The Bible's justification for Hell and rebrobate Man

Review Date: 2007-01-11
Anyone with a truely reformed theology and biblical worldview will be pleased to read Dr. Adam's clear and concise biblical exposition of the reason why some men are saved and others are not. Indeed, the answer was provided to us some 2,000 years ago in the NT Book of Romans chapter 9. Humanists, universalists and theological liberals will be horrified with what the Bible actually teaches on this subject. For professing Christians who are 'free-willers' and disagree with God's absolute sovereignty over ALL things; please cite an existing cogent refutation of Romans 9.

Systematic Argument

Review Date: 2004-02-17
This book is a response to the "problem of evil" from the perspective of reformed theology. Briefly stated, the problem involves logically reconciling three premises: 1) God is completely good, 2) God is completely in control, and 3) Evil exists in the world. Dr. Adams argues that there is actually no problem in reconciling these and steps through his argument centering on God's "Grand Demonstration" of Himself. Essentially, evil is required so God can demonstrate His full character, including His justice and mercy. Through the argument, Dr. Adams touches on related doctrines such as God's sovereignty, election, and free will.

The book does not make a detailed, vigorous defense of the doctrines it assumes, such as election (and that is not its purpose), thus I would guess that those not convinced of reformed theology will not be convinced by the argument in this book (and the author says as much).

I have heard the basics of this argument before but here found it systematically presented. The book is fairly easy to read and follow. It is a rather fast read and is written on a level for the layman (like me). Whether you agree with reformed theology or not, I highly recommend this book as a strong argument that does away with the "problem of evil." I believe the format of the book lends itself most to personal, not group study.

Short story collection of life in Rochester, NY in 1800s
Helpful Votes: 14 out of 14 total.
Review Date: 1998-09-25
Samuel Hopkins Adams, the author, grew up in Rochester, NY, where he was privileged to know both his grandfathers. His grandfathers Adams and Hopkins lived in the 19th Ward of Rochester during the early 1800s. They both shared stories of life in that period and what it was like to work on building "Clinton's ditch," more commonly known as the Erie Canal. This is a wonderful collection of short stories, written in a warm style, using intriguing words and expressions that arouse one's curiosity &, more often than not, had me scurrying to the dictionary for clarification as to meaning. The stories themselves are easily accessible and convey a wonderful sense of place and ambiance behind the stories.

These are great stories to read aloud to 10- and 11-year-old children or even to read, curled up in bed, after a stressful day. Just the antidote the doctor ordered!

I could hardly improve on the other review. Mr. Adams is incredibly skillful with the written word. My appreciation of American history, New York history, and the Erie Canal were all improved by these stories....enjoyably. This book has my unqualified recommendation, for ANYONE, but most of all for modern kids, who need the historical perspective these stories provide.

My father passed away a year ago. After reading "Great Dads" I decided to get a copy of the book for my Mother and for each of my brothers and sisters. I never knew how much my Dad had in common with the Dads of Jay Leno, Cokie Roberts, and Mike Ditka. These famous people may seem very distant from all of us, but I'm sure any reader will feel as I did when I read the book: "these tales are descriptions of my Dad."

Reading "Great Dads" is a must for any son or daughter. It's sure to provoke tears and laughs as the reader reflects on all that we have learned from our "great dads."

I was born and raised in Abington, PA, I found this book in the local library and have since purchased it. Using actual reports from newpapers along with their rather gruesome sketches, the book is a tomb of true horror stories. For someone interested in the expansive railraod history which resides in southeastern Pennsylavina this book gives the other side of the story. One final comment, to anyone whom is willing, the sites listed in the stories are not hard to find, and are indeed frightening to image what occured so many years ago.

Very well done. A pefect "coffee table" book. I am extremely proud of John & Marjorie Hummel (my parents), Mike Adams, & Bradley Isle for their work they did on this book. Finnally part of their extensive collection of postcards is now avaliable to be shared with everyone. Although, I may be bias through my relationship with 2 of the authors, - This book has been received with enthusiasm by everyone I have shown and they purchased a copy. This is a must have book.

Take your time to enjoy this book. Then, take your time to enjoy it again and again! Thank you to the editors for taking the time to write this book and publish it.

The subtitle for this book is : "How to Practice Free Enterprise In an Unfree Economy". Americans are living an Orwellian double-think dream while ignoring the government-generated corporate statist economy at odds with the principles of free enterprise they are taught to cherish. The IRS continues its Gestapo-like trampling of the Bill of Rights while stealing money, engineering social policy, and maintaining surveillance on American tax victims. Millions of Americans are feeling the squeeze, most just 3 paychecks away from bankruptcy. Some are fighting back, not only by joining tax repeal groups and protesting the unconstitutional theft of their money, but through civil disobedience by simply not reporting income or falsifying their tax returns. These people are what Adam Cash terms "Guerilla Capitalists". A Guerilla Capitalist is anyone practicing free enterprise in our anti-capitalist corporate statist economy in America today. Adam Cash does not dwell on the fact that corporations are creations of the state, and as such, would never exist in a free market. He leaves that to Paul H. Weaver in his "The Suicidal Corporation"(1988). Rather, Adam Cash covers in vast detail all the ins and outs of making money in the free market, which is the underground market or black market. He also aims to teach the reader how not to get caught practicing free enterprise in our unfree society. As the publisher Michael Hoy says "What good is 'believing in' free enterprise if you don't practice it?" ...

Guilty Without A Doubt moves with such excitement and suspense that I couldn't put it down. I found the story to be so intriguing that I actually read it in two sittings. I found myself wanting to race to the end, yet I tried to pace myself because I did not want the story to be over. I'm hoping there will be a sequel. Guilty Without A Doubt is comparable to Danielle Steel who is my favorite author.

A comprehensive, balanced view of Caillebotte's work.
Helpful Votes: 37 out of 38 total.
Review Date: 1999-09-27
Kirk Varnedoe gives us, in Gustave Caillebotte, not only a beautifully reproduced compendium of the artist's major works, but an unusually insightful commentary on his place in the Impressionist movement. Perhaps most importantly, he offers a vision of Caillebotte that allows us to see him as more than a "minor" impressionist, but as an original precursor of modernism who remained true to his own unique vision despite the influences of his better known contemporaries. The importance of late nineteenth century photography, and especially the new, shorter 28 mm. lenses of the period, on Caillebotte's treatment of perspective are analyzed in detail through careful consideration of the preliminary studies for "Rainy Afternoon in Paris" and "Pont de l'Europe". While the author is forthright in his views of the "unevenness" of Caillebotte's oeuvre, he makes a strong case for viewing what Varnedoe refers to as Caillebotte's "internal personal dynamic" as a driving force behind the artist's shifting styles and artistic innovations. The illustrations faithfully reproduce the palette and nuances of Caillebotte's work, still evolving at his untimely death at age 45. An important appendix catalogues the gift of Caillebotte's extraordinary personal collection of impressionist paintings to the French state. These works by Monet, Renoir, Cezanne, Pisarro and others are part of the core collection of the Musee d'Orsay, reminding us again of Caillebotte's role as not only a contributor to the impressionist movement, but as a supporter and champion of its promulgation.
