I stumbled across this book about 6 years ago in a sales rack at Crown Books in Topanga Canyon, California. There were only three left, so I picked one up and paid about $11 for it. How I wish I had snatched all three, because it is now impossible to get and some dealers are asking a fortune for used versions (Ron offers the best price and his are new!). One of a kind posters, many that are different versions from the same film and sometimes foreign versions, are artfully arranged and beautifully reprinted throughout this book. The reader can enjoy the fabulous art again and again, as well as learn quite a bit about the history of film posters, lobby cards and one sheets. Ron's narrative about his love for collecting posters is a treat and he paints a great picture with words of what it was like when he and his friends started out collecting. I urge you to visit Ron's shop on Hollywood Blvd. for a look at some truly classic film posters if you just can't seem to find this great book. What can I say but, "Five Thumbs Up!" (And thanks, Ron, for sharing!)

It is a must for any horror fan. From silent to the 70's it's all in there. There are even some items in his book that are 1 of a kind. Yes, the only specimens left on the planet earth. GRAVEN IMAGES is exactly what it claims to be, 235 pages of the best fantasy and science fiction film art you could possibly imagine and-- beyond! It features beautifully reproduced photos of everything from the common one sheet all the way up to six sheets (that were literally plastered on the sides of buildings to be viewed from car or train) and everything in between including half-sheets, inserts, and lobby cards. It also includes a glossary to define these terms for you in case you are unfamiliar with them. Best of all the items represented aren't simply the American publicity materials, oh no, collector Ron Borst who compiled the book has also chosen to add foreign material chiefly British, French, and Belgian though other countries are represented as well, and some of these posters are absoutely breath-taking.

The book starts with a 15 page forward by Borst (everything is always illustrated) aptly called "The Genesis of a Collector". Among other things Borst's hobby has lead to one of the best known memorabilia shops in Los Angeles. This is followed by the handy-dandy one page glossary, and then by a five page intoduction by the ubiquitous Stephen King that sets the tone for the book which of course is how publicity material, specifically theatrical posters sets up the audiences expectations for the film. It also contains 2 lists, one which is King's list of favorite horror movies as of 1992 and the other his list of favorite horror movie posters as of the same date. Looking at the list I'm assuming that he's referring to American one sheets.

MOVIES (alphabetically)
Alien
Burnt Offerings
The Changling
Curse of the Demond
Dawn of the Dead
Dementia 13
Evil Dead
Pet Semetary
Psycho
Texas Chain saw Massacre

ONE SHEETS
Child's Play2
Curse of the Demon
Earth vs the Flying Saucers
I Was a Teenage Frankenstein
I Was a Teenage Werewolf
Night of the Living Dead
Paper House
Rabid
The She Creature
Them!

The remainder of the book is divided into eras and each era is introduced by a different science fiction writer; The teens and twenties are handled by the late Robert Block author of PSYCHO, the thirties by Ray Bradybury, the fourties by Harlan Ellison, the fifties by Peter Straub, and the sixties by Clive Barker with an afterward entitled "Imagi-Movie Memories 1922--1968" being contributed by Forry Ackerman. Their anectdotes are all well and good, but the real reason to buy this book is the art, and art it is! So many of these images are so beautiful that it hurts to look at them.

The teens and twenties were the high point for this type of poster art in films, but soon it would end, a victim of mass production. Within a few years circus posters, cigar box labels and all the other forms of beautiful lithography of which these early posters were but a part would be gone forever, and by the 1980's almost all theatrical posters would be photographic in nature. Once you've seen the posters reproduced in this book you'll realise just how big a loss that really was. If you get a chance take a look at this gorgeous book--grab it! What you find within its pages will open your eye, especially the work for the silent films that were coming out of Germany such THE CABINET OF DR. CALIGARI and METROPOLIS for the art chosen to sell these films was every bit as exciting an innovative as the films were themselves.

My only criticism of the book is that I would have liked to have seen mention by name of all the artists who had produced these ephemeral masterpieces. I suspect though that the artists, like their work, were disposable. How sad.

