This survey of 100 women marrying after 40 highlights the perspectives of this particular age group on common marriage and relationship issues. Among the best features was the assurance given by the author and women surveyed that 40-plus women interested in marriage have the opportunity and can certainly afford to be choosy. Most interesting to me was that almost all of the women who married for the first time or after being single for a long time experienced some anxiety about sharing space and diminished independence. It was heartening to know that this concern, which I share in the abstract, is common and can be dealt with.

It's so good to read a book that makes me feel good about myself and my chances for finding a good man. There are lots of role models in this book, with lots of good advice on how to meet men and how to handle the special problems of mature relationships. If these women can find good men, so can I!!! The book is very uplifting.

Anyone getting married should read this book. Male or female, first, second, Young or old it doesn't matter, this book should be required reading. This book gives good inside into what to expect from marriage. The 1st person stories are great. There are so many things one never thinks of until its too late. This book points them out. For anyone getting married who is marrying someone with children this book is a must. I am giving copies to 3 different brides to be and 1 groom to be.

A truly honest portrayal of mature relationships!

I purchased this book because one of my friends is depicted in the "Marriage 100" then found myself really drawn to the other women's stories as well. This book is a rare find because of its first-hand, honest portrayal of truly mature relationships! These are women like myself who have "been there, done that" and learned a lot along the way. I found myself wishing that I could sit arouund in a big circle with some of these women, just talking and sharing our ideas about men, relationships, and what makes our lives fulfilling. The next best thing to doing that is reading this book and identifying with so many of the stories therein. I like Carmen Anthony's style, because she truly lets these women's voices be heard. It's a great blend of good reporting and upbeat, worthwhile advice on finding the right kind of man to marry. I have already given this book as gifts to two of my friends and plan to gift it to a few others when their birthdays roll around.

Ever since a 1986 Newsweek article claimed that 40-year-old women have a better chance of being kidnapped by terrorists than finding a husband, many women in their 40s figures that they were fated for singlehood. If you're one of them, this book is here to tell you that's not so.

Rather than writing another "how to get your man" book, author Carmen Anthony put a different twist on that much maligned objec tive by offering some solid advice on the challenges one can fac e4 when marrying later in life.

She starts off with pep talks, telling single women to "get a live and then invite a man into it." And, because it's a vital step in the mating process, there's a chapter on where to find the buys, and quick reviews of the pros and cons of dating services, personals, the bar scene and other st6rategies for meeting men. But she also discusses the importance of being ready to marry, and offers ways to overcome the fears that prevent some women from taking the plunge.

Anthony, who married after the age of 40, doesn t do all the talking. She interv iewed 100 women who ranged in age fro m 40 to 73 when they married. They come from all walks of live and use their own personal stories to aqddress everything from coping with well-intentioned relatives to the b est ways to deal with finances and pre-nuptial agreements and how to successfully fold his and y our children into the picture.

And rather than leaving her readers at the altar, Anthony offers encouragement on the most important aspect of all: the first year of marriage. The women she interviewed struggled with admustment too, and their stories tell those who have been on their own what they can expect when they join their lives with another. Since they've been there, they know that carv ing out personal space, learning to live with, for example, different perceptions of c leanliness, and the age-old problem of communication between the sexes are just some of the road blocks newlyweds of all ages will encopunter.

It's not often (try almost never) that I've seen a self-published book that was well written and professional looking. The only exception in my admittedly limited experience is McClear and Dollak's "Frannie and Pickles," and that was by far Dollak's best.

So, it's a pleasure to enthusiastically recommend William Adams' bilingual "Hate That Thunder/Odio Ese Trueno," illustrated by the talented Tom Stiglich (an honors graduate of the Art Institute of Philadelphia). Look for that exact title at Amazon.Com; it's the bilingual edition that came out about a year after the one on this page (and it'll save you almost a quarter!). "Hate That Thunder/Odio Ese Trueno," has both an English and a Spanish language version of the story; flip the book over vertically and you'll get the other language.

