I am a non-smoker with COPD and allergies. Due to my job, I have access to just about any medical reference I want. I wanted a guide for medications and conditions to help me be better informed about my problems. I found this guide to be very useful. Dr. Adams presents excellent information on both diseases and conditions as well as medications. This book is a couple of years old, but still as up to date with medications as possible, and still quite useful. I am hoping he will update this guide soon, and I would purchase it if he did. I also have his newer guide to asthma, and it is quite good as well. I would recommend this if you need a reference for lung problems.

Just as other reviewers had said, this is a great fundamental guide understanding breathing disorders. I got my brother-in-law a copy so he could read it as well to try and figure out what is wrong with him. His doctors can't tell him why he has disabling shortness of breath after crossing the room. We are going to create our own theory and present it to his doctors to comment on and this book is all we needed to draft that theory. The book gives hope and that is what I need right now.

The Breathing Disorders Sourcebook is "the guide" on the breathing process and the disorders that are associated with it. Diseases of the air passaages reviewed include, Rhinitis, Nasal Polps, Sleep Apnea, Asthma, Chronir Obstructive Pulmonary Disease, Brochiectas, Cystic Fibrosis, and Lung Cancer. The book also covers diseases of the air sacs and pulmonary vessels. The introductory chapter has a good primer on how the respiratory process works and is integrated with the rest of the body. Another chapter is devoted to medical evaluation and treatment, signs and symptoms of breathing disorders. The text is succinct and direct, with figures and illustrations to help the reader. At times, the book can be technical for the lay reader, but the book includes a useful glossary for terms that are unfamiliar. Perhaps the best value of this book is the abundance of resource material in the Appendix. There are listings of how to get information by phone, contact referral centers, pulmonary rehab centers, national organizations, newsletters, books and pamphlets, allergy and repiratory supplies, and of course, my favorite, a guide to the best web sites on breathing disorders. If you have a breathing disorder, this book definately should be read and will serve well as a future reference. The author brings a lot of experience to his book and it is clear he knows what he is talking about. A small investment for such an tremendous amount of information and advice.

A must read for anyone with a breathing problem.

How do we breathe. Dr. Adams' dandy book lets us count the ways of how we breathe, what can go wrong and what can be done to help us breathe easier. I found the Breathing Disorders Sourcebook a great read with so much information that will allow you to improve your breathing and in many cases avoid lung disease by lifestyle changes. I recommended this book to anyone that has a lung disorder or wants to prevent getting a lung disorder.

I think one of the best things about this book is that it is very encouraging to the patient. Not only is there hope for surviving cancer, but there are also reassuring words for those who face death after alternative therapies have failed. The author also discusses the impact of the patient's emotional life on getting & healing cancer.

This book is a current, objective, and informative source of information on conventional and alternative cancer treatment. I came across this book as my sister and I desperatly tried to find helpful information about treating cancer. This book impressed me as being the perfect book for anyone who is suddenly confronted with the disease for the first time and needs to get informed. They couldn't have picked a more fitting title.

Thorough, a good resource.

In my opinion, a combo approach is the best bet at increasing your survival if you have been diagnosed with cancer. The information given here gives you a number of ways you can go about getting that combination therapy. When family members were researching alternative treatments for my grandmother's cancer, we explored this book along with a number of others. This one gave some good information that wasn't presented in other books. We also found a site, iHerb, that offered a variety of cancer fighting supplements along with additional documentation of their abilities. iHerb is a good source if you are seeking the alternatives Bognar mentions in this book.

