A True Story

When I found Flash! Bang! Pop! Fizz! I was finally impressed with a children's book of science experiments. My judgment was validated when a friend told me the following story that showed its magic.

Clients of hers recently moved into a new home. Their oldest boy was to do a science fair project in school and the family, still partially unpacked, could not put their hands on any books or materials that might prove helpful. A trip to the library left the young student totally bored and disinterested.

My friend offered her own copy of Flash! Bang! Pop! Fizz! to the distraught mother. The mother called the next day, incredulous and excited. Her son loved the books and picked out a project. The situation turned from grim to enthusiastic.

The boy is the oldest of three children and the ecstatic mother said she was going to go out and buy three copies of the book since they would be needing them for the next seven years of science!

I recommend the book to all!

Kids Science Takes a Step Further

To keep it brief: Flash, Bang, Pop, Fiz! is a genuine improvement over virtually ever other science book directed at kids under, say, age 16. This is because it focuses on the scientific process and the discipline of science rather than just "activities." While the experiments are certainly entertaining and worthwhile in their own right, they actually earn the name "experiment." This book is ideal for any parent or teacher who hopes to interest their kids in doing "serious" science down the line. It also happens to be a ton of fun.

Where was this book when I was a kid?

If Janet Chahrour's, "Flash! Bang! Pop! Fizz!" had been around when I was a kid in school, I'm sure my chemistry and physics grades would have been much higher. Who knows? I may have been the next Einstein!

This is a wonderful book for students to learn how to appreciate the physical sciences and have a whole lot of fun while doing so. Chahrour drew from her many years experience as a science teacher to compile 25 different activities and experiments that children can perform using everyday household items.

With amusing titles such as "Whirligig Rocketry," "Pop Can Pedestal," "Portable Alarm," "Fabulous Play Goop," and "Your Dear Friend, Egbert," children learn the basics about air pressure, density, chemical reactions, liquids, gases, gravity, motion and many other scientific concepts. In addition to clear, step-by-step instructions for each experiment, the book provides vocabulary lists and easy to understand explanations of the scientific principle under study.

The book is an easy to read large format paperback, profusely illustrated in color, and contains guidelines for parents and teachers.

Even though, I've been out of school much longer than I care to admit, I found Chahrour's book to be fascinating and fun. Although written for children from grades 5 to 9, it definitely appeals to children of all ages.

Cicely Mary Barker fairies are so innocent and sweet. My girls (ages 7 and 5) love them and this book allows them to create their own fairy worlds with the beautiful stickers. The pages are all very pretty and are interspersed with little written activities and outdoor fairy projects. The only negative I have is that the stickers are supposed to be scented. Some of the stickers have a smell, but it is not entirely pleasant. Overall though, it is worth the money.

This is a fantastic book for children! My six-year old was particularly excited to see actual images of Mars as part of the illustrated story. This book will appeal to children of all ages because the story is easy to follow and the fun facts add just the right amount of information for those who are interested in knowing more details about the red planet. This is a must for elementary school libraries!

It isn't often you find a children's book on space that is both scientifically accurate and fun to read. This book manages that balance well, without (thank goodness) talking down to my little ones. The illustrations are great fun, the wording is simple, clear and interesting, and the book is the right length for kids from 3-6 (I might even stretch that out to 7 or 8). Love it.

This whimsically illustrated book is great to help foster kids interest in space exploration. The story chronicles a child's trip to Mars and includes sight seeing highlights and spacecraft images from the Red Planet. A great book for fostering discussion of how working and living on Mars would be different than on Earth. This book seems ideally targeted to children between 4 and 8.

One of the must-haves for your kitchen!

When I first started toying with the idea of going to culinary school many years ago, a chef I spoke with recommend 2 books to get my feet wet with culinary terms, knowledge and technique. The first was Larousse "Gastronomique" and "The Food Lover's Companion". So, I immediately went out and purchased both and still have them to this day. I also recommend them to others just starting out, as well as to food enthusiasts, because they make great reference materials.

Both "Gastronomique" and "Food Lover's" serve similar purpose with different levels of detail. The excellent thing about "The Food Lover's Companion" is that it is much, much more portable than "Gastronomique" and gives you just the right amount of information needed.

I have been in the food industry for years now, and still will flip through it and get wrapped up in finding various things I didn't know or had forgotten. It's one of those books you can take to a doctor's appt, or an oil change and while you are waiting and flip it and learn a few things!

