It is amazing how much information you can squeeze in into 230 pages. I have read many books on energy-healing and here is the one that compiles all that knowledge into one. The hands-on exercises are described into the tiniest details and are very easy to follow. I have just found out that "Biotherapy" was aproved as a continuing education home-study course for massage therapists nationwide. No wonder why!

The most complete book on healing I have read. It may not be a "Deepak Chopra", but everything in the book has a practical application that even I, as a lay person, was able to do. It is definitely a life changer!

If you are a woman looking for a thoughtful review of our modern birthing culture this is a wonderful book. I have read a lot about birth options, perspectives of the birth experience, and midwifery history and philosophy but went away wanting for more. My desire to really explore an informed text about our birthing culture was finally satiated by this book. I am not an anthropologist by training and yet found the book accessible, educational, and challenging. I really suggest this book be read by everyone interested in the birth experience, partners, attendants, birthing woman, or children of technocracy.

Necessary reading

If you really want to know what to expect when you're expecting, read this book and Henci Goer's Thinking Woman's Guide to a Better Birth. If you'd really like to remove yourself from the technobirth machine, read Ina May Gaskin's Ina May's Guide to Childbirth and Spiritual Midwifery. If you've always thought you might want a natural birth, read Peggy O'Mara's Having a Baby, Naturally. And remember this one thing: If you really (really) want a natural, unmedicated birth, don't give birth in a hospital.

An amazing look into the technocracy of birth.

Exposes Obstetric care as a disempowering ritual
Helpful Votes: 37 out of 38 total.
Review Date: 1999-02-23
The majority of obstetric procedures, from putting on a hospital gown to the birthing position itself, are unnecessary and sometimes dangerous rituals that are perpetuated by an authoritarian system in its desire to maintain control over a virtually uncontrollable process. Robbie Davis-Floyd has studied these rituals of birth; why taking the ride to L&D in the wheelchair sets up an invalid mindset in the laboring woman, and how the lithotomy position robs the woman of her birthing power, forcing her to rely on the medical professions to deliver her baby for her.

It is powerful stuff and difficult to accept, but truth sometimes is.

An excellent source for those who are interested in the governance of health care organizations. Relations of staff and CEO to boards are critical to the effective functioning of health organizations. This book provides the tools to more effectively understand how to harness and lead the power of boards to the best advantage of the organization. Pointer and Orlikoff are two of the best (actually unique) individuals in this important area. They have used the knowledge acquired through work with a large number of organizations to help understand how they work and how to work with them. Must reading for CEOs, board members and those who interact with boards.

Board Work offers a simple yet powerful model for governance
Helpful Votes: 6 out of 6 total.
Review Date: 1999-08-31
Board Work is as clear and practical a work on governance as I've ever read. I commend it to new and experienced board members, to the chairs of governance committees charged with board improvement, and to the executives who staff boards.

As a trustee and governance consultant, I know these authors and have heard them speak -- and it was a pleasure to see how well the book transfers their years of experience into print.

The book works so well because it is built on a straight-forward model that the authors carry throughout every chapter. The model suggests that healthcare boards (and most other boards, for that matter) have five central roles: defining organizational ends, ensuring management performance; overseeing financial performance; overseeing quality; and providing for the board's own structure, composition and effectiveness. Boards carry out these roles in three ways: by making policies, making decisions, and overseeing performance. One of the book's strongest components is explaining how - in order to define organizational ends - a board identifies the organization's stakeholders and their expectations. Few boards do this at all, much less do it well.

Board Work joins books by John Carver, William Bowen, Cyril Houle and Richard Chaitt as an exceptional contribution to the emerging body of pragmatic governance literature.

I recommend it highly.

This was a very insightful and practical guide to not only treating this disease, but many others as well. Doctors are not mind readers, nor are they infallible. They need to have patients cooperate with them, and provide them with as much insightful information as possible in order to obtain an accurate diagnosis. Patients should not rely on the doctor to have all the answers, and frequently, will not, if there is meaningful information left from his or her view. This book reminds us all that we are responsible for our own health, and the doctor is there to help us along that path only if we allow them. It is up to each of us, as patients, to be forthright, and open with our problems, concerns, and illnesses. We must forever be mindful that today's health system does not encourage lengthy visits with physicians; hence, we should come prepared, equiped, and aware of our bodies and how our health is being impacted by whatever our conditions may be. This book gently but firmly reminds us of our responsibilities to take charge of our own bodies and of our interrelationships with our doctors. Bravo on a book well done, indeed.

