I used Paul's book to train my puppy and it has been one of the most rewarding things I've ever done! His methods are completely reward based and compassion driven so there's no using pinch or choke collars, something I am very opposed to. I have have had great success overcoming all the normal puppy issues such as potty training, nipping, separation anxiety, and digging by using Paul's methods.

All in all I can't say enough good things about this book!

Well written and helpful

This book is it! Five stars quality!
We got "The Puppy Whisperer" with the hope of getting an overall guide to training our new puppy full of energy. We were amazed at how detailed and full of great advice this book is. Paul Owens explains the bare bones of dog training technique while maintaining a style full of warmth and compassion which makes for a perfect combination helping to train the puppy to be an obedient and loving companion.
Definitely recommended for people who want an easy to use tool and a serious method.

I recently got a new puppy after not having one for many years. I thought I'd brush up on new training techniques and "non-violent" sounded good. I read the book before I brought her home and everything has worked beautifully! All the advice, techniques and training have been fantastik and I would highly recommend this book. I've had my pup now for a little over 2 weeks and there has been 1 accident in the house - really! It has made puppy ownership a joy instead of a pain. Thanks Paul!

While this book is written with the male being the Romantic Liar, it applies equally to the reverse situation.

This is a very important book and should be read by everyone who wants a better understanding of the dynamics of the romantic relationship process. The book is filled with actual case studies. Some are truly heart breaking and it is fairly easy to think that you could never be duped by some smooth talking Romantic Liar. As Dr. Caldell points out, it can and does happen to well adjusted people.

Not only does Sally do a great job of pointing out six of the tell tale signs of a Romantic Liar, she goes into great detail concerning the healing process. If you have been or are currently in a deceptive relationship, this is the most important part of the book. All too often people think they are able to change their partner. As Dr. Caldwell points out, it will not happen. It is difficult enough to change our own behavior, even when we want to. It is nearly impossible to change the behavior of someone else. And the Romantic Liar would be one of the toughest to change.

The best advise for anyone caught in an abusive or deceptive relationship is to leave as quickly as possible. While we all have the desire to let a person know that we know how low life they are, there is nothing to be gained by confrontation and often it can cost you - not the person you have the confrontation with. Just don't do it.

While the book was written for women, it gives great insight into the dynamics of romantic relationships. Even though the book deals with highly dsyfuncational relationships, it can offer some insight and guidelines into all relationships.

Well worth reading.

I sure wish I had this book a few years back, I might would have made wiser choices when dealing with dishonest men. I am surprised that men could devise such schemes to deceive people, I don't think I will ever underestimate men again. The whole web of deceit they create is sordidly ingenius!!

What every woman and girl should know.

After many years on Amazon and many books, this is the first review I am compelled to write.

I'm an educated, successful woman in my early 30's, and have just gone through a classic romantic deception (I never thought I would be 'stupid' enough to fall for such schlock). All of us are susceptible, and if we were only taught early on, we would be much less so. The material in this book should be shared in a seminar format with every young woman in high school.

This book has great substance and covers much more than 'the six signs', including getting out of the involvement safely (as these men are often dangerous) and getting over it (in the chapter 'Some things you need to know'), as well as nipping it in the bud should such a situation possibly present itself again (in the chapter 'Survival guide').

Importantly, it helps you to understand that if you've gone through this it's not because you're an idiot. And, if you haven't gone through it, you are naieve to think that you're too smart to. Basically, if you are an honest person yourself, it is normal for you to expect that those around you are honest - especially in intimate situations. But, shockingly, this is not always the case. This book helps you to become aware of the worst type of dishonesty that is out there, and how to spot it before you get used (or come to grips with it if you already have been).

I think this knowledge will also help one to be more appreciative when they really have come across a great catch, which can only be truly known after careful scrutiny - and this book certainly helps with the scrutiny part.

Buy it. It's a small investment with a big return for your heath and safety.

I'm So Glad I Read this Book

I so wished I'd read this book 6 months ago. I was a victim of Romantic Deception. The red flags were all there and I didn't want to see them.

