This plus "God's Way to Ultimate Health",Lyman's "Mad Cowboy" started it all for me around January. A good friend recommended to read Malkmus after she beat breast cancer by changing her diet! I knew then I had to understand the link between diet and health. I wasn't satisfied to read just this book but many of the others listed in the bibliography and others on biological medicine and others relating to the acid/alkaline balance within our bodies. Morter's "Your Health, Your Choice" helps us to describe what's happening and clearly spells out what implications diet has on our lives. Armed with this info I've been able to help my mother gain control of her arthritis and hopefully get her off methotrexate for good. I've been able to help my mother in law lower her cholesterol since prior strokes have made this an issue. And my wife and I have lost the weight we couldn't seem to shake and have been able to improve all aspects of our health and physical well being. If you have any loved ones who's quality of life you want help improve this book is a great start.

Ahead Of Its Time

I read this book in the early 90's. Ted Morter, D.C. was way ahead of his time when he released this book to the public. Unfortunately, good health is a person's choice and most people will take very little time to make inquiry into the matter. Also, although this book is reasonable and substantiated from a physiological standpoint, one has to break through the idolatry that exists where medical cures are concerned (i.e. antacids as a cure for stomach ills, argggh!).

I loved Dr. Morters explanation of the digestive process and the pH of each phase from salivation to stomach to duodenum. It is necessary to understand all this to understand what lengths our bodies will go to in order to "save the whole man". The body operates in its wisdom under dire circumstances, but we have a choice and an opportunity to get out of survival mode into health. And the answer is so simple and the logic impeccable.

Cancer and other disease thrive in an acidic environment within the body. Each food we eat leaves a residue of acid or alkalai in our system. Our body will do crazy things to counteract the acid-ash residue left from the SAD diet we are used to (Std. American Diet). Our body will pull calcium from the bones even to neutralize the acid in the system. Drinking more homogenized milk only aggravates the acidity.

Dr. Morter runs under the legs of the medical researchers and unlocks the mysteries...a simple answer to a plaguing problem. Now, ten years after I read the book, researchers are catching up to this book.

It's your health and your choice. If you won't invest the effort to read a little book and see if it compels you to make some basic adjustments, then you deserve the inevitable: poor health and misery---perhaps early exit. This book is great and it changed my life. Too bad it's out of print. It's a CLASSIC! I think that you could find it as a used book even. I still have my copy and don't lend it to anyone. Get it at the library if you must. Sincerely, "paris_match@hotmail.com"

basic principles of healthy diet

This is a wonderful book for learning the basics of nutrition. Dr. Morter exposes the protein myth and explains quite thoroughly the effects of alkaline verses acid producing foods on the body. He provides a guided tour that goes through all the digestive organs of the body showing how they are affected by an acid diet. I felt this book was presented in a very scientific manner. I used to have regular acid reflux problems. By reading this book I came to understand the implications of that on my overall health, and since reading it over two years ago I have never had indigestion again.

A way out for common health problems

The book gives me a new perspective towards "health" from the traditional "nutrition" way. This pH perspective takes a "total approach" towards health. You will know the real causes of some common illness like asthma, heart diseases, gall stones, mental illness, blood problems......which are actually caused by bad eating habits/choices. Then you will know how to find a way out from those diseases. The book is written in very simple language, an average people can understand it very easily. Having understood the reasons why we choose out food in a 8:2 ratio (8=vege, 2=protein/carbohydrate), it is so easy to apply the priciple in my daily life to stay healthy. It is recommended to read the other books from the author - Dynamic Health, An apple a day and Exercise or Diet.

Read this book! Your life may be in danger.

If you have any type of health problem, please read this book. You may not know it, but your food may be killing you. Your body can heal, but it may be in survival mode and it just doesnt have the chance. This book is very understandable and funny, yet gets technical enough to be convincing. The most beautiful part is that it is your chioce and your health. You can go as fast or as slow as you want. The section on exercise makes you rethink your exercise program. If you want to be healthy, read this book. If not, pass it up. It's up to you, and only you..