A wonderful book!

This book is a valuable resource for anyone who is facing the challenges of a Sjogren's diagnosis. The authors address both the newly diagnosed patient and those who have been coping with this chronic illness for many years. Their advice on choosing a doctor and forming a partnership with her is wonderful and, I believe, critical to the physical and emotional well being of the chronically ill patient. I hope physicians will read the book. The authors' insights into the frustrations of treating patients with incurable but manageable illnesses are lessons for both patients and physicians.

If you have been recently diagnosed with Sjogren's or if you are struggling with complicated symptoms which doctors can't diagnose, you must read this book. The medical information is clear and easy to understand but thorough. The authors will help you navigate the complex medical community.

For those who have been living with Sjogren's for many years "A Body out of Balance" reinforces the goal of having the best possible quality of life. The authors give the reader tools to help achieve that goal.

"A Body out of Balance" will touch you. You will be grateful that finally someone understands what you've been going through. You will also be grateful because someone is offering help and hope.

This book is a very good example of how patient and doctor can and must collaborate; in this case on a book about a specific disorder, but in a bigger sense, too: patients and doctors must learn to work together to solve complex, tricky medical conditions caused by autoimmunity, to come up with customized treatment packages which enhance quality of life without threatening it.

Many overweight and/or obese teenagers and young adults suffer from both low self-esteem and insecurity--I myself (at one time) suffered from this problem. This book's authors have incorporated many of the key elements of Lindora's Lean For Life program which have made it such a success. Written with compassion and insight, it can be a great aid for those teenagers and young adults dealing with obesity and the low self-esteem so often associated with it. My only regret is not having known what I do today (I started the LFL program at the age of 30--after having been obese for years while dealing with yo-yo dieting).

Great book to boost your self-confidence and self-esteem.

i'm really very excited about `bodyPRIDE' simply because i have a teenage boy who was overweight and in a lot of despair about it. we used this book on a daily basis and within 4 months, he dropped several pounds. more important, his self-awareness and self-esteem grew dramatically. now, he's trying out for junior varsity football and is more happy about himself. the plan is easy to do and takes you through it, step by step. your kid can do it with you or, better yet, by him or herself. the language talks to them directly, i think. if you have a problem with your kid, this is a good tool. honestly, art richman

I learned a lot about my body from reading this book, especially why I get stuck. The connection between what I think or believe and how it manifests in my body couldn't be better explained. It was a real eye opener. I also enjoyed the practical suggestions for getting aligned and balanced, particularly undulation, one of my favorite exercises.

I own a lot of books on optimum brain performance as part of relentless seach for better understanding - & application - of peak performance technologies. I know very well that peak performance depends very much on the brain working in perfect harmony & close integration with the body. I therefore also own quite a lot of books about enhancing body performance.

This is one of them, which is also one of the few I always keep on my immediate shelf for quick reference.

Although it has been written essentially as an introduction to Hellerwork, I find the authors' intellectual work in creating the connection between life issues & natural bodily alignment very illuminating. Additionally, he shows how to restore the body's natural balance from the inside out.

Obviously both authors have profound understanding of the human body & its possibilities for maximum health & efficiency.

I did not realise that one of the authors (Joseph Heller) was an aerospace engineer by training until I read this book. This probably explains the logical structure & systematic layout of the various chapters as follows:

PART I: KNOWLEDGE OF BODY
The Body in Everyday Life
The Body's Role in the Strcutures of Consciousness
The Plasticity of the Human Body
Bodywork

PART II: BODY OF KNOWLEDGE
Introduction to Hellerwork
The Thoracic Cavity
Understanding or Standing on Your Own Two Feet
Reaching Out
Control & Surrender
Gut feelings or Let It All Hang Out
Holding Back
Losing Your Head
The Balancing Act
Integration & Coming Out

I only wish that there were more visual/graphic illustrations to go with the various chapters.

