When a person first starts through this workbook there is a temptation to think that it's mostly about Henry Brandt and his advice. However, careful and thoughtful study, coupled with the workbook questions and activities by Kerry Skinner, can bring about realization and permanent changes in the reader's life. I believe this book is carefully written and the stories and scripture can be used by the Spirit to expose area(s) of our life that require repentance and not just relief. I have personally found this book to be a very effective help when dealing with a difficult situation.

This book is great in cutting through all of the psychobabble, helping us get to "The Heart of the Problem", and discovering God's powerful life-changing solutions from the Bible. This book is not secular psychotherapy with a thin veneer of scripture, it is scripturally based from the beginning. I use it as a workbook for those I counsel with great success. I have never heard anything but praise for this book from anyone who has used it. It is worth far more than the current price!

Although I have no diagnosable learning disabilities, Ms Gold points out that we each learn in our own style, which can translate into stronger and weaker styles. Then she proceeds to inform on how to strengthen our weaker styles. This book is for everyone who is curious about the way we learn and for anyone who would like to strengthen their comprehension and learning speed. Great practical advice. Highly recommend. So interesting.

We recently found out our son has genius IQ, auditory processing problem and needs occupational therapy for his handwriting. Problem is, we live in Kuwait where there are no services in private schools. I ordered several books and this one has given me the most help to help him. We are working through it and he is reversing his b and d's less and learning organizational skills. So often it is assumed that kids know how to do all these things, but they need to be taught how. Thank you for putting together a sequential set of activities to help children. It is also written in an easy to understand way.

I have taught children with learning disabilities for many years and yet this book offers ways to reorganize my thinking about any student that struggles. It's not that I haven't thought about some of these things before, but this book reminds me to observe behaviors I sometimes overlook in the press of daily teaching chores. You know how special education teachers are always seeking ways "to change the brain". Well, it is apparent that it is also Ms. Gold's objective and she offers effective examples to get a teacher moving in the right direction to do this.

She Hits the Nail on the Head Time and Again

Review Date: 2007-02-20
The author, Lise Pyles, and I have known each other most of our lives. We were best friends in elementary school and lived just across the street from each other. Interestingly, we both had children diagnosed with Asperger Syndrome, which kind of makes me wonder about whether environmental factors might contribute to the rise of this condition, since we both drank the same water growing up.

Lise and I lost touch throughout much of our adult lives, but when we reconnected some years ago, she was a wonderful source of support to me while I was homeschooling my daughter. (My kid is the one in the book who loved mules, when all the other little girls were into horses.) Every time I would email Lise, wondering whether I was doing the right thing or if I was on the right track, Lise would write back with positive observations that I had not been able to make myself. That's because I was in the thick of it--the everyday challenges of homeschooling made it hard for me to step back and make observations about the overall progress that was happening.

What I loved about Lise's book when it was later published is that it was just like the actual conversations we'd had, by email and in person, about homeschooling an Aspy. She is a practical, down-to-earth person who can wisely see how Asperger kids are able to flourish when they're taught at home, without the distractions, transitions, and other challenges that occur at school.

I'm happy to report that after about five years of homeschooling, my daughter was able to handle the social challenges of attending a private alternative school. The years when we home schooled prepared her for going out into the larger world. In her school, where they practice democratic decision-making and where students initiate their own learning experiences, my daughter has continued to grow socially. As with many Asperger kids, we never had to worry about my daughter's academic abilities, but we did wonder if she would be able to stand being in a room full of other people, and now she can do that and fully participate in school meetings. She has important jobs at school and at home, and we don't really worry about whether she'll be able to function as a working adult in a few years.

Lise's earlier book, "Hitchhiking Through Asperger Syndrome," also helped prepare me for the possibility that some years it may be better to home school my daughter and other times it may be better for her to be in a school setting. That's what I like about Lise's practical approach and advice. She advocates that you stay in tune with your child's needs and continue to evaluate how to get those needs met. I think this is a realistic approach, because there is no one-size-fits-all solution for how to educate your child.

I work with a child who has Aspergers and found this book to be invaluable. Lisa Pyles has put together a very informative collection of information, tips, and strategies that will likely be helpful to anyone who is working or living with an Aspergers child. Strategies involving utilizing and capitalizing on the child's particular area of interests were particularly helpful to me. I look forward to future texts by this author as I plow through the joys and challenges of knowing my Aspergers student, I can use all the help I can get!

