A thoroughly charming, engrossing read of old San Francisco

Harriet Levy was born in San Francisco in 1867 and lived at 920 O'Farrell Street until about 1904. Readers who are familiar with the sights and sounds of San Francisco will be equally pleased with the unfamiliar: "Near the corner of Polk Street stood the cow barn of old man Waller, to which the anemic children of the neighborhood, glass in hand, hurried in the early morning hours to receive warm milk fresh from the cow." About one-third of the chapters are named for rooms of her house. The rooms are described in great detail only to flow into some memory of an event that occurred there. For instance, before reminiscing about her sister Addie's beautiful singing voice and the songs she sang, Levy describes the room itself: "...the ceiling of the music room a lattice of bamboo intertwined with garlands of tea roses and autumn leaves, and burnished birds of copper and blue winging their flight..." Levy's vivid descriptions put you right there. Familiar names also pop up, like Alice Toklas who was a friend and neighbor. This book is a treasure.

This is a great book for children and adults! The directions are clear with good illustrantions and photos to show the exact steps for creating different types of bracelets. The loom that comes in the kit is a good quality loom, the kit comes with everything needed to get started. Beading on a loom is so addictive you will want to buy beads in every color imaginable so you can create bracelets with your own designs. I say this is another great book by Klutz. I have many different books and kits by this company and they make crafts easy and fun to do. I will be ordering more products from Klutz!

An excellent read from start to finish. This moving story of First World War poet Isaac Rosenberg brings to life the appalling conditions of trench warfare.Akers achieves this through the use of scintillating dialogue, showing us how the poetic mind struggles to survive in such a hostile environment.
Equally fascinating is the skillfull depiction of life as the son of poor Jewish immigrants in London, and the underlying awkwardness of the poet socially.A great read.

If you are thinking of a gift for someone that happens to be an Alumnus of Appalachian State, this is it! A great look into the past. Lots of pictures, lots of information. It offers up some geneology information, but not focused on it at all, a great read. No color pictures, what a drag.

History facts, fiction or ghosts?

I really enjoyed reading this book with its mix of ghosts, history, remembrances, soldiers, murders, Indian battles, and Civil War in the area.
Kids and adults alike will enjoy reading and learning about Abingdon and Washington County's past, but in an entertaining, painless fashion. Even if you don't believe in ghosts, you'll find some interesting facts from the past.

Kudos to Donna, from an Abingdon High School friend!

Lucius Burch was one of Memphis's finest lawyers. His collected memoirs, letters, speeches, and essays are beautifully written, and have profound things to say about conservation, what it means to be a liberal, defending Martin Luther King, bounty hunting in Alaska, salvaging a Spanish galleon, and on and on. He lived a wonderfully varied life exactly as he pleased, and, after reading his work, you will wish he had been your friend.

Short Stories from the Arabian Gulf

Review Date: 2008-01-07
Oranges in the Sun is the third volume complied, edited and translated by Akers and Bagadar. I have read their earlier collections, They Die Strangers (2002) and Voices of Change (1998), and eagerly looked forward to this new volume. Here they have painstakingly amassed a representative sample of the short story genre from the entire Gulf region that capture the unique perspectives of the authors of the stories. Written by male and female authors, both established and newly emerging, the stories deal with a variety of themes ranging from the first Gulf War, class conflict, modernity, nostalgia for past ways of life, social injustice, the Iraq war, terrorism, among others. Given the extreme difficulties in handling materials with considerable creative and stylistic diversity encompassed by the stories in this anthology, Akers and Bagadar have done a laudable job of translating, editing, and presenting the materials in a format suitable for the English speaking audiences. This is an outstanding collection and an important literary contribution that provides the non-Arabic speaker with a representative range of stories that capture the essence of the short story genera in the Gulf. As such, this book will be of considerable use both to academic and non-academic audiences interested in the literature of the Gulf region.

fascinating look at Phoenix metro area past and present
Helpful Votes: 7 out of 7 total.
Review Date: 2005-12-26
Paul Scharbach (photographer) and John Akers (curator of history at the Tempe Historical Museum) have put together a remarkable collection of photographs of Phoenix "then" (late 19th, early 20th century) and "now" (the photos appear to all be 2004 or 2005). The "now" photographs are usually from approximately the same direction. The bulk of the collection is of downtown Phoenix, including key historical buildings and landmarks--the County Courthouse, state capital building, Carnegie Library, Luhr's building, Orpheum Theatre, Rosson House, Monroe School, etc. The book continues with Phoenix farther north (Central Avenue Dairy/Park Central Mall, Brophy College Preparatory, the Phoenix Indian School, Wrigley Mansion, Arizona Biltmore), goes (named for Gen. Winfield Scott, an early resident), and downtown Mesa.

The book was quite a pleasure to read and look at, filled with great photos and interesting little tidbits, such as Glendale's founding as a temperance colony, the wide influence of Dwight B. Heard, and the longevity of some local businesses (such as Sine Hardware in Glendale).

One minor error: the book attributes the 1992 purchase and current ownership of Wrigley Mansion to George A. Hormel (died 1946) rather than his descendant Geordie Hormel (a professional musician who has also funded UFO investigation).
