This is an easy to read, very informative book. I keep mine in the car for those times I am waiting to pick up my kids or sitting in the doctors office. Not only am I refreshing my biblical knowledge when I have a few spare minutes but it helps me remember what's important in our busy, crazy lives. Its also a great conversation starter when you are riding in the car with your kids, especially teenagers who are facing so many difficult choices. A definite "add to you cart"!!!!

In "Beyond Adam & Eve" Marion H. Williams has compiled a remarkable combination of Bible trivia, solid, thought-provoking questions, inspirational verses, important facts, and background material on the Old and New Testaments, the Deuterocanonical books, and the Apocrypha.

Williams writes in concise, easy-to-understand style. The book, as the subtitle suggests, includes: "50 Things You Need To Know Before You Get to Heaven." The format includes 50 questions, followed by suggested summary answers. The material covers the Old Testament timeline from Noah, Abraham, Moses, and David, and traces the history of the nation Israel through Old Testament times.

The book is packed with practical, helpful information for personal or group use and is ideal for family times. The book includes important, often-quoted and well-loved scriptures verses that provide impetus for self-reflection, repentance, and inspiration to live according to God's will and instruction.

The fun facts section is both entertaining and informational. I learned some valuable information about the Tanakh, and the Torah, the Jesus Tree, the Holy Grail, and the Twelve Days of Christmas.

I enjoyed Marion's concept of a "Remedial Heaven School" which prepares the Christian for a quiz at the gates of heaven. A Bible study curriculum is available to supplement the book itself. Participants are referred back to the book for important discoveries on the Apostle's Creed, the Nicene Creed, the Gospels, Epiphany and a myriad of other interesting and important Bible-related subjects This guide can be used to assist the leader in a classroom discussion of the book to encourage further study and review of the material covered. The book is designed for class use for students from 5th grade to adult. The material is designed for an eight-week period and includes suggestions from the book for an opening hymn, a suggested prayer, Bible Search, verses for memorization, and a quiz time, and other Bible learning games.

"Beyond Adam & Eve" is an excellent primer to expand your Bible knowledge and to master the basics of the teaching of Jesus, the parables, the beatitudes, His miracles, and the ministry of the Apostles.

I was amazed at the simplicity and enjoyment I received from Marion's book. It is far more than just Bible trivia. It is a book that should be in every Christian's family library for frequent review and a reaffirmation of commitment to personal faith. I found the book enjoyable, informational, and inspirational. "Beyond Adam & Eve: 50 Things You Need to Know Before You Get to Heaven" is an amazing accomplishment of developing a combination of religion, theology, and history.

Abe Lieberman is a thin, jewish, sixty year old police detective in Chicago; his wife is the president of his synagogue; his daughter, who is on her second marriage is married to a black pathologist and live in the bay area; his grandchildren (from his daughter's first marriage live with him). His partner is a big ex-football playing Irishman named William Hanrahan; who is divorced, a recovering alcoholic (as is his younger son), and is in love with an Asian woman he wants to marry. On the Chicago force they are known as the 'Rabbi and Father Murphy'.

The cases in this book are not of that much interest, but it is the inter- action of Lieberman and his partner with a myriad of characters from multiple cultures that make this a worthwhile read. Kaminsky is great at getting the nuances of speech and the causes behind the actions of his characters to be so honest and real. A worthy addition to the series.

Chicago police officers Abe Lieberman and Bill Hanrahan are partners affectionately dubbed by their peers as the "Rabbi and the Priest". Their latest case involves mob accountant Mickey Gornitz willing to testify against his boss if certain conditions are met. Mickey insists he will only talk with Abe, who was a high school classmate several decades ago. Mickey also demands that his ex-wife and teenage son receive full protection though he has not seem either of them in fifteen years until the informer disappears into the witness protection program. Reluctantly, the Cook County District Attorney's Office agrees.

However, almost immediately after the moment that the Boston cop handed over the former wife and son to Bill, thugs kidnap the duo. When the abduction includes murder, Bill blames himself and not the brass who thought the wife and kid were low priority. As Abe works on a couple of cases and some personal shtick, he tries to help his partner deal with a severe case of depression caused by deep feelings of guilt.

The Abe Lieberman police procedural series is constantly one of the best the sub-genre has to offer. The current tale, THE BIG SILENCE, is an intriguing look at Chicago, various ethnic groups, and relationships. The police investigation is engaging because no great revelation occurs, just hard work. Stuart M. Kaminsky other sleuths (see Rostnikov and Peters) are very good and deserve fan accolades, but clearly neither one holds a candle to the Lieberman books.