I don't even remember the details of why i liked this book so much, but I can tell you the way it made me feel. Maybe this was the first book that inspired me, or made me pick Psychology as my major. Maybe it was the fact it showed me that cancer survivors can live normal lives or it taught me about mind over matter.. it was such a long time ago but I know that I remembered this book---its like you see a good movie or read a book that makes you feel like you can acomplish anything! that's what this book did for me.

The author has personally recovered from cancer ( near death - just30 days to live), by living the laws, he suggests others to live by. The key passage is in chapter 19 where he discusses how he discovered the law of forgiveness and applied it in his case. Similarly the law of unity is an important observation. We are body, mind and spirit. The book is easy to read. He uses no jargons. He also emphasises how these laws are connected to each other.

Upon reading the first few paragraghs of this book, I knew it would be special. Anderson focuses on the holistic approach to living well. Laws such as being personally responsible for ourselves is especially relevent is these days where everyone claims to be a victim of something or another. The Law of Esprit: Realize that each day is a gift. The Law of Minimal Medical Invasiveness: You are the most important person on your medical team, not your doctor or anyone else. Take care of your health. The list goes on. Go ahead and buy this book; you will not be disappointed.

Greg Anderson's laws of wellness are not just words but actual laws you can live by. Each one can be applied to our own lives. I especially liked the the first law - the law of Esprit - the joy you feel is life! How true! I bought this book in 1998 and have read it several times. Yes, sometimes I need reminders on how I should be living. Excellent book.

Acupuncture Energetics by Joseph Helms is a very comprehensive textbook on medical acupuncture for physicians and practitioners with western training. It also encompasses most aspects of Traditional Chinese Medicine. For the western practitioner learning acupuncture for the first time, it brings you from a foundation of western medical knowledge and experience into the eastern paradigm. The book provides clear and precise anchors of knowledge and clinical examples illustrating the energetics of acupuncture in the context of TCM.

This is a cogent and compelling explanantion of an elegant approach to acupuncture, which will be useful for any physician interested in learning a new approach to helping his patients. Carefully blending western scientific theory with the ancient texts, Helms provides us with real life examples of how to use acupuncture to treat common pain problems and disorders of the spirit.

Though addressed to the physician population, this book is so clearly written that anyone with common sense and some basic biology can learn from it. The patient examples closely reflect our own selves or dear friends. This both enlivens and enhances quick understanding of the principles of acupuncture. Not only a good read, but good depth psychology.

Joseph Helms is a giant in the field of Medical Acupuncture. This text clearly spells out the French Energetic method of acupuncture, and the six energy axis. A distinct set of fictional personalities are described in order to help the reader understand the concept the the "functional biopsychotype". The text also describes other fundamental acupuncture concepts, such as five element theory. The binary code of the trigrams associated with each acupuncture meridian is addressed in the later chapters. Read it and read it again and again and again.

Acupuncture Energetics: A Clinical Approach for Physicians is an outstanding text. After taking the course I am using acupuncture in my dental practice for oral and craniofacial disorders. I have two copies of the text, one in the office and one at home. It melds, in a wonderful style, both eastern and western concepts and contains all that I need to know to feel confident in my approach to patients. Neither copy gathers any dust on the bookcase!

Excellent resource for anyone interested in Alzheimer's, especially for those who are at risk or have a loved one at risk. The most up to date information I've found, written for all of us to understand, and by a neurologist no less! My mother was recently diagnosed with Alzheimer's at only 75 years of age (intermediate stage), and both my maternal grandparents had Alzheimer's as well. I have sent this book to all my siblings...it gives some relief from the fear of heredity to be able to have an active role in the possibility of prevention. The first thing I did when I bought this book was to read the chapters on vitamins and supplements (and promptly added those to my daily regimen), only then did I find myself at chapter one.

Phenominal information...Great work Doc!!!

I found this book extremely helpful for anyone having questions about Alzheimer's. And that includes most people who intend to live to a ripe age! Also those who have relatives with the disease. It is written by a medical doctor but in layman's language, and it gives practical advice based on latest scientific research.

