For those of us who feel intimidated by the relentless pace of technological change, this book is a godsend. Not only does the author help make sense of how new technologies are altering the workplace, but she also provides practical advice on how to make the most of one's skills and interests in such an environment. Goldberg writes with clarity and grace. The tips at the end of each chapter offer excellent guidance for adapting to a high-tech world and inspire the reader to continue to think about these issues on his or her own. All in all, a valuable and accessible book that can help readers find their place in an increasingly complex world.

I found the book extremely useful. If there is anyone who has an aversion to technology, this is the book to read. As usual, Ms. Goldberg's style is fluid and cogent. It is an easy read and well done. Congratulations on a much needed book in today's hi-tech society.

A great tool for reluctant employees

Review Date: 1999-10-25
This is proving a great tool for getting reluctant employees to face the fact that they simply have to deal with computers. It provides enough information and tips about working in this new way, without ever getting technical, to get people relaxed enough to accept training with hope instead of terror.

Ideal resource for those intimidated by the Internet

This book is ideal for getting my reluctant older university students to try using the Internet for research. It answers many of the difficult questions about how to learn what information to trust on the web, and in general makes the whole idea of a wired world less threatening. In fact, if I decide to get my mother a computer, this book might prove the key to convincing her to actually use it. Nice, easy reading, and never condescending.

I was surprised that this book turned out being one of my sons favorites. He has loved this since he was about 11 months old. He especially likes the last page where he can pull down the flap of the baby's hand to see his reflection. I thought that this book was just way too repetative but it keeps the kids interest and it teaches them jungle animals. It is a very fun book.

I found Personal Safety Nets very helpful when I need to move in a hurry. I built one quickly using the advice I found in the book. But then I realized that it was a great process for meeting any need that can best be managed by a group. I assembled a group to help in a school project, and then using the same methods, found people to maintain what we did on an ongoing basis. This book is a gem in how to manage groups, delegate responsibilities, and avoid group member burnout, for any kind of an organization, whether it is to help in a personal crisis or gather to protect or improve a community. I am so glad I read it, and highly recommend that anyone read it, if for no other reason than to learn it is okay to ask for help when you need it. That it is, in fact, a gift of service that you are offering to your friends and neighbors. Everyone benefits.

Social safety nets obviously exist, such as Social Security and Medicare, but both these programs are under severe financial strain with an ever aging population. This book focuses on helping people make their own plans for the inevitable major transitions in their lives, so that they have a prearranged support team ready to go - and can work through the issues involved in getting and retaining that network of help. Be it a change in your health, your marriage, your lifestyle or a crisis for your family or friends, "Personal Safety Nets" gives you the luxury of learning from other people's experiences and provides both resources and inspiration to create a safety net tailored made for each individual.

Whether it's anxiety and fear from cancer, dementia, a sudden disability, or preparing for the final goodbye, Personal Safety Nets offers practical, honest tools for both caregivers and care recipients. For example, there are scripting and sample letters for people who might prefer death to asking anyone for help, a self test to distinguish between grief and depression, and dozens of illustrative real-life scenarios (including successes and failures.) Personal Safety Nets doesn't promote yet another speakers-circuit concept nor any religious or political point of view, which I find refreshing. As a man who had a full-time, demanding job and suddenly became a single father with two young boys, I wish I'd had this book 25 years ago! I am buying an extra copy to give or loan to a friend or loved-one when it's needed, and I'm keeping the original on my "keepers" bookshelf.

I was looking for an essential grammar book to improve myself. And amazingly, I came across this book in the library and decided to have a look at it. I'm truly amazed by how organised and logical their explanations are. In the end, I went to buy a copy of this book as a reference book for myself. Now, I will be getting another copy for my boyfriend as well. Truly recommended grammar book!

The book is small, but concise. It very helpfully covers the aspects of what people should have learned in Grammar School, but failed to pay attention when the teacher explained it. The general use of English in our country is pathetic. The rules are simple, but numerous; and this compact booklet certainly hits the high spots. It should be digested by anyone interest in self improvement.

Excellent, but watch for typos!

This seems to be an excellent book--clear, concise, and very easy to read. I should note, however, that I discovered three mistakes within the first fifteen minutes of reading it. There are three misspellings located on pages 169 and 170 of the third edition, dated 1997. This can be very confusing, especially when the author is attempting to draw a distinction between "counselor" and "counselor" (the second should be "councilor"), or when he states, "Even in respected newspapers, consensus is sometimes misspelled 'consensus' (sic)..."

These types of errors tend to undermine my confidence that I'm reading reliable information. Aside from this complaint, though, the books seems to be exceptional. A corrected edition would be a great resource for any writer.

Maybe the best basic grammar one can buy (for the price)!

This book is a combination of ESSENTIALS OF ENGLISH and some other English book. ESSENTIALS OF ENGLISH by Hopper, et al., is an excellent grammar, because it not only presents traditional grammar in a concise and straightforward manner but also gives points for differentiating between prepositions and subordinating conjunctions (for example) and other such distinctions. This grammar is especially good for rusty or beginning students primarily because of its simplicitly. It is nevertheless fairly comprehensive. Honestly, I could not recommend any grammar more highly for the average student of English. adveniat regnam Tuam...

Discover the perceptive minds of children in this book!

