George and Martha is as humorous as Pooh Bear getting stuck in a tree! First, Martha makes split pea soup for George, but George hates split pea soup, so he pours it in his shoes. Second, Martha catches him doing this. She tells him that she doesn't like split pea soup either. She just makes it because she thought George likes it! Third, Martha makes cookies, so everyone is happy! George and Martha is one of my favorite books... and I'm in sixth grade!

God Save George and Martha!

These are great tales of friendship--even for beginners, like my 4 yr old preschool class. They love all the little stories. A few go over their heads, but they get the concept of the humor and companionship represented by these sweet, lovable, sometimes mischevious and selfish hippos. I've tried reading them the other George and Martha books, but this is their favorite. Gosh, thank God for James Marshall and his inventions!
(We have an old copy---the kids love the "pink cookies" Martha offers George instead of pea soup!)
Sampling:
George doesnt want to eat Marthas pea soup, so he pours it in his shoes
George knocks out his favorite tooth. Which is your favorite tooth?
George gets tired of Martha looking at herself in the mirror all the time; she even wakes up in the middle of the nite to do it. So he pastes a silly picture of her on her mirror....
There are George and Martha stuffed animals out there, too.
Any relation to George and Martha Washington?

This book and an all-time favorite of mine and my kids love it as well. It contains simple, sweet stories of two best friends. Each story has a message and the illustrations are adorable! I had no idea this book was still in print, and it is a great one!

This is a terrific book for anybody, even though its marketed as a young children's book. I love this book, (and I'm 12) and my parents and older sister, (who pretends not to) do too. This book chronicles the stories of two best friends, who just so happen to be hippos. They relate moral messages, but in a far from preachy way. The illustrations are colorful and the two hippos are shown as cute and cuddly. (awwww.... they sell these really cute George and Martha dolls somewhere) In short this is a great book for anybody. So read it!

George and Martha, two hippos who are best friends have amazing adventures in this easy to read, fun to experience set of short tales.

I think, no, I'm sure that my wife likes this book more than our children do, and our children love it. There are now several quotes from this book that have become common place at our home.

One is, "It's important to sample new products."

Try this book, you'll enjoy it thoroughly. The art work appears simple, but it's appropriately wonderful to the tone and stories of these two good friends.

5 stars, no question about it.

As the spouse of an alcoholic in the late stages of the disease, I found this book to be a great resource. I finally saw into the mind of the alcoholic-the pain, the low self-esteem, the mental disorders that develop. My alcoholic is in complete denial, but I find great hope from this book and by learning more about the disease I am better able to detach and feel more compassion for my spouse. Other books just didn't reach me this way.

Material for the book has been very, very extensive researched. The book is extremely comprehensive and well written. It is the best book I have found on this subject. I thought it was written about me personally.

Although I have never met the author of this book, I felt as though I had. I, myself, have experienced the same feelings of desperation and remorse and finally was able to find the path of hope to a truly meaningful way of life. I would suggest this book, not only to the person who questions whether or not he/she is an alcoholic, or even to the person is 100% sure. I would suggest it to anyone who been affected by the disease, and is in search of answers to questions that baffle us all. Thanks to the author for helping me to be a little more honest with myself.

I am grateful to Dale for chapter two that provided me with a personal introspect of "The Alcoholic Mind", it helped tremendously to understand where all this came from in me, and for what I will always need to be on guard.

Very nice workbook, great questions, but when I got it I was shocked at how thin it was. I couldn't believe I had paid so much for so little. A lot of the questions I've seen before.

Wow! I didn't know how much was 'missing' from the book "God, Help Me Pray" until I saw a copy of the workbook in a store! There is every possible question one could have on prayer contained in this nicely-formatted 8X11 workbook. The one thing I DON'T like is the price. This is an expensive workbook. (My church paid for it.)

This might be too much for individual study (at least for me), but would be wonderful for group study. This is workshop stuff! Now the question: is this workbook really necessary to get the best from the original book?

No. The book itself is the meat and potatoes. This workbook--though really thorough--is the dessert. One thing for sure, once you've read these two book, there won't be any questions you've ever had that remain unanswered.

"Be sure you use the book along side the workbook!"

Prayer is one of those personal things that is either done correctly, by biblical instruction, or incorrectly, by emotion, partial knowledge of Scripture, or by what we reason to be right and proper.