A must read for everyone!

This book is outstanding! I'm in my early 30s, but because my grandmother just got diagnosed with Alzheimer's, I am trying to find out as much about the disease as possible. This book is an extremely useful tool to: 1) learn more about how the disease will affect my grandmother as she progresses, and 2)learn about things I can do right now to help reduce my risk for Alzheimer's as I age. If I could recommend one book, it would be this one. It's easy to read and provides real answers to the questions we all seem to have. Since I finished the book, I've passed it along to other family members so they can benefit from the information, too.

Not just for Alzheimer's patients. This book is for us all

Dr. Sabbagh has written a book that has benefits for everyone. He lays out the science of Alzheimer's research in a way that is clear and understandable to the lay reader. Reading this book is like having a conversation with someone who cares. I recommend it to anyone with an interest in improving quality of life for themselves or loved ones.

Dr. Sabbagh makes it clear that Alzheimer's is an issue for us all. He describes current understanding of the disease without being afraid to admit that there are yet limits to what the scientific community knows about its treatment and prevention. He gives clear and simple suggestions for maintaining and improving brain health and overall health in general.

It is easy to see that Dr. Sabbagh cares deeply about his subject matter. His case studies are poignant and touching, and oftentimes inspirational. He makes it clear that it is his hope to eradicate Alzheimer's and work himself "out of a job." He sees this disease as a global concern that we all would be wise to learn more about.

What struck me the most about this book was Jennifer's honesty in telling her story. She bared her heart and soul. I was also inspired by her spirit of hope and investigation and her ability to meet her family's challenges straight on. Thank you, Jennifer. I want to tell everyone I know to read this book, so they can get in on the hopeful vibe. You'll never look at a stray animal in the same way.

There are few books I just can't put down. And Then Came Arthur is one of them. I really meant to get other pressing things done, such as the laundry, or finishing a client's press release, but I found myself enraptured for a glorious two hours, hooked to the book like nobody's business.

Jennifer Thie's story reveals the most important component of the human condition: resilience. We learn to walk by falling flat on our faces. Jennifer does that plenty of times in the book. You learn to love her and her family's story as if they were your own. It's a great read you will truly enjoy.

I found this book to be pretty good review for Part III. It helped with summarizing all the stuff I learned in chiropractic school. It gave good reviews of the clinical impression or diagnosis, physical examination, neuro examination, etc. I also used the following which was just awesome for showing me the type of questions to be prepared for on the Part III and Part IV chiropractic Boards:
National Board of Chiropractic Part III Study Guide: Key Review Questions and Answers with Explanations by Patrick Leonardi
National Board of Chiropractic Part IV Study Guide: Key Review Questions and Answers (Volume 1) and (Volume 2) by Patrick Leonardi.
In fact, Dr. Patrick Leonardi's and Dr. Jeannette Gibson's study guides helped me to pass the boards. I advise getting these four study guides. It's better than taking these boards over again.

A great book, but not for Part IV

I agree that this book is a great asset, and would recommend it to anyone in Chiropractic school, having previously stipulated that it will not prepare you for part IV. The book does indeed review Part III is great detail, but the part four review - with the exception some medical stuff, abdominal exam, thorax, etc. and some others, does not fully prepare you for Part IV. I found the last section on technique extremely lacking, there were no pictures, and very little on the method with which National Boards test you on (vertebral malposition listings [national listings]) since most of us were taught Gonstead (at least at Life West).

In conclusion, I recommend the Irene Gold review seminars. They may help more than this book will. It is a great book, but let's be real here, with the expense of Part IV National Boards ($850), it is cheaper not to buy this book and go to a review and get a passing grade, than to save in the beginning and fail the exam. That's the opinion of someone who used this book and studied in detail and failed the first time around.

No more wasted hours organizing; it is already done for you. Great book. Worth much more than the price tag. I can't endorse it enough. I gave it to my son, a chiropractor for Christmas, and it proves as useful in practice as it is in school. Much thanks to the authors for writing this book. Well done.