To me, the authors sum up the book very beautifully. Let me recap their exact words in the last chapter: "...Enlightenment is not something that ony happen when you meditate, chant your mantra, listen to your favourite piece of music: It is something that happens every day, in the way you move, relate to others, work, cook supper, brush your teeth. The challenge or purpose of life is to experience it as fully as possible at every moment. Your body is both vehicle & metaphor for your process: When the hologram is integrated with the being, the result is enlightenment." [The authors use the hologram, in an abstract sense, to represent the exact physical expression of a person's mind & spirit; in a concrete sense, any part of the body may be seen to reflect & contain everything there is to know about the whole body, just like a hologram.]

On the whole, the many ideas in this book are definitely worth exploring from the standpoint of becoming a full-time owner of your own body!

New and helpful information about bipolar disorder

Review Date: 2008-06-09
In my opinion the authors of this book do an excellent job presenting the latest thoughts behind the symptom complex of bipolar spectrum disorder. I can identify with the symptoms and the explanations helped me understand my illness better. Some of the concepts may be a little technical for someone who is experiencing symptoms like concentration problems or does not have a high school education. Although in general it is easy to read and the exercises are excellent. One draw back is after reading the book, it can be frustrating to interact with health care professionals who do not know this information and are still relying on old thoughts about the disorder. An informed patient can be misunderstood easily.

An Excellent Book! Highly Recommended.

I don't know of any other book on the subject of Bipolar Disorder that is as state-of-the-art, comprehensive and accessable (i.e. readable) as "Break the Bipolar Cycle." What is most striking about this book is how useful and practical it is for everyone involved in the process of living with and/or treating Bipolar Disorder (and perhaps mental illness in general). As someone who is very familiar with Bipolar Disorder, I am impressed with Brondolo and Amador's ability to reach and inform not only the person suffering with the disorder, but his/her family and treatment team as well. Interspersed throughout the book are illuminating clinical examples which make for an interesting and relatable read. Most of all, the book offers a practical and hopeful picture of what it is like to live with this illness and how to take control and make the best life possible for yourself, your loved-ones and your clients. Thank you Drs. Brondolo and Amador for this very important work and for dedicating your lives to helping those in need. "Break the Bipolar Cycle" is a must read for anyone who has been affected by Bipolar Spectrum Disorders.

FINALLY - A SELF-HELP GUIDE FOR HYPOMANIA & SOFT BIPOLAR
Helpful Votes: 7 out of 8 total.
Review Date: 2008-03-31
This is a brilliant self-help guide. Elizabeth Brondolo has provided anyone grappling with bipolar spectrum disorders (especially hypomania & soft bipolar, as well as classic bipolar, et al) an invaluable work which in addition to very readable text, provides tools to monitor one's own behavior and make lasting changes in one's life. It includes easily implementable exercises for the layman (i.e. me) for dealing with "Bipolar Spectrum Disorders" (BSD). The exercises provided in the book are meant to be photocopied. They are non-onerous, logical and will make you stare your behavior in the face. This is not a guide for the clinician per se -- it is for those of us who suffer from the effects of this often debilitating condition.

This wonderful book will undoubtedly become a classic in an area of psychiatry that is poorly understood and often ignored by intelligent and otherwise effective therapists and psycho-phamacologists. It serves as a perfect companion to Jim Phelps' "Why Am I Still Depressed", which takes a more clinical approach, but is equally approachable. Phelps' book is especially useful from the psycho-pharmacological side in determining what your diagnosis might be and how to deal with it. Brondolo is a Ph.D. in Psychology (therapist) while Phelps is an M.D.

I was recently diagnosed with hypomania after being in therapy for 13 years and having being prescribed antidepressants for the majority of that period. Sadly, most professionals don't acknowledge more than a few meaningless gradations in the bipolar spectrum and the term "bipolar" is so scary and brings up such horrifying & stigmatizing images of manic depressive behavior (i.e. Jamison's portrayal of herself cited a few lines below), that most would rather avoid the topic entirely, dismissing therapists and M.D.s as "crazy". One thinks -- "This is not me!". Guess again -- it might be. (for a classic book that reads like a page-turner on full-on Manic Depression, see: An Unquiet Mind: A Memoir of Moods and Madness by Kay Redfield Jamison, Professor of Psychiatry at the Johns Hopkins University).