The "Handbook of Church Discipline" by Jay Adams is a must for all pastors and lay workers alike. This book will give you clear, detailed information on a greatly overlooked area in our churches today, and yet it is concise enough to refer to at a glance whenever you need to. If you have ever had a disagreement, miscommunication, or unreconciled relationship with someone and wondered what to do, this book will direct you to the Scriptural answers laid out by Jesus Himself. Focusing on Matthew 18:15-17, Dr. Adams tackles an area where, sadly, few dare to tread. He details the process of both informal and formal discipline to give you a working knowledge of this subject to apply in your relationships with family, friends, your church, and unbelievers as well. If you wish to have a dynamic church for our Lord, and personal relationships with others that will reflect your love for God, I challenge you to read this book, search the Scriptures, and apply our Lord's teachings. May your life and ministry be blessed as mine has!

This book should be mandatory in every seminary or pastoral seminar. I also read his original book over 10 years ago and bought this edition because the other one never made it back to me after I loaned it out. The corrections he made were outstanding and makes this book even more valuable.

It is written to cover Matthew 18:15-17 and it is done both biblically and simple in its presentation. There is so much unbiblical understanding in this area that I would recommend every minister to read this book to see how their views lines up.

The highest recommendation I can give is that I have used his material and his triangle of incremental steps in 3 churches and all have become healthier as a result. In one church there was a terrible problem with gossip that had taken over the atmosphere of the church. This teaching not only cleared the problem but no one was lost in the process.

What I especially like is how the congregation/members are empowered and released to care for each other as they become proactive in creating and maintaining healthy,Godly and biblical realtionships.

The most interesting possiblity is how a spouse can utilize this process to better their marriage.

Great instruction

This book is short, yet gives very explicit intructions regarding the biblical mandate and process for the ministry of church discipline which every true church of the living God should be exercising. I highly recommend it for those already involved in this ministry, as a checkup on your activities in this area, and for those who are just realizing that scripture commands His church to carry out this work calling to repentance, restoration and keeping His church pure.

As the mother of three young children - one picky eater, one who can't get enough and one junk-food junky - I was thrilled to find a book written by a nutrition professional that can relate to the challenges of feeding kids. In this easy to read book, nutritionist Elizabeth Ward provides common sense advice on how to feed kids healthy foods based on both sound nutrition science and her experiece feeding her own children. Starting with "preparing for pregnancy," Ward covers topics that all parents want to know about -- breastfeeding, introducing solid foods, helping your child establish eating habits that will ward off chronic disease later in life, "super foods" for kids, food safety and more. I think what I like most is that all the information is presented in a really common sense, guilt-free way, and includes a lot of first hand experiences from mom's also trying to raise healthy kids in a "junk food" world. In my opinion, any book that can help me feed my kids healthfully without adding to the stress of child rearing is worth five stars !

I am going to buy this book as a Baby Shower gift for my cooworker.

Many children's nutrition books offer unrealistic advice. This book, written by a dietitian and parent, is very practical and realistic, and helps parents figure out how to feed their children healthy food without making the dinner table a battle ground. I found the suggestions very helpful, and I plan to make this book my standard baby shower gift for new mothers.

This is not actually the original novel. It's Douglas Adams reading excerpts from each of the novels in the series recorded live at the Almeida Theatre in London before an invited audience. I'd suggest it for the person that already knows all the books in the series and wants to complete their collection. Since it's just the really good bits, it's particularly suited for those times in the car when you're sitting in traffic, your sense of humor is just about nonexistent and you really, really need a good laugh.

The Warren Tavern is so beautifully described by Jim Adams that I felt that I was back there again. The memories for those of us who were part of Jim's wonderfully renovated tavern will always be part of the magic he created in dear old Charlesown. Fond memories, great times, good friends and especially Jim himself made this historic tavern unique. He wrote masterfully of an era and a place that many of us will never forget. Jim proved that he had the style as an author as he had as a person (and friend). A great book.