This "Mandy and Andy" book concerns big-eyed, yellow-haired Mandy, who faces a common childhood fear--the loud sound of THUNDER! Author Adams, a former newspaper editor and publisher, shows his writing chops in this first book: The rhymes move the story along with emotion, action, and humor, and they're natural and unforced. What a welcome change to my somewhat jaded eyes! Here's Mandy talking about one thunder coping mechanism:

I know my bed's for sleeping on,
But sometimes I slide under...
I don't know how others feel
But I sure hate that thunder!

Mandy coaches herself through her fear, remembering that 'it's just Mother Nature's sound...a signal that the rain is coming down,' and (as Al Jolson sang many years ago), that rain makes the flowers grow! Talking herself through her fear, Mandy proudly sports an "I'm Brave" button at the conclusion. As mentioned above, flip the book, and you get the story in Spanish.

Tom Stiglich draws big, colorful pictures that recall Saturday morning TV fare. His use of boldly contrasting, electric colors echoes the subject matter, and when Mandy's teddy bear copies her facial expressions--well, the book's target audience of 4 through 8 years old will break out laughing. The pictures and font are large enough for group story time. Whether in the classroom or at home, the story could generate discussions about science and coping with fears.

I think the book could have used a glossary to facilitate language learnin; Mr. Adams informed me that this is planned for all future "Mandy and Andy" books. A CD with the stories read in both Spanish and English is another possibility. The next book in the series (Goin' to the Zoo/Vamos Al Zoologico) is scheduled for a May 2007 release. Be sure to visit website "www.mandyandandybooks.com" for news about upcoming books and appearances, biographies of William Adams (who once co-produced a record, "The Story of Howdy Doody" with Buffalo Bob Smith and others from the original cast!) and Tom Stiglich, and to give feedback. An auspicious beginning for this team!

This book is an excellent read for those of us who continually make stupid relationship decisions. Why do I let myself fall for the same type of person over and over when I know it will only lead to emotional pain for me? This book tells us so much about the ways of getting into these kinds of patterns, how to recognize them, and then how to move on. Everyone should give this book a try, even if you think you've never had any problems.

I really liked this book. I am an avid reader and would recommend adding this book to your must read list. Another book that really impressed me is Psychic Gifts in the Christian Life - Tools to Connect, by Tiffany Snow, pub. 2003. In this time of increasing awareness for the need to help our relationships, workplace, family, self and environment, these two books are at the forefront of giving us the tools to do so - not only by positive reinforcements, but in the case of "Psychic Gifts," showing we have a Divine birthright to access the supernatural in our lives, and how to tap into that. I encourage you to Keep Reading, apply what you learn, and be a force for good in your part of the world.

Healing the Sensitive Heart: How to stop getting hurt, build your inner strength, and find the love you deserve by Debra Mandel, Ph.D.

I thought I would be the worst candidate to get something out of reading this book. I am not one of the sensitive hearted people that Dr. Mandel is referring to, but there are many such people in my life. I may be a magnet for sensitive hearted people. I learned from reading this book that I can help my sensitive hearted friends.

I have friends and relatives whose sensitive hearts have kept them trapped in a fantasy world. They sell themselves short because they have been "taught" that their own feelings do not matter-they exist to serve the will of their parents or some other childhood character. Dr. Mandel shows a path that sensitive-hearted people can follow to become Thrivers. Thrivers enjoy life and give back to the world more than they take. Thrivers have a balance between serving their own needs and responding to the legitimate needs of others.

I recommend this book for the happy soul mates and friends of sensitive hearted people. We can benefit when we understand the likely genesis and resolution of behaviors that are so odd to those of us without sensitive hearts. Thank you Dr. Debra.