Sally explains in detail why this happens and how to NOT blame ourselves. We think we did something wrong. She also explains how these men almost have sociopathic tendencies and they KNOW they are lying, yet continue the relationship anyway.

I HIGHLY recommend this book for any woman out there who is in the dating world, ESPECIALLY if you are doing the online thing.

A MUST HAVE BOOK.

Must read for every single woman

This book is the most telling insightful book ever written about lying. It can happen to you (regardless of age, financial circumstance, education, looks etc.)---that's the biggest thing to recognize---prepare yourself. I am buying this book for all of my single friends. I read it cover to cover and it gave me everything I needed to assess the situation, understand why it happened, heal, act, and prevent it again.

I keep buying and rebuying this book because I am constantly giving my copy away as a gift and therefore need to replace it. This book is especially meaningful to me because I was reading it at a time of my life when I was brought closer to someone by what I believed to have been a miracle. The matter is very personal and without going into the details, (no, it was not a potential romance, I am happily married) I will allow as how the hoped for miracle, so far, has not panned out. However, reading these tales of people brought closer together has been uplifting and this book has carried me through some emotional moments in my own life. I recommend this to all people who have a spiritual and sensitive side to their personalities.

I adore the entire series of Small Miracles

I love the Small Miracles Books. I keep buying and rebuying this book because I am constantly giving my copy away as a gift and therefore need to replace it. This book is especially meaningful to me because I was reading it at a time that I was giving up on miracles and optimism. However, this book has been uplifting. I know can realize that small miracles exsist in everyday life and there is always a reason to keepsmiling. I recommend this series to everyone. I have been inspired by Yitta Halberstam and Judith Leventhal. There work seeps out inspiration and devotion to believe. Each time I read a story a warm feeling of love engulfs me. I know believe in small miracles again. I feel as if this line of books took me from being in a negative slump to being optimistic again. I highly recemmend this book:) The personal message I have recieved is "Keepsmiling and Love Life!"

Straight-forward, crisply articulated and with practically no unnecessary fluff, Mike Shanahan's book, "Think Like a Champion," compellingly argues that the game of life is basically won or lost before the "players" take the field. Shanahan asserts his point of view over sixteen easy-to-digest chapters (each about ten pages or less) on the diffent tenets of becoming the best at what you do.

What I liked about this book is that while the author culls specific examples from his football career, the "moral of the story" is clearly applicable to ANYONE seeking to become the best in any endeavor. Offering an excellent, enjoyable read to both sports enthusiasts and non enthusiasts alike, the author's writing style is to neither excessively arm-wave nor make unsupported generalizations.

In fact, part of the Shanahan's credibility here is in his willingness to name names when providing examples of people living up to a credo espoused in a given chapter or more dramatically, falling short.

Written with humility, Shanahan's book leaves the reader feeling that there is nothing magical to becoming a huge success -- other than having a plan and putting in the blood, sweat and tears required to make that plan a success. Or as the author concludes, citing legendary coach Vince Lombardi, "Your quality of life is in direct proportion to your commitment to excellence." So true.

A die-hard Broncos fan from the days dying watching those ridiculous striped socks and watching Fran Tripuka get killed, what a job Shanahan did turning it around into two Super Bowls in a row.

Learning of his background and his principles makes me now not only a more avid Bronco fan, but also a Shanahan fan as well. His perseverance from the days of his kidney injury to how he became part of Sooner coaching staff till today is truly one of principles of success through hard work, not gifts or who you know or any of the other myths most people who never get anywhere fall for and are unmotivated. Most of them just don't ever want to work hard at anything, but have it handed to them. Shanahan disproves all that bunk and shows how it came to be. Unbelievable that when given the Raiders head-job, didn't even have the downpayment for a house.

This guy is very endearing to so many of us who never had the backgrounds for those connections, but wanting something bad enough, and always believing it, achieve it one goal at a time.

Great advice, especially appreciate his concern for balance.

Excellent read. Thanks, Mike, from a new fan and admirer.

