Fantastic. These books are the best I have found to find pictures to use as templets or stencils for designs to paint on silk.

There are wonderful illustrations of reef fish and corals in this nicely illustrated book. Adults can color it with colored pencils to de-stress, and kids can benefit from learning all about the creatures of the coral reef. This also is a very good reference for the graphic artist as well.

Accurate, fun pictures.

This is a book which is accurate in its drawings, with the official names for many, if not all, the different species. I am an adult, a frustrated artist with no talent whatsoever for drawing. I have really enjoyed coloring these pictures with colored pencils. There is a lot of small detail work in some of the pictures, which I think would be difficult with crayons, but of course, all the detail doesn't need to be observed. I have loved this book and have colored 2/3 of the pictures. It is my favorite of the half dozen coloring books I bought. There are completed colored pictures of about a quarter of the drawings, which I appreciate very much, as it gives inspiration to those of us who would like to experiment with shading, etc.

Adults and kids who enjoy art and/or nature will find the books in this series enjoyable. You can simply enjoy putting colors together to create your own world of creatures or flowers (depending upon which book you order) or you can do the research and create a realistic world of color and beauty complete with learning the different names for the fish and under water foliage or the flowers or the butterflies etc in other books. Whether used as a learning tool or just for creative expression adults and children alike enjoy these books. I keep a selection of these types of coloring books around around the house with a very large selection of gel pens and markers for my neices and nephews and they come over frequently to visit while we all sit down to color, nothing else, Though I wouldn't sit to color a regular coloring book, these and the geometric or mandrel design coloring books are more on an adult level and I enjoy sitting with them as we chat about what is happening in their lives as we color. I believe they open up more because the coloring alows them to avoid the intensity of one-on-one coversations about emotional things in their lives. Open a door, sit and color with your pre-teen or teen and just be available to talk. You may be surprised at what doors you are opening, beyond the creativity of a child and yourself.

Graduate Student Recommends Courageous Conversations

Singleton and Linton impart guided wisdom for the courageous captains who navigate the waters of racism in the sea of school reform. They aid school leaders in the quest for achieving the goals of narrowing the racial divide of achievement, heightening racial consciousness, and ensuring equity. School leaders will find this to be an indispensable handbook for discussing race, dealing with racial issues, and establishing a common language in a professional and productive atmosphere.
The authors' diverse backgrounds provide the reader and practitioner with six conditions that form the basis for antiracist leadership: getting personal; keeping the focus on race; engaging multiple racial perspectives; fostering interracial dialogue in a safe environment; establishing a common language around race; and discussing aspects of whiteness.
Singleton and Linton provide samples of racial histories and provide school leaders with the tools to realize their visions of equity and closing the achievement gap.
Self-examination, personalized racial histories, and the intentional acts of persistence, practice, and passion will lead school leaders on a journey towards engaging in Courageous Conversations About Race. This has been the "pink elephant" that many avoid acknowledging in numerous staff lounges, school board meetings, and classrooms for so long. The authors guide us towards opening our collective eyes, touching, and unpacking the "pink elephant.

Singleton has managed to present an incendiary topic in such a way that is palatable and astounding. "Courageous Conversations" creates a great outlet for discussion, and provides great opportunities for educators to actually be the student. It was a pleasure to read.

This is truly a courageous book! Richard Hernstein first broke Political Correctness's stranglehold on the discussion of race and educational achievement with his book The Bell Curve, and though that groundbreaking book was meticulously researched, the author suffered a hail of mindless political-inspired assaults. Now, the authors of this book have built on Hernstein's work, calling for meaningful dialogue on what changes need to be made to the American educational establishment to provide meaningful results for non-whites.

If you care about the future of America, then read The Bell Curve and Courageous Conversations about Race!

WOW! I was fortunate to work with Glenn Singleton as he brought "Courageous Conversations" to my school district. His method of getting all of us to reflect on what we bring to the table is invaluable. When we are able to look at what race means to us and learn to 'listen" to other peoples stories we are able to grow. Get this book, it's life changing and life affirming.

This is the only book on constructivism that I have ever seen that is designed for teachers as opposed to academics. While it is clearly scholarly, it is highly practical and contains a wealth of useful, creative, and exciting ideas for teachers to put into practice tomorrow in their own classrooms. Their is a glowing endorsement on the back cover from Alfie Kohn, one with which I wholly agree, who notes that the book presents highly effective and engaging strategies to help students find meaning in their educational experience. The book is filled with self-assessment checklists, strategies for helping parents and administrators understand what constructivist teaching is about, and useful questions at the end of each chapter for helping teachers design their next steps. There are wonderful chapters on technology, dealing with issues surrounding classroom diversity, and helping students make the transition from chalk and talk, drill and kill classrooms to the kinds of learning experiences which will truly be lifelong and meaningful.

Well described case studies that support construtivist principles...the checklists are helpful...focuses on the humanities (language development, reading and social studies) rather than math and science...extensive references...recommended for entry level professional development as well as college courses in constructivism.

I have spent a lot of time looking for a book that I can actually use in my classroom. This is it. It contains checklists that helped me immensely in my attempt to make my classroom more democratic and more focused on active learning. With state standards being implemented in most states, this book is a must read. It clearly shows how constructivism is the foundation for the standards in all of the disciplines.

