I have been in medicine for 32 years and this is one of the best books I have ever read in regard to medicine. We get so focused on the problem as a part that we become blinded to the patient as a whole. The more technical we get the further away from the patient we get. And yet I have seen what a difference it makes to "lay on of hands". Remember you should always touch the patient no matter if it is just to shake hands. We are creatures of touch not of electronics and lab results. I would recommend that this be read by everyone in the medical field.

I just recently ran across this book, not having been aware of its existence. It took awhile for me to get through it, because it was filled with so many riveting stories, and each story is such a teaching. I wish I had had such a courageous role model when I was in medical school. Dr. Lown's words empower me even more now, as I practice Mind-Body medicine. Abby Caplin, MD. San Francisco, CA

I was assigned this book in an East/West compartive medical class for College, and everybody loved it not just as a literary work but guide to life. Lown shares an ability with Dr. Andrew Weil in that his compassionate and balanced philosophies on life and medicine are backed up and validated by hisscientific knowledge. This book is just as much official text as it is commentary. Most anyone with an interest or passion in medicine or the healing arts would find enrichment from "The Lost Art of Healing."

I bought a copy for myself, and now I am trying to give a copy to everybody I know who is involved in patient care. Most of us went into the medical field with noble aspirations to take care of others and in doing so, to grow ourselves as human beings. The process of going through a medical education debases in many respects our initial aspirations. I read this book and found myself recentered. Dr. Lown approaches medicine as an opportunity to glean from the people for whom he cares. The book is filled with anecdotes gathered from decades of doctoring. The stories lead the reader along the same journey that the author has taken in coming to a sense of himself as a healer. The characters whom have filled his life are interesting and the story of Dr. Lown's personal journey from medical student, to researcher to teacher and master clinician, is fascinating. I highly recommend this book. It has changed the way that I approach my work and given me a zest for opportunities to grow in this profession.

In a profession dominated increasingly by science and technology, it is heartening to hear a courageous voice who spoke forcefully and emphatically against the dehumanization of medicine and for the urgent need to return to the traditional ethos of medicine. This coming no less from a physician of Dr Lown's stature and credentials, a technological wizard who had given the world the first cardioverter and DC defribillator. and yet managed to stay aloof and above the lure of medical scientific and technical sophistry which had captured the awe and fantasy of many of today's medical students and doctors alike. Debunking the myth of the omnipotence of clinical medicine, Dr Lown sought to reconcile the divide between the art and science of medicine, advocating a more humane approach towards the management of patients. He is both a philosopher and a healer, equipped with an open mind and divergent mindset extending beyond the normal confines of medical practice. As a young medical student struggling with the heavy workload imposed by an explosion of medical scientific knowledge, Dr Lown's book is thought-provoking and inspiring, a timely reminder that knowledge and academic grades are merely a means to an end and that human qualities such as empathy, compassion and a sound understanding of the human condition is not only crucial in medical practice, but must be reinforced and developed in the impressionable medical student navigating through rigors and constraints of his studies and training.

An excellent book on magnetics, easy to read and understand. I was introduced to magnetic health products by a friend and have never felt better in my life. Sleeping on a magnetic mattress has convinced me of the power of magnets in health and wellness. I have a 10 year old springer spaniel with hip displaysia who also sleeps on magnets, she is an entirely new dog, more energetic and with less discomfort. After reading this book I can now comfortably talk magnets with my friends and family and highly recommend their use for a better quality of life.

Dr. Ronald Lawrence once again displays his views on "other forms" of health care. Having been an advocate of "alternative medicine" for many years one can read this book with joy and anticipated insight by a doctor that is steps ahead of the rest when it comes to alternative health care in the USA. Highly recommended reading for all.

This book helped me learn how to apply magnets to my body, what to expect, and how to communicate this knowledge to my neurologist. After suffering from a spinal cord injury and a cervical fusion the remainder of my discs were collapsing and I was suffering from horrible headaches and muscle spasms. Neurologists said I needed more operations and would end-up in a wheelchair if I didn't have them. Now, my doctor cannot believe the change and either can I. This book is VERY easy to understand and was hard for me to put down. I have recommended it to several people with disabilities of all sorts. We all know there is no magic wand. However, Dr Lawrence has relayed all the important information about the benefits and also misconceptions of magnet therapy. This book has helped me find a way to live with a problem I've had since a car accident in 1991. Get the facts so you dont waste your money on the many different magnetic devices on the market. Be an informed consumer and be pain free. I look forward to more of his writings on this topic.