Absolutely fantastic

It is hard to believe Lise Pyles packed so much into such a thin little book. She expertly balances the personalized POV of a mother who homeschooled her Asperger-affected son for several years with the POV of a self-taught expert on raising kids with Asperger's. The book itself has a very conversational and personal style, sympathetic to the parent's concerns without ever being patronizing.

The book is not comprehensive about any one particular topic, but gives practical and diverse starting-off points for many issues facing AS-affected homeschooling families, including tackling the mindset of teaching the "whole child" instead of just academics, how to choreograph tailored social opportunities for all ages and gauge their successes, childhoood depression vs. AS kids' real need for decompression and heaps of alone-time, how to keep a proper perspective and avoid burnout, how to model social skills in everyday situations, the concept of "learning styles" through the lens of Asperger's and how AS kids employ them in slightly different ways, lists of practical life-skills and social skills at various age and developmental levels, special issues to consider when homeschooling an AS child, lists of web sites that help with teaching face recognition/ idiom use/ communication/ "sensory diets," brief curriculum reviews, and many other subjects.

Again, it is amazing that so much information was successfully packed into such a slim volume. The author achieves this by employing the frequent use of well-organized and well-conceived bullet point lists, and the nearly dozen appendixes are a wealth of AS-specific information not just for American homeschoolers but for families in Australia, the UK and Canada as well.

Aside from the concise and robustly practical nature of the information in this book, what I found most helpful is the positive and upbeat point of view of Pyles herself. In every chapter, she includes real-life success stories, including her own as well as that of 40 other AS-affected homeschooling families. But the real boon of these is that she gradually redefines what "success" really means - not the best grades or the most awards or anything like that, but that even things that look like "failures" on the outset can be viewed as successes with just a slight attitude shift. For example: A trip to the museum that ends in a meltdown after an hour. The meltdown might be perceived as a failure at first, but the fact that a sensory-sensitive child survived an hour at a noisy, confusing museum is a success. Nuggets like this are peppered throughout the book. I suppose she is "modeling" what it looks like to turn lemons into lemonade. =)

This book has changed my entire perspective on raising and educating an Asperger-affected child entirely at home, 100% for the better and with great heaps of optimism. I am now going to order her other books, and hope that she knows how much her work has helped people.

I am reading my way through this book. It's been great to receive confirmation that a lot of the things that I'm doing are right on. There aren't too many people I can talk to about Asperger's Syndrome. This book gives me ideas and resources that are quite helpful. Another home school mom actually referred me to this book. Asperger's Syndrome is a fairly new diagnosis, so I expect that more will be known and written about it in the next 10 years.

In a culture where global warming and being green are becoming household names, A Hot Planet Needs Cool Kids helps to deshroud some of the mystery of these terms-- and in language that we can ALL understand without having a science degree.

If you are a parent- buy this book. If you are an educator- buy this book. If you are a kid- get your parent's permission- and then buy this book. Definitely if you are a politician... please BUY THIS BOOK.
The pictures are terrific, and it's chock full of great activities to expand upon the text. A Hot Planet Needs Cool Kids is a great resource for the classroom, or the family library.

Written by two authors who practice what they preach in green living, this book will empower you to make green choices in your life, but also to know WHY they matter. A Hot Planet Needs Cool Kids isn't scary and full of doomsday-- it's a book full of common language explanations and sends a message of hope for our planet, written for our future--our kids.

This seems to be a fine and timely book. I confess I did not read it in its entirety, I only browsed the random selections offered online. However, I was greatly disturbed by the assertion in the very first selection offered that carbon monoxide is the ugly black smoke that comes from...whatever. It contrasts carbon monoxide with carbon dioxide, which is invisible, has no odor, etc. WRONG WRONG WRONG! Carbon monoxide is every bit as invisible and odorless as carbon dioxide! This is a very concerning error, and I hope there are no more of them to weaken the book.

Belongs in Every Middle School Classroom!

This is an important and accessible book that clearly defines climate change and explores the many ways it is adversely affecting our world. It provides interesting examples of things people are already doing to fight climate change. Even better, it suggests positive action items that will inspire and teach children and their families how to become part of the solution. A valuable resource and idea book that belongs in every library, as well as every 6th, 7th and 8th grade science and social studies classroom!

