Great review of all the high-yield bugs in case-based format. Really liked the book's style, presentation, and content. Also has good figures and answer explanations, which helped me understand several important concepts better. Definitely worth the money.

This book is small enough to fit in your white coat pocket for those down times on the ward. It is much more concise than Microbiology Made Ridiculously Easy and a much better study tool for Step 1 and Step 2. Microbiology is one of those very important areas of medicine that comes up again and again, regardless of what field you decide to go into. Mastering it is key and you'll get a good grip on it with this book. Very useful.

If you want to do better than just pass step 1, you have to read more than First Aid for the Boards. I would recommend this series as a great complement to enhance your understanding and knowledge of important, high yield topics for the exam. This volume is a good representation of what the series is like - concise, high yield, and containing lots of good figures and photos. The case explanations are fantastic and pragmatic.

Wonderful review series for USMLE Step 1 preparation. This volume in particular lives up to its name, with outstanding case presentations and explanations that make sure you understand the underlying pathophysiology concepts. Memorization was not as important as key concept understanding on my exam, and this book, as well as the rest of the series, contained the high-yield info that was on my exam (took 6 weeks ago).

My score ended up being higher than I had hoped for, and I give much of the credit to this book and the rest of the series. Strongly recommend for Step 1 review!

This is the best way to prepare for the exam! This guy knows his stuff and explains it VERY well. All case-based reviews - there are no multiple choice questions in these books. All the series is excellent except the anatomy volume was low-yield for exam.

Great way to review right before your exam. Helped me prepare for the case-based questions that now make up the majority of the step 1 test. The two pathology volumes give the biggest bang for the buck if money is tight, but I think the whole series (5 books: pathology I & II, microbiology, behavioral science & biostatistics, and anatomy & embryology) is outstanding.

I scored in the 87th percentile on Step 1 and credit much of my above-average performance to this series. The author seems very in tune with what's important for the boards. Lots of great info presented in the way it was asked about on my exam. Strongly recommend every book in the series, but particularly the pathology volumes. Check these out!

All my colleagues that recently took the Step 1 exam were raving about this series while I waited an extra two months to take the exam because I was so paranoid. I decided to buy the series after hearing all the hype and, for once, a book lived up to its reputation. This book in particular was extremely helpful to me in getting my mind ready for the types of questions that appeared on my exam. The format of the book has you guess/state the answer to various proposed questions at the end of each of 50 clinical vignettes, then you turn the page to get the answers and read a brief blurb of high-yield info related to the topic/condition. Great, concise, well-written explanations that give you confidence and understanding of important topics. Strongly recommend the whole series and this volume in particular.

The Player Piano Mouse is a wonderful picture book for young fans of mice and music. Set during the Chicago World's Columbian Exposition of 1893, The Player Piano Mouse tells of a little girl mouse named Melody who longs to play the piano. In addition to the colorful and charming illustrations of anthropomorphic mice characters, The Player Piano Mouse is enhanced with snippets of music - playable themes for each character that young people (or anyone else) taking piano lessons can play! The result is an exciting adventure about pursuing one's dream. Enhanced with a historical glossary of famous people and places that appear in the tale, The Player Piano Mouse is an exceptional gem of a storybook.

Dr. Dachman gives us a book that reminds us of an historic event in our country's past, introduces us to a character that we'll want to know better, and pulls it all together into a book that adults and children alike will treasure. The story is sweet and almost believeable, the illustrations are perfect, together what a phenomenal chronicle. The recommended website mentioned in the book made the whole experience so much fun to hear the music and see the book come to life--what a great combination for kids! Can't wait for the next adventure myself!!!

PD James fans are in for a treat in this finely crafted murder mystery. The set up is familiar: a murder occurs in a closed community; it looks like an inside job, which means there are only a handful of suspects -- but that doesn't make it easier for AD and his usual team to crack the case.

James gives us great characterization -- the opinions, desires and weaknesses are gradually revealed as the plot proceeds, and no character is superfluous. We learn more about our favorite characters: AD and Emma Lavenham are planning their wedding, Kate Miskin has broken up with Piers and Benton is developing into a more interesting character.

