GREAT BOOK!Review Date: 2005-01-28
HIGHLY RECOMMEND!!Review Date: 2007-04-07
It's a must have for any mom who plans or is breastfeeding her children. It's comforting too as you find out that you're no the only experiencing things and the book explains why it's happening. I've already loaned out my copy to a friend and will start giving this out to any friends at baby showers. It's just that good!

The most useful pocket-sized guide I've foundReview Date: 2002-01-24
In general, I've found the book extremely helpful, but it has a couple of flaws: (1) Foods are grouped into sections according to type (e.g., Dairy or Vegetables), and then into various sub-classifications within each section. Sometimes it's hard to figure out where to find a particular item (the Soups, Stews, etc. section is especially confusing). (2) The cross-references aren't always helpful. I looked up "focaccia" under Breads, and was told "See Pizza," but under Pizza they just list "Italian bread type," not the bread by itself (which is more often used for sandwiches than pizza). It would have taken no more space to give the calorie count than it did to give that worthless cross-reference! (3) There is NO INDEX, which would have solved Problem #1. Still, in general this is a great little guide, and I hope the author continues to improve it in future editions.

The Everything Christmas BookReview Date: 2001-01-23
They begin with the history of Christmas and how it "evolved over many centuries, enduring occasional tribulation, scrutiny, and abolishment along the way." Folklore, such as why red and green are Christmas colors, complements the historical facts. They also explain how decorated trees and Santa Claus became a part of contemporary Christmas celebrations.
The chapters on stories and poems include such well-known tales as Dickens' "A Christmas Carol" and Moore's "'Twas the Night Before Christmas," in addition to other favorites. Music and complete lyrics are provided for forty Christmas carols. The list of Christmas videos contains more than fifty titles.
Do you know in what year "A Charlie Brown Christmas" was first broadcast or when "Miracle on 34th Street" was first released in movie theaters? These are two of the 106 questions included in "The Ultimate Mass-Media Christmas Trivia Quiz." (Answers are at the end of the chapter!)
If you're up to a little traveling, check out the section on local festivities. Tree-lighting ceremonies, parades, Yule log celebrations, feasts, and lighting festivals are available all across the States. The editors provide times and contact information for each event listed.
No Christmas is complete without lots of good food, and the editors have selected a tantalizing sample of holiday recipes, including wassail and "Special Green and Red Vegetable Salad." Recipes are divided into sections for breakfasts and brunches, appetizers, side dishes, main courses and accompaniments, sweets and desserts, and drinks.
The next chapter offers recipes for gift-giving. And yes, it does include fruitcakes!
The editors conclude with a section on how Christmas is celebrated in other parts of the world and a discussion of Hanukkah and Kwanzaa.
The Everything Christmas Book is an ideal gift for people of all ages and interests. Be sure to get a copy for yourself also--it will soon become a treasured favorite.

Excellent beginner bookReview Date: 2001-08-01
This book also provides page-sized copies of popular charts such as Family Group Records and Pedigree charts that can be easily photocopied and used. (My edition included a 16" x 18" tear-out family tree.)
Unlike many genealogy books, there is some excellent coverage on how to record family histories and write family biographies. Hartley explains how to publish your work and advises that "Most families who publish a book of genealogy print less than 50 copies."
He also describes the types of materials that you will need (sheet protectors, ink, etc.) to ensure that your records are properly preserved. There is also a section on how to organize activities for family reunions--one of those great venues for gathering genealogical details.
The well-organized and easy-to-read format makes it an excellent book choice for younger genealogists too.

Professor Hartley has provided an easy to read yet detailed solution for beginning and conducting a family search.

Honest and engaging journalismReview Date: 2006-03-31
The previous reviewer's comments are both fascinating and somewhat surprising. The reviewer, Christopher Hodapp, just "happens" to be the author of a competing title, "Freemasons for Dummies." A high level Freemason himself, the reviewer is rather insistent that interested readers stick to books written only by Freemasons. Much of the current crop of Freemason literature is written by active Masons who are overtly protective of the fraternity and tend to gloss over the tougher issues in its history. The authors of "Everything Freemasons" do not make the same mistake. While Karg and Young cast Freemasonry in an accurate and positive light, they aren't afraid to discuss the controversies of Masonic history, and they do so with engaging style.
The section on the "Lucifer" controversy is remarkable. Virtually every other publication that touches on this subject gets it wrong, rehashing inaccurate information as fact. The authors obviously performed serious research, and lay this discussion out more clearly and accurately than anything I've read. This element alone is more than worth the price of the book. The entire book shows the same dedication to research, accuracy, and authenticity.
For a subject that has been an important part of my life, I don't want to be coddled with the slanted fluff of too many current publications. "Everything Freemasons" offers highly accessible and entertaining reading along with solid, unbiased professional journalism.
