaped Marx's thinking, hardly fitting the representation we commonly get of him from ideologues and capital's priests (economists). As a result, Grundrisse also has serious limitations in its understanding of the logic of capital. Basing the entire understanding of Marxism and capital on Grundrisse leads to the kind of mistakes made by Italian Autononmist Marxism, esp. Antonio Negri, who find themselves engaged in a very subjectivist understanding of capitalism. A useful, but sympathetic, antidote can be found in Werner Bonefeld and John Holloway's writings.

This economic political classic sets the stage for Marx' masterpiece ,'Das Kapital'.It presents the Marxist view of economic labor theory and other radical issues concerning the public socialization of capitalistic economies. After reading this interesting monetary classic,I felt as if socialism can only compliment capitalism and never completely replace it.There needs to be a constant flux of balance between the two systems.During the days of the Industrial Revolution, the shift and focus was on absolute capitalism, unrestrained by indifferent royalists. After the the Russian Revoltion, the emphasis was on a centrical labor socialist oligarchy, with no blue-blood royalist tax restrictions.Under the reforms of Boris Yeltsin ,Russia moved to a more capitalist system ,in which some business gamblers lost everything.Putin has moved Russia back to a more centralised economy and perhaps refining the previous economic blunders of the Soviet Era.This book will help nuture a budding economics thinker by offering more philosophical avenues of free-thought and political choice.

A collection of seven notebooks on capital and money, drafted during the winter of 1857-8, exploring the themes and theses that dominate his later writings, including Marx's own version of Hegel's dialectics, and thoughts on alientation. While not as sophisticatedp--or lengthy--as Das Kapital, it remains a "must read" for anyone interested developing a sophisticated understanding of Marxist philosophy.

The Rosetta Stone

The Grundrisse is perhaps one of the most important additions to Marxian scholarship in the last fifty years and stands as a true Rosetta Stone for deciphering Marx(ist, ian, oid) thought. Foundations of the Critique of Political Economy stands as a bridge between the early humanist writing such as the Manifesto and the later scientific Marx as seen in the three volumes of Capital. In this text we see the very beginnings of the scientific critique as well as a brilliant display of Marx as the dialectician that forces the astute and serious reader to rethink the engagement between Marx and Hegelian thought. This work has seriously challenged what I thought I knew about Marx and has sent me into a deep reflection on Hegel. This work is a must read for those serious about engaging critically the works of a Karl Marx.