I have heard this advice before: If you want to be successful
at something, find the most successful person you can in that area, listen to what they say, and try to follow it. Well, its hard to imagine a football coach more sucessful than Mike Shanahan. Here's a guy who started with a dream: to be a head football coach, started as an unpaid volunteer for a college team, and worked his way to be one of the best, most respected, coaches in the NFL (winning 2 consecutive Superbowls) at a young age.

The great thing is, he has written a book that is designed to help people win beyond football, in any area of life. Shanahan breaks it down for you: the way he prepares, some struggles he's had, some ways he motivates people (including the little things that we learn are so critical), very good wisdom concerning life, and a lot more. Also very critical is the fact that this book is very easy to read and understand.

You even get a bonus section in each chapter written by some of the greatest people and minds in football: Paul Tagliabue, Jerry Rice, Bill Walsh, John Elway, Deion Sanders, Steve Young, George Seifert, Joe Montana, Marcus Allen, Al Michaels, and more. They give their own take on the subject being discussed in the chapter, which is not only informative, but like the book itself, filled with wisdom.

The chapters consist of 16 basic areas to focus on to become successful, things like: Preparing (all of life is preparation, and not preparing is preparing to fail), Sacrificing (don't expect to get anything good done without sacrifice, if it was easy, everyone would do it), Learning (without learning, you will be hopelessly stuck where you are), Detailing (the devil is definitely in the details and that's where things often break down). This is just a taste of the wisdom in this book. Highly recommended for people looking to improve themselves.

I tripped across this book at my local library and I am here looking for my own copy, as we are limited on how long we keep it. I brutally removed the kids from their TV addiction, and the transition has been difficult on the older ones especially. This book has been my salvation. The prereader like to pick out things by picture, my beginner read has no problem understanding the direction and my toddler and teen get involved too. We have used this to fill the huge void of television and to stave of the "mom I am bored..." routine. This is a small book it fits in my purse and we take it with us everywhere. Breaking the index down by activity type means I can have a Doctor's waiting room idea or a park idea up in running in 2 minutes. The materials list is in the margin for easy access and all the material are everyday every house items, half of which are in my purse any way... This book is a keeper!

This book was recommended in the book Living the Simple Life. I'm so glad I took the time to get it. It's a wonderful resource for busy families looking to spend some quality time together. So turn that TV off and buy this book. Encourages you and your child's imagination and they learn through playing with simple things around the house and the bonus is that by not watching that TV, you've spent memorable time with each other...what could be better?

Janet Attard is a familiar name to most people doing business on the Internet, especially on AOL.

She has been the force behind the growth of the Business Know-How discussion boards & newsletter. She plans over 70 weekly live chats, as well as compiling thousands of articles, tips, & hints on every aspect of small business you can name.

This book begins after you've done all the basic start-up work for your business. There is no discussion of the best legal form for your business to take & you won't find questionnaires to test your entrepreneurial skills. Attard assumes you've passed that point & are ready to go to work.

What you will get is insight on topics such as:

=> finding suppliers => mailing & shipping strategies => trade show savvy => selling to the government => building a web site without going broke => making cash flow => how to make a big impression on a small budget => using the mail to build business => choosing & using office equipment

I must admit that I thought Attard would have nothing new or of interest to me. After all, I've been in business for some time. (egotistical, isn't it?)

But, she surprised me with a number of interesting & useful ideas. Briefly, here are a few:

=> make use of a CD-ROM phone directory. Attard suggests one called SelectPhone costing about $150. It will allow you to find customers & suppliers. (p. 84)

=> ask for an editorial calendar. The editorial calendar briefly lists the types of stories that will be covered each month for the calendar year. Newspapers & magazines plan far ahead for special topic issues. (p 91)

=> advertise where your competitors advertise. If your competitors have been advertising for many months in a specific media, their ads are probably working.(p. 104)

=> familiarize yourself with advertising laws. Just because you're small doesn't mean you can ignore or avoid complying with laws regulating advertising.(p 120) There follows a page and a half of laws that might trip up a small business owner.