David Bogner (and Walter Cronkite in the accompanying 4 hr. PBS videotape special) present a balanced introduction that allows someone recently diagnosed with cancer to get an overview of their treatment options. Without favoring a single approach, Bogner covers conventioal treatments, alternative treatments, psychoimmunity and spiritual approaches. Each of these sections presents a wealth of references where additional information can be obtained. Bogner points out that cancer and its course is a very individual matter and that those who do best are often those most informed about their options. Rather than advocating a particular approach, Bogner suggests that different approaches work best together. The book contains all the information presented in the video tape and then some, but the video tapes done by Walter Cronkite are very warm and reassuring. When Bogner's wife got cancer it took him some time to learn about the options. He wrote this book and produced the PBS special so that others faced with cancer could obtain this information more quickly and easily. He has succeeded in providing an excellent generic overview of treatment options. I can't think of a better, non-partisan basic source of information on cancer treatment than this very inexpensive book. It will not give you all the details about your type of cancer, but it will show you in broad outline the various approaches that are available and where to get more information on them.

In my six years of research on alternative cancer treatment, this book gave me more information than any other. It is artfully arranged with helpful sidebars (key points, definitions, etc.) and anecdotal stories to reinforce the subject. It is wonderfully documented with a great index and 27 pages of endnotes (references for each chapter).

From treating your teeth to detoxifying to herbs to effective tests to immune system rebuilding, I found nothing in this book to disagree with. This is unusual, because many of the topics they discuss are quite controversial. This is simply a tribute to Dr. Diamond, Dr. Cowden and Burton Goldberg and their comprehensive research and writing skill.

Use this book to give you a comprehensive overview of your cancer and your options. Then, update it with some research on the Internet. I learn something new about cancer treatment every day, so no book can be complete. This one comes closest to being the "bedside reader" that every cancer patient needs.

W. John Diamond, M.D., a board-certified pathologist and alternative medicine expert, and W. Lee Cowden, M.D., who is board-certified in internal medicine, cardiovascular disease, and clinical nutrition, joined forces with Burton Goldberg, author of numerous books on alternative medicine, to write Cancer Diagnosis: What To Do Next.

Many people don't know where to turn for information when diagnosed with cancer. And the answers they often get from medical professionals include few options. Lack of knowledge causes many people to undergo treatments they don't want.
Goldberg says that "there is no single magic bullet cure for cancer. Many factors contribute to the development of cancer and many modalities and substances must be used to reverse it."

The authors emphasize that never giving up hope is a critical first step in cancer treatment, no matter what therapy is chosen. They then outline some positive steps that patients can take that will help them chose the therapy that's best for them. Included in this section is a simple test that reveals whether a tumor will respond to chemotherapy, and if so, what the smallest effective dosage is.

They also discuss the causes of cancer, and offer suggestions for prevention and early detection. They provide complete information about testing methods used by alternative practitioners that aid in developing effective treatment plans.

Nutrition plays a big role both in prevention and treatment of cancer, and the authors explain how to choose the best diet for you. They also explain the role of supplements, such as vitamins and minerals, in strengthening the body.

Herbs and other nontoxic therapies can be very helpful for many people. All the details are included, as well as complete information on techniques for stimulating the immune system. Detoxification and energy therapies are also explained.
Detoxification is especially important because of all the pollutants in our air, water, and food. According to the authors, "most conventional doctors do not take these factors into consideration when treating cancer."

Each chapter includes "Quick Definitions," which are explanations of medical terms, in the margins, making it easy to understand the text. Whenever a special test or procedure is discussed, contact information is provided.

"Alternative medicine has established the causes of cancer--from radiation and dietary factors and pesticide residues to stress and dental factors and free radicals--and has safe, nontoxic, and effective therapies that can address each one." Cancer Diagnosis gathers all this information into one easy-to-use book. It's an essential reference for anyone desiring full information on treatment options.

Essential, life-saving, quality-of-life enhancing reading.

Cancer, An Integrative Approach provides a complete summary of cancer treatments currently available, both conventional and alternative. Unlike many other authors and physicians who specialize in cancer treatment, Dr. Catanzaro is well versed in traditional, conventional, and state of the art therapies. His book covers the causes, detection, and treatment of cancer. Treatments include conventional (chemotherapy, radiation) and alternative (herbs, immunotherapy, IV therapy, nutrition). Spiritual aspects of healing are also addressed. I would recommend this book to physicians who treat cancer, pateints who have cancer, and anyone who wants to prevent cancer.

