I got a note from an amazon customer, congratulating me on my quitting. For all the ones that will be cosidering this book now and feel it is impossible to quit, I strongly reccomend it and its methodology. I myself, after seeing my father quit smoking when he had his third heart surgery and my mother after her eye surgeries, thought I would not be able to do it. However, today is June 6 2007 and since Dec 20 1998 I have been smoke free. Should you know someone who needs help to quit smoking, I am willing to be part of the network support.

I was able to quit! This was my Bible during the Storm.

This book helped me realize that I too can quit, and for good!!! It carefully explains statistics, effects and mortality rates, be it gender or age. Each step is very clear and very easy to follow. The Pack Track, notes and defense mechanisms that are given to you in this book will help anyone kick the butts for good!!! Very easy reading and easy on the eyes. Step by step until you are smoke free is the success that comes with this book. Mr. Fisher and Mr. Koop did an outstanding job on this book. The alternatives and attitude changing methods toward smoking are simply superb. Realizations are met on all sides of quitting in this book. From the ones who have quit numerous times to the struggle of relaspes. This book has it all covered. Hypnosis, gum, patches, fading, or whatever method exists, is clearly explained and can be tailored to suit anyone's need on any level!!!

Fantastic Read! I found this to be a completely heartfelt realistic view of the life of a smoker trying to quit. The tongue-in-cheek humor actually comes across as a coping mechanism instead of snarky storytelling. It is easy to find yourself truly caring about this person and wanting them to succeed!

Wow! As a Respiratory Therapist, I work with people everday who are suffering the debilitating pulmonary effects of years of smoking. Most of my patients want to quit and just can't. From a scientific point of view I can understand how difficult it is to quit but I never thought about the emotional hold smoking has on people until I read "A Life in Smoke".
I was hoping that Julia's book would help me obtain some insight of how my patients feel about their smoking and their many failed attempts to quit. It did just that. I never realized the intimate friendship that people have with their cigarettes and what a important part of their survival those cigarettes are. I believe the book helped me to become more understanding, more empathetic and less judgemental. I'm going to recommend it to all of my co-workers.

For the first time, I have a glimpse into what it's like to be a smoker and why they do it. I've never understood the call of cigarettes--the few times I've tried one, I haven't felt a 'rush' or anything compelling me to have another, just a smokey icky taste in the mouth. Julia Hansen's tales of smoking and how she used the habit as a way to keep people and emotions at bay touched me deeply. There's a twist at the end that's both not surprising and disappointing, but you'll have to read it. An author who has found her voice, I hope she writes more.

As an avid never smoked non-smoker, my eyes were opened to the complexities of trying to break this one little habit. I have much more respect for my friends and family members that have accomplished this feat through the years. Hats off to Julia for not letting past defeats lessen her determination. This book is a thumbnail view into the highs and lows of her very interesting life. It is a great read for anyone interested in how other people handle everyday life.

Revealing and insightful book on becoming smoke free

I've been a certified hypnotist with the National Guild of Hypnotists (Nashua, NH) since 1993. A lot of the techniques that Connie Palinsky has revealed in her book are tried and true techniques that get positive results. I have used them myself with clients and they successfully quit smoking.

You don't need to be a hypnotist to get real value from this book. If you are a smoker wanting to quit, this book will reveal to you techniques that will allow you to relax and breathe properly - allowing you to quit smoking.

I really enjoyed the case studies. She has so much insight and experience as well as a real empathy for smokers. She explains some of the triggers that keep people smoking - some of them may surprise you!

I thoroughly enjoyed this book and recommend it to anyone who wants to stop smoking and feel healthier and better than they have in a long time.

This is the best book I've ever read on this subject. Not only is it super easy to read, but it flows in a logical step-by-step sequence that's simple enough for anyone to follow. I recommend this book to everyone, smoker and nonsmoker alike. If you have a relative or friend who smokes, buy it to help them break their addiction to nicotine. If you're a smoker, buy it for yourself and share it with your support system. This book is a life saver, and at the Amazon price it's a terrific bargain!