=> buy US postage stamps at less than their face value. Buy your stamps from a stamp dealer rather than the post office. Stamp dealers often buy stamps in quantity hoping they will go up in value.(p. 149) I really liked this one and * never * would have thought of it.

I could give many more examples, but that wouldn't be fair to Attard, who's obviously put blood & sweat into this book

Let me leave you with some more topics of interest:

=> using the web ferret for quick web searching => the when & how of yellow page ads => what's a press room & why you want to use it => your trade show toolbox -- what's in it & why => what you should know about credit card fraud

You're all getting used to the fact that I'm as much a stickler about the design of a book as I am about content.

This book is well laid out, the type is large enough to read easily, & typefaces are consistent through out the book.

The few gray boxes used are well placed & don't interrupt the flow of the text. My only dislike is this: to make the * tips * boxes stand out from the other gray boxes, all the text contained within them is underlined. They are the only part of the book I found difficult to read & found myself skipping over them most of the time. I know I missed valuable information because of it.

Janet has outdone herself this time!

Over the years I've come to expect excellence from Janet Attard -- whether at her website, in her books, or on her excellent AOL forums.

So, I guess I shouldn't have been surprised that, when reading her newest offering "Business Know-How," I was once again blown away by her ability to take topics that are near and dear to the hearts of all micro- and home-based business owners and make them not only helpful but enjoyable.

The subjects she covers are especially important for smaller businesses -- like how to keep your costs down and how to maximize your exposure and publicity (on and off line). The book is written in a very "user-friendly" style -- short, pointed paragraphs and lots of practical bullet charts and lists.

It's a must read and a good investment in your business.

Great Advice For Running A Small Business
Helpful Votes: 5 out of 6 total.
Review Date: 2002-07-21
While some books, such as "The Entrepreneurial Mindset" and my own "Thinking Like An Entrepreneur," are great at providing philosophical guidance and strategic insight into becoming an entrepreneur, other books are great at providing practical, hands-on information for dealing with specific, small business situations. "Business Know-How" provides excellent, hands-on information which will help you run your small or home business.

"Business Know-How" is jam-packed with hints, tips, resources, and suggestions for saving money, growing your sales, and running your business more effectively. The lessons are particularly useful to small and home-based businesses.

Half of U.S. small businesses are home-based. Attard says that although hard work and good products are necessary to succeed in small business, hard work and good products alone aren't enough. Attard writes: "To be successful, you need to know how to do business. You need to know the best ways to find customers, to sell to them, to use technology, to cut costs, and to deal with problems that inevitably arise. And you need to know how to do it all on a shoestring."

The First Chapter, Finding the Real Opportunities, will help you generate ideas for a new business. Attard suggests: "Businesses don't just happen. They are made... your success relies on what you bring to the business. If you love what you do, your passion for the business will drive you to be knowledgeable, creative, and persistent."

One of Attard's recommendations is "Look for Avalanches" which will help carry you in a successful direction. As an example, Attard discusses Cheyenne Software, which jumped on the Local Area Network trend by developing enhancements to Novell LANs. She also discusses demographic trends and points out a few particularly lucrative areas, such as corporate training. We learn that corporate training is a $50 billion market.

We also learn that African Americans represented a $300 billion market by 1994. Attard advises: "The secret to successfully targeting these and other cultural markets is to pay attention to your audience's heritage and lifestyle. Don't just replace pictures of white people with pictures of African Americans or Latinos, and don't translate English word for word into any other language. Your marketing efforts will fail if you do. Instead, tailor the sales literature or ads to accurately reflect the lifestyle of the targeted market."

But, your business doesn't need to be earth shattering or target a huge market. One of Attard's first businesses was making beanbags shaped like frogs. Attard writes: "I filled them with birdseed instead of beans to make them pliable and less lumpy to the touch. ... I could produce them quickly and kept my costs low by making the frogs from inexpensive fabric remains."

Attard also suggests considering "Mundane Moneymakers," such as home cleaning or plumbing for your start-up business. Attard writes: "The key to making money with the mundane is to sell something your customers can't do, don't want to do, don't have the time to do, or can't get done elsewhere."