At first I thought this was too much information, then I realized it was everything I needed to know for my clinical studies as well as my academic studies. It is hard to understand how this book was written by doctors. I think professional editors would have a hard time negotiating this level of complexity. You both made it look simple and easy to follow. The amount of organization it contains is awesome. I am finishing up school now, and I only have one complaint about this text. It should've been handed out to the students on the first day of class with a schedule of which sections to learn for each year of study. It should be a required text for everyone. My life, my family, and my peers all would have benefitted from the decreased stress associated with a properly organized course plan. I probable could have saved thousands on coffee and actually slept instead of cramming this information for hours on end. This is an entire education between two covers. Thank you, thank you, thank you. My younger brother starts school in September and he is studying this book already! His life will be so much simpler because of it. I not only studied this material for boards, but due to the ease of which it is laid out I actually had time to learn it. You should write a business text next!

This book was worth the price for the "sniffles and snuffles" recipe alone! A single drop of that remedy and my chronically ear-infected, sinus infected child 18 month old easily without any cough syrup (which upsets his stomach violently).

This book is an excellent reference for those wishing to use essential oils on children. It breaks the oils for use down by age and each recipe gives allowable substitutions, so you can tailor it for the child with whom you are working.

I use both of Ms. Wormwood books extensively. She generously shares her knowledge and her craft.

I took an aromatherapy weekend seminar as an introductory to this fascinating subject. Was I surprised as to how interesting and versitile aromatherapy is. As a mother of 4 young children,I have always used natural medicine as a first priority and this has saved us many trips to the doctor and many doses of unwarranted antibiotics. I did not realize the potential that essential oils possess until I took the seminar. I bought this book after I took the seminar and have used it lots especially the oil blends for respiratory problems. I also have used her other book called The Fragrant Pharmacy and this book is LOADED with information. This lady knows her oils and is one of the best there is.You won't regret buying it!

Its not just for kids, each blend can be used on anyone.
I love the science of EOs, however this book doesnt offer that info on it, but does offer the BEST BLENDS I have ever used.
I know what each oil does, and even when I am sure of what oils I am going to use I find myself opening this book and each oil I have thought on my own to use because I know how great it is for a certain condition, is the oils she has mentioned to use.
Plus the ease of finding what you are need to a blend for is great. The A to Z type of format is wonderful.
As I mentioned I am aware of each oils chemical makeup and find this book to give the best oil for each conditoin.
This is a MUST HAVE. You will be so PLEASED.
Plus make sure to blend up the room disfect spray. I love this spray and use to so often.
BUY this BOOK you will always find yourself going to it.

Roberta Wilson has created a very useful, friendly, fun book. I have several books on aromatherapy and essential oils, and this is the one I refer to the most often. Ms. Wilson has included a reference section, which provides the folklore & herbal heritage, medicinal uses, emotional effects, primary actions, and cautions of each oil. There are many recipies to try and follow, along with suggestions for creating my own formulas, as well as ways to use the blends, such as in a diffuser, straight from the mixture bottle, etc. A resource guide, recommended reading, and bibliography are in the back of the book. I have other books on aromatherapy, but this one is the cornerstone of my collection, and the one I use most often.

Another fine guide book coming from the UK...

Very comprehensible and helpful for those using natural products such as aromatherapy.

The author also gives specific guidelines for those who wish to eliminate chemicals from the bath and beauty products..

Very intersting reading and a library must have!

THE book for beginner!

This is the book that started it all for me. Roberta Wilson puts aromatherapy into laymans terms. This book is facinating and revealing. She gives you the folklore & herbal heritage, medicinal uses, beauty benefits, emotional effects and primary actions as well as many formulas for common ailments. This book is my primary reference guide to date.

This book is not as comprehensive as the Encyclopedia of Healing, but for a book that balances 'western' and 'alternative' healings it is a good primer. I would have liked more diagrams and charts for Acupressure or other techniques instead of the lists of where to find practicioners... I like it because I have some serious health stuff that requires a lot of interaction with the 'western' medical community (to my gratitude), but want to supplement and perhaps mediate some of the side effects of the 'western' treatments that keep me alive. I like Dr. Altschuler's tone, very readable and accessible. Glad to have it on my shelf.

