I have had this book since I was about ten years old and it never gets old!! There are so many random facts in here that you can always learn something new. How did Houdini escape? Howcome lightbulbs are so strong? How do they analyze the handwriting of kidnapers? How do people fake UFO sightings? It really is incredible - a must for every inquisitive kid (or adult) on your gift list!

Plain and simple: This book is a must for every human being that can read. Either for rainy Sunday afternoons or for a bathroom book. Get this book!!!

I first saw this book at a friend's house and really enjoyed looking at it. Even children who are not able to read yet can learn lots of things just by looking at the pictures. It tells about everything from the ball in a ball-point pen, to how people figure out what the speed-limit should be for cars on high-ways, etc. I would encourage anyone who likes to learn about different things to pick up this book and give it a try!

Although some might call this book a failed prophecy (as indeed some have called Orwell's "1984"), this was a warning of what MIGHT happen, at the height of the Cold War, if certain philosophies gained control of the government. Recommended!

I've owned an original 1986 copy of this book for about 2 years and continue to read its engaging account of an oppressed America and one woman's fight to reclaim her country from Communist takeover. Astutely detailed, fictional accounts of worldwide events and characters give this book an energetic pace drawing the reader on to read more and more. Anyone lucky enough to find a copy of this book should be pleasantly surprised and relieved its harrowing story never came to be.

I realize that this book is out of print, my copy was from the 1986 publishing. I have found it to be one of the most entertaining books I have read. It is one of the few books of this nature I have recommended to outsiders to read. I have even lent my copy out which is something I never do. The story is as old as time and like so many in that catagory you never get tired of them. The hero in this story turns out to be a woman and even by her thoughts not one you would expect. The story is well written and held my attention (every time I have read it). Even though you may feel you know what is going to happen (it dosen't always)it is still a surprise. All those I have lent this book to have enjoyed it as much as I have. If you can find a copy get it and read it you will not be disappointed.

This is a greatly written book. For all Thor's sense of humor and eye for the paradox often shines through. We hear a lot about his obstacles getting his travel adventures accepted in scientific circles as real research and also get a side of Thor indicating that he is a very determined man. We hear about his romantic life and philosophy about he important things in life. A great book that will teach you not only about geography and archeology but will make you laugh and think deeper about life.

All this author's books are GREAT reads! If you are a city dweller you will especially appreciate his adventures as he asks the question- "Were we meant to live in jungles made of plants or concrete?

Eric, Julie and Neal need to go back to |Droon because the ancient beast called Krog is destroying villages. But is there a secret to the beast? You have to read it to find out. I hope you do.

The story begins when Eric, Julie, and Neal are in art class. New kinds of sparks come out of Eric's fingers. They are silver. They go to Droon and meet Keeah. Keeah tells them about an evil monster named Krog. The knights of the silver snow are with Keeah. One of the knights, Rolf, goes with the kids to the ice caves of Krog to stop Krog from destroying Droon cities. They meet the Ice Man. Neal says something mean and the Ice Man asks him three questions. He gets the first two right but the last one is math and he gets it wrong. This gets the Ice Man angry and Rolf and the Ice Man fall into a giant crack. The kids and Keeah go on without Rolf. The kids see an ice palace. They go in and they find magic food. The food makes them go to sleep. Before Eric goes to sleep he shoots the ceiling with the sparks from his fingers and snow falls in the palace. The snow wakes everybody up and they find the Ice Caves of Krog. Krog defeats everybody but Eric. Krog tells Eric he has two weaknesses. Read the book to find out what his weaknesses are and the true story of Krog! This was a great book.

In the now #20th edition of the Droon series, Eric, Julie, Neil and Keeah find that there are now some new problems in Droon. A new snowman seems to have woken up for his deep slumber and is destroying villages all over Droon. It turns our this snowman, named Murn, is not at all a happy camper, and to stop him the kids have to journey up north to the Ice Caves of Krog. The kids have quite a few adventures including finding the tricky cave entrance, but nothing prepares them for the surprise of seeing Murn...

I have to admit I am a freshman in high school, but I have been reading Droon since I was ten. I know these types of books are way out of my reading level, but they are so magical that you really do feel sucked into Keeah's world. Little kids will love this book, and it is a great way to start your children on chapter books. A must-read!

As a self-tempting male having just finished college, I found myself nostalgic for my glory days by about page 3. I enjoyed every Casanovian characteristic that the young Quibley displayed. I chuckled at his endearing narcissism and identified well with his one track mind hell-bent on the conquest of all that is female--somewhat reminiscent of Antony's pursuit of Cleopatra, but to the fifth power. If Stern's debut has one shortcoming, it's the book's length; I would have loved a few more lurid chapters. All in all, 5 big stars for a novella that packs punch after mean punch.

A few hours with Adam Stern's novella, The Insatiable Man, and I now understand what men really want. I'm not that young, and am the mother of three boys, but I thought I "got it!" With his Salingeresque style and hilarious wit, Stern captures the mind of the well-meaning, yet duplicitous young man in search of, well, non-stop fun; and this book is, well, non-stop fun! Stern's story telling skills are impressive. Sit back, look back and enjoy.

Add a star if you've ever had the best sex of your life with the best girlfriend of your life and yet you still can't stop flirting with the girl behind the counter at the bookstore.