Having read the book on which this workbook is founded, I must say that this author stands 110% behind the Bible teaching on prayer, to the degree that (as others have mentioned) some charismatics might get their feathers a bit ruffled.

This workbook is more inductive than explanatory. The book explained. The workbook applies. Knowledge of the Bible is helpful as there are some deep concepts included. But any serious interest in prayer will be met with reflection, insight, and spiritual truths which every child of God is responsible to learn.

Recommended especially for group study.

I spent nearly a month answering all the questions in this workbook. My, my--talk about thorough--this caused me to examine the subject of praying from every angle.

What I liked:
1. (See above.) I wouldn't have EVER thought of some of these concepts.
2. Follows the book which came out earlier. You can sort of examine prayer without the first book, but it's better if you have it. Amazon usually gives you a deal on both.
3. The theology is very solid. Traditional Baptist, I would say.
4. Doesn't delve into all that Pentecostal 'name it and claim it' stuff. The is strictly solid Bible material. (Thank God for meat and potatos!)
5. The Prayer Journal after each chapter. My workbook is marked up!
6. What it really means to pray in Jesus's name! This is very insightful.

What I didn't like:
1. As someone has said the email messages are worded a little differently (some of them) in the workbook. Same thought though. I really liked 'getting' and 'sending' emails from/to God.
2. That I didn't have (wasn't available) the workbook when I first read the book! Sure would have been helpful.

Good stuff. Deeper insight into prayer than 95% of the stuff available. This is not Kay Arthur stuff. Works great for group Bible study!

I also liked "Dragons, Grasshoppers & Frogs!" too. Best easy reading commentary on Revelation.

Great workbook to help personal bible study!

This is a great workbook that is a companion to the study book of the same title by Mr. Parks. I had begun reading the book when I did get a copy of the workbook. I couldn't believe how much the workbook helped!

The book offers many reflective questions for a person or a bible study group to consider. It's great for offering a structure for a lesson, as well as for an individual to really examine what they've learned and reflect on the uses in their own lives for this wonderful study. The spaces to write MAKE you think about the questions and that was a big plus in my own personal study. I think as a study leader, it would also be a great resource to get class participation and to empower your students to do their own study before the class! As for me, I'm going to go back over the beginning and see what I missed the first time!

I believe the workbook could be used as a stand alone study, but I would recommend using the book companion. It offers so much in the lessons, and gives the reader lots to think about.

I definitely recommend this book to anyone who wants to find a closer walk with their Savior through prayer.

Hanna, with a group of fantastic authors, have put together this wonderful book that can guide us through the many choices, challenges and changes we face in the future of Higher Education.

This book is a valuable resource for faculty and administrators who are involved in redefining learning, policies, and practices. Each powerful chapter focuses upon these choices and challenges that will guide us in building a new system of higher education.

The authors goal in writing this book is apparent in every chapter as he "assists the reader in developing a more complete understanding of how teaching and learning, knowledge generation and preservation, organizational design and evalulation, and leadership can all function together within a changing and increasingly competitive external environment to produce a new responsiveness and diversity within higher education". This, coupled with the information on advanced techologies for teaching and learning, makes this book one to read. It is a great book that will indeed enlighten you with the choices, challenges and changes necessary in Higher Education.

Higher Education in an Era of Digital Competition: Choices and Challenges
By: Donald E. Hanna & Associates

Higher Education in and Era of Digital Competition did an excellent job of explaining the current atmosphere of higher education. Although long, 347 pages, this book is very well organized and covers a wide range of topics, including emerging organizational models, leadership, and redefining faculty policies and practices. The overt theme of the book is to relate advances in technology to their current and future impact on Institutes of Higher Education from the perspective of the institution, the faculty, and the students. Yet, the book is also valuable for those entrepreneurs looking for opportunities and ventures in higher education.

Dr. Hanna presents the idea that universities need to evaluate, analyze, and evolve their current practices to reflect the current educational environment. Dr. Hanna has done an excellent job bringing together experts, such as Dr. Chris Dede a nationally recognized leader in Distributed Learning Environments, to contribute thoughts, views, and opinions to this book. The contributing authors did an excellent job of interweaving five main themes through out the book to organize and clarify the current educational situation. Furthermore, Dr. Hanna concludes the book with his opinions on educational impact as well as his proposed challenges to university administrators, faculty, and students.