Finally a book that tells the truth. I have had cancer, twice. I do NOT want a CURE for cancer! That's correct, you heard it, I do not want a cure for cancer. I do not want you, your family or anyone else to have to suffer with cancer. I WANT A PREVENTION! NO ONE should get this preventable disease. We have all known for years that the chemicals in our environment have been causing problems. But industry backed by our government has been allowed to flourish at everyone's expense. Cancer is big business and as soon as everyone understands this maybe something will be done! Bravo for taking a stand!

American Cancer Society keeps more than HALF of all donations.

The ACS spends only 16% of contributions on research! More than half of all donations given to them go for their overhead and administrative costs - including six-figure incomes to their executives, fleets of cars, and buying real estate. I call that obscene.

How do they get away with it? Here's how:

All donations are first sent to ACS headquarters where half of it is skimmed off for "overhead." Then fixed budget amounts are sent back to ACS branch offices. That way, when you call a branch office and ask them what their overhead is, they will tell you, "Oh, it's only 5 or 6%." They NEVER tell you that headquarters keeps over 50% of all donations for themselves.

ACS holds about one BILLION dollars in cash!! Why is that not being spent on research?

Don't give your donations to the corrupt ACS. Find a charity that gives more than 75% of your donation to research.

The statistics now predict that 1 out of 2 people will get cancer. Why isn't this front page news?! In other words, we are
looking at a medical emergency akin to the Black Plague; your chances of getting sick are about the same.

The Cancer Society spends about 10 percent of its monies on prevention. That's right. And most of that is spent telling people not to smoke, eat their veggies, and get some exercise. It's all lifestyle advice that says "If you get cancer, it's YOUR FAULT." This book states unequivocally that we're getting sick from our environment: the air we breathe, the water we drink, the food we eat, the detergent we use to wash our clothes, our toothpaste, shampoo, etc.etc. It's bloody horrifying. The bottom line is, cancer is big business; the money is all about drugs and treatment, while our government sits idly by, not informing consumers about anything. I could go on all day. Read this book - for the sake of your children, for the sake of your own health.

Sometimes the truth hurts!

"The book shows that, contrary to the impression fostered by our public relations-dominated media, we are in fact losing the much-vaunted "War on Cancer." Unlike most academics in the cancer field, Prof. Epstein is passionate about public health and cultivates a take-no-prisoners style. Repeatedly rebuffed by the powers that be, he does not hesitate to name names. He claims, for instance, that the National Cancer Institute (NCI) and the American Cancer Society (ACS) have both betrayed us, spending tens of billions of dollars of taxpayer and charity money "primarily targeting silver-bullet cures...while ignoring strategies for preventing cancer in the first place."

As a result, he says, cancer rates have escalated to epidemic proportions, now striking one in every two American men, and more than one in every three women.

This is an angry, impassioned and important book. Much of this book is very technical in nature. It thus requires some effort to read and digest. For the person who is seriously interested in understanding the failure of our society to address issues of industry pollution, this book is indispensable. For those who are ready to join the fight against greed and corruption in the cancer field, it will also be an enormously rewarding experience. As with Prof. Epstein's earlier books, one comes away with an almost encyclopedic knowledge of how chemicals have polluted our environment, and how those who manufacture such chemicals have similarly polluted our political system."

It gave me a nice review of important definitions, structures, and functions of the canine anatomy. I did, however, think the anatomy drawings could be a little in depth, but that was not a major issue to me. If interested in canine PT or just in giving your faithful companion a relaxing massage, this would be a great book to add to your library!

It is probably the best source for information on anesthesia management of congenital heart diseases, perioperative management of ischemia and ventricular failure. It is a 1999 edition, so there are a few points which need to be updated in view of recent advances in both drugs and surgical procedures, but I would still recommend this book to all the prospective cardiac anesthesiologists.

The book is easy to use because of the clear language and the modest amount of information on a subject.