Just some of the information Kauffman provides on blood pressure myths:

A. Did you know that the higher blood pressure reading should be 100 + your age? Neither did I.

B. Older women get higher blood pressure than older men, but live longer nevertheless and there's no need for medication unless blood pressure exceeds 180 (and even then the medication is not really of much help compared to the nutritional supplementation of magnesium, vitamin C and omega 3 EFAs). This is NOT what we've been told - if we had, pharmaceutical companies would make billions less each year.

C. When allowance for age is made, less than 5% of older people should be treated for high blood pressure (and even then the medication is not really of much help, especially compared with the benefits of nutritional supplementation of magnesium, vitamin C and omega 3 EFAs).

D. Conventional advice about exercise and diet does not work, after which they give you the drugs.

E. Diuretics: everyplace you might search, internet or otherwise, is unanimous that diuretics are beneficial for high blood pressure. Kauffman shows that the maximum possible benefit is 1.5 days extra of life after 5 years of taking diuretics! Yet diuretics have awful side effects; that's why you find strong warnings against taking diuretics for weight loss purposes.

F. Vasodilators, Beta-Blockers, Calcium Channel Blockers, ACE Inhibitors and Angiotensiin Receptor Antagonists are all proven to either be more dangerous than beneficial or to be working only because, despite terrible side effects, they help with retention of potassium and/or magnesium. Why not just take magnesium and potassium supplements? Oh yes, of course, because drug companies do not profit from nutritional supplements.

There's so much more. There's no real evidence that moderate drinking of red wine is beneficial yet the far superior anti-oxidant capability of 1 gram of Vitamin C goes unremarked; cancer cure rates have not changed much in the last forty years, the "success rates" merely refer to a 5-year survival rate but with terrible quality of life after chemotherapy and the like. Perhaps worst of all: for over a decade there has been a quick and simple blood test for many types of cancer, costing just $200, (the Anti-Malignin Antibody in Serum (AMAS) test) but most doctors don't know of it!

The book is not an easy read, but is so loaded with useful information you will constantly refer to it. If you care about your health, or that of those around you, this is a must read book.

One of the most remarkable examples of herd behavior among humans is their tendency to create and believe lore about medicine. Although biomedical researchers consider themselves above all this, as Kauffman shows, they are not. Without engaging in either inflated rhetoric or florid outrage, Kauffman exposes and dissects conventional wisdom in a careful selection of conditions that affect large numbers of people. Despite the occasional misstep, he puts the evidence and argument out on the table for us to see and judge. We cannot ask for more. When you are finished reading it, send it to your doctor.

If you care about your health, or that of those around you, this is a must read book.

This certainly isn't a book you can simply skim read. It took me a while to ponder about the impact this might have (I'm a medical student). The arguments are very well presented; he puts all the studies in front of you and analyzes them in a relevant manner.

What I consider to be a minor flaw in the book: the author sometimes concludes that certain differences in mortality are "negligible" when I don't think they are negligible. Certainly though, improvements in mortality rate are far easily attainable via fish oil, magnesium and other quality supplements.

I would love to see a new version of this book, further exploring and digging through the literature on various drugs and supplements.

This book has saved me hundreds of dollars, since I always cross-check claims by commercial companies that sell complementary products--and who usually provide artfully deceptive ways to make it appear as though vitamins, herbs, and other supplements are the "answer" to everything from arthritis to herpes zoster. Clearly presented with an impartial and reasoned conclusion regarding the efficacy of a vast number of natural healing consumables. It provides recommended doses when a product is given the thumbs up, and warns against common assumptions many of take for granted owing to media overexposure. When research is presented that purports to support the medicinal qualities of a product, the authors provide a careful analysis of the strength of the reserach, whether its been replicated, and whether other research has been done that has had less stellar findings. A brief history of natural products is provided whether its an herb used for thousands of years or a current fad that is prevalant in other health care systems, particularly in Europe. I do have ONE MAJOR disappointment, however. Where is the UPDATED edition? This book is now six years old; much has happened in the world of conventional and natural medicine in that time, and without such a reference guide it would require endless searching to learn of newer findings.