I think every review book I've read (read a lot, I'm paranoid and a slow learner) has some good points and some weaknesses, but this book and series are very good. It taught me to think about the material and explained it in a way that helped my overall understanding, which the boards are [supposed to be] after. I still had to guess on what seemed like a ton of questions and there's always a new twist they can throw in to make a hard question about a topic you thought you knew, but this series prepared me better than I needed to be - I went up 20 points compared to step 1 and think this book had the biggest role to play in my score improvement. What more can you ask for from a review source?

Great series of case-based review - I strongly recommend all the books in this series after using them before my Step 2 exam. Each volume is short and sweet to keep you from freaking out about all the stuff you don't know that you should...

Explanations are precise and written in easy-to-understand language, with difficult concepts and terms always explained or phrased in a way that makes sense. Lots of photos and x-rays that helped with the figures on the test.

If you like case-based reviews (which is how 70% of my exam questions were), this is a great series. Great cases with superb, to-the-point explanations that tell you the high-yield stuff and omit the fluff. Easy to read, lots of pictures and figures, jam packed full of pearls. Definitely check this one out.

This is a great book - I recommend it for beginning to intermediate users. It provides both a working knowledge, as well as some social information as well. Good for the student that already thinks they know it all but doesn't.

Excellent book. Current and up to date. This book was required reading for a three unit class that I am currently taking. I was surprised at how current the information is. Buy this book if you would like to learn more about the Internet.

If you are looking for a GREAT introduction to the World Wide Web and the Internet, then this is the book for you! No other book on the market compares in content. It is informative and has great examples and exercises. Even those who have been using this Internet for years will find that this book will serve to round out your understanding as well as give you some excellent tips for using the Internet in new ways! Don't take my word for it, check it out!

I purchased this book upon recommendation from an internet buddy. I'm currently taking my first topology course (at an undergraduate level) and using Topology (2nd Edition) as the assigned text. I understand that Munkres is the "standard", and I don't have any real complaints about it, but I wanted something else to help broaden my understanding, and Adams and Franzosa did a great job in providing a book that does exactly that.

While Munkres presents everything from a very mathematically rigorous point of view, it took me several chapters before I really understood what we were talking about in a sense other than developing a branch of mathematics. It's great to follow theorems and definitions, but Munkres left me sort of mystified as to why we were doing this for quite some time. On the other hand, this book is all about the why and the how.

Applications of topology are presented from the get-go, usually as sections appended to the chapter that introduces the concept, so that the applications are more of an optional exploration than a focus. This really helps to motivate the reader and highlight the important concepts; it also makes it much easier to explain to a curious friend what exactly it is that you're doing.

Rigorous definitions and theorems are almost always accompanied by a plainer explanation of what exactly we're working with and why, and some of the diagrams, especially in the sections on quotient maps, are invaluable in visualizing what's going on and keeping track of what's a subset of what being mapped to where. This book does a good professor's job--instead of merely regurgitating theory and leaving you to put the pieces together, it's an excellent guide to a deeper understanding of the subject.

The exercises are plentiful and well-chosen. The authors gently guide the reader along the right path when asking for a new proof, and there are enough examples given to help the reader broaden her thinking to new approaches. The last several chapters go into more detail about specific topics that take the general concepts in advanced directions; this structure avoids breaking the flow of information. Overall, the text is very well-organized, and the authors have painstakingly highlighted suggested paths through the material.

This is, however, an introductory text, and it sticks mostly to point-set topology. There are a few results that I was surprised to see missing, and a few concepts that were skipped entirely (for instance, the distinction between the product topology and the box topology--the box topology is not discussed). For my purposes, it everything I could hope for--a patient discussion that expanded and clarified the topics I've already encountered using Munkres. As an introductory text, I couldn't imagine anything better.

I was a student of Dr. Franzosa when this book was nothing more than a word document. I've been priveledged to watch it grow, draft by draft, into the complete text that it is now. As a student of topology I find this text refreshing, as the applications bring the theorems and lemmas and corollaries to life. Its written clearly, well illustrated and just plain fun. Although this book is a great introduction to pure and applied topology with several examples, figures and exercises making it is a good option for self-learning, I believe that the main differential of this book is the applied part of the book where one may find applications in economics, dynamical systems, graph theory etc. Furthermore, in the preface of the book, the author shows the minimal path that you have to follow in order to have the minimal necessary knowledge to understand the applied part of the book.

On the other hand, if you are interested only in pure topology, due to the difference of price I suggest you the Theodore W. Gamelin and Robert Everist Greene's Introduction to Topology, which is also a very nice book and very much cheaper.

Richard Adams presents folk tales to the reader in a clever way.
Ths book is hard to find in good condition, but if you can get a hold of one, I highly recommend purchasing it!
It is called 'The Unbroken Web and 'The Iron Wolf and other stories'. I am a fan of Richard Adam's work, and so I treasure this book like I do all of his.
The illustrations are unique and wonderful. The introduction is beautiful and changes the way I percieve stories. The first story 'Cat in the Sea' is great! It explains why cats hate water.

This book also includes 'The Legend of te Tuna' which is also called 'The giant eel'.

Richard Adams unique collection of fables is intriguing and thought-provoking...to see ourselves and others in each is a rewarding challenge -- well worth the effort! Also, I must mention that the illustrations in this book are absolutely exquisite -- something the previous reviewer made no mention -- a rarity in this day and age of simple graphics and line drawings.

This Book is not a story, but a collection of some interesting and little-known fairy tales. Some of them are good, some of them not so, but in general, this is a very good book and worth reading. As you can see, it is out of print in English, but it is still available in German (Der Eiserne Wolf: phantastische Märchen).
