Having read excerpts of "Shooting Jelly With A Shotgun" online, I was looking forward to some more of Adam Maxwells highly original short stories and I was not disappointed.

Quite where he gets his inspiration is likely to forever remain a mystery, but this is the most imaginative blast of dark humour to appear this year.

Standouts are the truly bizarre "Jim Morrison's Leg" and the delightfully inventive "The Holy Face Of Gary Barlow" but there is not a weak story in the entire collection.

Highly recommended and I hope Adams next collection will not be too long in coming.

Neo-Noirist Puts Mystery in the Palm of Your Hand

Adam Maxwell is a master wordsmith, but not the kind you're used to. He knows how to say what needs to be said using carefully crafted diction and witty, purposeful language. In this age of daunting 1000-page Pulitzer winners and laboriously dense texts from faux-academics (see also: elitists), Maxwell's collection is a shotgun blast of fresh air. These short (and sometimes short-short) stories are gems of neo-noir style balanced perfectly with classic humor conventions and contemporary storytelling. A real summer treat, and can be read -- like any great story collection -- over and again. High recommended from this reviewer. It may be flash fiction, but the joy in reading Maxwell will surely resonate long after the pages are turned. [...]

The information in this book is accurate, interesting and very readable. The ilustrations are superb.
An invaluable resource for anyone studying diamonds but also written in such a way that it is of general interest.
This book has proved very popular here in Sydney - I have already ordered 11 copies for myself and my gemmologist friends.

I believe that this is the most comprehensive general textbook on diamonds out there. It covers EVERYTHING: natural history, the diamond industry, diamond-cutting, gemology, jewelry, mythology and symbolism, chemistry and physics, natural formation and man-made synthesis... The original research is very impressive (it was commissioned by the French Natural History Museum to when they did their blockbuster exhibition on diamonds a couple of years ago). Among other things, it convincingly rebuts the theory that diamond-cutting was invented in India and presents a considerable amount of information on famous diamonds from archive sources. The illustrations are also impressive, including archive photos from De Beers that were developed and printed for the first time in over a century.

I bought this book and read it in 1 night and absolutely loved it. I have 50 pounds to lose and bought this book with the hope that it would be a great reference book to inspire me throughout the dieting process. I plan on keeping it with me all through the process and refer to it when I need to laugh or need that extra bit of inspiration as this book has both.

Very funny approach to dieting

I laughed out loud reading this book. Joanne Kimes tells funny stories that we can all relate to while actually giving us information. It makes dealing with the stressful world of dieting a bit easier. I have already given a copy of this book to a friend who is also miserable on her diet... at least this will make her laugh.

DAILY DOSE OF DILBERT

Since Bill Watterson retired from doing Calvin & Hobbes several years ago, Dibert has been the most consistently funny comic strip going today and one of the very few I read with regularity. Anyone who's ever worked in an office can certainly appreciate Scott Adams' wry sense of humor for all things that happen in the office environment. The calendar is a nice way to give someone a daily dose of Dilbert as well as giving them something practical they can use in their day-today work activities.

It's hard to buy a gift for someone you know likes Dilbert but probably has most of the books already. You can go for other business humor books, but apart from Augustus Gump's Management Secrets of T. John Dick, there's not much out there - and my boss already has that too. If you believe a daily dose of Dilbert is as important as that morning coffee, this calendar's a good solution. Just about every one of them at least makes you smile, even if you've seen them before. You also have the satisfaction of watching your boss laugh at the Pointy Haired Boss without spotting the similarities with his own behavior. Yikes, if he reads this, I'm sunk!

Very informative book that I'm giving to my grandson for his 10th birthday. It is chock full of pictures and the sequence of events is well done. My grandson is a WWII buff so he'll be delighted with this book.

Another good book in the Eyewitness Series. This book does a good job of condensing the vast amount of information available on WWII and, as usual, the pictures tell the story in an interesting way for children. We collect Eyewitness Books and my kids were so glad to see this book and the others on WWI, the Civil War and the American Revolution.

I won this book at my school's book fair. I read it and I loved it! I can't seem to believe why Plum (Dog's new owner) just call him "Dog". Sure, she says it's "simple and original" but no one calls their dog Dog. Shouldn't she think of something else besides that?

Dog

Review Date: 2005-10-31
Dog is a great book. It starts of weird, but it ends up very good. When you look at it the book or read the back of the book, it looks easy, and not great, but never judge a book by its cover or the size. It's about a dog that drowned when it was young because it was ugly, but was revived when it was left at a trash dump. It grew up in a trash dump with a bunch of other dogs. A female dog that died because of an accident with a refrigerator taught it. When she died the dog went on a journey to the city to find a mistress. He found a mistress when a little girl bought him from a dog pound.
After the little girl bought the dog she lost interest in the dog because of her schoolwork. When it was the little girls birthday she named the dog Dog which is the name of the book. She named it Dog because it's simple and unique. She lost interest in Dog again after a couple of days. Dog decided to run away. Dog ran in to a dog that looked like a hyena, and which is named Hyena. Hyena introduced Dog to a man who looked like a wild boar, and which is named Wild Boar. Both of them took care of Dog until he decided to go back with the mistress and the little girl.