A Valuable Survey of Technology in Higher Education
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 2002-01-21
This is one of the best books I've ever read related to technology in higher education. It surveys the entire field, looking at what is happening, analyzing it against sound educational theory and taking it to the future by asking the tough question of where will traditional higher education be if it doesn't adapt to the new millennium.

Although it's an easy book to read, it doesn't lend itself well to a summary review. Each chapter is unique, touching on different issues related to technology and innovation, such as change, organizational structure, leadership, ethics, faculty policies and practices and instructional design. Any of these chapters can easily be a book in itself. But in the breath of topics covered resides the book's greatest benefit, which is the ability to provide the reader with a "one-stop" understanding of the entire topic.

If you're interested in going beyond a survey of the field and are committed to changing the status quo, this book will help you navigate the basics of bringing technology to the classroom, dealing with resistance and staying motivated as a change agent for the future. It's most definitely a great book about a very important and timely topic.

Higher Education: Book Review

Review Date: 2001-05-07
The author presents a thorough analysis on the impact of the emergent world trends on higher education, clarifying the view for the institutions in the years to come. Emphasis is given on the following aspects as they challenge the global education in the 21st century:

1. Learning: Roles, Access, Emergent Approaches, Role of Technology and Assessment

2. Organizational Models: Design and evaluation, policies and practices

3. Leadership in the Knowledge Era

Learning

With the emergent digital era, the learning process undergoes reconsiderations that will shape our concept of education forever.

Access. Due to the improvements in the technological area, distances are being shortened making possible for more students to access education from different locations. This is demanding from higher education institutions to acquire and use technology efficiently in order to provide educational programs that reach out to students and are sensitive to cultural diversity.

Emergent Approaches. The following are some of the trends that are driving educational institutions to provide innovated educational experiences for their students:

· The constant and emergent changes worldwide are demanding from students and professionals continuous education or life long learning. According to the author, Americans could be changing careers six times during their professional lives.

· The improvements in communications capabilities are moving the market toward a global economy, which according to the author, will impact the continuous learning process worldwide. This will lead us toward a global learning community.

· Today it is not sufficient to acquire information. The learner must be able to appreciate and understand its meaning, in addition to be able to use it in problem solving situations.

· Emergent educational trends lead organizations to leave behind the traditional organizational approach.

· The increase of two-career families in America and single parents leave little time for students to enroll in traditional educational experiences, at the same time there is an increase in the pressure to learn and become better educated.

· The changing workplace is demanding new skills and abilities that ease people to work together in problem solving situations that requires critical analysis and a personal touch of creativity.

Three steps toward change in institutions in order to achieve effectiveness in the competitive era:

1. Identify the external trends that are forcing institutions toward change. 2. Study the forces that resist change. 3. Develop a rationale for organizational change considering the previous steps.

Higher education institutions should create effective learning environments under the emergent educational approaches and advances in technology. An effective learning experience should encompass an active and engaging process based upon a "constructivist" approach. According to this learning theory, supported by thinkers like John Dewey and Lev Vygotsky, is based on the construction of knowledge by the students allowing them to begin from their previous knowledge and experiences on the subject, being engaged in active and meaningful learning experiences in social activities in which reflection and metacognition will encourage personal, varied and unique outcomes.

The book discusses the basics for the following major constructivist approaches:

a. collaborative and cooperative learning b. problem based learning c. learning communities d. communities of practice

Technology. One of the major challenges of higher education institutions in the 21st century is the use of technology in effective ways to encourage the creation of knowledge based upon this theory, including the development and enhancement of virtual collaborative environments.

Assessment. The author differentiates between assessment and traditional evaluation methods, in terms of what they intend to determine about the learners progress. It is the belief of this author that the evaluation and assessment performed in class should "include strategies that value how students think as well as what they think." As the global learning communities enhances, more sophisticated evaluation strategies are needed. This will guide the educational process in accordance of standards of quality.

Organizational Models

"New forms of universities will emerge," in order to meet the demands of the new millennium.

Due to the learning demands, world trends and the emergent advances in technology that are characterizing the competitive professional area, new models will be considered in order to satisfy the educational needs of students, and professionals seeking continuing education. These will be conceived in new environments that promote alliances between universities world wide, organizations with global scope and impact, creation of institutions in which shorter certification or degree programs are based on specific competencies, and those in which technology is the foundation of the educational process.

