traditional recipes at their straightforward basic bestReview Date: 2007-12-21
Here are 250 recipes; American or 'traditional ethnic' -- not too far off the beaten path; things like moussaka, goulash, chile con carne, coq au vin, Boston baked beans, beef stew with dumplings, fried chicken, corned beef & cabbage. No frills, no hard-to-find ingredients, no nonsense about what county in Hungary you should buy your paprika from.
I've tried about 20 recipes from this book -- all have been successful & most added to the rotation/repertoire; usually I'm pleased/surprised to find more than a couple of recipes per cookbook that I like & here I've found ten times that & haven't tried all that I want to yet.
This is, without hesitation, the best 'everyday' cookbook I've ever used. (for fancier/not 'everyday' recipes I generally like Jacques Pepin & Jacques/Julia -- that's for a baseline...)

It is only with the heart that one can see rightlyReview Date: 2007-11-21
It is this other story in the background what intrigued me. The story about choices and selection. It brought to my mind the well-known tale from Antoine de Saint-Exupéry The Little Prince - which describes friendship and love. It is only with the heart that one can see rightly; what is essential is invisible to the eye."

Interesting book with pretty fairy tales in itReview Date: 2003-05-16
My favourite story in the book is „The Selfish Giant". Because first the Giant is very selfish and doesn't want the children to play in his garden but afterwards he sees the happiness of the children when they play in his garden and this gives him happiness too. Also the relationship between the little boy and the Giant is great.
Nine lovely, tragic talesReview Date: 2002-01-12
"The Happy Prince" and "The Selfish Giant" are perhaps the most famous of the nine. In the first story, the golden statue of a prince weeps for all the suffering people he sees and begs a swallow to strip him of his riches and distribute them to the masses. In the second tale, a giant builds a wall around his beautiful garden to keep out the noisy children, only to find out that he has also locked out the Spring.
"The Young King" is a variation on the theme of "A Happy Prince". When a young monarch learns of the suffering and misery caused by his requirement for a robe, a crown, and a sceptre, he refuses to handle any of these riches and is given a more fitting raiment by a Divine Power. Keeping with the royal theme is "The Star-Child", about a beautiful but horrible young boy whose physical appearance grows to match his ugly spirit. Another little bird appears in "The Nightingale and the Rose", to help a young man win the heart of the woman he loves.
The stories' themes include beauty, tragedy, agony, compassion, innocence, and (Platonic) love. Some characters give their lives, or sell their souls, in the name of love. There are also the same archetypes that appear in dreams: the Divine Child, the Trickster, the Wise Old Man or Woman, the Number 3, and more. Add all this to Wilde's delicate writing and gilded imagination, and you get some of the most original tales ever written.
Though most of these stories end happily, all end tragically. That is to say, even when the endings are happy, someone always dies. Each story manages to associate everything thrilling and exquisite about beauty with the starkness of death. Accordingly, not all of these tales are suitable for children. For example, one scene in "The Fisherman and His Soul" features witches dancing before the devil and the princess in "The Birthday of the Infanta" is a heartless child whose mockery leads to the death of a little dwarf. Though the stories are moral at the core, and often explicitly Christian, they do not always make sense.
Despite the faults, the keening, poignant loveliness shines through, making me want to read each story again and again and again.

great book....Review Date: 2006-11-03
Excellent reading for every parent, teacher, college student.Review Date: 1999-03-07
The seminal book for today's education reform.Review Date: 1999-04-30
Many of the problems in education seem to stem from alienation of individuals in the classrooms of America. Children are forced to feel apart from the class rather than being an integral part of the class and their own individual creative learning experience. The Naropa Conference was clear and honest in the formation of the new class curriculum. Respect for each and every student. Love as the main ingredient of the daily interactions.
If just that one (as in every one) teacher, bought the book...could undedrstand the message, and would apply it to his or her life, alienation and pressure to perform would be relics of an antiquated system destined to doom and failure. Children would begin to become the bright radiant suns of learning and personal growth rather than the reflecting moons of past educational process.
Highly recommend. A must for every person involved with children, from preschool through 100.

For years I have owned and used a hardcover copy of this book, copywright of 1988 and published by Barron's. I'm guessing I've had the book for about 18 years since it was one of the first 10 cookbooks I owned after college. None of my older cookbooks are in the poor condition this book is in. The binding is just separating at the seams at certain places in the book. Others are glued too high up the page and are causing the pages to tear at the binding when the book is laid flat.
Otherwise, the book is in beautiful condition! The color pictures look fabulous, the color and quality of the paper has held up beautifullly. The book wouldn't look 5 years old if only the pages were staying bound as they certainly still should be.
So, I write this review as I'm trying to locate another copy because having a book that is falling apart takes away much of the pleasure of reading the book.
The picture of the book above is different than my book, which is mostly red with a close-up photograph of vegetables, so I am hopeful that the newer edition will be better bound.
Otherwise, I highly recommend this cookbook.
