You look at his life without knowing him, and you'd say he led a charmed, privileged life. Not so. He struggled like the rest of us, but did not let himself become callous, embittered, resentful, and all the other unproductive attitudes that people use as a crutch. He always dwelt on the positive aspects of life. I liked his social conscience. He photographed and wrote about Manzanar, and the plight of native Americans of Japanese ancestry. His Manzanar writings, for me, is one of the highlights in his autobiography. His many acquaintances and friends are fondly and personally recounted in ways that I've experienced from no other author. All throughout, you get a strong impression that he was a very scientifically-minded person who also excelled as an artist, and that's very rare even today. He poured himself out into this book.

The calender was spiral bound and oversized. The pictures were absolutely beautiful. I had bought another calender for 1999, but it just doesnt have the same beauty as the Ansel Adams one did, so I had to search out the Ansel Adams one again and get it. It is a choice that I am glad that I made!

The interviews are ace and remarkable in their clarity and insight. These are let down by the lack of context as to the battle within the wider campaign and a map or two would have enabled the reader to see the landscape and the positions, both would have added to the understanding of the action taken by each of the medal winners. Another example is the cover photo, listed as US Army coming ashore on Tinian Island in the Pacific Islands, which is sort of correct but Tinian is one of the northern Mariana islands (next to Sapian which was a major Marine victory) and was the home of the 509th Bomb Group which lead the atomic raids on Japan, a small detail yet one that would context this good book even better.

Beyond Glory is a book full of the memoirs of Veterans. The Veterans are Medal of Honor recipients who are telling their stories from WWII to Vietnam. This is a book for anyone interested in war related things. Since I like that sort of thing, I found this book to be excellent and worthwhile. The genre of this book is Non- fiction since it is real stories from real people. The author, Larry Smith, went to many living recipients and personally interviewed them to get their stories literally in their own words. That is another thing that makes this book so good. He also used great detail and seemed like he was really there telling you the story. I thought this book was excellently written and very interesting. I would rate it 5 stars out of 5 stars. This, in truth, was one of the best books I have ever read and recommend it to everyone, especially if you are a history buff and like to read about War.

The book is wonderful...especially if you want to read about just people who through circumstances become- whether they want to or not---heros.

If you want to see some of these stories brought to life---from now through May 2, 2004 you can see Stephen Lang (Stonewall Jackson "Gods and Generals") portray eight Recipients interviewed for this book at the Women's Armed Forces Memorial at Arlington Cemetery. (go to www.beyondglory.org) You will witness a performance that will leave quite an impression

Both the book and the play are terrific!

Larry Smith's book brings you the reality of true heroes in their own words, just ordinary folks doing their jobs. Actor/writer/director Stephen Lang's theatrical production of "Beyond Glory" may bring you to tears as you join these men "just doing their jobs" in a most extraordinary way. Lang's transition from character to character is as fascinating as each character's endearing story. The play is currently running in Arlington, VA, at the Women's Memorial Theater now, but Lang hopes to take it on the road to colleges and community theaters across the country.

Smith has interviewed twenty-three recipients of the Medal of Honor, and coupled the edited interviews with brief scene-setting passages describing the war and the individual's circumstances. Official citations are appended. Acts for which the Medal was awarded occurred in WWII, Korea, and Vietnam. Some of the names are familiar-Senators James Stockdale, Daniel Inouye, and Bob Kerry. Most are little-known. They are of varied races, education, and background. Some are eloquent, as is Sen. Kerry on patriotism, guilt and redemption; others are blunt and inarticulate. The one common thread is that they generally consider themselves to be ordinary men who rose to an occasion they did not seek. Several make the point that they are not "winners," since in no sense did they compete for the Medal: they prefer to refer to themselves as recipients of an award. Smith was an editor of Parade Magazine, and his analysis never rises above that level, but the stories of the recipients are powerful in themselves.

Adults and children will appreciate the sweet and enlightened "romance" that develops in this story. For the last couple of years I have shared these stories with my family at Christmas time. I am eager to see if there is a sequel to this book already published or one in the works. It is so easy to get caught in the commercial mess and frenzied pace of Christmas that it is so easy to forget what the season is about. From what I understand some of the stories were directly written for this book and others came from other Chicken Soup for the Soul books. Higher recommended reading for anyone who loves the holidays but occasionally forgets what the meaning of the season is.

I'm only on page 40 and it's allready a holiday classic!!!