What a wonderful book! Virtually every character, small in part or large, transmits that evanescent hint of reality--reality soaked with love, hate, unsavory trade-offs between criminals and cops, between cops and cops (Our televison cops that give most Americans their conception of the police is unrealistically and inordinately distorted--towards the positive, which for us as viewers means cops that are really, really tough with the subtlety of an 100-mile hurricane ripping through a small town. In Law and Order, aren't most criminals one-diminsional, even if depicted favorably, usually when one of the cops or attys falls in love with one of the baddoes. Kaminsky says, "These men are cops; we depend on them, but they are very imperfect, very willing to deal with ruthless, even sadistic criminals, to make the concession that should result in the greater legal and justice good. But putting El Perro's men back on the street is really better than a sharpie who cozens old people. Anyway, Lieberman's novels have improved (the first is the worst and can profitably be skipped, "Lieberman's Folly": but try to read the rest in sequence. Although the plots are fairly discrete, the characters reoccur and we learn more and more about them as we proceed through the books in this series. The characters speak to the heart, mind and imagination that reaches Keatsian goals (if not his genius). This novel has a few main plots--one focussing on Lieberman's partner, his drinking problems, his difficulty in marrying a beautiful Chinese woman (He's big Irish, all the way); another plot strand focusses on Lieberman's difficult daughter, who has basically abandoned her children to Lieberman and his wife--she's remarried, lives in CA, and like so many of us has great difficulty living a life that is not based on depression, obsession with the "cold and analytical"; she blames Lieberman for her problems, but also realizes that his wisdom, his love may be her only chance for happiness (flickers of) and success in marriage with her new black husband. The honesty of the character interactions, their stances and relationships allows us to see characters not as such but as almost Shakespearean, universal, yet individuals that we can palpably touch and, at least partially, understand. This particular novel, of all of Kaminsky's many novels, from several series, sharply, richly, and genuinely etches real people (e.g. Gornitz, Phil Blitzein, Hanranahan, Kearney, Bess, the grandkids and on and on. This novel loves humanity by giving us people and stories, transcending mystery/suspense genre, but working effectively with its requisites, who help us think about life--its joys, its drama, its hypocrisy, its pettiness, and in the case of the dog--a stroke of authorial genious nonpareil--finding a ray of hope in the kindness of a detective, who looks like a weary, somewhat cranky dog (Lieberman), but lights up the lives of so many (sure he's too good to be true) but gives us readers hope that we might make a positive difference and that a life not beset with problems is really not a life at all. Lieberman's insonmia, his slightly acridly ironic humor, his incorrigible daughter and all those criminals, big and small, who make Lieberman's life a means for us to enrich our own. Great book. Also read Russian series and the three Fonesca novels--Kaminsky entertains inexorably, proses beautifully and brings the dectective novel up to a level that only Bill James and Michael Connelly can approximate. Not airline books (Patterson) but still easy to read, and easy to read twice. Read him

A brilliant novel

Dark, yet humorous. The entire Lieberman series is fantastic (I've read them all) but this one is the best. The plots are complex yet they move at breakneck speed. You really get involved in the characters and their lives. This cop series focuses on the minds and lives of the police, rather than focusing on the criminals. This series is tops. The only other writers that come close are Michael Connelly, Dennis Lehane and S.J. Rozan.

Lieberman, a character that lives beyond the page!

I love every single book in the Lieberman series but this one is a particular favorite. As always, Lieberman is both worldly wise and all too human, with weaknesses that make him just that more believable and strangely lovable as well.
This time around, Lieberman and his associate, Hanrahan, are trying to guard the ex-wife and son of a mob informant while juggling the daily frustrations of their own lives. While the mystery will keep your attention, what is equally wonderful, to my mind, are Lieberman and Hanrahan, two guys who jump from the pages in vivid detail. Kaminsky is a wonderful writer and I hope more than mystery buffs discover him. He deserves the attention!

For Those Who Love was a timeless love story that relates to American history. When you read this story, you will not be able to put it down. It tells you about historical events that happened in Boston during Abigail's life and how our country was formed. It was a beautiful story that a person who likes romantic novels could read, or one that a person interested in history could read. I personally fell in love with the Adams'.

