What do monks do? What is the meaning of and purpose of what they do? If you are looking for the answers to these questions, you will find them in this book, and more besides. You will be welcomed by the author to the beautiful Quarr Abbey on the Isle of Wight in England, and shown around the monastery with an explanation of the meaning of every place and every time for the spiritual life of the monks. The meanings of the signs of nature are complemented with corresponding quotations from the signs of revelation. The book is written in a very appealing, simple and direct way, and contains some touching anecdotes from the personal life of the author. At a time when there are so many misleading and deviant books masquerading as spiritual treatises, it is a joy to find a completely orthodox contemporary spiritual work. It has a general message that goes beyond the cloistered life. It is not at all difficult to read, as the spiritual content is woven into your stay at the monastery, as you are guided through the places of interest there. Quarr was also a special place of prayer for three hundred years in the middle ages, and the author often speaks of the blessing from the prayers of the monks of the original monastery there. At the end of the book we are standing together on the shore of the sea pondering on the beauty to be found on the island, and the uncreated beauty of God. "It is a beauty unknown yet known: known in the still depths of the soul by the deep and subtle joy that radiates from it; known from the gestures of generous love that come from others... It is the beauty of the distant sky...The blue of the sea is murky and eddying; the blue of the beyond is crystal and still. To reach the horizon, the point of intersection of the timeless with time, we need to leave the earth we know... `Then shall I know even as I am known.'"

A historical survey of how judges viewed their office
Helpful Votes: 2 out of 2 total.
Review Date: 2004-06-03
G. Edward White provides a fascinating and engrossing examination of how American judges have viewed their powers and responsibilities throughout history. He does so through a series of biographical essays examining each judge, or group of judges, and their jurisprudential views. While each chapter is capable of isolated reading, the whole really begins to come together only by the end of the whole book. We see the demise of the 19th century oracular theory of judging, seeing the judge as only discoverer and not creator of the law, and the various difficulties that 20th century judges have experienced in trying to replace this discredited theory.

My only caveat is that this book probably should not be read by beginners. While a thorough knowledge of the law is not strictly necessary to enjoyment of this volume, having a basic knowledge of torts, contracts, and property law truly helps to get the full impact of the judges, especially the state judges. Of course, some knowledge of constitutional history is necessary because roughly 2/3 of the judges studied were U.S. Supreme Court justices. Probably one of the best times to read this volume is after completing the first year of law school.

This book was incredible but you have to get the earliest edition, the one printed before his family decided to cut out the best parts to protect his reputation. If you order a used one by special order, be sure to specify that you want the earliest one. His family was nuts! They cut out the best parts.

Wonderful learning tool for Greek

I have gone through the Greek for Beginners Year One and found the series extremely easy to use and learn. It is essential to purchase both the workbook with the textbook because the workbook would be next to impossible to do without the aid and instruction from the textbook.

The series is meant to teach greek for biblical studies, not as conversational language. These books can be easily used by children (maybe 5th grade and higher) and adults. The textbook is self-explanatory and the workbook provides the necessary practice needed to facilitate learning. There are thirty units. Each unit is broken into 5 mini lessons that can easily be done on a daily basis or weekly depending on your schedule. I highly recommend this series for immersing yourself into learning basic greek.

I grew up reading the graphic novels so I was overjoyed when I got my hands on this and its companions. There are very few worlds which I find more intense than the world of Elfquest. The Pini's are a rare jewel to behold. All in all I highly recomend ANY Elfquest Novel graphic or otherwise.

It'as amazing how a booklet like this can be helpful. There are 35 pages with precious pieces of advice for those moments when one can find no courage or doesn't know where else to look for strength .One page contains a sentence or a couple of paragraphs on courage and how to develop it . The mirror page shows an inspirational illustration by R.W. Alley with his trademark elves. It's very "simple" , so if you're looking for some in depth analysis you should look elsewhere - but if you'r looking for basic guidelines or a pocket lifesaver to help you cope with everyday life when things are too difficult to figure out all by yourself , you may enjoy it . I have found the whole series very helpful ,( R.W. Allen illustrated them all , there are several authors ), and have given them as gifts to friends who were depressed or grieving , and these friends loved them too. For those who are feeling a little more than "blue"it can be the next best thing after seeing a therapist and a doctor.

THE definitive text on wildlife law
Helpful Votes: 7 out of 7 total.

The first edition of this work, published in 1977, was considered a landmark in legal scholarship. Subsequent editions have lived up to that standard. The present edition (3rd) is expanded to cover related laws in the United States that impact wildlife. The organization of this book follows an historical view up until the 1970s. From that point the book follows the development of wildlife law in response to the changing cultural values of "the environmental era."

There is little concerning wildife law in the United States that is not covered in this volume. The exception is the myriad of state laws, a task that would have consumed ten times the amount of space. All in all, this is a standard reference in the highest sense of the word. I have used this as a text in not only wildlife management classes, but also environmental ethics and environmental policy. The book is that useful. I highly recommend this to anyone interested in wildlife and wildlife law.

Military families are much like other families. However, because of unique aspects of the military lifestyle, the stressful developmental transistions in the "normal" civilian family are exacerbated in the military family. This review of the literature on military families, including an annotated bibliography, focuses on the unique aspects of military living: frequent separations and family reunions that result in flip-flop family roles, hazardous duty assignments with the constant threat of injury and/or death of a loved one, the substitution of institutional support for the extended family, frequent mobility accompanied at times by the stress of adjustment to foreign cultures, and ofttimes alienation and isolation of the military family from the civilian community. The effect of a rank-conscious system with its built-in chain-of-command on the family is also discussed.

However, benefits accruing military families are addressed as well: stability of income, early retirement with pension, medical care, purchasing privledges at post exchanges and commissaries, and various travel, social and recreational opportunities. Also, the strong family orientation of the military family, accompanied by somewhat conservative, traditional values have (at least in past years, although changes are occurring) been accompanied by a recognition of the importance of a stable self-contained and capable family whose members appear to be emotionally closer and more cohesive that the average civilian family. Understanding how the military family learns to adjust to its unusual stresses can perhaps assist civilian families in learning how to cope with its occasional stressful event. It may also point the way to military planners in making policy and progrm changes that can perhaps eliminate or alleviate some of the sresses on its married military personnel.
