I really liked this book, it seems to be lower on fluff, and higher on substance. This book will help you figure out your style and your personal needs in a relationship. She is also great at assessing your partner's needs and relationship style. This book gives sound advice, while lifting up your spirits.
Often the person that we have a great amount of internal conflict with is the exact person that can help heal wounds from childhood. Unfortunately, we come with different styles, and sometimes we need to adapt for the person that is having the harder time to commit.
She gives clear advice, and ideas on how you can best adapt to your partner without sacrificing your self respect, and dignity. Will this book work for me? It already has in helping me to reframe a past relationship, and hopefully in future ones, I can bypass some of those stumblings I have made in the past. I definate must if you think you should break up, or have broken up and want to get back together.

Unlike the seeming millions of others, "Make up don't break up" is undoubtedly THE most positive book about relationships that I have ever read. So many other authors focus on what's wrong about you or your relationship - spending so much time on the negative or writing in such a superflous fashion that you end up feeling more confused and deflated than when you started!. I can honestly say that you will not feel this way when you read this book by Bonnie Eaker Weil. Not only did Eaker Weil write in a clear and concise way, she wrote with PASSION, INSIGHT and CONVICTION which impressed and moved me considerably. I found the book very easy to read and identified with so many of its points that it only took me 2 days to read it cover to cover! I couldn't put it down!! Whether you're out of love or in love or want to re-ignite the passion, this book WILL show you how. It takes an honest, truthful and engaging approach which will positively change the way you think and behave in your relationship. With that in mind, what are you waiting for?!

In doubt? Read this book first!

This book stresses that unless you work on yourself and come to terms with your own issues, you will encounter similar problems in future relationships. Even if someone great comes along in your life, if you are messed up, the relationship will not work out.

For many people, it is easy to end a relationship for good and find another partner. But this book forces you to question whether doing so is the solution to your relationship problems. Rather than running away from your problems, try to fix it. Then again, the book is not advocating that someone stays in a relationship that is patently destructive/abusive.

Some key things the author advocates: 1. Going back to the past - look at your parents' relationship and see how it has affected your own perceptions of creating loving relationships. Come to terms and even forgive what has been done wrong to you by your parent(s).

2. Temporary break-ups/separations - to shake things up a bit. If there has been a stalemate, spend time apart from your partner to re-evaluate whether the relationship is important enought to work for.

This was the first relationship book that I have bought and I have no regrets. Normally, I stay away from them but this one truly helped me to try to work things out with my boyfriend.

For those who have tried their hand at Deleuze's other works--notably _A Thousand Pleateus_ and _Anti-Oedipus_--the title of my review will completely make sense. In this essay, Deleuze presents an engaging arguement about the development of the Oedipal complex and its relation to masochism. Basically, in the final stage of Freud's Oedipus the son is meant to internalize an identification with the father. In revolt he engages in the masochistic drama--a desperate attempt to re-enter the early stage of identification with the mother. By engaging in Masoch's drama, the woman becomes the subject's mother, and she proceeds to ritualistically beat the father out of the son. After all, dad is the one guilty of forcing the two apart in the first place. But this woman, this actress playing the mother, is certainly not a "sadist"; she herself is a masochist, because masochism has by this point proven to be an entire setting--an entire life--all of the characters, tools, words, rituals and scripted parts involved therein.

Contract, ritual, drama and fear combine to show us complexities of human expressions of violence, care, sexuality and the inter-relation between these three. I do not understand why this book has not recieved as much attention as some of Deleuze's others; its brilliance and accessibility--packaged of course with the eloquent and important _Venus in Furs_--make it well worth your time and money.

This refers to the book, Venus in Furs, not the essay by Deleuze. I loved this book. Not because I'm some psycho who enjoys pain, but because it tastefully deals with an issue that is too often either misrepresented as some libertine taboo or dealt with in a clinical way. Instead you have a story that deals with love in a different way than a typical Danielle Steele romance novel or a "boy meets girl," sappy drugstore paperback. And while it deals with passionate cruelty it, unlike books by Sade, captures unbridled desire and an inflamed heart. It is truly a great work of literature, easily comparable to "The Sorrows of Young Werther" by Goethe.
If you like sappy romance stories, buy something else. If you want an intriguing love story full of the passion of life and the strumming of the stings of emotion, read away.

I am absolutely addicted to The Straight Dope. Every since I got Cecil Adams's first book, I've been unable to put these books down.
This is the second book of collected Straight Dope columns, and I'd have to say it's even better than the first. This one includes more of the humorous exchanges between Cecil Adams and his readers, more columns altogether, and a lot of really bizarre and interesting questions.
Let me just say that immediately after finishing this, I ran to get the third book and started reading it that same day. Not only is this book (the second book) filled with facts, it's also really funny, and well-illustrated. Slug Signorino's pictures are a total riot sometimes.
Unbelievably, this book is now out of print, but fortunately for us, it's still available used. Get it. Now.

He claims to know everything about everything and be able to tell it in a way to make you feel a jerk...

Cecil Adams Straight Dope books are some of the best trivia books out there bar none. While you may not get the answers to the specific questions you are asking you will find answers to things you always wanted to know but never really thought to ask about.