Jim Adams has created an unforgettable cast of characters in this delightful memoirs of his restoration efforts in Charlestown, Massachusetts, and the colorful people - sinners, scoundrels, and saints - from all walks of life who congregated at the Warren Tavern, the centerpiece of the Thompson Triangle, which he brought back to life from Colonial days. My husband loved learning about the history in which the Warren Tavern figures so prominently - it was originally built in 1780, and named in honor of Charlestown's Revolutionary War hero, Joseph Warren. We both loved the book, and don't hesitate to recommend it.

The Immortal Tavern by Jim Adams is a delightful read. From the first chapter telling the "wine story" right through to "last call", the book is amusing at times, and highly entertaining. Rich in colorful characters, history, politics and witty storytelling, it was reminiscent of Rick's Club in the movie "Casablanca", and the camaraderie found in "Cheers" and "Mash". It made me wish I could pull up a stool and join in the fun!

You could not make these stories up, from the historical renovation of Paul Revere's favorite watering hole through opening day in a tough Irish neighborhood full of characters. The likes of half-price Murphy, Moe the match, Joe Skip, miscellaneous wise guys, politicians and regular folks joined in this odyssey that succeeded all odds. A great read!

Civil War memoirs seem to have taken off since the Ken Burns miniseries aired on PBS. The writings collected in this book provide amazing insight into the day-to-day concerns of an average Army officer, and bring the humanity of a Civil War soldier to the forefront. I've been a Civil War buff my whole life, but I never knew the extent of petty politics and personal grudges that went on until I read this book. Thanks to Greg Acken for helping us walk alongside a soldier as he tramps through one of America's most pivotal conflicts -- and go 'Cats!

The absolutely best description of Civil War life

What I love about this book is that it is so much more than stories about battles. It's an incredibly well written account of the everyday life of an average Civil War soldier. You get a great idea of the politics of rank back then, along with great descriptions of everything from marches, to camping, to of course the battles. It's also amazing to me what he experienced....from the Battle of Fredericksburg, to Gettysburg, and Antietam, there is definetly no lack of detailed battle descriptions too. I guess my favorite part is that he continually asks his brother to not publish his writings and for that reason he writes honestly, and you get a true account of what military life was like back then. I highly recommend this book.

The standard for Civil War memoirs.

In letters to his brother and aunt, Francis Adams Donaldson chronicled his daily experiences during three years in the infantry of the Army of the Potomac. Not intending that his words would find their way into publication, he used his letters home to express his hopes, ventilate his frustrations, and convey to his family some sense of the tedium, grandeur and horror he was experiencing. Presented almost as written, this collection of correspondence brings an honesty and immediacy not found in the often sanitized volumes of other Civil War memoirs. Donaldson was a very young man when he began his service as a volunteer in a Pennsylvania regiment. Enduring the intensity of combat, called upon to lead but not trained as a professional soldier, craving recognition and promotion, his often bitter criticisms of the abilities and personal qualities of his peers and superiors reflect his own inevitable stress and insecurity. There are other collections of such letters from Civil War combatants. What sets this book apart is J. Gregory Acken's remarkable editing and research. Almost every individual and place name mentioned by Donaldson, even if only in passing, is referenced by a footnote. Where available, photographs of the soldiers are provided. You won't be left wondering what happened to these men, whether they survived the wounds which result in their passing from the pages of the memoir, or the course of their careers as they leave the unit; their fate is there in the footnotes. Each chapter is headed by a brief section placing the subsequent letters in historical context. My only criticism of the book comes in these sections, which introduce some jarring redundancies by quoting passages later contained within the letters, themselves. The book comes most alive in the letters describing the battles of Gettysburg and Mills Run. Though it can be a long read at times, you will finish it with the feeling of having shared, in the words of the subtitle, the Civil War experience of Captain Francis Adams Donaldson.

This is an outstanding set of letters by a perceptive officer in the 118th Pennsylvania Infantry. It certainly ranks in the top five of Army of the Potomac letter collections published in the last decade. Donaldson was opinionated, but also intent on description, not chat. He provides excellent narratives of most of the major campaigns, but more importantly he offers insights into ordeals and events often overlooked--everyday struggles lost to history. Gregory Acken has done an outstanding job of introducing, annotating, and editing the missives, offering the reader cues to the important themes that course through the correspondence. For the serious researcher of the Army of the Potomac, this book will become an oft-cited source. For the more casual student, these letters are a vivid, first-rate look at the experience of America's Civil War.

