Very Thorough, Practical Guide: How to Choose and Apply the Appropriate Flower Remedies
Helpful Votes: 12 out of 12 total.
Review Date: 2007-10-17
Author Gotz Blome, M.D., does not waste space in these nearly 400 pages to convince readers of the usefulness and efficacy of flower essence remedies.

An excellent reference book for those who understand that to help a patient overcome illness, the essential first step to a cure is to stabilize and treat that patient's unique mental, emotional, and psychological states.

This book is divided into three sections.

First Section: each of the 38 single Bach Flower essences is discussed in four to five or more pages. There is a short, general description of the type of patient for whom that flower essence is appropriate: For instance, for AGRIMONY, e.g. "Agrimony...for people who...go out of their way to avoid conflict...try to keep their true feelings hidden from everyone else by maintaining a feigned carefree, happy demeanor." This is followed by a description of the kinds of mental states and behaviors to look for when deciding whether that flower essence applies: e.g., Agrimony "...tendency to repress, glossing over of personal problems, oversensitivity. In daily life, used to treat phoniness, playacting...". Then, there is a lengthy descripton of the causes and symptoms of a flower essence. E.g., "Causes and Symptoms of Agrimony Syndrome". This is followed by another lengthy discussion of the effects of a flower essence. E.g., "The Effects of Agrimony". After that, follows another lengthy discussion of pertinent psychotherapeutic notes. Finally each flower essence chapter ends with a list of "Common Combinations with Other Essences". E.g., Agrimony with Aspen, Agrimony with Beech, with Centaury, etc.

In the book's Introduction, the author states, "Because most illnesses arise from the interplay of various psychic or physical influences and particularities of personality and character, Bach flowers are normally administered by combining several essences."

Second Section of the book (in my paperback copy): 65 pages of brief descriptions for each of the combinations of flower essences. For instance, there are thirteen different combinations for Agrimony: E.g., among these thirteen, one can learn that the combination of Agrimony with Centaury is for patients who exhibit "Pathological good-naturedness", distinguished from the combination of Agrimony with Chestnut Bud which is for patients with "Learning difficulties or immaturity caused by shirking."

The third and last section of the book (137 pages in my paperback copy) sets forth, in alphabetical order, a long repertory of different mental, emotional and psychological states and behavior patterns and actions, "absentmindedness", "indecisiveness", "perfectionism", "stuttering"" etc., and the recommended Bach flower or Bach flower combination remedy.

ADVANCED BACH FLOWER THERAPY is the book I regularly refer to and cross reference with another important reference text, APPLYING HOMEOPATHY & BACH FLOWER THERAPY TO PSYCHOSOMATIC ILLNESS, 2nd ed., by Cornelia Richarson-Boedler.

Highly recommend these two books for your library of flower essence and homeopathy references.

I am not a health practitioner of alternative or allopathic therapies. I try my best to maintain and improve my health by learning what is available to me to achieve good mental, emotional and physical health. I believe that "action follows thought" and that illness results from unhealthy/destructive/negative thoughts and emotions (conscious and subconscious).

This is by far the best Bach Flower text I have ever used. I repeatedly purchase it as a gift for lay people and mental health practitioners who are unfamiliar with homeopathy because the information is so complete and incredibly user friendly. The terminology is modern and well-indexed with multiple variations presented for each main topic.

I have almost all the books on the Bach Flower remedies and have used these WONDERFUL remedies for over 10+ years. This book should be added to everyone's Flower Remedy library. The information it contains is very concise and applicable. I must say that this book has given me even more reasons to appreciate these flower essences. You will find the descriptions of each remedy very useful. The remedy combinations listed in this book are very helpful. This book is a MUST!!

An excellent guide to the Bach Flower remedies. Blome gives a comprehensive explanation for all the flower essences. For instance, he describes the characteristics, effects and has psychotherapeutic notes for each essence. He also gives common combinations with other essences. There is a section on physical and emotional ailments and possible flower remedies to assist them.

Dr. Blome has a very good understanding of the Bach flower essences and how to use them. One of the best books on flower remedies. Highly recommended.