"Those Who Love" got me hooked on the saga of John and Abigail Adams. Thiers was a true love match that endured through joy and pain, triumph and trajedy. Stone's sprawling novel follows the pair from thier spirited first meeting, through the hellish American Revolution, and into the turbulent White House years. A fantastic read.

When I first read this book many years ago, I fell in love with John Adams. Stone brought to life not only this most honorable of our founding fathers, and his beloved wife Abigail, but other "characters" of our nation's revolutionary history such as Samuel Adams, a rabble-rouser who was afraid to ride horses. So many intimate details of John and Abigails's life together were brought to this novel that you feel as though you know and love them both. You can't go wrong with this one.

I LOVED this book. Ms. Raven is a woman after my own heart. We have the same color sensibilites and I naturally gravitated towards this book. She is a proponent of using bright, saturated colors and deep, rich colors in the garden,in contrasting groups as opposed to soft pastels and whites-the "wedding colors" as she calls them. She also is fond of using bold, architectural foliage. I couldn't agree with her more. I loved the two page layout of the "floral pallette" she uses, they are all of the colors I love(and I love color). The photographs are beautiful and I really liked how they took photographs of flowers, with their colors and blended the pages into a kind of pallete. I do share the dissapointment of one reviewer-that Ms. Raven's garden is in another zone from mine, and so therefore many of the plants she grows will not survive in my zone 5 Chicago garden. And I don't even think I have ever seen a wallflower here in my life! The text on plant culture is informative and helpful, but not casual reading-it can get a little boring. Use it as reference. The strongest point in this book is the photographs,as it should be. This book is about color in the garden so visual strength would be the only way to go. This book is a great combination fo informative and practical and visual and inspirational. This book really inspired me and I highly reccomend it-now on to order some spring bulbs!

I loved this book- it had beautiful photographs and good descriptions of the plants used. It was helpful to have the seasons and preferred exposure of the plants included in their description. There are also several good sample garden plans. My only disappointment (if it can be so considered) was that many of the featured plants are not hardy in my zone 4 garden (Ms. Raven's garden is in Britain). For anyone who loves contrast in their gardens, this is the book to inspire you!

Are you afraid of too much color in your garden? Do you fall into the trap of conventional landscaping rules of lumping similar colors with each other? Then, take a bold step and challenge your visual senses. The Bold and Brilliant Garden is an invaluable addition to any gardening library. Sarah Raven presents the use of beautiful color combinations in a very naturalistic manner. She outlines the use of different types of plants and color combinations, and she supplies us with a wealth of vibrant color photographs.

I have found this book very inspiring. The pictures are great and the text is full of practical knowledge. Although I am from another zone (Zone 9) I found that the guidelines, the concept in the designs, are so well described that is easy for anyone to adapt them to their own zone. It is not a book for "just copying designs" but to learn how to manage color, texture, scale and develop you own creativity.

I was so thrilled to discover that this book is back in print! My grandmother owned a copy, and I read it over and over again at Halloween when I was a little girl. It is the ultimate history of the Halloween holiday, from ancient times to the early Twentieth Century. The author, Ruth Edna Kelley, was herself just 25 or so when the book was originally published in 1919. I'm not a very good review writer, but I wanted to let anyone who is considering buying this book know that this is a very nice edition, and the cover is just adorable. Everything I remember from childhood is there, except for a few blurry black and white pictures that were never very exciting to begin with. What makes this book great are the words, the accounts of how Halloween was celebrated in various countries, especially the Victorian Era games people played at parties, including about a dozen "tests" for discovering the name or seeing the face of your true love in a vision. I am crazy for anything having to do with this era, and re-reading The Book of Hallowe'en after all these years was like stepping backward in time and really being there. The accounts are so vivid, it really makes you want to just live now the way they did then. With this book, you could accomplish it. Everything you would need to have an authentic Victorian Halloween party today is right here. Best of all, it's just $13.95. I've seen used copies selling on Amazon for over a thousand dollars! I'm just tickled, really! This is a great book!

Hallowe'en aficionado number one right here. Skeleton Jack was based on me. I thought there was nothing I didn't already know about my holiday, but apparently I missed a few things from the turn of the century.

Be prepared though. This book is wonderful as a chunk of history re-printed in the glow of a new millennium, but it's also dated in some ways of thought. That the people of Better Days Books left the text intact instead of editing it is very admirable. You'll be reading history as it was written, not as it has been changed to be.