This review book is formated in such a way that I can actually help my child with homework. I go directly to the section she's learning, and can quickly review the section that's current to her learning needs. She and I can do the reviews together and this wouldn't be possible without this book. I especaily like that I don't have to refer to hundreds of pages before being able to help my child.

Statistics: More Interesting The Second Time Around

Review Date: 2000-08-02
This is an excellent refresher for Statistics, laid out logically and with ideas clearly illustrated graphically. Published by Barron's, these "Forgotten" books are nicely oriented toward the professional who needs to brush up on a subject in order to make competent decisions and communicate intelligently.

"Statistics and Probability" is one of those amazing sciences that we take for granted from childhood, but the more we think about it (as we get older, regrettably), it begins to dawn on us that this is the catalyst of many mysterious processes, such as the forces of life overcoming entropy. Science has rather recently discovered that there is really no such thing as "randomness", with the advent of Chaos Theory bringing down the walls of the last bastion of that idea. Statistics and Probability then become the focus of means by which some form of Higher Intelligence manages to do its business under our noses without us having a clue as to its presence!

Excellent stats primer

This is an outstanding book for any professional that finds himself immersed if not overwhelmed by an increasingly quantitative world. This book provides you an excellent foundation in basic statistics that can readily allow you to build upon by studying more advanced stats if you care to. Thus, this book is a good stepping stone for Intuitive Biostatistics if you want to easily deepen your knowledge of statistics and care to understand better medical studies.

The book is subdivided in two parts. The first part teaches you the basics. The second part is a good reference section often covering some more advanced material.

I also recommend the other two books in this "Forgotten" series if you care to refresh other math areas: Forgotten Algebra and Forgotten Calculus.

Excellent Supplemental Text to a variety of stats courses!

Like most students,I was not looking forward to my Introductory Statistics course. However, knowing that I had to do it I made certain to purchase several supplemental texts to aid in clarification when the textbook failed to do so. Although the title says 'Forgotten Statistics' it does serve as an aid to those who are entirely new to the subject as it presents the concepts in a logical fashion( the book is divided in two sections one for concepts and problems the other with definitions). This book has remained in my backpack the entire semester. So much, in fact, that I find myself going over problems during my liesure time. This book has served me rather well. It has not required lots of additional time in learning and problem solving. My GPA and I are happy about that.

Krovetz haas written a book that will help those involved in thinking about how to make our schools work for all children. The idea is that if we create a nurturing yet academically challenging culture, we can provide a climate in which all chiildren can flourish. Through the case studies we see how each school has encated the ideas, bringing them to life, and showing us the possibilities as well as the difficulties.

Martin Krovetz published "Fostering Resiliency" with subtitle "Expecting All Students to Use Their Minds and Hearts Well." As a retired administrator and teacher I see his book striking at the heart of what all educators should be doing. This San Jose State U. professor gives narrative with examples of students and happening schools, and he integrates first lists and step-by-step procedures for winning over students of all ages so that they can be taught. The book has incredible import for balancing vital aspects of our children's education. No aspect, e.g. curriculum, assessment, nurturing, can be isolated in schools for students nor all other adults in students' lives. Mr. Krovetz builds the case for fostering resiliency in everyone. It could be the next handbook for restoring a full education to students, including the "basics" which is on everyone's wish list these days. It is a book to be studied. Is it on the shelves at Amazon?

I have found D. L. Fountain's book to be "Right On The Point" in the identification of the problems encountered during the discipline of students. The particular identification of behavior "Patterns" and "Performance" shared in D. L. Fountain's text represents the proliferation in the evolution of discipline in today's schools!
This book will be extremely useful with helping educators understand just how "huge" the role that adult behavior plays in the outcomes of STUDENT discipline.

This book is full of positive alternatives that teachers and administrators can embrace in their attempts to deal with school discipline. A strength of this book is the emphasis upon strong neighboring communities providing a basis for pro-social youth behavior. The author of this book states that we must welcome our young people and teach them real-world coping skills. I say 'Yes, finally something teachers and schools can use!'

The story was mainly told in the forest. The main characters in the story was Franklin. The minor characters were bear, rabbit, fox beaver skunk. The theme was that this book would be that school is alot of fun and don't be afraid to go there. School is a good learning experience. The style would be that the author has a picture on every page and it has friends playing and having fun on every page.

Our 5 yr old loves the entire series. She reads them aloud.