Nice book. I have the 2nd edition and compared it with the newer edition. The 3rd edition is much the same as the 2nd but with 2 additional chapters--one on "Mood Changes, Behavior Changes..." and then one on clinical CXR (chest x-rays). Helpful book for students.

Although the initial chapter on Clinical Reasoning and Differential Diagnosis is limited, it is a concisely written prelude to a wealth of focused symptom assessment strategies. As a practitioner and a faculty member in a nurse practitioner program, I have found this book to be an excellent teaching resource. Each chapter contains several of the most common symptoms related to a specific body system. For example, the cardiovascular and respiratory systems are represented by the symptoms of dyspnea, chest pain and cough. The overlapping of these systems is artfully woven together is a manner that consistently prompts the reader to be focused yet complete. Each chapter outlines key questions to ask and also provides analysis of the possible patient responses. Included is a relational inference between each symptom and age specific concerns. At the end of each chapter, the authors have developed "Differential Diagnosis" tables that are particulary useful to the novice nurse practitioner in a clinical setting. Overall the book's pocket size format lends it to easy reading and convenience.

I found this book to be very fascinating. Having grown up in the area and still having family in the area is what drew me to this particular book. I remember my father telling me about some of the people, as well as my mother-in-law who also resides in the area. I also have a daughter in medical school so I will pass this on to her so she can round out her understanding of all areas of medicine and people. The beautiful photographs added to this book. Anyone interested in the Adirondacks or in the medical field would find this book a must have for their collection.

As an allied health care provider (EMS) I cannot praise this book enough. Daniel Way is a truely remarkable Physician in an age where medicine as an art and calling has become a business and patients are easially lost in the system as only a diagnosis or case number. As someone who sees the depersonification of the medical practice every day and the endless referals, Dr. Way genuinely cares for his patients. Some of his vignettes are humorous, some are inspiring, and some display the raw cruelty of life and death. Dr. Way has a special gift in his writing that makes you feel as if you actually know the patient at the end of the biography. While reading this book I could almost sense the sights, emotion, and even the smell of where he was. As someone who has hiked, paddled, and biked all over the Adirondacks of New York State, this book's setting was all the more relative to me. This book should be mandatory reading for anyone that chooses to become a healthcare provider as it is a constant reminder as to what and who we chose our professions for. The medical community needs more people like Dr. Way.

You can tell by reading this book that the author is certainly no ordinary family doctor. The author, who happens to be my dad, shows without a doubt that he truly cares about his patients, and can find an intersting story behind any face that walks in for a checkup. From a World War II hero pushed to the brink of death countless times to a simple man spending his entire life in a rural convenience store, Dan Way's patient stories will make you laugh, gasp, and maybe tear up a little. Way compliments each story with beautiful pictures from a beautiful region that I've spent much of my life in: the Adirondack Mountains. This is definitely worth reading for anybody, particularly those interested in photography or those in the medical profession. Great job Dad!!!!

All In A Day's Work: Scenes And Stories from an Adriondack Medical Practice presents the ruminations of an experienced medical doctor whose home visits amid the Adriondacks allowed him to take in the beautiful scenery, capture photographs, and bring help to people who needed it, especially in a part of the nation with a high population of senior citizens. Full-color photographs illustrate every page, and the down-to-earth narrative text describes not only the beauty and majesty of the scenery, but also vignettes from the lives of patients, some stories uplifting, some heartbreaking. An emotionally moving portrait of land and the people who call it home.

This is one of my favorite books. I think I have purchased one for every family member. It gives a comprehensive look at conventional medicine, herbal medicine and homeopathy. What is particularly nice is that it gives the pros and cons of each treatment. After just being at my wits end years ago with going to my regular doctor and being prescribed antibiotics for a recurring infection this book gave me the tools to treat the problem and 6 years later I have never had another problem with the infection again. I can't stress enough how helpful this book can be, especially in a day and age when the doctor prescribes so many medications you need additional medications to combat the side effects from one or the other.

