Correction to Hakim's reviewReview Date: 2006-06-02
Hakim also said, "At any rate, it seems that Barcellos misunderstands Owen as well..." I took Sinclair Ferguson's view of Owen on the function of the Old Covenant as it relates to the Covenants of Works and Grace. I sent an email to Dr. Ferguson before going into print asking if I had understood him and Owen correctly. He assured me that I had. If you check the footnotes, it's all there.
I recommend that folks read the book for themselves.
Exegetical - Sound - Insightful work on Covenantal TheologyReview Date: 2006-12-29
The author holds that "the mystery of the gospel cannot be thoroughly apprehended by us without some good understanding of the economy of the law and also of the state of things before the law." His theological starting point is that God's transactions with men are federal or covenantal in nature. Therefore, Coxe starts with defining the nature of biblical covenants. Next, he exegetically handles God's covenantal transactions with Adam, Noah, and Abraham. He spends significant space on the relationship of covenantal promises of God to Abraham's spiritual seed and his physical seed. This is the key to the value of Coxe's book. The proper relationship between the spiritual and physical seed of Abraham is vital to a biblical understanding of the correspondence of Israel and the church, baptism and circumcision, law and grace, and defines the nature of salvation and eschatology.
Coxe's work is not the final word on Covenantal theology but it does proffer a vital and significant contribution to it. Coxe himself intended to write an additional volume but believed that John Owen's work on Hebrews 8:6-13 preempted the need. Thankfully, the editors of this present edition of Coxe's work have put Owen's work under the same cover. Together, the reader has a rich explanation and defense of Covenantal theology.
Together, Coxe and Owen could not be more relevant in addressing key contemporary theological issues such as the New Perspective on Paul, Federal Vision Theology and the so-called New Covenant Theology. This edition offers a wonderfully written appendix by Richard Barcellos entitled "John Owen and New Covenant Theology." Barcellos cogently defends Owen's position on the genuine distinctions between the Old and New Covenants from being pirated by those holding to the so-called New Covenant Theology.
A must read for all Baptist who are committed to Covenantal theology. Covenantal theologians of the infant-baptistic persuasion camp will find Coxe's work challenging in a constructive way - more than you might think.
Agree or disagree with Coxe, all those holding to Covenantal theology will be greatly enriched by a careful reading of this edition of his "Covenant Theology from Adam to Christ".

Best Book I Ever ReadReview Date: 2005-01-25
Opposites attract....
After too many disasters, Jazz Blum has sworn off love for good. Not that offbeat, beautiful Jazz plans to stay home nights-she just doesn't want to get serious. So when Peters Ashcroft, the straitlaced society boy of Governor's High, asks her to a fancy ball. Jazz accepts. She thinks there's no way she could ever get serious about a guy like Peters.
But Jazz is in for a surpirse. Underneath his buttoned-down exterior, Peters is the funniest, most adorable guy she's ever met. Suddenly it's not the one-night fling Jazz had planned on. But just when Jazz is ready to break her vow and get serious. Peters cools off. Is Jazz headed for heartbreak all over again?
My review:
his book reminds me of an old 80's movie. It's funny, heart warming, and true to life. Anyone who is lucky enough to find a copy of this book, will be happy.

St. Patrick's Hymn: Celtic prayers: Simple and DeepReview Date: 2003-12-02
I bind unto myself today...Review Date: 2005-04-15
Adam begins with a brief reflection on St. Patrick himself; patron saint of Ireland, his first experiences in Ireland were as a kidnapped slave. When he was 16, he was taken to Ireland and spent six years there, often working as a shepherd. He returned home to Britain, but as Adam says, 'Ireland had already captured him in other ways.' He had dreams that the people of Ireland were calling him to return, and after his education and ordination, he returned as a missionary bishop to the people of Ireland, who have been resolutely Christian ever since.
However, Patrick's ministry was not universally accepted and unopposed at the start. The story of his fire burning at Tara during a time when the Druidic festivals of the time would call for all fires to be extinguished is well known; also, one of the Irish kings was warned against Patrick, who was proclaimed a 'falsifier who is deceiving everyone.' When the army plotted to attack Patrick, he escaped by being seen as a deer (local legends proclaimed that Patrick had been changed into a deer). Tradition states that the prayer/hymn text, 'The Deer's Cry', also known as St. Patrick's Breastplate, was composed during this journey.
This famous prayer or hymn is most likely dated several centuries after Patrick. It is oft translated and reworked; Adam includes two translations of the text here (one by Kuno Meyer, and one by Mrs. C.F. Alexander). Adam then uses lines from the text as headings for his meditations, prayers and exercises. Each meditation (there are eleven in all) each derives from a single line of affirmation - 'I arise today' - or through an entire section of the text - 'Christ with me, Christ before me, Christ behind me, Christ in me,....' After each section, Adam leads the reader through a meditative exercise, which can involve silence, recitation, movement, and more. For example, the exercises associated with the first meditation, 'Strength through faith', begins with a silence reflection upon the word 'In the Beginning, GOD', follows through to a practice of the Caim (a kind of physical centering prayer, and concludes with the 5-P exercise (Pause, Presence, Picture, Ponder, Promise).
There are Celtic-inspired line art drawings throughout the text, including images from nature, hagiography, and religious symbolism. There are notes in the back for references, but these are used sparingly throughout the text, very unobtrusively.
This is a book that could be read quickly, but that would be to lose the subtle spirit contained within. Each meditation and practice deserves careful attention and time. This makes an excellent gift for those interested in prayer practices and Celtic spirituality. It is also a gift to oneself, a wonderful way of reconnecting with timeless spirit.

Recipes for the Soul and SpiritReview Date: 2002-11-27
I had the pleasure of hearing Lynn Ruth Miller's humorous story about her mother's Hanukkah blintzes at a reading in Oakland where I was also on the panel as a contributor to another book in the Cup of Comfort series. So much goes into the preparation of food than just ingredients. These recipes reflect the history, family lore, adventures, culture and of course the doses of love that are necessities in good food.
My daughter was flipping through the book checking out recipes for Thanksgiving and was constantly reading out loud the anecdotes and heartfelt stories. Dutch Breakfast Bread and Abuelita's Rice Pudding are just two examples of the richness of recipes and stories in this contribution. These recipes offer a pinch of faith, a dash of strength, a tablespoon of love and a cup of comfort, a gift to America.