As a therapist myself, I am on the look-out for books that would be helpful to my clients. "Healing the Sensitive Heart" is an outstanding resource! Written with clarity, compassion, deep respect for people, and belief in their capacity to change and grow, it resonates with authenticity. It provides an excellent analysis of the inner life and behaviours of the "sensitive-hearted", and clear, effective strategies for restoring balance and achieving a healthy relationship with self and others.
I highly recommend this book!

I think it is great that someone has written a book about how to help our children manage this fact of life but it does not change the fact that teachers are giving too much homework, particularly in elementary school and studies show that there is no correlation between homework and achievement. I would like to see a book written for teachers reminding them that there is more to childhood than homework and that family time and sports and scouts and religious school also have value. Unfortunately, many of our kids are unable to participate because of the load of homework they bring home each night!

Thank you for sharing your wisdom through this book. I often wondered about that gap between passive and reactive and how one finds a comfortable medium. There are also implications on cross cultural communication. As the oldest child of two in an Asian family, the words "no" and "I, me, and mine" were hardly uttered in our household. The expectation is to say yes, watch for everyone's needs before our own--and we better be happy doing it! It's amazing how these learned behaviors find themselves into the workplace. As an adult, saying no can still be difficult but I'm learning to do so honestly, directly and respectfully. Your book has been an epiphany. Thank you.

You will probably guess by my last name that I am related to the author. As a matter of fact, I am his brother. I am also a pastor on the coast of Oregon and I am offering an honest opinion of the book.

Dennis has hit the nail on the head. This concept, in it's simplicity, is amazing in it's scope. You can use this in every area of your life and the results are the same. IT WORKS !! As I communicate with people every day on many different levels, I have found that by following these three simple words, I can always walk away knowing I have communicated clearly.

I will take this one more level. As I spend time communicating with my God, I find that this type of communication is what He desires. There is no profit in playing games with God. Being honest, direct and respectful clears the way for a much stronger relationship.

Keep up the great work Dennis. I know this book will change alot of lives.

Is your communication style effective? Do you communicate in a way that is Honest Direct and Respectful? "Honest Direct Respectful: Three Simple Words That Will Change Your Life" is a small book that packs a big punch. Providing an analysis of the passive - reactive communication continuum, Dennis D. Adams guides the reader through an analysis of their communication style and the implications that their style may have on the many facets of their life.

The book begins with a description of both passive (quiet and reticent/ unresponsive) and reactive (loud and aggressive or demanding and "in your face") and provides examples of how people on the passive and reactive sides of the continuum think. It then follows with a short quiz to test where on the continuum your communication style lies.

Adams then provides examples from his own experience, and the experience of others, to further define passive versus reactive communicators. If you see yourself in both the passive and reactive styles it's possible you're a TOP - Ticked-Off Passive. This occurs when people are passive so long, they are now angry at the world and react in a reactive way, but then feel bad about it (a reaction true reactive types do not experience).

The most effective communication style exists in the middle of the continuum, where communication is not confrontational, and it is not avoidance. It is truthful and it is executed in an Honest Direct Respectful manner.

"Honest Direct Respectful" provides a simple and effective model for successful communication. The ability to communicate effectively has vast implications on your success both personally and professionally. I would highly recommend this resource book for everyone; even those that are not extreme passive or reactive communicators will find value in the suggestions in this book.

I was assigned to teach at the Master Degree class on "Facility Management" subject focusing on Hotel Facility. I have gone through several books regarding hotel design. I think this book is the best of all. Any designer who reads this book back to back will certainly understand the whole concept. It is not only about how to design the hotel as an architecture piece, but the reader will also understand the hospitality business. This book also covers the design and management issues of related topics such as "Restaurant", "Entertainment Venue" in the hotel. It is the 'must have' for all architects who want to design a hotel efficiently. It can also be a good book for anyone who is in the hospitality business and currently in charge of renovating or upgrading the hotel space; or the hotel's representative who need to communicate with architects or interior designer. This book can be the great tool to evaluate the result of the hotel construction project or even to 'correct' it. The tables and formulas for space calculation in this book are easy enough for anyone to understand. This book can be of great use to all building design professionals. It can also be a valuable one for any people who is interested in hotel business.