It was wonderful, very informative

Review Date: 2006-11-14
There is a recent surge of interest in the subject of Men's Health as it is well- known that on average women live longer, and have lower rates of mortality from major diseases, excepting Alzheimer's. This comprehensive guide presents in its opening sections a guide to healthy living, including a detailed covering of such topics as diet, exercise, dealing with stress, avoiding risky behavior etc. The aim is to enable the reader to understand how to improve his own life- style. The second section provides a medical guide to the 'systems of the body'.
The work is not focused on simply teaching us to try and extend life but rather how to make our lives healthier and happier.
My sense is that almost every reader will find some tip here or there which will improve in some way their health.

If you're trying to learn about amino acids this book is a good place to start. At just over 100 pages it's a bit short. For instance, the amino acid serine is covered in seven lines. It's also approaching 20 years old. Having said that it still provides a lot of useful info. And combined with "The Amino Revolution" by Robert Erdmann, PH.D., it can give you a pretty good idea of the potential benefits of amino acid supplementation. There's so much more to learn on this topic and I'm still waiting for the definitive amino acid book. Unfortunately, most doctors don't have a clue.

This excellent book is a valuable guide to the therapeutic use of amino acids. It explains how amino acids function as the building blocks of protein, and lists the metabolic paths of the amino acids, the qualities of the individual amino acids and the disease states in which amino therapy can be helpful.

The author discusses the essential aminos (that the body needs to get from food) and the non-essential ones (that are made in the body), and how these relate and interact with one another. The co-factors (vitamins, minerals and trace elements) of the individual amino acids are covered in detail.

The author provides valuable information on the therapeutic application of amino acid therapy, including a summary of therapeutic dosages and cautions. Some of the uses include treatment of depression (DL-Phenylalanine, L-Tyrosine), insomnia (Tryptophan), cold sores (L-Lycine), detoxification (L-Cysteine, Glutathione) and wound healing (L-Arginine and L-Glutamine).

An appendix provides the amino acid content of certain common foods (besides meat, other excellent sources are eggs, milk, yoghurt and chocolate). The book also provides the contact details of various organisations and contains a thorough index. I also recommend he Amino Revolution by Robert Erdmann and Meirion Jones.

I have had a copy for many years and have given copies to a grandchild and one child, since anxiety can be inherited (my father had it, and we also have hypoglycemia). I have also given the order forms in the back to friends. I first became aware of panic attacks as an eight year old, but I wasn't diagnosed until I was in my forties, and only after many counseling sessions for panic which didn't help. I found this book and it meant the end of Xanax for me. One doesn't have to read it all at once. The first things to learn are distraction and breathing exercises. Then move on to magnification and other thought control processes.

I first read this book in New Zealand.. and soon became hooked. Mainly as I suffer from anxiety and depression. I found it insiteful and cathartic. It helped me to understand more fully my idiosyncracies and attitudes, and gave me more peace of mind. It offers good advice on how to help combat these debilitating conditions and gain your life back. I would highly recommend it to anyone who suffers from these conditions, or lives with anyone who has them, to better understand what feelings are involved, and that no one ever chooses to suffer; for many reasons, it is simply how our brain reacts to difficult situations, and no one is to blame. An empathetic, yet highly practical book.

This is a newer edition; for more rave reviews from people who have been through the whole program, check out the older edition:

http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/customer-reviews/0446670537/

(The link will be slow because it has to rebuild "your" view, but just give it time).

If you really want to get better, if you're ready to do whatever it takes (because it does take hard work!), then this book can really help you take those steps. It's one of the few that are genuinely about "self-help" - how to gain internal strength and heal yourself. Good luck!

I purchased AROMATHERAPY FOR COMMON AILMENTS for the full page, breath taking photographs of 13 essential oil plants. But - it is much more. Illnesses and ways to heal these illnesses with essential oils are discussed. Massage techniques are illustrated and explained. Safety guidelines are outlined. Recipes for blends are given. This is a good book for the beginning aromatherapist. It can also be useful to the more advanced person. Shirley Price is a professional, practicing aromatherapist. Her love and respect for the profession shines through-out this text. Highly recommend!
