A reference book for whatever health problemReview Date: 2005-07-06
Have you ever wanted to corner a doctor at a party and pick their brain about your newest symptom or self-diagnosis, but social graces prevented you? Well this informative book is the closest you can get to that banter.
Breakthrough Heath is a medical reference book that you can refer to many times. It's written in a simple direct approach and broken down into alphabetized chapters on illnesses from alcoholism to wrinkles. Within each chapter, Dr. Rosenfeld writes about "the latest news" in current studies on subjects in the area of medication, treatments and the "bottom line," which incorporates his personal suggestions.
Some other subject's covered are: breast cancer, cold and flu, depression, diabetes, reflux disease, lupus, menopause, Parkinson's disease, sinusitis and stroke. If every time you read or re-read this book you discover one new thing to try or one more question to raise with your personal physician, it will certainly be worth the price.

A Health Encyclopedia That Anyone Can UnderstandReview Date: 2007-03-06
He addresses dozens of the issues that affect the quality of daily life in America such as obesity, Botox, bad breath, and unsightly skin rashes but intermixes this lighter fare with important and up-to-date advice on stopping most of our big-ticket killers such as breast, colon and prostate cancer, HIV and heart disease. Without being condescending, he offers it all in language any high school student could understand.
Two subjects I would have liked to have seen him include, are the modern CT screening test for coronary calcium, a now-proven technology to prevent heart attacks and the latest on lung cancer, the king of all malignancies. Exciting early detection in both areas has been in the news for some time and his popular readership could use the scoops. Next edition perhaps?
Of course any book that tries to keep up with the latest in medical advancement has some outdated elements before it leaves the printing press. But like buying a new computer, the effort is still worth it. The good news is that any home library equipped with different editions of Dr. Rosenfeld's many books will allow the layperson to research a particular medical issue by following how our understanding in the area has evolved over the past decade. Armed with this, plus a quick Internet search for the very latest, the patient can effectively become their own best advocate.

Good Information but in an Odd FormatReview Date: 2008-11-10
I like this book but find it tricky to use. It is hard to pinpoint exactly why the layout is so cryptic but I think it's just generally not an easy reference book. The information is there, just not in a speedy format.
Remedies are organized by type but *inside* those headings are the detailed charts for specific issues, like colds etc.. I guess, if you prescribe to the theory that one of these seven remedies will work for almost everything, it makes sense but I have found that I usually have symptoms that warrant another remedy so it doesn't really work for me.
Another thing that adds to the confusion is; 1) after the chart on symptoms there are more write ups and comparisons underneath as well as the main remedy's attributes. Some might find this a more detailed/comprehensive approach but I feel like I have to look 4 places to get the whole picture instead on just 1 or 2. I would have preferred the charts to be larger and more detailed over having to flip back and forth so much, and 2) There is another chart in the back with quick tips but this one has even fewer remedies listed, sometimes only one or two. I just keep feeling like I have to look here, there and everywhere to get the whole picture of the symptoms/remedies.
It would be nice, also if Kali Bich. were mentioned in the "colds" area, instead of just in the back under "sinusitis", as many head colds lead to sinus issues.
I am giving this a 4, despite my confusion with the book's layout, because it still has a lot of good information and I can tell that the author took a lot of time in considering the layout. I think, potentially due to the small layout of the book, it was just too hard to carry off and is not a huge quirk, just tricky to get used to.
I hope this helps...

An Elegant and Practical Form of MedicineReview Date: 2007-01-23
But I was in for a very pleasant surprise. The book is certainly designed for the beginner, but there is plenty of meat for the more seasoned homeopath.
The book is arranged into three parts:
1. Getting started in homeopathy
2. The seven remedies that should be in every medicine cabinet
3. A short alphabetical list of common ailments with suggestions for which homeopathic remedies to use
The first part is not only good reading for the beginner, but is also good preparation for anyone visiting a homeopath for the first time. Some of the questions that you may be asked - "At what time of the day are your symptoms worse? Are there any foods that you hate? What is you favorite type of weather?" - often seem a bit odd, so it is good to know why the homeopath will ask.
Dr. Shalts explains the seven principles of homeopathy:
1. The Law of Similars
2. Provings
3. Individualized Treatments
4. The Single Remedy
5. The Minimal Dose
6. Potencies
7. Hering's Principles of Cure
There are plenty of anecdotes to keep the material fresh and interesting.
In Part 2 he lays out his seven remedies with amusing memory aids:
1. Aconite: He calls this the Homeopathic Emergency Services Unit
2. Arnica: This one is the Homeopathic Surgeon
3. Belladonna: The Homeopathic Pediatrician
4. Chamomilla: This one is called the Homeopathic Babysitter
5. Gelsemium: The Homeopathic Neurologist
6. Ignatia: This is the Homeopathic Therapist
7. Nux Vomica: The Homeopathic Gastroenterologist
This section is very well done, with charts to highlight similarities and differences between remedies.
Part 3 has the list of conditions, and in addition to advice about which remedies to use, Dr. Shalts also suggests other helpful products and, most importantly, when to seek professional help. Some books on homeopathy look a bit like cookery books, but this one enables you to start thinking like a homeopath.
This is an excellent book for the beginner, but there is also much for the more seasoned user. Although it is advertised as a first aid book, there is actually far more inside. Even if you already know something about natural medicine, you will likely find a lot to interest you in this well written, attractive and inexpensive book.
Highly recommended.