Sadly, despite being very educational and exciting, Ms. Kelley is a rather poor author. The text is brief on subjects and jumps around considerably. Still an enjoyable read, but I found myself wanting more on subjects that only received a mention.

Overall, for the very reasonable price of this paperback, you can't go wrong. If you're even the slightest bit interested in how Hallowe'en was celebrated in and around the author's time, as well as speculation on customs from long before her time, definitely purchase this book.

This is a great book, but buy the Better Days Books edition

Tara Conrad praised this book very well in her review, so I won't rehash the reasons The Book of Hallowe'en is a great work of folklore and fun. I do want to point out, though, that her review refers to the Better Days Books edition, which is considerably cheaper and has an awesome cover. It's the same book on the inside, so save yourself a few bucks! This review will likely populate to all editions of this book by all publishers, so please note that the Better Days Books edition has "Lulu.com" listed as publisher (I don't know why) on the product page. But you'll know you're there when you see the cover - an adorable Halloween owl sitting atop an old-fashioned, round-eyed jackolantern. And a list price of $13.95!

Attention Wiccans and pagans! The Book of Hallowe'en is probably the best history of the Samhain holiday ever compiled. Ruth Edna Kelley really did her homework, and the literal centuries of folklore gathered in this book, from all over Europe and America, is a priceless source of information every person with a magickal inclination should have in their library.

I have read quite a few books and articles about the unfortuante/sad/?criminal Japanese-American experience during WW II. This book, although it does not add to the historical record per se, includes rich, wonderful pictures from Ansel Adams that bring more visual support to ones' images of how terrible the situation was, but also how strong and resourceful the Japanese-American people were and hopefully still are (just look up the Japanese word "gaman")

A powerful, highly recommended, historically factual book

Born Free And Equal: The Story Of Loyal Japanese Americans is an impressive combination of historic photographs and writings about the Japanese-Americans who were imprisoned in Manzanar, one of ten such relocation camps, as a result of wartime fears regarding possible sabotage by members of the Japanese and Nisei (American-born men and women of Japanese ancestry) living along the American west coast. During the era of World War II, virtually all the American people of Japanese descent in the states of California, Oregon and Washington (most of them citizens), were interned in relocation camps scattered through the Midwest. Born Free And Equal captures memories of this prison community and how the families in it lived in broad, sweeping, black-and-white photographs. Born Free And Equal is a powerful, highly recommended, historically factual book, accurately capturing with poetic realism a dark and controversial aspect of America's WW II effort, which, along with such horrors as the European Holocaust and the Japanese atrocities in the Far East, must never be forgotten.

A fascinating look at this historical tragedy

Review Date: 2002-03-06
In the autumn of 1943, the eminently talented photographer Ansel Adams traveled to the Relocation Center at Manzanar, California. This was one of the camps where the United States government relocated (some would say "imprisoned") the many people of Japanese descent who lived in the western, Military Zone 1, so that they could not assist Imperial Japan in its war against the United States. Among the many people sent to this camp were men, women, children and the elderly; immigrants from Japan, the children (born in the U.S.) of Japanese immigrants, and the those even farther removed from Japan; not to mention a decorated veteran of the Spanish-American War (Seaman 1st Class Harry Sumida of the U.S.S. Indiana).

It was here that Ansel Adams set up his camera, and put a human face on this tragedy. This is his book; the pictures he took, and the text he wrote. Originally published in 1944, this newer edition (published in 2001) contains all of the original photos, several additional photos that Mr. Adams took but didn't include in the original, and several fascinating introductions written by Japanese-Americans.

Considering the topic of this book is something of a cause celebre, one might imagine that this book was something of an anti-American screed. Well, if you thought that, you would be wrong. This book is a very balanced look at what happened, and the people who were caught up in it. Mr. Adams wanted the book to be factual, so both the good aspects and bad aspects are covered. That said, though, the book was something of an expose of what happened, and is not a whitewash. Therefore, if you are looking for a book that will tell you about this historical tragedy, then I highly recommend this book.

The author knows exactly where my son is coming from.At last I have found validation and help. This book is very readable. You can dip into it as it has an index or else read it chapter by chapter. The author also has an informative web-site.I would highly recommend this book.I only wish that the Professionals involved with my son knew what Dr Adam Cox(author) knows and understands!