Truly an indispensable reference!

I feel it is very important that I have a good source of information aside from that which is available from the company for which I sell natural supplements. I'm often frustrated by the limited acceptance of herbal supplements and remedies in the U.S., especially those which are widely used in Europe, China, and other parts of the world. This book states "principal proposed treatments" (those which have been tested successfully in the U.S.) and "other proposed treatments" (those not tested in the U.S., but are often used in other countries). It gives details about recommended dosages, safety issues, medical interactions, etc. So far, it has provided me with information about almost every ingredient I've searched for, and has made me feel much more confident about recommending the products I sell! There is a section regarding health problems and the recommended products for treating them, then another section of herbal substances and their recommended uses. The information is alphabetized, with shaded tabs on the edges of the pages for quick look-ups. It is so organized and easy to use, it's not only the first book I reach for when I need information, often it is the ONLY book I need!

The 17th edition of the Nelson Textbook of Pediatrics is available now. I have seen it on the publisher's website. This textbook is one of the main physician-level educational sources for pediatrics, and I highly recommend it for the personal libraries of all medical professionals as well as those in training. No matter what your field, there will always be the potential that you will become responsible for caring for a child. However, it is usually best to find the latest edition for any textbook.

There is no other Pediatrics book out there that is better than this one. Don't waste your money on less expensive books like Current Pediatrics which doesn't cover half as many topics as Nelson. Also, for a great little pocket books, try Harriet Lane and Current Clinical Strategies Pediatrics 5 Minute Review.

Useable and Useful -- without hype or hyperbole

This book was first published in 1988 -- and that's the year I first bought it. I wore out the first copy, gave 3 as gifts, and I'm now handling my second copy gingerly as it is close to falling apart.

I have a library of herbals starting with one published in the 18th century, and including some wonderful books from the 21st. But this is the book I always go to first. It has the clearest and most organized presentation -- and the most beautiful illustrations of any herbal I've ever encountered.

Since it was written, there have been a dozen or so additions to the "must have" list of modern herbs, so it is far from exhaustive --and with the ongoing research and discovery of useful botanicals, every herbal is eventually incomplete. Additionally, a few of the herbs referenced here have fallen into disuse due to legitimate research into side effects and potential for harm among certain populations -- so do your homework. Never (NEVER) take one book's or one person's word for anything as complex as your health.

And there is no political agenda to this book. The "New Age" in the title is a sign of the time when it was written -- There is no heavy handed political agenda here. No treatise on why you should never listen to an M.D. or take an aspirin. I simply does what an herbal is supposed to do -- it describes the botanicals and talks about their possible usefulness, their history, and groups and regroups them in ways we now expect from a well crafted database.

And excellent book for beginners and a great shelf reference for the experienced. The top of the list.

If you're into herbalism in the least this book is absolutely and totally essential. It has full-color photographs of most of the major herbs in both their natural and harvested (dried/powdered) states. It also lists a wealth of information on each herb from it's Latin name, common names, basic plant and chemical characteristics, homeopathic uses and quite a bit more. There are priceless reference charts in the back of the book with outstanding information about herb harvesting and cultivation in other sections. It's a bit pricey but it's full-color and WELL worth it. I NEVER loan my copy out. It's that valuable to me.

Herbs are medicine. As great as the illustrations and explanations are in this book, the authors could deal a deadly blow to those who aren't ready to be herbalists. People are taking herbs like prescriptions and need to know that vitamins are food, herbs are medicine, and a more holistic approach is necessary before delving into plants. Try reading, "Forget The Cures, Find The Cause," by Rayna Gangi before purchasing this book.