Leadership in the Knowledge Era

The leader in the knowledge era must be highly motivated toward innovations and changing, eager to watch, understand and make decisions considering the dynamic nature of the world society in which we live. She ought to understand the meaning of the mission in her hands instead of seeing the final outcome as a monetary reward for her or the institution. According to the author the leader should: · encourage shared leadership. · be culturally sensitive. · demonstrate ability to keep up the pace with world trends. · have the necessary technological skills. · be capable of networking and developing and maintaining interpersonal relationships efficiently.

In addition to these, the leader should be aware that nowadays trends and changes will demand from leaders to consider the creation of new and modification of existing policies concerning the workplace and its personnel.

Finally, in moments in which technology is becoming an essential component in our lives, leaders in higher education institutions face unique challenges that will require new technical and human approaches toward the organization's model. With all the advances in technology, the leader ought to remember that values and human virtues are the foundation of any corporation.

Visions and Choices for Higher Ed

Donald Hanna and his supporting authors have done a fine job illuminating some of the interesting aspects and issues of the growing technological world of higher ed. I enjoyed the organization of the book. It is a compilation of interesting essays on various topics, all of which are relevant to the online university.
I found Chapter 3-Advanced Technologies and Distributed Learning in Higher Education by Chis Dede to be facinating. This sort of vision and creativity to picture what is possible is essential in moving us forward into new and uncharted territory. Dede offers "vignettes" to illustrate creative uses of technology for distributed learning and visions of how technology may be used in the future. These sort of changes have the possibility to make substaintial changes to the higher education model.
Other chapters such as Chapter 8-Who Owns Knowledge in a Networked World? by John Tallman offer current practical knowledge. As a professional engaged in course development, it is valuable to become knowledgable regarding such issues. As questions and debates arise as to the equitable ownership and allocation of revenue from distance learning materials, it is important that faculty are well-versed in the applicable laws.
Chapters such as Chapter 10-Global Access to Learning: Gender, Poverty, and Race by Janet Poley address concerns of equity and ethics. It is essential that these conversations occur now during the development of digital learning. Some choices and decisions can not be undone. It's important that each twist and turn in the growing path of distance education is subjected to thoughtful consideration. The potential benefit to everyone is great. But also the potential to further alienate certain populations exists. Only through careful consideration can the appropriate foundation be laid to benefit all.
Overall, this book addresses some facinating and pressing issues in the growing world of distance education. There are many facets to consider and various points of view. Hanna's book is a great place to start the conversation.

I have a 2 1/2 and almost 4 yo. The book is great for both of them. My 4 yo knows his alphabet and numbers and this book is a great way to reinforce what he has already learned. The wonderful thing about this book is it really helps with writing skills. One side of page is devoted to practicing writing the word or number and the other page has a game associated with the word. Examples are a question with multiple choice answer, connect the dots, and tracing. There are also pages with games to play in everyday life, i.e. scavenger hunt around the house looking for numbers. There are also sections for learning shapes and colors which is better suited for my 2yo.
I highly recommend this book. My kids are always asking to do the workbook.

My son and I loved this workbook. The illustrations were funny, the instructions were clear, and there was a good variety of activities so that if he became bored with one, we could move onto another.
My only criticism is that I wish there were more pages of "practice space" for letter and number writing review. Other than that, it is a fantastic book and I highly recommend it to anyone who homeschools or who wants to boost what their child is already learning

This wonderful book challenges the prevailing approach in special education to segregate special ed kids from regular ed kids, notwithstanding the federal requirement that they be educated in the least restrictive environment. The authors take on the justifications, rationalizations and excuses for the status quo and make a compelling case for including ALL children in one classroom.

Most importantly, they give examples of how it can be done and is being done workably and successfully.

Even if you don't buy into authors' argument for full inclusion, the book is chock full of useful strategies and ideas that a teacher can use to diffeentiate instruction for students with different capabilities within the same classroom.

We bought this book for all the schools in a New York City district (33) and principals and teachers have been raving about it. The text has so many examples from real classrooms that teachers are excited about trying some of the strategies the authors explain.

I was surprised at the level of detail and specificity included and am eager to see what my preservice students think of the book.

This book is filled with ideas on how to practically meet the needs of inclusive education. "Stepping Stones" give suggested activities to find how "inclusive" your school is and ways to collaborate with other individuals within your school and community on the road to inclusive schools. This would be a useful tool to educators and parents, to discover ways to adapt academic instruction to meet the needs of all students, both general and special education.

practical, useful, well written, insightful.

