Mingling of Irish History and Irish Pop Culture

We only read the first chapter of Dawe's book in my introduction to Irish Lit Class, his chapter that relates the history
of Belfast through the history of Van Morrison. But the little bit that we read was enough to get me hooked. A professor
at Trinity College Dublin, Dawe's work carries with it a personal nature, much like Joyce's relationship to Dublin in "Dubliners,"
but the nature of the section that I read is such that it ties the modernization of Belfast to the modernization of Belfast's
culture as depicted through the career of Van Morrison. It was fascinating and accessible. If you're a Van fan, you need
to read this because it contextualizes his work so much more than the songs themselves. Great work.

Splendid Exploration of the Life of a Monastery

In Rievaulx Abbey, the authors have given us a splendid portrayal of life in the Cistercian monastery. The personages of
Aelred and Walter Daniel truly come alive in this work. In addition to the historical perspective of the book, we are given
insight into the methods of architectural historians and come away with a better understanding of how great historical buildings
are interpreted. The prose of Fergusson and Harrison is awe-inspiring. This book is a must-have for the student of monastic
architecture.

I enjoy historical fiction and this book was a fun read! Intrigue, romance, history, and an oh so quiet and ethereal hand
of God was ever present in her story. I was drawn in by the characters and I look forward to the next Abbey Chronicle!

This is a delightful little book. The insight of the introduction is wonderful, and the translation is faithful. The Rule
itself is inspiring, and it becomes clear to the reader why Augustine has had such a lasting impact on Western monastic spirituality
and, on a much broader level, Western Theology. This is a must have for any theological library.

A noble edition of a spiritual classic

There are many editions of this great spiritual classic, but Cardinal Gasquet's translation of the Rule of Saint Benedict
has been out of print for too long. It is a delight to see it reprinted - and so handsomely - leatherbound, gold blocking,
silk ribbon, noble endpapers. Baronius have done a great service in publishing it so beautifully.
Its pocket-size renders it particularly useful for the laity who may wish to read a portion each day as they travel, and the dignity of this edition makes it an ideal gift. Cardinal Gasquet's introduction, too, offers valuable insights to the rule and to Benedictine spirituality.

Very pastoral as well as scholarly

This book is wonderful! I have read it and think it is highly pastoral, a synthesis of conferences by Abbot Holzherr to his
community, yet a fresh look at the Rule. He combines insight with scholarly outlook and sees the Rule as a sure guide for
modern living. Also, it can be used as a scholarly source with notes and bibliography which are pretty inculsive of what's
out there right now. Highly recommended!

I have been greiving the death of by infant son William. I utilize this book on the days when I am at a loss for words or when I am just in pain. I flip the book open and let the pages fall. I read what catches my heart and usually my heart is comforted. This book has helped me to greive and go through the process. It has helped me to realize what I am going through is normal and my pain is real. It has helped me communicate with God at a time when there are days I feel so separtated from my Source.
I recommend this to you and pray for your healing. LOL