The New Age Herbalist --a necessity for studying herbs
Helpful Votes: 8 out of 8 total.
Review Date: 2004-04-28
I believe that anyone caring for themselves ought to have at least 3 books on herbal actions. For studying the herbs more broadly, one would need a number of herbals (herb books) A general book is good for an overview, or quick reference, but doesn't give enough depth on any subject. "New Age Herbalist', for me, is the best for herbal indentification because it contains actual colored photos of herbs, not tiny drawings. It has an impressive amount of color plate pages for the price.
I don't think of it as a "new age" book because it would impress a scientific mind with its listing of active chemical ingredients of each herb. The rest serves as a fine overview guide also, and has a great section on homemade bath products.
I feel a need to have a book for quick reference, several for deeper knowledge on each herb, several for identification, several for historical uses, at least one for gardening and drying, a mini quick reference for traveling. When you have a headache, you don't want to be reading about how to get rid of soil bugs. Hope this helps.

You will initially survive a nuclear attack. This is the initial premise of Cresson Kearny's outstanding manual on nuclear war. Only a small number of people would be killed in the initial explosion of a nuclear blast, whether it is from a massive Russian or Chinese attack, or even a more limited terrorist attack. The `conventional wisdom' is that there is no reason to prepare for a nuclear attack as everyone will be wiped out, most quickly and painlessly. This wisdom is completely wrong. Kearny explains in great detail what will happen during a nuclear attack, what the obvious and not so obvious dangers are, and what you should do to prepare yourself. This book was originally published in the 1970s at the height of the Cold War, but is perhaps even more relevant today given the increased threat of limited nuclear attacks by terrorists or other non-state forces.

Simply put, this is a User's Manual for civil defense. What to do before a nuclear attack is likely, and how to avoid many of the post-attack dangers (particularly fallout). I'm actually surprised that this information isn't more widely disseminated in the US. In fact, among the public, there is almost no public awareness or even recognition of civil defense, only that the `government' must have plans in place to deal with catastrophes. This is a dense tome filled with details, but even a small amount of information in this manual could be vital to an individual's or family's survival after a nuclear weapon is detonated near their home.

This manual includes information on the effects of a thermonuclear detonation, how much damage is done, how wide spread it would be, the dangers of fallout, how to mitigate the effects of fallout (probably the single most important aspect of the book), how to build a shelter (both a quick, expedient shelter, and a more elaborate shelter if you have the time), the effects of radiation sickness, preparations for storing food and water, and how to build a simple but effective radiation detector. There is enough detail to keep a hardcore survivalist busy for years, but you don't need to be a hardcore survivalist to find this useful. This manual also includes enough basic information that the average American should be aware of that could make the difference between life and death. Many of the problems/issues addressed by Kearny are also relevant to other types of natural disasters or crisis situations, not just a thermonuclear attack.

I have to agree with another reviewer that this manual would also be of great use to authors who want to write about nuclear war. Even if you don't think that a nuclear attack is all that likely (or you truly are living at ground zero and won't survive the initial blast), I found this to be an interesting, readable account of what to do. You can find this manual online for free, but the nice bound edition is definitely worth the $20 in my view. Highly, highly recommended.

The bomb!
This is a government sponsored field manual that tells individuals how to prepare for and how to survive "the bomb". And as preparedness books, and Government manuals go - this book is the BOMB!

Many books on survival and preparedness are shallow, poorly researched and untested, fear mongering or written with a social or political bend. Or the advice of the book amounts to - "Sit tight, take notes, wait for government officials, they will save you". This book is none of those things. It was written by Cresson Kearny - a Rhodes scholar who was working as a research engineer at the Oak Ridge National Laboratory at the time that he was asked to write this book. His other qualifications include (but are not limited to!) serving in WWII - where he worked on testing and improving jungle combat gear for US soldiers. As a demolition specialist in China (during a portion of the Japanese invasion). He was re-recruited by the US military for combat gear improvement for US soldiers in Vietnam. He also traveled the world trading knowledge with other countries on protecting civilians from the effects of a nuclear war. Etc, etc.

Mr. Kearny has thoroughly researched and thought through the most likely scenarios (most relevant at the time that he wrote this book) and gives step-by-step solutions on how to deal with each problem. His solutions are simple, tested and can be implemented by almost all individuals. He advocates looking out for yourself, and gives advice on how to do so.