From Ion channels in the molecular Genetics of the arrhythmia to the moment you push a patients face in a bucket of ice to convert them, good stuff. So little is still known about AvNode Rentrant tachycardia, Atrial flutter, classic WPW, etc. that it's highly refreshing to see a text like this. We know about Long QT syndrome and the specific genes responsible for this, mostly, and now the ones that have been identified for WPW, but there is so much more to understand. Did the open heart cryoblations hold fast, years later? What are the lasting effects of radiofrequency ablations? We are still experimental in our understanding, yet so advanced. Pacemakers, ICD's, and proper conversion methods for each arrhythmia, the dreaded Adenocard, etc. so much to do and learn, still.

If you ever wished for a very experienced Doctor and / or nurse, with the time to give you all the information you needed, this book is the answer to your prayers. The guide is the culmination of Carolin's interviews with leading doctors, nurses, social workers, and researchers.

A MUST 'keep handy' reference book. The material is understandable and complete. Each chapter deals with a group of related problems. For instance, Chapter 6 is titled "Oh, My Aching Bones'. It covers basic problems through hip replacement and includes "Yes, Basic Problems Have Typical Solutions" and "When Do You Need a Doctor".

I have bought several for friends and recommend it to each caregiver I meet. It offers practical solutions to common problems, safety tips, hands-on care, and most important, how the issues relate to older people.

This book is a gem. We have fifteen chapters releasing us from all the fears of dealing with an elderly friend or parent. You need this book! For two very
simple reasons. First, an elderly person's physiology is different from ours.
So this would be like taking care of ET! You need to know their physiology.
Second, you need to know when to take them to the hospital, and when not to.
There's a whole set of variables involved in that too. This is such a wonderful book. I even like the printing inside. It's over 450 pages of data that can change your life. I take care of my diabetic mother who is eighty. She is my spiritual path and
she is destroying my anger, laziness, and desires. I can't afford them! I highly
recommend this book to all those with elderly parents or friends. It's a good and fast
spiritual journey. Don't hesitate! Buy the book!

Co-written by professional counseling staff members Moira Cairns, Marney Thompson, Wendy Wainwright and sanctioned by the Victoria Hospice Society, Transitions In Dying & Bereavement: A Psychosocial Guide For Hospice And Palliative Care walks the reader through the stages that chronically ill and dying individuals and their families must progress through, from diagnosis to death to bereavement. The most effective interventions for easing stress and confusion are clearly explained, along with sample dialogues that reveal the issues and challenges at each step. Chapters include notes on multicultural and interdenominational perspectives on death and dying, perspectives on body image, intimacy, and sexuality in the dying, ways to help alleviate feelings of anxiety, fear, burnout, denial, and powerlessness, ways to help in planning for death, and much more. A must-read for aspiring or practicing hospice counselors.

This book is a great resource for anyone in hospice or palliative care. By following the structure of the Palliative Performance Scale, this book will guide you through the varied experiences of people who are dying and their loved ones. The authors do an excellent job of portraying the confusion and stress that surround many families from the point of diagnosis until the final phases of grief, while also giving professionals the information they need to provide comfort and reassurance in this difficult time.

This book should really be considered the Hospice Bible, or at least one volume of it. I have never seen a book so clearly laid out, so encompassing of the psychospiritualsocial concerns and strengths for hospice patients and their families! Our hospice bought it after I fell in love with it. Now our social workers and I (grief specialist and death educator) are using it to train our interdiscplinary team on 1. sensitivity, 2. helpful interventions, 3. understanding family AND team dynamics, and 4. understanding the range of care and history that each patient brings with them (such as their previous experiences with the medical, social services, spiritual, and psychological/psychiatric communitites).

At a time when hospice is changing so radically (with so many for profit hospice and so many agencies "pretending to do hospice under the guise of home health" it is refreshing to see a group who has been able to embrace the totality of palliation and hospice in such a humanistic and holistic way!!!

Kudos to the staff at the Victoria Hospice Society. I hope you know how many other lives you changed as this book was published!!!!
