What a gem!Review Date: 2008-11-15
There's lots of solid technical information, which is given in easy-to-understand descriptions.
The author's thorough understanding of all facets of how the bike works, and of how the rider uses the bike as a tool for enjoyment of our natural surroundings, really comes through. I can't think of anything that's not covered, and covered well, by this book. Excellent job!

An engaging and detailed introduction to dual-sport ridingReview Date: 2008-11-02
When you take the book into your hand and it falls open, the first hints that you've got your hands on a valuable resource come to you. To start, its introduction was written by motorcycling legend Malcolm Smith, the jovial and amazingly talented focus of many parts of "On Any Sunday"...a renowned international motorcycling hero for several decades. Across from this introduction, the Mr. Adams' acknowledgement indicates that his royalties have been assigned to the Pediatric Brain Tumor Foundation, a generous act and also one that automatically makes any reader a charitable contributor. It was a deft touch and one which virtually makes the reader a part of this book's success. The tone of his remarks about choosing a dual-sport (a choice I am in the process of making for the first time) also conveys well the romantic nature of motorcycling.
Motorcycles are about dreams, dreams of freedom and dreams of adventure. That is obviously something that this author understands well because he frames what could be a dry technical treatise about bike and part selection criteria into a search for which motorcycle will best suit your individual motorcycling dream. Do you want to rack up a lot of miles on tarmac, ride until the road ends and then continue on trails or focus on riding on trails all the way? Yet, while appreciating the individual choice that a dual-sport represents, the author also clearly and concisely presents the criteria to be considered while making that choice. It was very nicely done.
From the choice of motorcycle type, the author then proceeds logically to looking at gear selection, a matter made more complicated than selecting street gear by the more diverse climactic conditions in which trail riders can find themselves. Many street riders ride only during good weather but a minority ride year round and dual-sport and other off-road riders seem to have a lot in common with those riders. A look at how street and off-road riders' needs differ is presented, followed by technical details about motorcycle setup for on and off-road use. Tires and suspension setup in particular are looked at in detail.
From equipment selection, the author switches over to a look at how riders need to rework their "mental software" to handle situations different from the street riding they may already be used to. Two chapters go on to discuss specific basic and more advanced off-road riding skill, skills different from the ones street riders use. These chapters are followed closely by one whose topic is trailside repairs, a vital skill to cultivate for those who may be riding where no one else will pass for weeks.
Finally, having engaged the reader at the start and then progressed to a very thorough review of technical information, the author returns to looking at the fun aspects of dual-sport riding: organized clubs and events (riding is a solitary activity which is often enriched when shared with other people), how to ensure that trails remain open for off-road riding by working with others, essential navigational skills and information about some of the ins and outs of trips and distance touring.
This book is a very valuable technical look at an aspect of motorcycling with which I am just starting to become familiar. But even more than that, it is now a new favorite book and one which I anticipate using as a reference for a long time to come. Well done!

Fantastic Book! Love it!Review Date: 2008-10-16
As someone above mentioned, it does go in depth a little more with the training aspect to train your dog to get off something by saying "off" following with "good off" - or, to only say "no!" when it's something that you dont want them to try again - as opposed to saying no when the pug gets a training command wrong. This stuff makes perfect sense to use clear words and praise so they're not confused, it's just stuff that i probably wouldn't have thought about myself. Not only these few things, but there are more like them in the book. It's just a great general book to have for a pug owner (or soon-to-be owners, like me!)

I looked up the author, who has a few other book on Amazon, and according to his website, there will be a Music Theory book for this same company -- I can only suppose it will take off where this book left off.
The book reads very clean and the many musical examples make the book a pleasure to look at (as i think written music is beautiful). There is an audio CD, which is also excellent.
I hope this helps someone get a grasp on what this book is about. I have bought a few theory type books over the years to help with my piano playing (self taught). This is simply the only book that has started at a spot where I can "jump right in". Well done!