Cecil Adams has been writing his column for the Chicago Reader since 1973 and has been asked every random trivia questions under the sun and rarely is he unable to find the answer. Cecil Adams has a wicked sense of humor that makes his books so much fun to read over and over again.

More Of The Straight Dope is the second book in his series and while it is hard to find, is certainly one of the best of the lot. He answers questions like - what exactly is Mojo? Why does your skin wrinkle in the tub? and so forth.

No one has ever seen the real Cecil Adams and as long as he keeps answering questions and putting out books like this - no one will ever really care (well.... it is probably the last mystery that he will ever solve.)

The first book was great, but played it safe. The more recent books are likewise good, but seem to have been trying a tad too hard. This is the one to start with. Like Miss Manners, Cecil transcends his material or subject matter-- his sharp, witty voice is the real treat here. However, it should also be noted that unlike most authors of trivia and odd-knowledge compendiums, Cecil actually applies Real scholarship to his answers, instead of the usual assortment of second-hand hearsay. A great gift for the smartass on your list...

But of course, Mr. Mischief gets a taste of his own medicine! A hilarious story! I had this book as a child and rebought it as an adult. I still laugh when reading it today at age 27. All of the Mr. Men books are superb, and Mr. Mischief is one of Roger Hargreaves' best works.

Back in college I got a job as a summer janitor at the local elementary school. One of the things I had to do was clean up in the library. I took this time as an opportunity to catch up on some reading... in the form of the Mr. Men series. Mr. Mischief is about a guy who enjoys causing trouble. It makes him laugh. It will make you laugh. But then something happens to him, and he learns a lesson.

I seem to spend my reading time sifting through science fiction or fantasy books to glean a little bit of lesbian content, or even a smattering of sub-text. I had no idea that anyone but Jean Stewart was writing sci-fi with central lesbian characters. Not only does Night Vision focus on a central lesbian character -- who is hilariously funny in a backhanded way -- most of the characters are lesbians and the entire plot turns on that fact. This was an absolutely riveting and satisfying read and I will certainly by looking into other Laura Adams books.

I liked this even more than The Dawning

I read The Dawning first and liked it so much I wanted to read the first book. I liked this book even better. The plot is very tight, the central mystery intriguing and utterly believable when resolved. It is the foundation for everything that unfolds in The Dawning. Rather than everything working out for everyone in the next book we find that everyone has hit one roadblock or another and I liked that dose of reality. I have the feeling that an entirely new world is going to be laid out for us to savor and I can't wait. The message of both books so far is that hope is worth it and people can be better than they are. Given the daily news I can't hear this message enough.

There's no sub-text here! No coy looks or cuddles -- this story is about LESBIANS. It's a great story, too. I really liked Maddy's character. She's very real and funny. All these unbelievable things start happening to her and she really doesn't believe them until she has proof. It's way better than the X Files. Really diverting, I read it in a long night. It was a terrific roller coaster all the way. I laughed a lot, got goosebumps, cried twice and almost had to wake up my girlfriend after some really amazing ... passages. Totally FIVE stars. This should be a movie!

After reading Laura Adams's incredible "Sleight of Hand" I decided I had to read her other books. The only disappointment I had with this book was that it is shorter than Sleight of Hand. In spite of that, the plot was completely executed, with every loose end tied up. Maddy is sardonic and funny, and I believed everything that happened to her was possible. Unlike the X-Files, the story was completely lesbian. The ending was moving and very satisfying. I've never liked romance novels per se, but if the love scenes in this book generate a fraction of the usual heat in what this woman writes, I might have to force myself to read the books under the Kallmaker name.

I'm a believer

Night Vision is a fantastic science fiction story, tightly plotted and convincingly real. When a group of lesbians realize that they are all sharing the same nightmares, their search for answers leads them into the heart of the Mojave Desert and to a woman named Sirena, who is being held captive. The problems they encounter, the talents they all bring to the table forms an inspired story as told by Maddy. Maddy's low expectations from life and love have made her sarcastic and self-deprecating, and her wit is delightful. She doesn't believe that you can find love in nightmares, but as she is convinced, so are we.

The science fiction/fantasy plot seems to be the hallmark of Karin Kallmaker's Laura Adams pseudonym, but the underlying romance and physicality is pure Kallmaker. Only Karin Kallmaker could write an .... with only two people in the room. Crucial to the plot, these scenes nevertheless melt the pages they're printed on.

I'll pick up a romance novel before science fiction or fantasy, but in the case of "Laura Adams" I won't hesitate in the future. Kallmaker/Adams delivers on both levels.

An Extraordinary Photographic Legacy

Review Date: 2005-03-15
Edward Sheriff Curtis dedicated his life's work to documenting the customs and lifeways of the Native American peoples of North America. This extraordinary book includes some of the best photographic examples from Curtis' twenty volume masterpiece, "The North American Indian," one of the most significant representations of traditional indigenous culture ever produced.