I loved this book! It was a great tool to remind me to slow down, talk, and communicate with my two sons. Dr. Cox has a wonderful way to meld real-life examples with his parenting suggestions and I've been able to apply these lessons at home. The author's writing style is friendly & accessible which made it a joy to read. Highly recommended.

Very Useful and Interesting Book on Boys' Psychology

Hooray! A smart, energetic, and insightful parenting book. (I've read too many that rely on obvious little snippets such as: "if baby is crying, try comforting him.") This book was more interesting than I expected, and not only discusses important issues but then comes through on the critical part: what to do. The author makes a strong argument for the necessity of developing social and emotional intelligence in our sons, so that they can succeed in contemporary society. According to the author, in past generations, the strong stoic type of man may have been able to remain married and find a job grounded in physical labor, but modern relationships and economies demand a higher level of interpersonal awareness and communication skills. Boys who aren't helped to develop these skills--in ways that do not diminish their sense of masculinity and accomplishment--could be risking social and academic failure. Boys of all ages are discussed, but are divided into three main groups: shy and anxious boys, angry boys, and those who have developmental problems that make communication and relating more difficult. Because the author includes information about all kinds of situations, you might want to use your book as a reference and read the chapters that relate to your own child as it is clearly organized. I read all parts as I found it fascinating and helpful for understanding my son's friends and classmates. There's a particularly good section on dealing with school issues as well.

Reading this book is like taking a course with a great teacher who makes a subject come alive. Many case studies illustrate the author's points, and while there is a lot of depth to the ideas discussed, it's a very personable, approachable read. If you want a new perspective on why your son acts and reacts as he does, as well as practical ways to handle more challenging "boy" moments, read this and be inspired. As Cox says in the epilogue, "raising emotionally healthy boys is not a task for the timid or weak of spirit--it is a job for visionaries, parents who can see the men their sons will become. Parenting our children requires all the energy we can summon. It requires us to keep our wits, look with insight, and forgive ourselves when we make mistakes. It is both a job and a passion. And nothing we will ever do will be as important." Highly recommended.

I highly recommend this book for all parents or caregivers of boys, but especially if you have a boy with learning or attention problems (ADHD). This book not only gives very practical, realistic advice about how to understand your son if he is shy or withdrawn, but also provides great insight into why he may be reluctant to talk and how to bring him out. For many kids with learning disabilities and ADHD, the academic aspect gets focussed on but there can also be social problems at school and in the family. This book addresses both school and family issues, but we found the psychological insights to be extremely helpful in understanding why a fifth-grade boy would be having more trouble in school at this age, and also why he would talk about hobbies and technical things but couldn't tell us why he was getting upset. This book has also helped us understand an older teenager--and know when to step in and when it was fine to give him more space. When communication improves, behavior and respect tend to improve also. We've read some other "self-help" books but this was the first one that seemed to cover all our areas of concern. It's not filled with technical language but it was a "smarter" book than most we've read. Dr. Cox obviously knows about boys and understands what the day to day reality of most families is like. Despite the title, which might imply it's only for "quiet boys," it should be required reading for every parent of boys! We wish we had read this book sooner.

I bought this book more than a decade past at a convention about gifted children. I loved it then and marveled that a boy so young could write such an incredible book, and that there was a publisher so brave and generous to bring it to the public eye. Just recently, January 7, 2003, I revisted this old friend of a book and was even more inspired by its courage and vision than I was all those years ago. I am sure Adam Moore is all grown up now and I pray that he is happy and well. Thank goodness, I now discover via Amazon.com that his terrific book is still available to both kids and adults. This is a great story and one of a boy's triumph over enormous odds and terrible pain to regain his life. Broken Arrow Boy is a triumph of the will and the spirit that people will benefit from reading again and again. This is a book children and their parents should share. Broken Arrow Boy is like an old friend. It calls for many reunions.

This book is incredible to have been written by a young boy. Adam Moore kept a positive attitude through many complications that occured after he fell on a arrow that went into his brain through his eye. He gives details of many medical procedures in a way that is interesting to children. I have read it to second graders every year since I discovered it, and they love it. I use it to encourage them to write about things that happen to them.

Adam's story takes place when we were in 3rd grade in Broken Arrow, Oklahoma. His story touched all the students and we were very impressed with his book. Being a teacher, I like to share stories that touch me with my students. Adam's book is obviously written by a child for children. The students love the fact that they are around the same age Adam was at the time. They also like the idea that a child can actually write a book to be published. It gives them inspiration to be writers themselves.