Vaughan has written a super book with much to offer. She essentially presented integral psychology with this book in that it integrates body, emotions, mind and spirit. She uses many of the concepts of Ken Wilber's earlier works, but unlike him, she is not merely a theorist. She has been a psychotherapist for many years, and allows the reader to choose for themselves what is true. Refreshingly, she does not have an agenda like so many writers, except for one to discover who they are at a deep level in their own way. This book is probably the best applied book in transpersonal and integral psychology available. If you have to own only one book, this is that book.

The Inward Arc by Frances Vaughan

This is a book ahead of its time. First published in 1985, with a second edition in 1995, it is a gift of service.

“The Inward Arc” refers not only to the individual’s spiritual journey through states of consciousness, but to the ultimate unity demanding conscious attention to our relationship with all that is. Hence, suffering in all forms, including our environment, is intimately bonded in the maturity of spiritual unity. Its subtitle “Healing in Psychotherapy and Spirituality” aptly describes the three parts – historical, philosophical, and spiritual - that provide a sound foundation for those new to the transpersonal world, the curious, and those long familiar with a variety of transpersonal experiences and thought.

This is a work of powerful authenticity, informed by solid scholarship in comparative religion on the one hand and formal psychology on the other. The two are integrated by the direct spiritual experience of the author as well as the psychospiritual growth she facilitates with her psychotherapy clients. Vaughan herself continues to be a potent force and spokesperson in shaping the visibility of the transpersonal movement and humanistic psychology. Newly discovered by mainstream academic psychology as “positive psychology,” the tenets of the evolution of the human psyche and transcendence beyond ego are offered by Vaughan as a map for the spiritually emerging individual and collective psyche. Here is the confluence of spirituality, psychotherapy, and healing in our time – Vaughan’s aspiration and passion as well as a vision of the possible.

This seminal work is a masterful example of the very principles the author is delineating. With generosity she shares her knowledge, her thoughts, her experience, and her hopes for us as individuals and as a global community. Her liberal use of direct quotations and meticulous credit to colleagues and predecessors, as well as citing original sources, is a model of integrity. This further enhances the credibility and usefulness of the work in its accuracy and access to information.

“The Inward Arc” is thoroughly satisfying and inspiring across multiple levels. Read it. The time is now.

I first read this title while a student of Vaughan at JFKU in 1986. I found it to be most informative and well written book on transpersonal psychology published at that time. Now re-reading it, it is still the best title on the subject. I highly recommend this book to anyone learning the ropes in the field of psychotherapy. My newest book "An Inspirational Guide for the Recovering Soul" compliments Vaughan's work in self-healing and spirituality -- please review at www.drsinor.com.

This book is absolutely incredible! It explains the development of human consciousness in such a comprehensive way that it is a must read for people interested in personal growth from a transpersonal perspective. Many writers have written about transpersonal experiences before but this author brings it all together and presents it as a very nice package. I also found the author's application of these ideas to psychotherapy very interesting and thought provoking. As a psychotherapist using the transpersonal approach, I find this book quite exquisite! The only other book on this topic that I would really recommend is "The Ever-Transcending Spirit" by Toru Sato. Sato explains these ideas in the simplest ways that it makes us think, "Why didn't I understand that before?" He uses the most creative analogies to explain our experiences, including transpersonal ones that you are simply left in awe.

Do you have a NEED to garden, an instinct that simply can't be denied? Do you gain a joy, a tranquility from gardening? And do you long to know of others who share this need and love?
Finally, do you love Ken Druse's other wonderful, wildly beautiful books on same?
"The Passion For Gardening" combines all in a typically (for Druse) gorgeous volume, plus it introduces others for whom gardening is not simply a matter of "plant material" being "installed" by some local garden center. You meet people for whom gardening, in all its aspects(from the Giverney-like selection and placement of the plants to the mundane and often satisfying acts of weeding and soil improvement) is almost a genetic imperative. You meet others for whom gardening is the thing that makes all right with the world.
Even in the dead of Winter, this book is better than three therapy groups or five bottles of pills. It is one you will hold onto till the pages are tattered. It is what that urge to garden is all about.