Although this book was specifically written to address a massive nuclear war with Russia - the knowledge and approaches in this book can be applied to all disaster scenarios. Some of the things he covers:

-Facts and myths about nuclear bombs.
-Mental preparations
-Warnings that a bomb has gone off/ are on their way.
-Communications
-Evacuations - when/ where...
-Shelters, building several quick, effective fallout shelters (all tested by him and by "average American families").
-living in the shelter - water, food, CO2/fire dangers, ventilating the shelter, light, sanitation, medical, furnishings, clothing, cooking, how long to stay in there...
-detailed instructions and templates used for building a radiation meter from common household items! (Invented by him - the "Kearny Fallout Meter" or KFM)
-detailed instructions and templates for construction of a homebuilt ventilator.
-where to find food and antibiotics for you and the rest of the country, how to process that food so that it can be eaten by adults and children. (And how to build any tools needed to process that food).
-special dietary considerations for children.

The information is presented in a - this is what is important and here's how an average person should/could go about doing this - manner. Very simple, very straightforward, very hands-on.

I have only scratched the surface on the wealth of practical information contained in this manual. Buy it! Then buy one for a friend!

Note: This book is available as a free PDF download (do a search on: Nuclear War Survival Skills PDF download). I recommend downloading it and reading it. I suspect you will then want to have a hard copy on hand too.

4-17-07 Addendum: one of the assumptions of this book was that our satellites (USA) would show missiles being fueled and fielded, and cities being evacuated. This would give us a 2-3 day advanced notice of a major power's (Russia's and/or China's) nuclear launch. This is no longer a good assumption.
Events that have occurred since this book was written:
-Russia has built and actively maintains excellent permanent shelters for most of its population.
-Russia has upgraded its missiles (and continues to actively do so).
-China has maintained and is actively improving its excellent system of shelters and underground facilities.
-China has upgraded its missiles (and continues to actively do so at an alarming rate).

When using this book keep in mind the above changes - ie don't count on the USA having a 2 day warning.

There are a number of do-it-yourself guides to civil defense available, but most seem to be aimed at hard-core survivalists who have crack outdoor skills, and lots of specialized equipment. This book is very different and is written for the average citizen by a former U.S. Army officer, field geologist and civil engineer who built and field-tested the "expedient" shelters described within while still employed at the U.S. Department of Energy's Oak Ridge National Laboratory.

These shelters can be put togeather within a few hours by ordinary, untrained men and women. (It is a good idea to take a weekend and practice building them.) They provide good protection during the weeks it may take for fallout to decay to negligible levels of radioactivity. (Expedient blast shelters, which also protect against the shockwave from a nearby explosion, are also discussed.)

The author is clear and thorough throughout, supplying checklists for supplies, equipment and materials; detailed building instructions and descriptions of the genuine (as opposed to fanciful) effects of nuclear weapons. There is also a valuable discussion of the purchase and use of potassium iodide compounds for protection of the thyroid gland from absorption of radioiodine. Finally, detailed plans and instructions are provided for the construction and use of a homemade fallout meter(!) to indicate radiation levels. (It is a lot more accurate than many of the over-priced, defective-or-uncalibrated war-surplus "Geiger counters" on the market!)

The 2001 edition contains a new chapter on the hazards of trans-Pacific fallout, which could drift eastward to the U.S. mainland from a nuclear conflict in Asia. (Such as India vs. Pakistan, or a North Korean nuclear attack on the South or Japan.) There is also a new appendix detailing the persuasive medical and scientific evidence that low levels of ionizing radiation below a certain threshold do no harm to humans or other forms of life, or their descendants. In fact, it may make them healthier. (Far from being crackpot, this concept is known in Biology as "hormeisis" and is dicussed in a recent article in DISCOVER magazine; see "Is Radiation Good for You?", DISCOVER Vol. 23 No. 12, December 2002.) This should help to dispel the superstition that radiation is some sort of magic poison, and that any amount is deadly.

Anyone not living in a fool's paradise realizes that the chance of a nuclear detonation in an American city is probably higher now than it ever was when the United States and Soviet Union were locked in mutual standoff. Nuclear deterrance may have worked even on hardened Soviet or Chinese apparatchiks; but to to depend on it alone now against psychopaths and apocalyptic fanatics is to invite hideous disaster.