Most of the gradations along the "bipolar spectrum" are not even recognized in the DSM IV which is the most comprehensive guide for psychiatric professionals in making diagnoses. The whole concept of bipolar spectrum disorders is a relatively recent phenomena, having only been truly studied and understood over the last decade or so. DON'T BE SCARED AND DON'T CONTINUE TO WRECK YOUR LIFE - many hypomanics are incredibly successful professionals (see: The Hypomanic Edge: The Link Between (A Little) Craziness and (A Lot of) Success in America - John D. Gartner, which is a highly entertaining read, and uplifting, because it makes you realize that there is plenty of hope out there).

Brondolo's book is a wonder for those of us who have suffered most of our lives and always thought that those closest to us giving us loving feedback were the crazy ones. It provides some easily understandable guidelines, exercises and common sense pieces of advice (good luck finding a therapist who understands what is going on with you -- after years of poor judgment and simply lying to therapists and myself, I would strongly recommend some form of Cognitive Behavior Therapy or Dialectic Behavior Therapy). Brondolo & Phelps also provide one with a framework for how to approach what you've been suffering from and how to approach your therapists and M.D.s with these issues, as many of them (the majority in my experience -- even those who understand BSD well) will not ask you many key questions or monitor key behaviors that are essential for you to get better unless you bring these things up yourself (makes one feel really great that you're spending so much $$$ on these folks).

One of the scariest things that emerges in Brondolo & Phelps' work is that at least 50% of people who suffer from BSD have been mis-diagnosed for years (on avg 10 years) and have been on the usual array of antidepressants (Prozac, Zoloft, Lexapro, Paxil, et al). THESE ANTIDEPRESSANTS IN FACT HAVE THE TENDENCY TO BRING ON AND/OR EXACERBATE HYPOMANIC EPISODES!

BRONDOLO & PHELPS' BOOKS ARE "EASY READS", easy to browse through, and easy to pick up and start again at a new place. I am grateful for the existence of these two works (and you will be too -- and no -- no one has paid me for this review -- I'm the one who has paid dearly all these years -- and continue to pay). Best of luck.

This is a great book!

This book will help all parents understand the risks and benefits of antibiotic use and give them a greater understanding of when antibiotics should be prescribed for their children. Learn that it is alright to tell your doctor that you'd rather not use medications if they are not absolutely necessary. This book is well written, easy to understand, and a must read for parents. Makes a great gift as well for a new parent! I recommend it highly.

Come on parents, admit it, which one of us hasn't left our child's pediatrician's office at least once, feeling a bit miffed and irritated that the doctor denied the need for antibiotics, when you were absolutely convinced that one was warranted.... If you raised your hand, then this book is a must read and will prove to be a valued addition to your home medical library.

As a registered nurse in the pediatric and adult settings for many years, I have seen first hand the devastating effects of patients infected with antibiotic resistant organisms. It is frightening enough just to watch a patient try to recover from such an illness, let alone try to care for them when traditional therapies have failed.

Unfortunately, the frequency and difficulty of treating these types of patients have become an increasingly alarming scenario in today's acute care facilities. We are long overdue in the rethinking of the way antibiotics are currently prescribed in this country.

With their new book, BREAKING THE ANTIBIOTIC HABIT A Parent's Guide to Coughs, Colds, Ear Infections, and Sore Throats, Drs. Offit and Bell have successfully provided clear and interesting discussions about the necessity for prudent use of antibiotic therapy for our children as well as the adult population. It also provides surprisingly simple and clear guidelines for caregivers whose children display symptoms of coughs, colds, ear infections and sore throats. It is a needed refresher course for experienced parents, and proves to be an important reference for all first time parents and grand-parents.

Bravo! Drs. Offit and Bell, thank you for this timely and important book! What an informative little page turner!!

Being a new parent, I was worried when my 9 month old had a high fever and a cough that lasted more than a day. The doctor told me to keep my child comfortable and monitor his symptoms. If he did not improve in a few days, I was to call back. I felt helpless. I had collected numerous books about babies and what to expect the first year: but none of these books had the information I wanted to know such as how do I comfort a coughing baby at night. Breaking the Antibiotic Habit is wonderful. I read it from cover to cover the day it arrived. Now I am more confident that I can take care of my child when he is sick. I know what to watch for and can communicate better with my child's pediatrician.