I have tried many times to quit smoking and never managed more than 1 day. I used this system and am now into my second week, smoke free. After more than 20 years as a smoker, I believe I have the support I needed to quit for good. If you follow the system as instructed and just relax then it will work!

I did as instructed and have not smoked for nearly a month, despite being surrounded by smokers at times. First time with hypnosis and was put off by how active I was mentally, trying to visualize just what the speaker was saying. After 4 - 5 days of the training session (done for the first 7 days to teach you to relax) I figured out not to worry with the visualization, just relax. Worked instantly! Instructions say "Allow yourself 20 - 25 minutes to relax or sleep (when you listen to the sessions). Work on the relaxation and the system will work on you.

This is an excellent CD using positive suggestions & expert technique.
I am a Certified Hypnotherapist and am in demand so much that I just cannot see all the people that need hypnotherapy. I have suggested this CD for persons looking to quit smoking and stay quit as Trevor uses many of the same techniques that I do. If you cannot get into a hypnotherapist for 1:1 sessions try this CD.

It is well worth the $$$$. As a former 20 plus yr smoker, hypnosis was the only treatment modality that finally took away ALL of the pain of quitting & living without cigs. Hypnosis helped me get "my life" & my freedom back.

Good luck in your journey to becoming a non-smoker! You can do it!

This book is a guide on how to deal with pain & struggle against the odds , I enjoyed thsi read tremendously , full of positive insight.

The only drawback is that Alex getting back with her husband Sam at the end after his crisis, although is selfishness & lack of support during her struggle with breast cancer.

A good job steele on this one !

Reading this story was very poignant for me. I am a cancer survivor who also lost her husband during the process. The difference between me and Alex is that I stayed with my Brock. I have to appalud Danielle for keeping married people together in this book, when she often separates them. This book will always be close to my heart. A very good read = real to life, not just some mushy, smushy romance.

Disappointing and discouraging!

I disliked this book so much that I'm returning it. It starts out telling you how you're going to become fat and depressed if you quit smoking and then the rest of the book just tells you to exercise. I've quit smoking before (once for 2 1/2 years) AND I have major depression and I will tell you I was always happier as an ex-smoker, even without regular exercise. It's true you may gain maybe 5-10 lbs. on the average and it IS always good to have an exercise routine, but I just found this book to be depressing and discouraging for someone who just quit or is thinking of quitting. There isn't a lot out there to support the ex-smoker, but I found _The Invisible Drug_
to be the most helpful so far. I gave this book 2 stars instead of 1 only because the authors had good intentions in writing the book and some people may find it useful since there aren't too many books like it.

This is definitely not a book for people who want to stop smoking, but for those who have. It is excellent with all its tips on how to butt out and not return to the nicotine habit. Much in the book -- especially the facts about the damage nicotine can do to one's health -- may permanently keep you from smoking again. This is well written with many exercises and other techniques to keep you from ever lighting up again.

Eat, Drink and Sleep with UK Vegetarians

My wife and purchased this book as a guide to our March, 2000 trip to England. Many of the listings are out of date due to the rapid changes in restaurant and accomodations businesses. (The book was published in 1995 so the information is about 6 years old.)

The listings in the book are almost exclusively vegetarian restaurants so if you have a hankering for something that had a face (as my son's vegan ex-girlfriend put it) you'd do better to call ahead and reserve a table "as far from the smoking area as possible"

Thankfully many Londoners and the folks we met on our tours of the countryside have cut back on smoking. There are places where you can expect to get a blast of the nasty (Underground exits, storefronts, and in milling crowds at rush hour). Some of the places really are disappointing (Vendors at the National Home and Garden Show smoked on the arena floor.) The book is silent on these important points.

Happily all of the larger hotels I contacted had nonsmoking accomodations. Their numbers can be secured from a website such as www.lastminute.com or other broker.

While our trips to the countryside were too few to give a realistic trial of the merits of the book it did seem the author's information might be more accurate once well outside London because things don't change as fast in these areas.

In sum, significant decreases in the practice of smoking in public and enclosed places have rendered this 1995 guide well out of date.