How The Brain Learns, is an exceptional resource for understanding the most effective ways to grasp information. This should be required reading for anyone in the educational field. It's helped to remove the barrier that stands in the way of average teachers becoming great and trouble students being seen as gifted. As the founder of www.Fighting4Youth.com, I've addressed these types of issues several times among students and teachers. However, it wasn't until I received this eye opening information from Dr. Sousa, that allowed me to truly be effectively in my quest to meeting these needs.

This book would not even be needed if California (also known as...Kalifornia, and PDRK...The Free Peoples Democratic Republic of Kalifornia.) did not have such a hard time with the phrase "SHALL NOT BE INFRINGED." I just could never understand the concept of "gun control." Since law-abiding citizens police themselves, and criminals ignore the law, why bother? John Lotts book "More Guns, Less Crime", is a very good read. And it shows the disinginous argument of gun control. Which boils down to people control, not crime control.

Gun laws are such a mess, even the most conscientious citizen will have trouble figuring out what is legal and what isn't. In addition, the subject is so culturally polarized, it is impossible for those with a strong opinion on the subject to give a clear answer to common questions. Enter this great book. Too bad it's not available for the other 49 states...

Until I read this book I just couldn't understand how to relate to my young son. Though I can't say that I agree with everything in this book, it was a huge help in learning how my son was figuring out his world. He learns through his eyes! My older son and I learn through our ears. I thought everyone did until I read this book. It is just as valid to learn through your eyes or your fingers or your movements as it is through your ears. Every parent and teacher should read this book.

After 8 years of trying to understand my daughter, I found her in this book. I knew she thought differently, but all the professionals were stumped as to how to help her. I finally found this book and it was as if I saw my daughter for the first time. Not only did it identify her learning style perfectly, I was able to see how that learning style formed her personality and how she reacted, positively and negatively, to different situations. As a parent, that understanding has allowed me to be more proactive with her education and more patient in my parenting. I recommend this book to anyone, especially those parents or caregiving professionals who know there's more to their child than what is being seen.

I picked up this book from an LLL meeting's private library, just for something to read for the month. I never imagined that it was going to change the way I looked at my child! In learning my child's thought pattern (and mine and my husband's as well) I not only discovered how he learns, but reasons for the ways he behaves. When reading the description of a typical person with my child's thought pattern, it was as though the author was describing my child exactly! I now understand such behaviors in my child as never having an appetite, not enjoying coloring, although he can very nicely, being able to memorize things he hears with seemingly no effort at all, talking and asking questions from the moment he wakes up untill he is asleep, and being timid about defending himself physically even when necessary. This book also enlightened me to the fact that my thought pattern and my son's will fit perfectly while I endevor to school him at home, as I enjoy talking and enlightening people, and he learns easiest through hearing. Never before has a book influenced my life in such strong and beneficial way. I have recommended this book to every parent I know, and strongly to those that have chosen as I have to educate their children at home. It is true that every child is smart in their own way and it is important to understand this in order to help each child learn to lead a productive life.

I use this book fairly regularly to teach verbs and other vocabulary in my private Spanish classes. The phrases are simple, the pictures are nice and bright, and the students (ages 3-5) are able to "read" this in Spanish after only one viewing of the book! The phrases used go along well with my 4 year old's curriculum, Flip Flop Spanish: Ages 3-5: Level 1, and he often pulls this book out after his lesson (on his own.)

I also use this in my class for 4-7 year olds and 7-12 year olds for our five minute book reports in Spanish. They like it because it has both English and Spanish - though they can only give reports in Spanish, it assures them that they are saying what they mean to say!

Overall - A great buy with long life throughout early Spanish education!

what has been discussed in each chapter. That is very handy for the readers. My suggestion for those who don't know what gift to get their loved ones is to buy this book. Parents will not regret
buying and reading this book.

Dr. Rambo's I Know My Child Can Do Better is a marvelous book for young parents wanting to help their children in school ---- caring, concrete, humorous, and totally free of jargon and diagnostic labels.
We bought three copies to pass on, and, after seeing the book and reading the enticing table of contents, so did six of our friends who wanted to lend a helping hand to their school-age grandchildren.

informative and very readable

Anne Rambo writes from the best possible perspective. Both mother and expert she gives clear information, and lots of it, in a readable and empathetic way. Her book is a pleasure to read. Ms Rambo gives detail and further contacts and lets us know our rights and responsibilities. She shows how other parents go through the things we do. She gives hope and practical ways to get through difficult times. Did you know you can request assessment for your child at any time and your school must respond? Did you hear of Wardolf schools? Anne Rambo gives all sorts of interesting information and has you feeling she's your own concerned expert.