Dog and the little girl and her parents went on a vacation to the west, and the parents planned to have the Dog kidnapped by some truckers. When Dog was kidnapped he was thrown into the countryside by the trucker that kidnapped him because Dog peed on the truckers shirt. Dog found his way back into the city after eleven days of straight walking. After Dog was rested up he made up in his mind that he was going to get revenge with the family, so Dog met with his old friends Hyena and Wild Boar and all the cats and dogs in the city. Dog told his plan to all the dogs and cats in the city, and all the cats and all the dogs thought it was a good idea to break into the parents and little girls house and.................
I enjoyed this book and loved reading the book Dog because it was filled with a lot of excitment. I would recommend this book to anyone who can understand and read.

Trevor Scott's international intrigue catalogue continues to expand with his third international espionage thriller, The Dolomite Solution. Mr. Scott is a former weapons expert with the Navy; a former captain in the Air Force; holds a masters degree in creative writing from Northern Michigan University; and now resides in Oregon and Michigan. He continues to travel extensively in Europe.

The Dolomite Solution is set in northern Italy; Innsbruck Austria; and Narragansett Bay in Rhode Island. Two scientists have combined research to find a cure for heart disease. They are set to turn their findings over to an Austrian biotechnology company and are a shoe-in for the Nobel prize when one of them is killed on a mountain road. Jake Adams, former Network agent, has just moved to Innsbruck for a break from his exploits when he receives a strange phone call which propels him into the most convoluted web of murder; betrayal, and industrial espionage he has yet encountered:

"Quinn laughed to himself, gazing through the night vision goggles at the dumpster that Adams had just scurried behind like a frightened rat. His shots had gone way over the man's head, but then Jake had no way of knowing that. It was perfect. When he first heard that the man who had ruined his life would be in the same city as him, he couldn't believe his good fortune. When he had actually seen the man, he knew his luck was changing for the better. He had thought long and hard in prison, projecting a scenario for this very meeting. The city didn't matter. Circumstances like this couldn't be ignored. He had Adams just where he wanted him."

Trevor Scott delivers with The Dolomite Solution. Jake Adams is up against a bitter enemy, and with his usual aplomb Scott ratchets up the action. He is an expert at thoroughly deceiving the reader, drawing us into a seemingly insolvable plot just as he fascinates us with action that is non-stop. Jake is his usual disarming self, understated in a thoroughly fascinating way until his enemies inflate with their own devious cunning. We can't wait for him to succeed, and we can't help but be relieved when he finds his true lady love in the end...a wonderful read.

I saw this book mentioned in Publishers Weekly. They said that former CIA agent Jake Adams was back for more male action-adventure in his third international mystery thriller, THE DOLOMITE SOLUTION by Trevor Scott. "Previous titles have fit the Tom Clancy techno mold, but this topical tale of DNA research and a possible cure for heart disease falls more in the James Bond tradition of fancy cars and fast women."--Publishers Weekly. When I read that, I bought a copy online. They're right. This thriller is one heck of a wild ride. I can't wait to read his first two books. Who would have thought you could make a great thriller from the discovery of a DNA cure for heart disease? Great Scott! He did it.

Dread Champion is the sequel to Brandilyn Collins' book, Eyes of Elisha. While I enjoyed Eyes of Elisha, the plot didn't hold as many surprises as I would have liked. I'm very glad I kept reading. Dread Champion far exceeded my greatest expectations. The many threads of plot were tied together flawlessly and kept me guessing until the very end.

The heroine of the series is Chelsea Adams; wife, mother, and visionary--literally. Chelsea is a woman who sees visions from God. In Dread Champion, Chelsea is chosen to be on the jury of a well-publicized murder trial. Darren Welk, the "Salad King" of Salinas County, has been charged with the murder of his wife. Chelsea is sure she will be excused from the jury pool. After all, what lawyers in their right minds would pick her to be a part of a jury? Her visions of a young girl's murder in Trent Park had put her in the headlines just a year before. So she is stunned when she is accepted to be the second alternate juror. But, as the title Dread Champion (taken from Jeremiah 20:11) implies, God will accomplish His own purposes and choose to use whomever He will.

As fellow jurors give her the cold shoulder because of their knowledge of her visions; her visiting niece Kerra becomes involved with the son of the defendant; and God gives her a new, terrifying vision; Chelsea fights to pray and trust that God has placed her where He has for a reason.

God's work in each character's life in this story is as unique as the fingerprints He gives us. That, along with a tightly woven storyline, made this a book that was very hard to put down.

I had the privilege of reading a preview copy of Adam's wonderful book last summer. The story is enjoyable. It is also one that stays with the reader for a long time. The message is clear. Our thoughts play a powerful part in what happens in our lives! Adam's story is for adults as well as children. It is a book that not only entertains but conveys a strong underlying theme.