This book is the most complete health reference I have come upon. Altshuler isn't bantering on about one method of treating pain but gives holistic advice as well as specific treatments for each ailment. This book gives many options for every problem, giving a list of choices and alternatives that enable the reader to have an active role in their own health. Each recommended medication is discussed and he talks about taking precaution on some medications which may have side effects or can be dangerous if combined with other drugs. Altshuler also gives nutritional advice and therapy suggestions which are not often available to patients. I recommend this book highly and suggest that you take a look at it to see if it can help you as this book has helped me.

Finally, a book that authoritively blends modern medicine with effective alternative therapies!!! I find the information contained therein accurate and very valuable; it should prove to save many many folks a lot of $$$! The fact that it's written by someone who actually PRACTICES this kind of medicine, as opposed to someone who just does a literature search on med-line and writes a rehash of someone elses work, is a God-send. I highly recommend this book to anyone who wishes to play an active role in their own healthcare and potentially save a small fortune in needless trips to the doctor. Bravo, Dr. Altshuler!

This book is wonderful!

I have found it difficult to navigate through the confusing and often contradictory sea of information on alternative medicine available on the internet, though word of mouth, and on book shelves.

Given the amount of information contained with in this one text, one would think it was inaccessible or filled with jargon that the layperson cannot comprehend; with "Balanced Healing" this is not the case. Dr. Altshuler has given the reader an incredible wealth of information organized in a way that puts real solutions at their very fingertips. Whether you are recovering from an ailment or just turning over a new leaf to a healthier lifestyle, Dr. Larry Altshuler has written the book for you!

I highly recommend this book!

I love this author. This is just one of his many wonderful books. He has a way of using few words but communicating so much story. I think, The Puddle, by McPhail is my favorite.

Like the other reviewer, I laughed out loud when we read this book. The depiction of the father is hilarious.

I really wish, however, that we had a larger hardcover version of this story because the illustrations are fantastic.

Early McPhail Bears Reading!

This appealing little book is an early effort by prolific author/illustrator David McPhail. Although the colors seem somewhat muddied (I have a copy published much earlier than the one available from Amazon.com), and McPhail's illustrations perhaps not his best, there is an unmistakable "McPhail look" to the bodies and faces that he draws. The book has a great opening: A young boy in bed hears a giant "OOOOOO" outside his window, the `0's floating through the dark sky like a train of fluorescent cheerios. He looks out his window to discover its source: "It was a bear [the sentence continues on the next page] with a toothache.

In typical McPhail fashion, the unusual and the impossible become the ordinary. This is a large part of the book's humor and excitement: "I invited him in [next page] and examined his teeth." The boy's efforts to extract the hurting tooth results in much bearish behavior, and that spells minor disasters in the small house (e.g., the bear eats all the food; a lamp is broken). The boy's father gets involved, but only briefly:

"'What happened to the lamp?' he asked.
`It fell on the floor,' I answered.
`Oh,' he said, and he went back to bed."

McPhail wisely makes this a private relationship between bear and boy only; there are no adults to negotiate or help. In this way, the little boy acts like a much bigger boy, and kids will appreciate this touch. The low-tech, crosshatched illustrations also add to the book's intimacy. There's a successful resolution (it archetypal pre-dentist fashion, the bear's tooth is tied to a rope...), and "The Bear's Toothache" concludes in the same unassuming manner in which it began. A fun book for small fry, although it appears that (in my older edition) the color reproduction doesn't quite meet the usual high standards of Greenwillow Publishing. Still, highly recommended!

Such fun!

I read to children weekly at Border's Bookstore and they love this book! It is so much fun to read and the children really get involved in the dilemma the boy has: trying to repair the bear's toothache. The portrayal of Dad is hilarious and all too familiar to parents. It is a delightful book your child will not soon forget!