You know, I have found that being thrust into that world of white (hospitals, nurses, and doctors) has actually increased my quality of life. Sure, I was dealt a rather unfortunate hand, but in my opinion, only recently did I realize this, I am the way I am and I will always be the same person as before. Now, in the minds of children, a character never 'grows up'; however, I have. Now, I write as a 25-year-old associate in college. Since the publication of my book, I have endured over 40+ different surgeries in various parts of my physical body, though my love and compassion for others has not wavered. Hopefully, someday I will be able to fully document my trials and tribulations for anyone interested. For now, I am content in my wheelchair - a result of my most recent surgery - but I am working towards walking again with my cane. For those concerned, my determination shall shine forth and once again I will be the Adam Moore I once was.

Wow! This book has it all! Love, suspense, compassion, mystery, and romance. A must read power packed book with a surprising ending. The characters seem real to life. It was like I realy knew them. The author did an excellent job of character description as well as providing background information to help the reader understand the psyche of the characters. I didn't want the story to end. I found myself wondering what the characters were doing and thinking after the book ended. The book also made me think about my own present relationship. I realized I had some choices of my own to make. This is a powerful book and definitely a must read.

Well written. I like the way the writer describes the characters. You feel as if you really know them. The book is not just another syrupy romance novel. It is full of drama, suspense, a bit of mystery, and kept me wanting to keep reading to see what happened next. I was unable to put it down. The book has a very surprising ending. I hope this author writes a sequel.

As a mature reader, I easily recognize quality. This tale of "love, deceit, and passion" keeps its reader on the edge. Ja Adams executed what I believe to be the true story of so many young women attempting to find meaningful relationships. This book is an easy read with a mind boggling plot. The characters are very personable and I was able to compare and contrast them with people I knew while in college. This is a great novel, and hats off to the author!

Once I picked up this novel I was unable to set it down! The authors use of description, and foreshadowing was wonderful. I was able to see the growth of the characters. My interest was kept as a result of the characters' being unpredictable with a hint of "I know someone like that". This book allowed me to apprectiate the relationships I have been in, and really stresses the importance of family, and the meaning of a true friend. Without hesitation, please treat yourself to the world of Ja Adams!

This book is unlike any other Romance novel I have ever read. I saw some of myself in the main character as far as relationships. This book touched me so to change my mind about a relationship I was in. The characters were real and anyone could identify with at least one of the characters. The situations in the story were so true to life and it kept me laughing. The ending to the story is a definite surprise. I did not want the story to end there. I wanted to know more and how would the Darhling family continue on after the events. If a sequel comes out I will be the first in line to pick it up!! Get this book and read it. You will not be disappointed. I can compare her to writers like Omar Tyree and Terry McMillan.

This is a serious, insightful, and intelligent book with which you'll identify. You will feel less alone in your own personal struggles and challenges as you read the honest and poignant stories and essays in this book. You'll also get great advice and concrete suggestions on how to navigate this stage in your life. But this is not a traditional self-help book. It is a collection of different women's voices portraying with great honesty and sensitivity the various ways they made midlife the CENTER of life, and not the end of it. The risks, adventures, major changes and new directions these women take are amazing! The book is heartening, inspiring and a great read, too.

"Changing Course" is a literary gift to every woman in mid-life. For years, women have been expected to be silent on this journey, this momentous passage from youth and fertility to another place, where mind and body change, expand, contract in so many surprising ways. How welcome it is to have Yitta Halberstam break this silence. How wonderful to listen to eloquent women discussing vital transformations, which, like so many other human experiences from childhood to old age, we (both men and women) are encouraged not to talk about. Momentous passages, like the first day of school, traveling alone to an unknown place, starting a new job, are usually greeted with: "that's part of life;" don't make a big deal about it;" "everyone gets through it, you will too." Ms. Halberstam has created a room where women can share their experiences from youth through middle-age; where they can describe how they are re-learning and re-conceiving bodies and minds they have inhabited for forty and fifty years. The essays in "Changing Course" (including some beautiful ones written by Ms. Halberstam herself) have been edited with discretion and insight. A few of the essays might, possibly, ring truer if they left off that final sentence declaring, in summation, that the experience of aging is valuable, instructional, uplifting. Perhaps they "protest too much." But these are minor criticisms. "Changing Course" is pure, authentic and respectful; a collection of voices into which my own can merge with joy.