At the same time, James' weaves in a gorgeous portrayal of the Dorset countryside, making it part of the fabric of the storyline. Having lived there for a couple of years, this book perfectly captures the images, sounds and even smells of one of the most beautiful parts of England.

The plotting is intricate with many layers. Even if you guess whodunnit, there are layers upon layers of devices and desires so that at the end, everything has fallen into place, meshing perfectly with the characters and revealing hidden depths.

Without giving the end away, PD James also finishes up several character storylines. If she were never to write another book, the series would have reached a satisfying conclusion with this great work of fiction. A real treat and immensely enjoyable.

An Unusually Upbeat Ending

This latest Adam Dalgliesh mystery is up to P.D. James' usual standard. Once again there is a world filled with unhappy people from dysfunctional families. But some of those involved do live lives less bleak than often portrayed in her books, and the ending (more of an epilogue, placed half a year after the events in the rest of the book) is actually filled with a whole series of relatively happy couples.

The first murder victim is a freelance investigative journalist, and what bothers me a little is the depiction of her profession. First of all, I don't know if there are that many investigative reporters working freelance. But more important is the image of investigative journalism. To me this conjures up memories of Watergate, and hardworking reporters exposing polluting companies, corrupt politicians, and similar scandals. To the people in this book, in the world that P.D. James portrays, investigative journalists dig up dirt on little people, ruining their lives, just so they can earn a lot of money.

When you watch British mystery shows, the journalists are usually a flock of nuisances, irritating everyone else as they get in the way and ask less than helpful questions. So in this P.D. James seems to be faithful to a British media tradition. But I don't think it reflects the real world at all.

Other than that minor niggle, this is a very good read.

Farewell to Adam Dalgliesh?

Always on holding a copy of a new P.D. James novel in my hands, I feel awe. The jacket, the paper, the print - all presented with quality and taste preparing for what is to come.

I will not elaborate on this book. Clichés like masterpiece, excellence, pageturner, do not suit a work by this author. As for pageturner, this is not a word which applies well for "The Private Patient". As much as one is caught up in the solving of the mystery, it is a book to be read slowly. Devouring to the full every word of some of the most beautiful English prose ever written.

The book tells about the solving of two murders committed at a private clinic, an old manor house, in Dorset. Commander Adam Dalgliesh and his team have a tricky and meticulous task ahead. There are several suspects and motives, and no apparent direction in which to lead the investigation.

In true P.D. James style, the mystery solving is as much a journey into the human mind and its secrets as a sifting through the acts which may have lead to the deeds. The patience required by the solving team, is required also by the reader. There are no easy explanations. Every action is thoroughly analyzed, the reason sought to be explained in detail.

There is a sharp contrast between the story itself and the quiet writing style. Idyllic presentations of some of England's most beautiful countryside set the sceen for the horrendous deeds and often lead the reader astray into the purity and simplicity of nature's splendour.

"The Private Patient" is the complete Adam Dalgliesh mystery, to the extent of seemingly being a summoning up of all previous books. I do not think it's unfair to new readers to reveal that the book more than indicates that this might be the last Adam Dalgliesh mystery. From the dedication at the beginning of the book to the tying up of loose ends in the last chapter. In particular, is the last paragraph of extraordinary beauty and significance.

A book to be read more than once.

After the first page it is very clear that you are once again reading something by one of the masters of the genre. And Adam and his fiance are both involved in the story although she is not involved at all in the mystery.
The actual mystery involves a patient at a private clinic outside of London who wishes to have a scar removed from her face. The clinic sounds utterly marvelous (in an old estate) and the characters are wonderfully drawn. By the end of the book you feel you've once again left some friends behind.
A definite read for any mystery or British mystery fan. Enjoy.