As a great example of a mundane, but potentially profitable, business, Attard tells us about a doggy do-do clean-up business which cleans up doggy waste in dog owners' back yards. Now, there's a good example of an unromantic business! After a few years, the founding entrepreneur sold the company for a quarter of a million dollars.

(Passion for doggy clean-up probably doesn't last too long. Attard doesn't say how big a market doggy do-do clean-up represents. But with the help of her outstanding chapter on business research, you probably could make a fairly good estimate. Exercise for Entrepreneurship students: Estimate the market size of the doggy do-do business. Extra credit: Measure the market size in Kibbels N' Bits.)

Most of "Business Know-How" isn't about starting a business. It's about operating your business effectively.

One money saving tip from Business Know-How's Chapter, Keeping the Tax Collector at Bay, is "Employ Your Spouse and Deduct the Entire Amount of Your Medical Insurance Premiums."

Because there are limitations on the tax deductibility of medical insurance premiums providing coverage to sole proprietors and S-corporation owners who hold more than 2% of the corporate shares, but no such deductibility limits on health insurance coverage provided to your other employees, Attard suggests employing your spouse.

Attard writes: "There are no such limitations on the deductibility of medical insurance premiums you make on behalf of your employees, however. If your spouse is an employee of your business, the business can pay for (and deduct the cost of) his or her medical insurance. Your spouse would then add you as a dependent on his or her policy. This would make the entire premium deductible by your business as a business expense. If you don't have employees other than your spouse, and don't have any other good source of health insurance, this strategy offers significant tax savings by converting a personal expense to a [tax deductible] business expense."

Attard notes one important caveat. If you have other employees, you might be required by law to provide them the same health care coverage as your spouse.

"Business Know-How" has outstanding chapters about conducting business research, finding suppliers, shoestring marketing, selling to the government, home office equipment, and dealing with taxation of your home-based business. A primary focus of the book is saving money and reducing your costs, which is crucial to success. The book also provides a wealth of referrals to gather more information.

I picked up this book after my dog died, and I was feeling really lousy and depressed. My heart was warmed by these tales submitted by ordinary folks just like me. This book put a smile on my face. It also will remind you to be thankful for what you have, which will make you feel good no matter what. The stories will not disappoint. Often they seem like made up miracles, but they are all true! The authors found people with uplifting tales from daily life, proving that truth is more inspirational than fiction! If you are feeling down this is the book for you, it helped me immensely!

With a new introduction and several new stories, A Cup of Comfort Classic Edition will bring joy and inspiration to another decade of readers. This is the book that started the Cup of Comfort series, and it is as good as it was years ago when first published. The stories are so varied- some funny, some warm, some sad, yet all carrying a message of hope and inspiration. You can read the book from cover to cover when feeling blue, or pick it up and read a story a day - either way your spirits will be lifted when reading the words in this classic book about real people who experience miracles or the simple joy of human compassion and kindness.

For me, there is no better medicine than a cup of chamomile or orange ginger tea and a book of inspirational stories. So it is with A Cup of Comfort : Stories that warm your heart, lift your spirit, and enrich your life. This book, slices of life of those, who stop and honor what still matters in this country, the commonality and wonder of the human spirit.

Some of the stories are several pages long and others like Lynn Ruth Miller's Sing Your Song, is only two pages long, yet packs a powerful message of perseverance. The Crying Chair by May Marcia Lee Norwood tells of a teacher's compassion for her students' need to express their pain and The Lady in the Blue Dress by Edie Scher is a testament to the power of faith.

This book is by my bed and I indulge myself in one of the stories several times a week and promises to be a mainstay in my collection of inspirational reading. I applaud the editor, Colleen Sell for her vision for the Cup of Comfort concept and the Adams Media Corporation for believing in it, which has branched into a series. There is also A Cup of Comfort for Friends and the upcoming A Cup of Comfort Cookbook and A Cup of Comfort for Women of which I am proud to be a contributor.