I really want to read more of the "Chicken Soup for the Soul" series and I think you should too!

Makiya is not a Zionist or a Neo-Con, so it's hard for the Manichean anti-Americans to demonize his evidence and arguments against the totalitarian-drooling status quo in the Middle East. In the first half off the book, he relays heart-breaking anecdotes about sons unable to kiss their dying mothers after a chemical attack, children raped in front of their parents, prisoners forced to drink gasoline and shot so that they would explode, children surviving mass grave shooting, all in that "noble" Arab Gov't known as Saddam Hussein's Iraq.

The second half of the book is a scathing indictment of the Edward Saids and Noam Chomskys of the world who rationalize the inhumanity all too prevalent in the Mid-East, specifically in Iraq, "Saddam was a victim, The U.S. is worse, Saddam's strong!" and all that junk. Because Makiya isn't a GOP Zionist, these criticisms are particularly strong and persuasive. The book is a much needed call on the part of Arabs and Muslims to adopt a Liberty-based morality instead of a relativistic, ethnic allegience based morality. A good book for all to read.

A timely read...

As an arab-american familiar with the brutal insanity of Saddam Hussein's regime, I've always been puzzled by the Arab talking heads who routinely criticize the U.S. for it's targetting of Iraq. Makiya's writing was instrumental in helping me understand this in somewhat deeper terms than simple anti-americanism, though his insightful and revealing writing has only heightened my frustration.

Regarding the current political climate: You can certainly question the U.S.'s motives, but if you find yourself struggling to find "smoking guns" vis-a-vis terrorism and WMDs to ethically support replacing Saddam's regime, look no further than this book.

Beautifully written; there are points at which you will literally be moved to tears.

Now that the American government is controlling Saddam's infamous Abu Ghraib/Ghurayb prison, the site of many atrocities like those described in Cruelty and Silence, we owe it to ourselves to study the crimes against humanity that were perpetrated there. Arguments about whether the old death chamber should be destroyed or maintained for future generations go without much notice in the United States, as do the reports of ongoing investigations to insure we follow legal guidelines in handling the prisoners we now hold at Abu Ghraib. We owe it to ourselves to operate this facility in a manner which testifies to our philosophy and way of life. And when we question ourselves, the cause in Iraq, the price we pay, the chances of success, we should understand the nature of the vicious regime which created the dysfunctional and factionalized Iraqi society we see today. Cruelty and Silence helps us develop a long-term perspective to the challenges ahead.

This is one of the best books I have read all year. Ten years old, it is still agonisingly relevant. In its bearing witness to human cruelty, human indifference but also human courage, it is as unflinching, as passionate and as magnificent as the works of Primo Levi. Beautifully written, meticulously observed, focussed on people, not abstractions, it is a book that haunts me and will continue to do so for a long time to come. If you have any doubts at all about the rightness of invading Iraq, read this book. There will be no doubts left, only a terrible regret that the ousting of the Saddam regime was not done long, long ago.

Frightening, prescient study of Iraq under Saddam

Makiya achieves two goals in this 1993 book: he details the "rising curve of cruetly" in Iraq under the rule of Saddam Husein and more broadly throughout the Arab world, and he castigates Arab intellectuals for their silence on this topic.

Even though it is 13 years old, this book is highly relevant today for people trying to understand the middle east. Makiya warns that "Sunni-Shi'i hatred is today [in 1993] the most virulent potential source of new violence," thus accurately predicting Iraq's current quandry. Iraq's Sunni minority will "fight to the bitter end before allowing anything that so much as smells of an Islamic reupblic to be established in Iraq. They see in such a state -- whether rightly or wrongly is irrelevant -- their own annihilation." I wonder if the Bush administration was aware of this viewpoint as it planned the invasion of Iraq.

The book tackles the topic of cruetly through several first-person accounts, including a survivor of the Iraqi occupation of Kuwait, an Iraqi arrested and interrogated by the secret police, and Kurdish witnesses to chemical attacks and mass deportations and shootings. The reader learns about the anarchy of the intifada, the brief and unsuccessful uprising against Saddam in the aftermath of the 1991 Gulf War, where rebels resorted to wanton vengence-killing, and the returning security forces were paid cash bonuses for killing Shi'i males. Based on documents captured by Kurdish fighters, Makiya analyzes the efforts of the Iraqi regime to eliminate the Kurdish independence movement as a threat to B'athist hegemony, an operation code-named "Al-Anfal," a reference from the Koran to parceling out the spoils of war, which appears to have involved the razing of thousands of villages, as well as the killing of 100,000 non-combatants. The author also touches on violence against women, a widespread problem in the mid-east, and apparently a tactic that the Iraqi regime institutionalized as a strategy for dishonoring entire families.