A Book to be Savoured

Review Date: 2008-10-10
This is a book that should be savoured for a number of reasons. The first is that P.D. James has lost none of her talent for writing a novel that grips and holds you. Also, the book is more than just a little mystery story. There is a whole lot more here than that. It's a book that held me in its thrall right until the end. Of course we have Adam Dalgliesh, and we have his team (Kate and Benton). We also have an intriguing mystery when a private patient in a country clinic is found dead in her room. Adam and his team travel to Dorset to try to solve the murder. The book is complex and the murder is also. And last, but not least, there is a possibility that this may be the last Adam Dalgliesh book. Ms. James has certainly approached this issue throughout the book. I will be sad if that is so, but it is a wonderful way to end a brilliant creation! Ms. James is a wonderful author, and I truly revelled in this book. I put it down with a real sense of sadness, but I think it is a book that should be read more than once. A second and third reading may be in order in order that all the rich nuances can be grasped. I have to say, that although it is only the middle of October, I think this is the most significant book of fiction that I will read in 2008.

SharePoint as an application development platform is long on potential, short on guidlines. Pro SharePoint Solution Development guides the user through applciation development techniques that leverage the infrastructure (security, doc management, database access, navigation) of SharePoint to deliver application functionality. This book does not assume the reader is an advanced .Net developer, nor does it treat the reader as brand new to the concepts of application development. It cuts directly to the use of built in features and the creation of custom features and how to bind them together to create solutions.

I am involved with SharePoint developer education so I buy and scan through every single SharePoint title when it becomes available. There are plenty of SharePoint books out today that all cover the same basic topics. This book was special because it had a significant amount of content that I have not seen anywhere else. In particular, I like the way this books explains how a developer can integrate Office 2007 office applications together with SharePoint 2007. It goes beyond the typical 'hello world' examples and offers plenty of gems that could only have been gathered from real-world experience rolling out projects in a production environment. Congrats to Ed and Susie!

Comprehensive guide for MS Office and SharePoint integration developers
Helpful Votes: 5 out of 5 total.
Review Date: 2007-12-13
This book offers an indebt review of how SharePoint fits in the Microsoft Office ecosystem. It delivers a variety of advanced examples, richly illustrated with sample code, downloadable from Apress, and step by step instructions and illustrations in the book itself.

The organization of the book is very convenient and the first four chapters allow the reader to brush up his knowledge about MS Offices and SharePoint with abundant external links. Each consecutive chapter after that represents a standalone example based on a real-world scenario. The examples are focused on the integration with a particular MS Office product. For example Chapter 5 demonstrates a scenario where MS Word integrates with SharePoint and Chapter 9 shows how to construct PowerPoint slides using content stored in a SharePoint list. Every example starts with an introduction and walkthrough, which allows the reader to start reading the chapter directly without losing context.

The complexity of integrating products of the MS Office family in enterprise solutions requires quite a bit of knowledge and experience thus I do not recommend this book to beginners in SharePoint and MS Office programming. While this book has a plenty of introductory and historical information about MS Office development and SharePoint customization, it does not emphasize on important steps of professional SharePoint development such as creation of SharePoint solutions, list and site template customization and provisioning. However if you are already familiar with SharePoint (WSS 3, MOSS 2007) concepts such as solutions, features, workflow etc., this is the book to put all these features in the context of enterprise applications.

The software and hardware requirements for the examples in this book are quite high, so if you want to be able to implement them on your own you need to allocate some time to prepare a system with MOSS 2007, MS Office 2007 Enterprise, VS 2008 Professional or Team Edition and for the first example MS Office 2003. In addition there are several manual actions, which require a bit more time.

Something, which may not be obvious from the title, is the heavy use of the new MS Office document standard - Office Open XML (commonly referred to as OOXML or OpenXML). This was my first exposure to this format specification and I found its use throughout the book very useful.

Overall this book is of great value to intermediate and advanced developers, working on enterprise applications based on the MS Office system or integration projects with third party vendors. The examples can be read independently and each one of them not only demonstrates the implementation of a particular scenario, but also provokes ideas for other projects.

Terrific book but not for those new to SharePoint development

This is the 5th book on MOSS 2007/WSS 3.0 that I have bought so far and it is the best as far as SharePoint development. Each chapter after chapter 4 describes a real-world project for integrating SharePoint with Office. The book assumes that you already understand SharePoint development and .NET programming. You can download the code and I have not had any errors compiling it so far. The book makes heavy use of the System.IO.Packaging namespace and so there are many examples generating xml-based office documents. This book gets straight to the point with lots of code. I highly recommend it.