Boy, talk about timely books! A Cup of Comfort is what this nation needs to heal. I picked up this book and couldn't stop reading. The stories are truely amazing! It is in times like these that we need a pick me up and this is a cup we acan all share. I was particularly impressed with The Lady in the Blue Dress by Edie Scher and Crossing Paths by Jamie D'Antoni. These stories show that anything can happen if you are open to the possiblities. I hope to see more from these two ladies...they are very talented and have a good grasp on storytelling. I would recommend this book to everyone!

Lucado is a unique writer of the evangelistic angle. In A Gentle Thunder he uses the gospel of John as a touchstone and each of his vignettes describes God's voice and our response in a unique way. He uses the ordinary and the unusual to creatively demonstrate God's faithfulness. Wile E. Coyote, hummingbirds, Cinderella, New Yorkers and a waiter/cat are a few of the unique characters that Lucado portrays in this book. Lucado's vintage Bible character portrayals, some rare moments he experienced as a missionary in Brazil, and the metaphysical side of a wedding reception with no cake makes the ancient come alive and the everyday become exciting. Lucado poignantly portrays how God will do whatever it takes to get our attention, but leaves the choice to us. That's the message of this book: the relentless pursuit of God. Despite the use of scripture and religious overtones, many people have been helped by Lucado's writing.

In this Book you will find God does whatever it takes to get our attention, alot of times not in the way we would expect Him to, but He does whatever it takes to pull us back to Him over and over again.

We may never understand what it is exactly He is doing with us, but we can trust His Heart and trust Him to do what is right.

If you need a reminder of His Love and an assurance of His strength and an example of His Kindness then this is the Book for you!

You will be blessed with His Gentle Thunder!

Max Lucado has written a devotional masterpiece that can attract the attention of any philosopher who is searching for the meaning of life or give insight to any clergyman who is in search of material that can supplement his or her preparation for a thought-provoking sermon.

I am generally wary of those who attempt to use individual biblical quotes to postulate their personal opinions and then formulate themes that they call daily devotions. In other words, beware of those who attempt to use scripture to "fit" their points-of-view.

Lucado, on the other hand, does the opposite. He presents a variety of stories that range from moral tales to historical accounts of triumphs and disasters, all of which parallel the fables and parables of ancient times, and while reading each chapter, one should conclude that if there is any point that Lucado is trying to get across, it is not for his own personal benefit; instead, it is this: we fail to realize that there are so many modern-day events in our world that make the works of the gospel writers just as relevant today as they were in the past and that many of these happenings brought to life are just as applicable to the so-called ordinary individual as they are to the famous figures who headline our daily news.

Political Competence 101
Helpful Votes: 4 out of 5 total.
Review Date: 2006-02-17
Political savvy can shape your career in any organization. Most "politically competent" people developed their talent through extensive experience. Such competence is a difficult skill to transmit through book learning. That sums up the major shortcoming of Samuel B. Bacharach's book. On the plus side, he provides matrices and enumerates the characteristics you need to build coalitions. He also provides extensive examples, accounting for nearly half the book, to illustrate politically wise tactics. Yet, Bacharach's tone is occasionally professorial. His ideas about coalition building are certainly applicable, but people who are truly politically savvy will not need this book. We recommend it primarily for novices - those who want to be wise corporate politicians, but aren't yet. If you are higher up the ladder, you should already have developed your political competence - although you may appreciate the refresher course.

Samuel Bacharach's book is absolutely fantastic. Although it is excelent for anyone in business, it should be of particuar interest for the businesswoman.

I am sure that I am not the only woman who has sadly discovered that, as a woman, it is especially difficult to get your ideas implemented. It is hard to believe that in the 21st century, so many of us find ourselves fighting that same old battle to be taken seriously. But don't throw in the towel! There is help between the covers of this book. Professor Bacharach gives detailed strategies that anyone can grasp in order to change the status quo. I promise that you too can learn to "get them on your side."

This is a book that belongs in everyones library, whether you work in corporate America, are organizing a new project for the PTA, or anything in between.