Review Date: 1998-12-08
I am intrigued by the intimacy of Ricki and the young minds in her ethnographic experience. Capturing these moments on video preserves the developmental sketches of their time. Often time, the points of view of children are ignored. However, Josh, an inciteful child, who queries the elements of his environment, brings both the mundane and obvious into an asynchronous focus that creates constructivist dialogue.

The author formulates a community in which you share the learning of two seperate and diverse schools. She invites you into the thinking of the children through digital media and takes you with her as you watch these children develop their understanding of the world around them. Watching this constructivist approach captures the inquiry of the reader and brings out the importance and significance of this type of learning in education.

This book takes a unique view of documenting a classroom setting through the use of video. I found the interplay between the descriptions in the book and the web site videos an enlightening experience. Ms. Goldman-Segall takes you into the Hennigan school (among other places) and lets you feel what is happening in this experimental educational setting. Her observations of the MIT project give a new and different perspective to the roles of the students and teachers in these settings. This is a book that takes full advantage of the tools of technology that we would like students to be using. This will give teachers a better understanding of their role in implementing technology and how it can make them more effective educators.

Goldman-Segall addresses relevant issues for educators.

Goldman-Segall addresses issues and concepts relevant to today's new generation of educators. The context for her research focuses on two very different schools in British Columbia and Massachusetts. Her role as a video ethnographer uncovers some of the social-historical and ethical issues both students and teachers must address in today's post-modern era. Goldman-Segall documents these issues through the use of video and the Internet. In doing so she offers a refreshing medium for discourse and understanding.

Terrific Way to Help Students and Teachers Grow

Review Date: 2008-06-01
This well written guide to self regulated strategy development (SRSD) provides the teacher a clear description of how to integrate a systematic, but not cook-book, writing strategy instructional block into the classroom.
I really like how the text is written to be digestible. Reading a five hundred page text is not what this book is about. It is about getting the information to teachers. Yes, the research is there, but it is plainly stated and well contextualized. There are a ton of lesson plans/ideas in the whole second part of the book. This is proving to be an excellent resource for the design of my class' writing strategy instruction. I highly recommend it for any K-12 teacher teaching writing.

I used this book as the basis for a Writers' Workshop for several of my students with written expression disabilities. The lesson are well written and easy to follow. The students really learned the strategies and used them in their written work. The blackline masters for handouts really saved a lot of time. The first part of the book deals with some meta-cognitive strategies for students. I did not use these as much.

Overall, great book and resource for teachers.

Really Powerful Strategies!

Review Date: 2008-04-19
This book provides an approach to writing instruction that has been unbelievably far more effective with my students than any other writing program that I have ever used - and I have been teaching writing for close to 20 years! It is easy to use, but includes all the most effective practices we all know that we should use but don't have a comprehensive plan for how to use in step by step way such as modeling, analyzing models with structured checklists, providing scaffolds but also how to fade them and ensure transfer of skills to other classes and settings. I could go on and on, but won't describe the approach as well as the book does. Parents and teachers have been amazed at the dramatic improvements their children have made with this approach.

Written by school psychologist Michelle Fattig, who herself lives a highly successful life even though she has ADHD and Asperger's Syndrome, A Prairie Day with Annie is novel for young readers featuring a pair of children, Michelle and John, who have Asperger's Syndrome and Attention Deficit Disorder. They apply their unique perspective and insight to combat crime and evil, and further world peace. Black-and-white illustrations and a large typeface gentle on the eyes distinguish this easy-to-read chapter book and its upbeat message life with ADD and Asperger's. A handful of black-and-white illustrations by Michelle's son Josh Fattig, who also has Asperger's Syndrome and ADD, round out this excellent novel for young readers ready to start on their first ever chapter books.

All of Michelle Fattig's books have given me a better insight into my son's experiences with ADD. I cried as I read the epilogue of "A Prairie Day with Annie" because it so accurately portrayed the emotions I felt as I watched my son after we put him on medication and switched schools. To finally have your child blossom in school and feel "smart" after years of struggling is truly a joyful experience for a parent. I strongly recommend this book, as well as Michelle's other "Annie" books.

A must read for teachers, family member's or children, who know or are struggling with Attention Deficit Disorder.
I am a mother of a child with high functioning Autism, Jordan faced alot of the same issues as Annie did in this book.
Also as I read this book (I have ADD) I found myself wishing that forty years ago when I was in school with similar problems, this book would have been available to everyone who interacted with me on a regular basis! It was quite a journey having this Attention Deficit back than nobody heard of this. The Table of Contents is written so that you can look up the weakness of the students (academic, behavioral, psychological, physical) you are concerned about, and then when you turn to that section, there are lots of appropriate and effective strategies for helping the student. Goldstein presents a structured, lesson-by-lesson curriculum designed for group therapy in schools. The lessons are cognitive-behavioral in orientation, and include educating the group members about the connections between thoughts, feelings, and behavior; self-monitoring and self-reinforcing; homework between sessions using structured worksheets; and social problem-solving training. Lessons take the form of didactic instruction, group discussions, and role-play. For those interested, he also provides ample references to lots of supporting research. I have used it successfully with groups of kids in grades 7-12. Good stuff for professionals working in schools and for training future professionals.

The theoretical and research background presented in this book is excellent. A clear and concise discussion of all of the relelvant research supporting Goldstein's various interventions is given. The book does all this while staying focused on the cognitive-social-skills training of youth which is its subject.
I wish I had found this book prior to doing my own research in aggression and anger management. It would certainly have made the lit. review a lot easier.
