One of her bestReview Date: 2008-11-16
James gives us great characterization -- the opinions, desires and weaknesses are gradually revealed as the plot proceeds, and no character is superfluous. We learn more about our favorite characters: AD and Emma Lavenham are planning their wedding, Kate Miskin has broken up with Piers and Benton is developing into a more interesting character.
At the same time, James' weaves in a gorgeous portrayal of the Dorset countryside, making it part of the fabric of the storyline. Having lived there for a couple of years, this book perfectly captures the images, sounds and even smells of one of the most beautiful parts of England.
The plotting is intricate with many layers. Even if you guess whodunnit, there are layers upon layers of devices and desires so that at the end, everything has fallen into place, meshing perfectly with the characters and revealing hidden depths.
Without giving the end away, PD James also finishes up several character storylines. If she were never to write another book, the series would have reached a satisfying conclusion with this great work of fiction. A real treat and immensely enjoyable.
An Unusually Upbeat EndingReview Date: 2008-09-26
The first murder victim is a freelance investigative journalist, and what bothers me a little is the depiction of her profession. First of all, I don't know if there are that many investigative reporters working freelance. But more important is the image of investigative journalism. To me this conjures up memories of Watergate, and hardworking reporters exposing polluting companies, corrupt politicians, and similar scandals. To the people in this book, in the world that P.D. James portrays, investigative journalists dig up dirt on little people, ruining their lives, just so they can earn a lot of money.
When you watch British mystery shows, the journalists are usually a flock of nuisances, irritating everyone else as they get in the way and ask less than helpful questions. So in this P.D. James seems to be faithful to a British media tradition. But I don't think it reflects the real world at all.
Other than that minor niggle, this is a very good read.
Farewell to Adam Dalgliesh?Review Date: 2008-10-06
I will not elaborate on this book. Clichés like masterpiece, excellence, pageturner, do not suit a work by this author. As for pageturner, this is not a word which applies well for "The Private Patient". As much as one is caught up in the solving of the mystery, it is a book to be read slowly. Devouring to the full every word of some of the most beautiful English prose ever written.
The book tells about the solving of two murders committed at a private clinic, an old manor house, in Dorset. Commander Adam Dalgliesh and his team have a tricky and meticulous task ahead. There are several suspects and motives, and no apparent direction in which to lead the investigation.
In true P.D. James style, the mystery solving is as much a journey into the human mind and its secrets as a sifting through the acts which may have lead to the deeds. The patience required by the solving team, is required also by the reader. There are no easy explanations. Every action is thoroughly analyzed, the reason sought to be explained in detail.
There is a sharp contrast between the story itself and the quiet writing style. Idyllic presentations of some of England's most beautiful countryside set the sceen for the horrendous deeds and often lead the reader astray into the purity and simplicity of nature's splendour.
"The Private Patient" is the complete Adam Dalgliesh mystery, to the extent of seemingly being a summoning up of all previous books. I do not think it's unfair to new readers to reveal that the book more than indicates that this might be the last Adam Dalgliesh mystery. From the dedication at the beginning of the book to the tying up of loose ends in the last chapter. In particular, is the last paragraph of extraordinary beauty and significance.
A book to be read more than once.
Superb P D James MysteryReview Date: 2008-09-24
The actual mystery involves a patient at a private clinic outside of London who wishes to have a scar removed from her face. The clinic sounds utterly marvelous (in an old estate) and the characters are wonderfully drawn. By the end of the book you feel you've once again left some friends behind.
A definite read for any mystery or British mystery fan. Enjoy.

Great Office and Sharepoint Integration BookReview Date: 2008-07-20

Comprehensive guide for MS Office and SharePoint integration developersReview Date: 2007-12-13
The organization of the book is very convenient and the first four chapters allow the reader to brush up his knowledge about MS Offices and SharePoint with abundant external links. Each consecutive chapter after that represents a standalone example based on a real-world scenario. The examples are focused on the integration with a particular MS Office product. For example Chapter 5 demonstrates a scenario where MS Word integrates with SharePoint and Chapter 9 shows how to construct PowerPoint slides using content stored in a SharePoint list. Every example starts with an introduction and walkthrough, which allows the reader to start reading the chapter directly without losing context.
The complexity of integrating products of the MS Office family in enterprise solutions requires quite a bit of knowledge and experience thus I do not recommend this book to beginners in SharePoint and MS Office programming. While this book has a plenty of introductory and historical information about MS Office development and SharePoint customization, it does not emphasize on important steps of professional SharePoint development such as creation of SharePoint solutions, list and site template customization and provisioning. However if you are already familiar with SharePoint (WSS 3, MOSS 2007) concepts such as solutions, features, workflow etc., this is the book to put all these features in the context of enterprise applications.
The software and hardware requirements for the examples in this book are quite high, so if you want to be able to implement them on your own you need to allocate some time to prepare a system with MOSS 2007, MS Office 2007 Enterprise, VS 2008 Professional or Team Edition and for the first example MS Office 2003. In addition there are several manual actions, which require a bit more time.
Something, which may not be obvious from the title, is the heavy use of the new MS Office document standard - Office Open XML (commonly referred to as OOXML or OpenXML). This was my first exposure to this format specification and I found its use throughout the book very useful.
Overall this book is of great value to intermediate and advanced developers, working on enterprise applications based on the MS Office system or integration projects with third party vendors. The examples can be read independently and each one of them not only demonstrates the implementation of a particular scenario, but also provokes ideas for other projects.

Ritual Ideas for all occasionsReview Date: 2007-11-18
This book provides an orientation to some of these "chosen times" according to the cycle of the year. It gives an overview of legends and folklore associated with each season, meditation, spellwork, chants and ritual suggestions for each.
It would be a helpful reference for a novice, as well a a more experienced person looking for some ideas to add to their ritual practice.