This book is about people who find gardening as essential as breathing. A passion, for sure, perhaps even fanatical. I know a lot of gardeners who fit into this category and I wouldn't hesitate to include myself as well. Druse's books are always a treat and this one is no exception. He writes about his own garden in New Jersey and how he has developed it since 1995 and his future plans for it. He also profiles ten other gardeners and the spectacular gardens that they have created. Most of these gardens are filled with native plants, trees and shrubs and tropical plants (you won't any flower gardens here). They are all beautiful and the photographs are spectacular, the book is truly a visual feast. He also includes sections with practical advice on transplanting, incorporating water into the garden and garden photography. Perfect for the winter gardener needing their creative juices fired back up before next spring.

Ken Druse is an amazingly gifted writer, photographer and gardener. I would not know what title to give him first. Passion is indeed a word that fits all these talents. In a world were all kinds of technical information is easy to be had, Ken Druse's book goes beyond the world of coffee tables and how to's. This book imbodies what is our gut instincts & passions, It is about responding to our intuition and letting loose with the child within.

The photographs in Druse's books are lessons on their own. I am always tempted to create some new tapestry after looking at them. The photo esay at the end of the book that depicts his own garden through the seasons and the swirling motion of a rain induced flood are my favorite. It is usually from memory that we see our gardens in the clothes of a former season. These images are not only beautifully composed but are great lessons from a seasoned gardener.

I read many a garden book, my sagging bookcases speak to that.Ken's are ones that I often and joyfully return to.

I enjoyed this book more than any "plant" book I have read in years. It is so well written and accompanied with beautiful pictures, I know that I will enjoy revisiting the book many times as I plan my new garden. No matter your garden style, there is something to be found within these pages that will inspire you.

Bravo !!! This book got me a job almost right away. The book clearly cut the crab out and points out directly to the important objectives. The book will also prepared you to all questions that are crucial to be hire. Everyone who seeks a job need to read this book, if you want to be hired. Study the book carefully and most important, excersize and try to imagine what questions that are most likely going to be ask. My personal opinion; it is YOU who is in control in the interview instead of the other person.

If I could give this book a higher rating I would! It should be gold plated.

If I could give this book a higher rating I would! The best job guide that I have ever read.I purchased Knock `Em Dead 1992 by chance. Desperate for a guide that was actually going to help. This is, without a doubt the best book I have ever purchased. This book is responsible for the success of myself and my friends. We fondly refer to it as "The Red Book" (as the issue I purchased had a red cover). I can honestly say that this book is the catalyst for the process that has given me the vast majority of my current salary. It guided me through the entire job seeking process and made the task a simple one. After reading this book the job interviews I attended were simple. At first I thought that the interviewers had read the book because they kept asking me questions from the book (word for word) and, because I had read this book I had the model answer for all of them. Nothing could trip me up. After a few interviews it became very clear that the interviewers had not read this book but the book had essentially "read the interviewers" and supplied the basis for answers to all questions. It would be unfair to mention just the interview section of the book as it provides a full guide from the beginning of the process (leaving) to the end (signing the gold plated contract). I would not like to think about where I would be in my career now if I had not found this book. I am sure that I would be better off than I was at the time of purchase but nowhere near the level that I now enjoy. Martin Yate is a genius, I doubt there has ever been nor will be a book that could outshine this work of art. I have ordered the latest copy of this book and eagerly await its arrival. If you know what's good for you - BUY THIS BOOK NOW

This magazine about Superman bought back a lot of childhood memories. I can still remember when my mother would take me to the Busy B Bookstore and a nice old lady would show me tons of old comics.
This magazine had all kinds of interesting articles about Superman and his impact on popular culture. I highly recommend this magazine and look forward to many more about certain comic characters. There are already several other magazines in the Companion series published by Tomorrow (a terrrific publishing company!). Justice Society and Justice League of America, Teen Titans, Legion of Super-Heroes and a couple of others. Buy them! They are worth reading for the average comic book fan!!

Dang it!