The work of hotel design and planning is different from other architectural works; it requires an indepth understanding of hotel business. Therefore, the hotel architecture became one of the toughest job for architects. (Another job is the hospital architecture.)

However, this book proposed design guidelines for a hotel fit to the business pattern. First, it explains various types of hotel properties. Second, it shows not only design guidelines for facilities but also planning approach methods for location selecting and size determination. Finally, if you read this book, you can consider efficient management system of the property from the early phase of design.

Among numerous books on hotel architecture, I think this book is the most outstanding resource.

Being a woman, I realize that I'm already at a disadvantage when it comes to buying a car. Not that I'm a woman, but that the approach car dealers use towards women and their attitudes towards women are so uncalled for, so disrespectful and so not acceptable. They assume just because I'm a woman that I don't know what I'm doing or that I need the help of a man to buy a car.

Well, thanks to Pique Lyle and her most incredible and informative book, I learned so much about every aspect of buying, leasing, and financing a car. I was able to walk into the dealership showroom and buy my new car with all the dignity and confidense in the world, and tons of amunition to negotiate the best deal ever. Her book was also extremely funny and so easily read and understood... I would recommend this book to everyone who's in the market for a new automobile, male or female.

I do not feel so vulnerable now when I walk into the showroom. This book is must for anyone thinking about a car purchase. I am so glad it has become part of my auto purchasing research library. I now see all the things I did incorrectly last summer when I first glaced at some models. I also laugh about the crap that the saleperson said to me and the stupid questions he asked. I won't be visiting that dealership again. I'll drive by in my pre-owned Grand Am (baby #2 :)) and wave and I will laugh and thank Pique again.

I read ICND by Cisco Press before. I found this book used on Amazon and bought it just because it was cheap. Now I can not put it down. This book is far better than Cisco Press' ICND. It has about 100 more pages than Cisco's. To me it is worth every minute spent to read this book.
I passed CCNA in December. So, I don't have the exam pressure. I am reading this just for fun and enjoying it.
I strongly recommend it over Cisco's ICND if you intent to take CCNA test.

I just finished reading this book cover to cover and feel very confident about moving on to the next stage of my CCNA preparation, practice tests and simulation! I've been using the CCExam software from CCStudy.com as well as a few other practice tests and am amazed how easy a lot of the questions were after reading this book. Just an indication of how comprehensive this book is.

More important, in my opinion, is the book's "readability"! I'm sure there are numerous books that cover the exact same information as this book yet might not be written in a manner that is clear and simple to understand, especially for Cisco newbies like myself. This book is just a lot of fun to read.

Finally, I really enjoyed the "real world" tone of this title. It isn't written for someone who's bound for the testing center, but rather for someone who needs to apply the knowledge at work in the field. I'm certain that I'll constantly be using this book as a reference even after passing the exam. Very cool.

All in all, I'd like to recommend ICND to the Cisco neophyte who's looking for that great "First Book" to start off his or her Cisco library. I'm really glad I got this book and I'm sure you will be too.

Good luck on your CCNA!

This is not the kind of book that I normally read, but I was intrigued after having the pleasure of meeting the author and hearing him tell some of the stories from the book.

I was not disappointed.

The book was filled with history and stories of the tavern after it's renovations, during a time of change in Charlestown and was both interesting and entertaining in the pictures it painted.

having recently read jim's account of the 5 years i spent working and living over the tavern,i can assure the reader of the accuracy of the many tales spun in this marvelous book. i was personally present when many of these stories unfolded.
jim was a great friend and i loved him dearly. the cast of characters he writes about are numerous and each has their own episode to which the reader will find entertaining.
evnn though it has been over 36 years since the tavern,s rebirth the stories ring true and are a living statement to the fun and merriment
that unfold in this masterful piece.
i strongly recommend this book and know everyone who reads it will be
thrilled with its authenicity.