I just happened to glimpse this book at my local library and checked it out. What an informational storehouse! I am the parent of two small children, who just recently have been coming down with coughs, colds, ear infections. Nowhere in any of my "pediatrition handbooks" did I get such an in depth understanding of common childhood problems and how and when antibiotics can help and when they can't. I wish I read this book last winter when I needed the information. I am buying this book and highly reccomend it to all parents. Read it cover to cover!

If you really care about your health and TRULY PREVENTING BREAST CANCER, this book is a must read!

Dr. Epstein is a beacon of truth in explaining how we are exposed to so many toxins and pollutants that our immune systems break down and can't naturally fight cancer cells.

Our current medical approach is WAIT UNTIL THE CANCER SHOWS UP IN A MAMMOGRAM then assult the cancer and your own immune system with poisons and surgery. Dr. Epstein says: Cut your exposure to toxins and strengthen your own immune system so that you reduce your risk of ever getting cancer.

Which approach will you chose?

At last, somebody who tells the horrifying truth about the American Cancer Society and how they have let us down for profit.

I would never trust anything the American Cancer Society says. They are very biased in favor of expensive pharmaceuticals with cancer-causing side-effects. They are the wealthiest "charity" in America, with cash reserves of $1 Billion.

The Role of the ACS in the War Against Cancer

The verdict is unassailable. The American Cancer Society bears a major responsibility for losing the winnable war against cancer.
The launching of the 1971 War Against Cancer provided the ACS with a well-exploited opportunity to pursue it own myopic and self-interested agenda. Its strategies remain based on two lies -- that there has been dramatic progress in the treatment and cure of cancer, and that any increase in the incidence and mortality of cancer is due to aging of the population and smoking while denying any significant role for involuntary exposures to industrial carcinogens in air, water, consumer products and the workplace.

Most of the funds raised by ACS go to pay overhead, salaries, fringe benefits, and travel expenses of its national executives in Atlanta. They also go to pay Chief Executive Officers, who earn six-figure salaries in several states, and the hundreds of other employees who work out of some 3,000 regional offices nationwide. The typical ACS affiliate, which helps raise the money for the national office, spends more than 52 percent of its budget on salaries, pensions, fringe benefits, and overhead for its own employees.

Salaries and overhead for most ACS affiliates also exceeded 50 percent, although most direct community services are handled by unpaid volunteers. DiLorenzo summed up his findings by emphasizing the hoarding of funds by the ACS.

"Most contributors believe their donations are being used to fight cancer, not to accumulate financial reserves. More progress in the war against cancer would be made if they would divest some of their real estate holdings and use the proceeds -- as well as a portion of their cash reserves -- to provide more cancer services."

Aside from high salaries and overhead, most of what is left of the ACS budget goes to basic research and research into profitable, patented cancer drugs.

The current budget of the ACS is $380 million and its cash reserves approach one billion dollars. Yet its aggressive fund-raising campaign continues to plead poverty, and lament the lack of available money for cancer research, while ignoring efforts to prevent cancer by phasing out avoidable exposures to environmental and occupational carcinogens.

Meanwhile, the ACS is silent about its intricate relationships with the wealthy cancer drug industry and chemical industries.

I just finished this book today and found it very useful. The authors presented many helpful facts and cited many credible research trials and journal articles to support their points. I did not find the book to be inflammatory or alarmist, just filled with useful, practical and illuminating tips about what women can do to lower their risk for breast cancer. I admire the book's "prevention" approach: why wait for breast cancer to appear before getting into action? So many of the book's suggestions contribute to overall health in general, it just makes good sense to follow them.

I was concerned to find out how many elevated risk factors I already have for breast cancer (some of which I already knew, first among them being my mother's death from the disease at age 43). However, this book did make me feel that there are at least some health and environmental factors I can affect with my decisions and behavior; learning of my elevated risk only invigorates my commitment to doing all that I can in an effort not to add to those risks.

The book's expose on the dangers of mammography for premenopausal women and the elevated risks of breast cancer associated with oral contraceptives was especially eye-opening to me. It is a shame that corporate interests and profit margins in this country often seem to take precedence over good health information and awareness. Read the book in an effort to gather the most information that you can about risk factors for this disease; it will be worth your time.