This book has a lot of great information concerning the Sabbats including zodiacal, astrological and history of each Sabbat. Also has good information pertaining to the Esbats and a few great tables of timeframes and correspondences. It is a fun read, offering many examples that will get you on your way to performing your own rituals for the Sabbats. The only drawback for myself was that it is mainly written for the female audience, as all the rituals are written in the female perspective. It can be easily changed around for the male reader however being overlooked is not something I take lightly. All in all it is a good book of information in the areas it touches on.

As the introduction to this book explains, "there are many ways to acknowledge the passage of time." The Wiccan Year presents "spiritual expressions grounded through clear intentions and repeated on auspicious days at carefuly chosen times so that we may attune with the power of the changing Earth and allow this Power to transform our lives."
This book provides an orientation to some of these "chosen times" according to the cycle of the year. It gives an overview of legends and folklore associated with each season, meditation, spellwork, chants and ritual suggestions for each.
It would be a helpful reference for a novice, as well a a more experienced person looking for some ideas to add to their ritual practice.

Adams brilliantly weaves her characters through an 'end of days' experience that will keep you on the edge of your seat (At least it kept me on the edge of mine!) Can't wait for book three!

"Refining Fire" held my interest right to the end. I didn't want it to finish. The characters are so real, I can't get them out of my head and I'm intrigued to see how the story progresses in Volume 3. Linda Paulson Adams is a writer to be admired and followed, in both the LDS and National market. She faces life square on--and deals with possible future events in ways that made me gasp. A galloping good saga!

Linda has done it again! Her first book Thy Kingdom Come: Prodigal Journey, the first in this three part story was awesome as well! But this one was even better! I am sooooo anxious for the last one!

I was thoroughly touched by both books and was moved even more into a healing place from which I found strength to deal with my own dragons and all the help from inside to work together through a healing journey. I found that it was ok to have dragons and if one can work together you can get through anything. The books also taught me about a great place that you can go to inside where everything is calm and beautiful and safe where there is blue light, and you can even ride on a dolphin and find lightness of heart while dealing with the most troublesome areas of my life. I found you can create in your mind that great place to go to when things hurt so much, a place all your own. Found that even the most meanest dragons can be beautiful swans. These books helped me be ok with the healing journey I must face in order to become the person I want to be and that it's ok to be scared and confused and sad. I found that I can have fun and have feelings that are good and work on other issues at the same time and rely on my inner strengths to get through even the most troublesome times and find healing at last. The nice thing about these books is how well written they are and easy to understand and to be ok with what you must deal with. Yes while going through the forest there are many dangerous animals and yet you can find strength in the forest as well and beauty. These books helped me to see that and to go through this journey although painful and yet very calming while working together to all become beautiful swans and then you find you all were beautiful swans all along, some needed help to see it that way. The illustrations in these books are so colorful and meaningful.

An adult fairy tale for survivors of childhood abuse who used dissociation to cope with their real life horrors. A comfort to children of survivors, their spouses, and others wishing to learn about what causes multiplicity and how it works. A talisman of hope for those learning to work with the inner team, the talents and pain within.

My Psychiatrist recommended this book to me and let me read his copy of it at the end of one of our sessions. At first I wondered what his motives were in suggesting I read a children's book, but after the first page I knew exactly why. The book was like a divine inspiration to me, helping me to struggle on and strive for the full integration of my "parts." As a child, I had numerous imaginary friends much like the friends who join the little girl during her journey through the woods. Some of them later became extensions of my self, and eventually, integral parts of who I am. I used to just want them to go away and leave me alone. After reading this book, though, I realize that I need them just as much as they need me and one day we'll all become one again. That was what I once feared, but now I know it's what we all truly want.

comforting, healing book - for most but not all

For me, this is a very comforting and healing book. The little girl reminds me so much of myself - and her process is so familiar to me and I'm sure many who are healing from abuse and have disassociated during the process. The one thing I would mention is that it startled me a little that this book suggests integration may be necessary - while I know some people who feel that it's not necessary or even desirable for them personally.