On their own, these stories are chilling, just like other historical accounts of terror and genocide. They are even more disturbing when one stops to consider the implications for peace and prosperity in the middle east today. Makiya notes that the "terrible force of memory...tends always to sow dragons' teeth in the shape of the children and survivors of the dead," and he warns that the legacy of Saddam Husain for Iraq may be a continuation of violence, terror, cruelty, and silence.

In the second part of the book, Makiya takes Arab intellectuals to task for their support of Saddam during the Gulf War and for their wilful ignoring of the violence and terror that characterized his regime and that are all too prevalent throughout the middle east. Ideologies based on cultural nationalism, which ignore the importance of human rights, are "morally bankrupt," in Makiya's view. I found his arguments persuasive, although to be fair I have not read the writings of those he criticizes.

Okay, I'm not always ready to jump straight into the Bible at 6:30 a.m. But Michelle Medlock Adams eases me into my day. She starts each daily reading with one Bible verse, then tells a story about her own life. She doesn't make herself out to be a supermom or superChristian. She's real. I like that.

Lots of her devotionals offer great ideas that have improved my relationship with Jesus. She suggests keeping a prayer notebook, where you write down your prayer requests and then jot down the answers God gives. It's so cool to see how and when God answers our prayers.

Another thing I like about this book is its size -- you can easily slip it into your purse or laptop case and take it with you.

Well worth the seemingly hefty price. In addition to containing source material that benefits *any* modern-day game (e.g. details on international law-enforcement agencies), it includes expansions on things alluded to in the main Delta Green book, such as the Army of the Third Eye, and new icky horrors like the Skoptsi.

There is also wonderful information on ghoul society and on the "King in Yellow"/Hastur mythos, concluding with "Night Floors," which is in my opinion one of the best damn adventures ever written.

I bought this book hoping to "validate" the experiences that I have gone through. I was very interested to know how Mrs. Adams won her victory over childhood ritual abuse. However, I did not feel that for me she answered that question. She went into intense step-by-step detail of what happened to her over and over again which I feel was over-kill. I wanted her to spend less time on all of the details of the abuse and more time on how she actually won her victory step-by-step. The book switches back and forth from her host self to her little girl alter who tells of the actual abuse. Little information was written about her experiences in therapy. I would have liked to hear more about that too. Mrs. Adams is a very brave person to write her story. It seems to have helped her tremendously in her recovery. I had hoped that she would have thought about the reader's recovery as well. This is an excellent book if all you are looking for is detailed information regarding what actually happens. However, be prepared for graphic details and triggers. If you are looking for a book that helps in the actual healing process, try "Safe Passage To Healing" by Oksana which gives the right amount of details with some excellent how-to skills.

This book is a very powerful accounting of severe trauma experienced in childhood. Sometimes, the author recounted acts that were so heinous they were hard to believe. Having worked with survivors of ritual abuse, however, I had to move through my denial and into acceptance, realizing that this kind of trauma does exist.

The book has an easy style to it, which belies the content. Any survivor reading this book, whether or not a survivor of ritual abuse, may find certain parts of the author's story triggering. Be gentle with your inner child while reading this book.

I highly recommend this book for survivors, family members supporting survivors, and clinicians working with survivors. - Sara Crusade, M.A. (...)

Drawn Swords is one of the most helpful resources on ritual abuse I've located. Jeanne's story is also highly inspirational. It's also one of the few books dealing with ritual abuse that has a happy ending.

We know that Jeanne's overcome many great difficulties associated with ritual abuse. The strength and clarity of Jeanne's determination is expressed in the beginning and this may be comforting to many survivors. Knowing Jeanne survived these traumatic experiences makes it easier to read her story.

Rather than simply being a story about ritual abuse, it beautifully expresses one woman's courageous determination in the face of unimaginable evil. Jeanne's story should serve as an inspiration to survivors and their allies alike.