A Great Place to Start Your Fitness ProgramReview Date: 2005-03-04
While the book does provide a good introduction to fitness, you may want to supplement it with one or two other beginning fitness books to get all the information you need (I recommend "Barnes & Noble Basics: Getting in Shape" as a 2nd read).
TETFB breaks down and explains all the components of a good fitness program. It focuses on cardio, strength training, flexibility, sleep, and even stress reduction. I found Chapter 4: The Principles of Exercise to be especially helpful. It focused on using the "FITT" principle and finding your aerobic target zones in order to set goals and make the most out of exercise. Chapter 7: Strength Training explains how to determine the amount of weight, frequency, and duration that is best for each individual. This was also very helpful.
If you need help in choosing the right fitness activities, Author Ellen Karper provides detailed descriptions of the most popular exercise activities, along with the equipment you'll need, and safety tips.
The nutrition section is a primer in how to eat healthy. I didn't find it as helpful as the fitness section. That's not to say it didn't provide important information. It does. I just found it to be a little confusing and technical at times. There's got to be an easier way to find out your nutritional needs without all that math work and measuring!
There is also a chapter that many people will find helpful. It's for people with special needs such as pregnant women, diabetics, and older people. Although I didn't need this section, I appreciate that they didn't leave anyone out. Thumbs up for that.
Finally there is a short chapter on injury prevention and care.
Overall I would recommend this book to beginners. It covers the basics well, is easy to read, and was helpful in beginning my own fitness program.
The best fitness book money can buy.Review Date: 2003-12-05
All that made me embittered to the whole subject of fitness, and it essentially became my second "F" word. This negative perspective had years to grow into resentment. "Does nothing matter about me except the way I look?" I'd think in frustration. At that point I could have won the Pulitzer and Nobel prizes consecutively and I still would have been depressed because I didn't have washboard abs.
It was a double-edged sword, for while I resented myself for being out of shape on one hand, on the other I resented the "health nuts" even more and would sooner have my arm torn off by rabid dogs than do a push-up. Because then I'd be conforming to "their" demands and "they" would win.
All that changed when I read this book. I was feeling increasingly lethargic in my daily life and decided to borrow this book from the library. I was skeptical from page one, and as I started reading I began to think, "ok. Tell my why fitness is so important."
And it did exactly that.
While other resources I've read recited a litany of incredibly shallow reasons to set fitness goals ("you'll look better," "You'll have better performance in bed," etc), this book did none of that. It listed clearly and concisely, in plain English, exactly why fitness is so important in daily life. Never once did I feel condescended and I never got the impression that my intelligence was being insulted. One line from the book that really won me over is as follows:
"You will improve your appearance through regular exercise, but more importantly, you will improve your body's ability to do more with less effort, and that feels great!"
Those three words, "but more importantly," single-handedly separated this book from all the other ego-driven, self-indulgent, fad-inducing, shallow fitness media out there. The author made me realize that there is so much more to fitness than a washboard stomach or counting calories like an obsessive-compulsive madman. It is conductive to improving all areas of one's life.
The illustrations in this book also stuck out in my mind. Where every other book, magazine, and video I've seen showcased perfect models (the "this could be you if you buy into our product/fad" thing), this book's little cartoons feature average Joes exercising, seemingly for the sheer enjoyment of the activity. I found that highly motivating. That, combined with this book's down-to-Earth presentation dispelled the notion that one should strive to become some kind of Fitness God, but rather to feel better and be happy.
"The Everything Total Fitness Book" is a real eye-opener, and it showed me just how important a healthy lifestyle is. Armed with this book, I am certain I can construct a new lifestyle that is conductive to producing an energized feeling of wellness and satisfaction with my life. I've borrowed this book 4 times in a row, and I doubt the library will ever see this volume again until I get around to buying my very own copy.

"Find A Way" stands out from other motivational books in that Dennis McCurdy lived his Find A Way program long before he even knew he had a method. His innate knowledge, bolstered by his years of embracing the writings of other great thinkers, is what sets "Find A Way" apart from other motivational books.