If I could rate this book 6 stars, I would.

This is truly a remarkable book. It contains a compendium of knowledge on civil defense approaches for surviving a nuclear war. Much of this material will apply directly to impact threats from asteroids and comets. It's a book you can stake your life on.

This is it...

This is 'the' guide for surviving a nuclear disaster. The author worked at Oak Ridge Nuclear Facility and the government asked him to write this guide. It can be download off the web for free, but I'm a big fan of books...they still work when the power goes out. Explains the effects of a nuclear explosion as well as fallout and how to protect yourself and family. Though the drawings are a bit simplistic and 1950-60ish it gets the point across. The supply lists and preparation lists can be applied to many major disasters.

Dr. Batmanghelidj was an amazing man, and an even more amazing MD.

Before I had heard or read anything about this blessed person, I had begun drinking more water, from personal experience with spinal disc problems, realizing that a type of chronic, mild dehydration seemed to aggravate that condition, and retaining enough water kept it at bay.

After reading this book, "Obesity, Cancer, & Depression: Their Common Cause & Natural Cure," I comprehended more of the reasons and physiological facts (which are presented in easily comprehensible terms) for what I had already instinctively accepted on my own.

Also, from this book, I learned why salt is so vital a companion with water, and how natural sea salt, from which the accompanying minerals have not been removed, is vitally different from table salt. I learned more clearly how to successfully manage my daily routines of sea salt and water.

I have always loved salt and used it liberally, never having bought the "program" against it, and I've always craved natural, salt-cured ham and bacon (which is hard to find in these days of insane conflicts on what's actually healthy; I hope to write more on that later, in a blog entry on my Amazon-Connect Author Profile Page). I'm very thankful to this book, though, that I now understand what table salt has been lacking (which it had in its natural beginnings, but purveyors had removed).

I've reviewed several sea salt offerings on Amazon, and am still happily using those I purchased from Pacific Resources Organic Sea Salt, Coarse Ground, 2.2-Pound Bag (Pack of 4) and Coarse Granulated Original Himalayan Crystal Sea Salt, though I still recommend all the salts I reviewed. The mineral content in some are different, depending on where they are collected. I liked the fact that magnesium is in the Pacific Resources salt, because that is one of the minerals I have been deficient in, causing horrible cramping attacks which are immediately relieved by that sea salt, as my review explained. If not for Dr. Batman, however, I would not have learned the vital differences among types of salts (which I began studying on Amazon's buying pages, after I had read this book).

There's a lot more valuable information in this book than what I've mentioned here. This book should be a health resource on every "coffee table"... (Oops! Sorry! Couldn't help that caffeine humor slip. Read the book to see the inside joke.)

I would recommend any and all of Dr. Batmanghelidj's offerings on the Water Cure. I chose this one to begin with because, from what I could tell from my research, it was the most recent he had published, actually fairly close to his death. What it explains most clearly is how most diseases have been identified with separate, ugly medical terms; yet all of them (including aging) appear to relate directly to a single cause. Chronic, low-grade dehydration.

I'm deeply thankful that this man was able to impart his considerable knowledge and wisdom prior to his returning to his place in heaven, which he has earned many times over.

We weren't born to live forever. At least not yet in this time and space incarnation. But while I'm here, I would like to be as pain free and productive as possible. Dr. Batmanghelidj's collected knowledge has greatly assisted me on both those fronts.

Due to the work he has left with us, I'm sure this man is in a state of ultimate peace.

With undying respect (and humor slipping freely, as I believe this man's spirit would appreciate),

This book is wonderfully well written and I gained a lot of understanding from reading it. I was afraid of cancer before reading this book. Now I know cancer does not have to be something we dread or have to go through proceedures that kill more than the cancer to help us overcome it. I am rereading and rereading to gain the understanding on the obesity section of the book . The depression section also helped me to understand what I had gone through all those long years and why those drugs messed me up further. I don't have to go there again. Read all of the books written by F.Batmanghelidj, they are all very well written in laymans terms and encouraging. Blessings to you and yours... love ,Kay

Let's see. Our body is 75% water (so is the surface area of the earth). Our brain is 80% water. Need we say anymore?