Curtis was one of two official photographers for the 1899 Harriman expedition to Alaska.
On his return, he stopped in northern Montana, accompanied by George Bird Grinell, editor of Forest and Stream. There he witnesses the deeply sacred Sundance of the Piegan and Blackfoot tribes, a sight which transformed his life. Grinell said to him at that time, "Take a good look. We're not going to see this kind of thing much longer. It already belongs to the past". It became clear to him then, that he was to record, with pen and camera, the life of the North American Indian.

Beginning in 1900 and continuing over the next thirty years, Edward S. Curtis, sometimes called the "Shadow Catcher" by tribes' people, took over 40,000 photographs and recorded ethnographic information from over eighty American Indian tribal groups, ranging from the Eskimo or Inuit people in the North to the Hopi people of the Southwest. In the end, the work comprised twenty textual volumes and twenty portfolios with over 2,000 illustrations
They are organized by tribes and culture areas, encompassing the Great Plains, Great Basin, Plateau Region, Southwest, California, Pacific Northwest, and Alaska. Featured here are some of the photographer's most impressive pictures, including: seal-hunting Eskimos of Nunivak Island, portraits of three Piegan chiefs on horseback, portraits of Chief Red Cloud, Ogalala Sioux, Geronimo, Chief Joseph, Nez Perce, the magnificent Canon de Chelly, (Navaho), and one of my favorites, Kotsuis and Hohhuq - Nakoaktok - 2 masked performers in a winter dance.

These reproductions are a precious American legacy and an artistic masterpiece worthy of any collection.

I was hoping for a collection of large pictures(i.e. 8x10) but the majority of them are approximately 4x5. It's a wonderful book, but don't expect full sized images. Irregardless it's a great buy for the price. You'll have a hard time finding a collection of pictures as big as this(even if the pictures are small) :)

After reading this book, I realize some of my ordinary behavior must be changed.Having been trained to use counter transferential observations as an important tool, I often recorded my feelings during the sessions in my notes. I now understand this is a serious mistake. Tragically, I now think of my notes as a public document in a potential investigation of my professional practice. I don't like doing it, but I now document my activities around my one client who is potentially suicidal. I feel I have been warned in time, so I now practice with more awareness of potential litigation.

You may think you are protected from wrongful accusations by clients, but this book demonstrates that in most cases you are not. I didn't know anything about such matters until a dear friend and colleague was unjustly accused, and unfortunately didn't have the help of this book. What she went through damaged not only her ability but her desire to continue making her living as a therapist. I stopped doing custody cases after I saw what happened. ON YOUR SIDE is the best -- perhaps the only -- source of step-by-step help for embattled practitioners. I'm grateful to have found it and have been telling every therapist I know. If you find yourself on the spot, this book will explain the intricacies of the system and advise you step-by-step on the best practical (and psychological) ways to defend yourself. But please, don't wait until it happens!

Believe it or not, a real page-turner!

No kidding. Michael Adams has taken very complex technical subject matter and crystallized it in a conversational, easy-to-read manner, injecting personality and humor to make the text thoroughly enjoyable. Very refreshing approach to material that is usually inaccessable to non-engineers. Highly recommended for anyone in the broadband networking arena. Calculus is not a prerequisite!

The opencable industry has great promise and potential. In its early formative stage, various industry participants (hardware and software developers, service providers, cable MSO engineers, etc.) really need and will benefit greatly from this book.

Michael Adams has done a great job of pulling together various information pieces in a coherent framework in an understandable and easy to read manner: history, rationale, process, market and technical details of the OpenCable architecture; current status and future direction. I recommend this book highly.

Although I have been reading a lot of OpenCable documents, there was a wish to have a book that gave the overview and connected the pieces together. That book has now arrived. I can recommend it to all that like to have more knowledge on digital cable and the overview of opencable.

Besides being quite possibly the best small business book I've read in a long time, Outfoxing is just plain FUN to read. Mr. Marks, a "foxy" business owner himself, shares the ways you can identify what kind of small business owner you're dealing with, what their most pressing business needs are, and create a strategy for marketing and communicating with your small business clients. He gives an insider view on the psychology of small business owners which helps with such common issues as getting paid time. He identifies the most common objections small business customers have and how to get around them. I especially loved that he puts an emphasis on creating loyalty and long term partnerships with our customers.

I can't count the number of "aha" moments this book gave me - and I'm supposed to be one of those crafty, seasoned business owners myself. I am going to be using this book as a gift and giveaway for a long time - it's fantastic!

Required reading for anyone who is dealing with small to mid-market companies-- or thinking about entering this marketspace. Gene has worked successfully with both large Fortune companies and the small to mid-market sectors and in this book he discusses the differences and really hones in on the small to mid market space. He then takes it to the next level and gives you the tools you need to be successful in this market space. Gene's writing style makes for a quick, straight-forward read.

I have not enjoyed a business book as much as this since Gerber's E-Myth. This book is very cleverly written and demonstrates a knowledge of small business that can only come through years of experience. Filled with useful information and fun to read.

It takes a fox to know a fox and the author knows his foxes because he's one too. So if you deal with foxes as does the author this is a very entertaining book that will give you a lot of great ideas for being foxier than you are.

Great strategies for success!