The Warren Tavern is so beautifully described by Jim Adams that I felt that I was back there again. The memories for those of us who were part of Jim's wonderfully renovated tavern will always be part of the magic he created in dear old Charlesown. Fond memories, great times, good friends and especially Jim himself made this historic tavern unique. He wrote masterfully of an era and a place that many of us will never forget. Jim proved that he had the style as an author as he had as a person (and friend). A great book.

What a treasured journey he took in rebuilding this piece of history. His vivid storytelling made you feel as if you were sitting at the bar with him immersed in his stories full of characters, successes and heartaches. His gift of storytelling is a true testament to his love of history and everyday life.! What an amazing read!!! Sit back and enjoy Jim's treasured journey! Highly recommended.

Jim Adams has created an unforgettable cast of characters in this delightful memoirs of his restoration efforts in Charlestown, Massachusetts, and the colorful people - sinners, scoundrels, and saints - from all walks of life who congregated at the Warren Tavern, the centerpiece of the Thompson Triangle, which he brought back to life from Colonial days. My husband loved learning about the history in which the Warren Tavern figures so prominently - it was originally built in 1780, and named in honor of Charlestown's Revolutionary War hero, Joseph Warren. We both loved the book, and don't hesitate to recommend it.

Enjoy one of the biographies of John Adams, then read this superb book to complete the story of this great man. Mr. Thompson is a fine writer and can be seen on an old CSPAN segment giving a lecture on Adams. His grasp of President Adams's work and his ability to explain it are unmatched.

I am floored! I started reading biographies of John Adams after the musical "1776" piqued my interest in him and have absorbed at least 20 of them since then. I don't know how this 1998 title flew underneath my radar until 2004 but it did ... and I think NOW, after the 2004 election, is the time when every American needs to know what he did for us ... or TRIED to ... including: pointing the way for those of us who CAN to start doing something about the mess we're in now. His insistence on basing our government structure on actual human nature instead of a fantasized ideal of how human nature ought to be may be the only reason we've lasted even this long. Communism went down because it flew in the face of this wisdom. We could be next. Thompson shows that Adams was not only a political theorist, he was a scientifically oriented psychologist. So am I. And I know that he had a handle on psychological reality that exceeds what most modern psychological theorists can lay claim to. He was an Adlerian more than a century before Adler was a gleam in his father's eye. May ALL the Gods bless C. B. Thompson for what he has done ... and may his publisher start doing a better job of getting this book before the public.

I just finished reading C. Bradley Thompson's "John Adams and The Spirit of Liberty," and am in awe; not only of John Adams but of Dr. Thompson's masterful explication of Adams' political thought.

I had no idea what a debt of gratitude I owed to one man, John Adams, who more than any other Founding Father developed and provided the intellectual framework that became the Constitution of the United States. At the very least this book should be required reading for any person who is interested in pursuing a career in politics.

To all of you who are interested in understanding the intellectual founding of this country I urge you to read this book. You won't be able to put it down.

And to C. Bradley Thompson, I salute you and thank you for your efforts in resurrecting the reputation and honor of this great man.

John Adams - American Hero

The most critical period of American history actually occurred after the revolution. The instability of anarchy threatened to make the ideas expressed in Jefferson's Declaration of Independence and the heroic successes of Washington nothing more than a forgotten dream. Another hero, one who would be willing to chronicle all previous forms of government and guide the architects of the constitution in creating something entirely new was what was needed. He was more than just another name on the list of American presidents. That hero was John Adams.
Thank you, C. Bradley Thompson, for this inspirational account of an often overlooked and undervalued intellectual giant among the American John Adams and the Spirit of Liberty by C. Bradley Thompson
founders.

To return America to its original foundation of freedom and individual rights, it is vital that we know the ideas of the men who created that system. This important task will be easier thanks to this book by C. Bradley Thompson. Readers interested in the Founding period and its legacy for our own time will not want to miss this book.