Cornelius Tacitus knows perfectly what the cardinal human characteristic is: `From time immemorial, man has had an instinctive love of power.' And, `the reward for virtue was inevitable death.'
His book is a mighty illustration of the ruthless fight for the top spot: emperor. The ambitious and the wealthy fight one another without mercy. `The truth is that revolution and strife put tremendous power into the hands of evil men.' The vanquished are brutally slain.
For Tacitus, the most important factors in the power struggle are money (`money was the sinews of civil war') and control of the military (`the lesson that an army can create an emperor'). If you could `reward` your soldiers, you could win. However, the legions were not interested in war itself only in looting, plundering, raping and enslaving. `The men wanted campaign and set battles, as the prizes here were more attractive than their normal pay.' The victims were innocent peasants, women and children.
Overall, `Italy found it hard to put up with such hordes of infantry and cavalry, and with violence, financial loss and acts of lawlessness.'

While the `Annals' contain more human touch, the `Histories' are nearly completely centered on military, diplomatic and tactical manoeuvres, followed by terrifying and merciless violence after the battles (`the fury of the soldiers').

This for mankind severe and pessimistic book is a must read for all those interested in the lessons of history and for lovers of great classical literature.

Every now and then a pivotal moment in history is witnessed and recorded by a master communicator. The mid-first century of Rome was such a time and Tacitus was such a communicator. The Histories will forever be a benchmark of good history with its observations on human nature and behaviour along with their impact on history. The historian will do well to read Tacitus not just for the historical lessons but for his approach to history as a record of human activity. While observing and commenting on the human element in history, Tacitus avoids making moral judgements and remains as objective as possible in the midst of turmoil, wars, and rumors of wars. His beloved nation and people were suffering under the barbarity of fratricidal war yet he remains above the madness and records the events with passion tempered with objectivity. His example is one that has remained difficult for others to follow.

A word on this translation in particular - I found Mr. Wellesley's translation very readable and poetic. He seems to have captured the literature value of the text as well as the content. Well done.

Tacitus Histories deals with the turbulent year 69AD the year of four emperors. Tacitus eye for detail which allows us to understand the personalities of Galba, Otho, Vitellius and Vespatian and their motivations and ambitions in this trully chaotic time in Rome's history. The sinister role of the Praetorians in these events is faithfully accounted. I found I could not put it down! Very readable compared to the Annals. The translation is first rate. The work is also supported by numerous foot notes and maps. Anyone interested in this period of Roman history must read this book.

corrupting effects of power
Helpful Votes: 8 out of 9 total.
Review Date: 2004-02-03
Reading Tacitus' Annals I oft remembered Thucydides' account of the Peleponnesian wars. An important theme of the latter work was the corrupting effects of prolonged war on the morals and intellect of the Athenian people, who were ultimately degraded so much that they voted the destruction of the people of a small island just because they had chosen to remain neutral. Tacitus, on the other hand, seems to have dedicated himself in this work to examining the corrupting effects of absolutism on the Roman people after the fall of the Republic. He shows how absolute power brought out the worst traits in the character of rulers like Tiberius and Nero, who grew more and more tyrannical with every year on the throne, and how members of the illustruous Roman senate and other sections of the Roman political society turned into a horde of spineless sycophants, informers and debauches. There were still a few honourable individuals, but as Tacitus shows in an endless series of judicial and non-judicial murders, most of these paid the price of sticking to the ancient traditions of liberty and honour with their lives. Tacitus also deals at length with the relations of the Romans with the subject peo-ples. I may be wrong here, but it seems to me that in such passages Tacitus draws a parallels between the fate of these enslaved peoples and that of the enslaved Roman people -the first a slave to the Romans, the second a slave to the emperor and his bureaucracy made up of ex-slaves. Many subject peoples rebelled and some like the Cherusci under Arminius (towards whom he does not seem averse at all) could successfully preserve their liberty against the in-trusion of the Romans. Those Romans who dared defy the tyrant on the other hand, and especially those who could wisely remain independent and yet stay alive, were far fewer, Tacitus seems to imply. Insofar as it demonstrates how closely liberty (including liberty of thought) and morals are intertwined, this work is still relevant today as a central work of liberal humanism.