"Drawn Swords" is a book I frequently recommend to survivors of ritual abuse, their loved ones, and therapists. It is a source of strength, guidance, and inspiration. Jeanne Adams gently moves back and forth between nostalgic reminiscing about the era of her childhood and straightforward descriptions of the horrors of her ritual abuse. Within the worst of it, she provides spiritual sustenance. Poetic and sometimes funny anecdotes work as a salve at the close of her chapters. This book is deeply honest, exquisitely written, and a source of courage and hope. Ellen P. Lacter, Ph.D., Clinical Psychologist

If you're looking for the perfect gift for a fan of Forumula One, this book is it. I've given a few away as gifts, and it's always a riot to see the results. Whether it's a child, teen, or adult (I've mostly given this book to adults), faces light up, and the person who receives it becomes immediately drawn into the book . . . for hours. Try giving one at a party and watch as everyone gathers around to get in on the play. This is PERFECT for the fan who has everything (or the fan who wishes to have everything . . . such as a Ferrari F300). An unbelievable amount of fun. You won't be disappointed. Enjoy!

Wow, great information, great fun! A must read, actually it is a tome to pour over. There is a lot to digest, and it is very interesting. It is a very clever layout, there are lots of pockets and flaps to explore. Not for children unattended though, it could be quickly demolished. My one beef is that I found the glasses (not 3d by the way) to be a little tough to view sometimes.

Absolutely wonderful. Adam does a great job on the Hebrew aleph-bet. Good, accurate discriptions with the numerical value as well. What I am most enamored with are his Magen Davids. They are beautiful, artistic and classically suited to each season and phase of Jewish life. Good Job Adam!

Mandala Miracles

"Looking at the letters as the expressions of creation can bring us back to the creation, to G-d's dream and vision of the world that was intended to be, to the purpose of creation, and to our own seemingly unlimited potential for human creativity." ~ Rabbi David Zeller

Adam Rhine's beautifully illustrated alphabet originates from ballpoint sketches that turn into warm watercolor expressions that seem to be an ever-changing mandala miracle. His fascination with calligraphy and interest in infusing his work with the energy of color takes his black-and-white pen drawing into new realms. Here he paints and tells the story of each letter. When discussing "Beit" we see a drawing and also read:

"Having a solid foundation, the letter beit represents a house or home. Each of us can be a home for the divine and a source of blessings to the world, making it a true home for the Divine."

As you contemplate each holy letter in this book you can gain a deeper sense of purpose in the way letters are arranged to produce deeper meanings in words.

"Chai, the world for `life,' is spelled with a chet and yud. This combination unites the presence of G-d (represented by the yud) to our existence in time (chet)."

The drawings themselves are alive with meaning and beauty. I love the drawing "Ahava" because two hearts are incorporated into the picture to produce a stained-glass effect. The "Tikkun Olam" painting would be beautiful framed.

A Stupendously Beautiful Book

Adam Rhine's Hebrew Illuminations is a stupendously beautiful book. Rhine, a professional artist since 1991 and a member of the American Guild of Judaic Art, has put together a coffee table book of illustrations of both the letters of the Hebrew alphabet and a variety of Stars of David (i.e., 6-pointed or Jewish stars).

From the coloring to the fine graphic detail, these hand-drawn letters andstars unflinchingly reveal the magic that is at the core of Hebrew and Jewish written expression. As Rabbi David Zeller says in the book's forward:

"It is indeed illuminating to see how far the Hebrew letters have traveled around the world and into the cosmos. It is a wonder how they have inspired people of many religions, traditions, cultures, and professions. What is this fascination with these strange shapes - the ancient, timeless, Hebrew letters?... As you contemplate these letters now, go beyond the identified letter and its 'sub-atomic' letter particles. Allow your imagination to soar and take you through the portals of these glyphs to the worlds beyond them....

"This is the nature of the contemplative process: we open ourselves to the stimulus - here, the bold and richly colorful illuminations of the Hebrew alphabet - and our inner being supplies the rest, taking us to previously unimagined universes within. The potential of art rooted in the sacred is to take us on a sacred journey on which we discover our own unique relationship to the source of life."

Each letter occupies its own over-sized page, and facing it is a description of the letter along with commentary written by Rhine. Relevant prayers and sayings, in Hebrew, are also sprinkled throughout the book.
After theletters of the Hebrew alphabet come the Stars of David, and these are truly visionary and breathtaking in both their conception and execution. If you are Jewish, or know someone who is Jewish, or are just interested in things relating to the core of the Western esoteric tradition, then this book is a must-have. I truly feel lucky to have a copy to hold in my hands and to show my friends. Children love the beautiful images as well.