TwoMorrows and Michael Eury did it again! Back Issue Magazine editor Michael Eury first wrote 'Captain Action, the First Action Hero', then he did the 'JLA Companion', NOW he writes the 'Krypton Companion', a comprehensive overview of the Silver-Age Superman. He's gonna make me go broke.

The book features a ton of art, behind the scenes interviews with the creators, and the stories behind your favorite stories (oh, lots of embarassing photos of people with 70s hair, well worth the price).

If you like Superman or Back Issue Magazine, you'll like this book!

If you're a Superman comics fan you probably have a wealth of comics and books about him; so what else could THE KRYPTON COMPANION offer that isn't already elsewhere? Plenty: it explores Superman's editors, offers up new interviews with key illustrators who've achieved fame drawing Superman over the decades, reveals media appearances outside the comic world, and offers up some rare, previously unpublished art work in the process. All this makes THE KRYPTON COMPANION a top pick, offering black and white reproductions complimenting the articles throughout.

The Krypton Companion has been released at just the right time with renewed interest in Superman due to the new Superman film, as well as the release of Superman II: The Donner cut. The Krypton Companion focuses on Superman's career from 1958 to 1986. This was the period that saw the introduction of a rainbow of Kryptonite colors, a bevy of super pets, and many other interesting and outrageous changes to the Man of Steel. The book is broken down into four chapters: 1958 - 1964, 1965 - 1970, 1971 - 1979, and 1980 - 1986.

The first chapter introduces fans to Mort Weisinger, the abrasive editor of Superman in the 50's and 60's and the man largely responsible for developing the Superman mythology, as we know it today. Will Murray pens a marvelous biographical article about Mort, who began his writing career in the pulps of the 1930's on magazines like Thrilling Wonder Stories and Phantom Detective. Weisinger had a very deserved reputation for being hard to work with, especially for those writers and artists under him. Weisinger seemed somewhat embarrassed about his work in comics as he was known to brag often about articles he wrote for more mainstream publications like Reader's Digest and Parade Magazine. Ironic, then, that he will ever be remembered most for his work on Superman. Due in large part to Weisinger, Superman's mythology was heavily influenced by Sci-Fi pulps. A side-by-side comparison even shows where he liberally borrowed covers from the pulps and had artists recreate them as covers for Superman and Action Comics.

Chapter two features a lengthy article written by the late Curt Swan about his 30 plus years of drawing Superman's adventures. Roy Thomas reflects on the tumultuous two weeks he spent in the mid-sixties as Weisinger's assistant before fleeing to Marvel and being accused of being a spy for Stan Lee by an outraged Mort.

Chapter three is filled with fantastic interviews with the likes of writers Cary Bates, Denny O' Neil, Len Wein, Gerry Conway, Marty Pasko, and artists Rich Buckler, Murphy Anderson, and Neal Adams. The interview with Adams is particularly moving as Neal relates how he took up the fight to get Superman creators Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster both money and due creator credit from DC and parent company Warner Bros. At the time the two were nearly destitute and without any legal claim to the character they created. Adams led a PR charge of creators, which eventually forced DC and Warner Bros. to do the right thing.

The final chapter is highlighted by a nearly 30 page roundtable discussion featuring 16 Superman artists, writers, and editors that includes Dan Jurgens, Roy Thomas, MarkWaid, Jerry Ordway, Alex Ross, John Byrne, and Walt Simonson. It's like being in a room with the who's who of comics and just listening to them talk about the world's greatest superhero. What a thrill!

The Krypton Companion is also filled with both classic and unpublished Superman artwork, timelines of events and storylines, unpublished story plots, listings of all of the various Superman 80 Page Giants and 100 Page Sepctaculars, and so much more. It's the kind of book you can sink your teeth into and savor for a long time. Another fantastic book from TwoMorrows Publishing!

The is described as "The Superman Reader for Superman readers". It is intended for people who are serious Superman fans, such as myself. It features interviews with artists and writers who worked on Superman comic books. It is interesting if you are a Superman fan, especially if you're a fan of old time Superman comics. If you aren't a hardcore Superman fan, who probably won't find it interesting at all.