The book has hundreds of pages, and the pages are printed very thin. Normally this would be a two or three volume boook set if were printed with the usual type of paper. It is well worth the money - no doubts about that! But do make sure your bookshelf is strong, too. Because this book is *heavy!* :)

AND THE TRUTH SHALL SET YOU FREE!!!
Unfortunately, Traditional Western Medicine has tended to ignore how much our hormones influence our Body, Mind & Spirit. I think the researchers decided that hormones were somehow just "too complicated." As a Psychologist, I work with a lot of clients who would prefer to find natural ways to support their mental and physical health, without taking drugs. Many of my clients would prefer NOT to go on antidepressants all month long, with their many side effects, just because they sometimes get depressed with PMS or Menopausal symptoms. Now Donna offers skillful ways to keep our bodies in balance, naturally. HOORAY!
This is a book you won't want to be without, whether you are wanting help with PMS, Pregnancy, Menopause, or just general health & vitality. This book is truly a treasure map, helping us to once again appreciate our amazing, miraculous women's bodies.
Thank-you Donna & David!

In the Appendix, there are 'Unknown Cases' for Self assessment, as well as common protocols, and other pertinent information that does not clutter the content of each chapter (as what has been done in the Requisites Series).
This is the best text for understanding nuclear medicine for a radiologist. I highly recommend this book.

National Board of Chiropractic Part III Study Guide: Key Review Questions and Answers with Explanations by Patrick Leonardi
National Board of Chiropractic Part IV Study Guide: Key Review Questions and Answers (Volume 1) and (Volume 2)
The questions in these last 4 study guides are right on with the kind of questions encountered on the National Boards. These 5 books contributed greatly to helping my study group and I pass the boards. For example the Part IV Study Guide had great sections on chiropractic technique, clinical impression and x-ray diagnosis. It presented the questions just like on the exam. These 5 books are must buys.

A Book for Every WomanReview Date: 2002-12-08
As a nurse-midwife and nurse-practitioner in women's health, I have come to appreciate the beauty in each and Every Woman and also how the practice of yoga can enhance that inherent beauty. Since the completion of my training, 15 years ago, I have been waiting for a book I can offer to ALL women. I feel EVERY WOMAN'S YOGA is this book. It is a book for the woman accomplished in yoga as well as for the woman who thinks yog(urt) is something you eat for desert.
One of EVEWRY WOMAN'S YOGA's greatest features is that it takes you skillfuly step-by-step from where you currently are in your yoga practice toward greater accomplishiment. A basic posture is first introduced and then a more challenging or an easier variation is given, allowing a woman to adjust her practice daily and thus continually progress. The author also intertwines these progressive steps in flexibility with the breath...the ultimate link between the mind and the body.
Another great feature of EVERY WOMAN'S YOGA is the author's encouragement for the woman to create her own practice...gone are the days of sitting isolated in a classroom for hours at a time...from feeling you missed the ship if you didn't get in that morning practice. NOW are the days of incorportating the practice into the whole day..doing pranayam while out for a walk....the pelvic tilt while waiting for the bus...agni sara in the the lunch line. HELLO MODERN YOGINIS!!!
The most valuable asset, however, is the continual references the author makes to the deeper aspects of yoga philosophy and training. These teachings encourage the woman to explore challenges in her ongoing spiritual journey. So while on the surface, the book seems to be dedicated only to yoga postures, it is really leading a woman on a deeper path.
If you have not read this book, I whole heartedly encourage you to give yourself a treat for the holidays !!!(and the rest of your life).

Dr. Sherer seeks to defuse the fears and forebodings prior to hospitalization - that threatening web of unfamiliar people, frightening equipment, and assault on privacy that is not only necessary but inevitable.
What may seem obvious to a doctor may be enlightening to a frightened patient or family member. Offering technical information, behavioral observance, and anecdote, the information is accessible and is replete with condensed case histories. Dr. Sherer has done a good job of anticipating what questions may arise, and of offering answers. Also helpful, he cites resources for further information, from the web or from publications and organizations.
This reader learned about the importance of carrying basic medical information in one's wallet (I have a rare blood type, for example) and the wisdom of keeping a living will. The concept of "Patient Advocate" was enlightening, as was the revelation that, as a patient, one can speak up if discomfort seems unnecessary - hospital protocol need not be entirely rigid.
Dr. Sherer, in this book, is offering good advice for increasing the safety and comfort level of any hospital stay. Significantly, he doesn't attempt to impress the reader with long-winded verbiage, but relays essentials in plain language.