These TyBooks are so great! I have the whole set and they are the best thing I had for my baby for her first year, period. They have consistently been one of her favorite things and she is now 16 months and still loves them. They feel like paper, so she always loved to play with them (you know how much babies love paper), but they are waterproof, tearproof, and totally indestructible. She can chew on them, suck on them, tug at and wrinkle the pages all her little heart desires, and can't damage the book at all. I love it, because her other books are all either in danger or a danger to her if I leave her with them unattended. Plus, they grow with her because there's something to be interested in for every stage of babyhood (looking at shapes, then playing with paper, then turning pages, then making animal sounds, then identifying things, etc) She really learned to handle and use books on these TyBooks, and now she loves all books and is an avid reader (for a 1 year old :).

My fiance and I are considering getting a dachshund. Before committing ourselves financially, we wanted to know what we were getting ourselves into. We purchased this book along with Dachshunds for Dummies and I feel like both of these books gave us a great window into the lives of Doxie owners. Neither of these books are written generically so that the publisher can just insert the next breed name into the title and publish it. The information was very dachshund specific. This book is full of great info from personality quirks to grooming tips to how to show your doxie to what to look for in a vet. After reading this book, my fiance and I decided that now was not the best time to bring a dachshund into our home. We'll wait until the conditions will be ideal for both us AND the dog!! BUY THIS BOOK if you want to know about dachshunds!!!!!!

The Daily Summer Activities books are fantastic! They are layed out so nice. There is a page each for Monday - Friday with a little bit of everything for each day (a little math, spelling, reading, thinking skills, ...). Just the right amount so kids don't forget what they've learned over the summer, but not too much - so its hard to complain about.

A little girl is convinced that a terrifying dangerous bear lives under the stairs in her home. Her parents deal with her fear in a very creative way: they suggest that she write a letter to the bear asking him to go away. What develops is a friendship written back and forth through letters from the "bear" to the girl and vice versa. My favorite page is the last page! The bear writes the girl a last letter and invites her to tea under the stairs. The little girl is nervous, but gets all dressed up and goes. She walks into the little cubby underneath the stairwell and discovers a really cute teddy bear set up by a tea set and another note asking to come live with her (he's tired of living under the stairs). So very cute and a very creative way of helping a child conquer her fears.

Found this book to be very informative on the importance of a Christian Worldview. Tom Neven does an excellent job presenting his arguments in a very readable manner. I thought I had a healthy worldview when it came to separating fact from fiction and truth from trends. But after reading Tom Neven's book, I found that I was---dare I say it? I was WRONG! In his journalistic way, the author took a fairly common subject (Christian worldviews)and analytically broke down misplaced arguments that we make to ourselves. But his style isn't so heady that a teen has trouble with the material. In fact, my fourteen year old daughter promptly conviscated the book and is using it in her teen accountability group. I would recommend this book as one that parents and teens could read together. But be prepared to have a few old myths shattered.

Excellent resource - middle and upper school aged students!

Review Date: 2006-06-12
Neven is the senior editor for Plugged In magazine and the former editor of Focus on the Family magazine, so as he writes primarily to a teen or young adult audience, he is very familiar with them and their mind set. The book is a wonderful and easy-to-read examination of the concept of a Christian worldview and exactly how that affects a person's daily interaction with a postmodern and relativistic culture. Neven starts by laying down a few basic rules, as he calls them:
Rule No. 1: God is.
Rule No. 2: God is the God of truth. All truth is God's truth.
Rule No. 3: Because we are created in God's image, we have the ability to recognize truth, although that ability is tainted by sin.
Rule No. 4: The ability of a person to recognize truth diminishes the closer that truth is to his or her own heart, to the very nature of being a person.

Neven then does an excellent job of giving a history of some of influential thinkers and their contribution to cultural transformation over the years. After that he turns from principles to practical and begins to examine modern culture exploring how a Christian worldview interacts with and runs counter to much of modern thinking in areas such as public policy/government, family, art, music, literature, science and history. Neven concludes by reminding the reader that all worldviews are religious in nature and that the reader must not back down when engaging the culture because of attack or perceived prejudice or bias.

Do Fish Know They're Wet is a pretty good read, especially for someone new to the worldview concept. Neven is an excellent writer and communicator and gives the reader just enough without complicating the issues beyond his intended audience's appetite.

I just finished reading "Do Fish Know They're Wet" and I was impressed not only by the information presented, but also with the readable explanation of some pretty difficult subjects. I am sending my copy to my younger sister so she can read it before she heads off to college, because I think that it will give her a clear picture of different worldviews, many of which she will encounter in college, and how they relate to truth. There were several topics in the book, including logical fallacies, which had never before been explained to me in such a clear, understandable way. After finishing the book, I feel equipped to give a reasonable, logical answer to the challenges I face on nearly a daily basis on my college campus. Neven's book is an invaluable resource for teens and adults alike, particularly in a world where we are constantly combatting worldviews and ideals which are in direct opposition to Christianity.

In "Do Fish Know They're Wet?" author Tom Neven explains the importance of your worldview and how it shapes your opinions and decisions. He shows the difference between worldviews like nihilism, existentialism, and postmodernism, and how they compare to a Biblical worldview. He also gives lots of practical examples of the way your worldview affects how you see everything from education, philosophy, government, art, music and pop culture. Very interesting read. Check it out.