I will be using this text for my graduate and undergraduate courses. It provides one of the best descriptions of an inclusive school environment that I have encounter in all the textbooks that I have reviewed. There are many practical tips and strategies for meeting the special learning needs of a variety of populations. It promotes a child-centered philosophy pervades. This is a great professional resource for anyone who wants to get a good overview of inclusive education.

Joyful Learning is a dream come true for any busy teacher! With quick ideas that are simple to implement, any teacher can utilize this book in lesson planning and implementation. As an educator, these strategies are easy to learn and implement whether you are a high school P.E. teacher, a kindergarten teacher, or a 5th grade science teacher. When I want to motivate and engage my students, I let them choose one of the strategies and they use it to deepen their understanding, work collaboratively, and build community within my classroom. They love it! In fact, since these strategies differentiate for all learners, the entire school will intergrate them into practice next school year from Pre-K to 8th Grade!

A perfect pick for practicing teachers.

I just received this book at the "Inclusion Works" conference in Austin, TX. From what I've read so far, there are many techniques that educators can use in the classroom for all students (regular, bilingual, special needs, etc.) I am so pleased to have been able to see Dr. Kluth show some of these techniques at the conference. I look forward to finishing her book and discovering all it has to offer. THANK YOU!

I wish my teachers had taught like this!

As a former special education student I found myself wishing my teachers had read this wonderful book! I think my educational experience would have been much more positive if the teachers had used the activities in Joyful Learning. I would love to see the classrooms where these strageties are used. It would be inspiring to see all students fully engaged in a classrroom where respect for learning differences is modeled and all students are engaged in learning. This book offers many ideas and activities to begin this process.

[[ASIN:1401919030 The Last Dropout: Stop the Epidemic!] is perhaps one of the most important books published in the last decade. Expecting the usual dry academic format, I was delighted to find this an easy flowing read filled with passion and common sense solutions to an epidemic too long ignored. I would recommend this be required reading for teachers in training, educators at all levels, business people, legislators and parents. "Today's youth is our ONLY next generation" and Milliken addresses protocols that are achievable within the next 5-10 years to wipeout this "killer of our youth".

This book deserves YOU to read it. If you didn't believe you could make a difference-now you should! If you didn't know how to make that difference - now you do! With compassion and aliveness in his words, Bill Milliken's The Last Dropout brings forth the triumphs and perils that laud championing for our youth. At times, I wanted to cry, at other times I laughed, but mostly I affirmed myself to do all I can when I can for our youth. This book is training, and yet a testament to the thousands of foot soldiers disguised as site coordinators, Graduation Coaches, counselors, teachers, and businessmen, who are out there working out those five basics and doing W.I.T. (Whatever It Takes) to help kids stay in school, successfully learn and prepare for life.

I am in the business of trying to keep young people from dropping out of school and I think this is the best resources I've ever read to give concrete ideas and real hope for how the community can help schools keep kids in school. I recommend it to anyone who is interested in improving public education or building a better trained work force.

This book provides a glimpse at a 30 year movement to help change public schools in America. These simple but challenging principles can help transform communities and schools to not allow kids to continue to dropout of school. You not only get to understand a national organization's plan for change, but you get a glimpse into Bill Milliken's life journey. Fabulous book!!!!!

The book is easy to read and provides valuable information every community needs to implement a community driven program such as Communities In Schools. We must provide services to children of all ages in our community that are meaningful and life changing/guiding. This book leads the way. The five basics are, indeed, what every child needs and deserves. I compliment Mr. Milliken for placing a high priority on every child's future and then showing us how to do the same.

This book does give good iformation on greyhounds. However it does make it sound as though you have to be with your greyhound 24/7. In my case, my greyhound does do well with being separated from us for a few hours at a time. The bottom line is if your not a dog person willing to give your time and devotion to any dog, then a greyhound or any dog breed is not for you, and you shouldn't have a dog. All dogs need time and attention, they also need trained. You just have to remember, that although a greyhound is fully grown, when they come into your home they are like a giant puppy.

A GREAT companion to Adopting the Racing Greyhound

I think this new book edited by Cynthia Branigan and primarily distributed in England, is a great addtion to the new greyhound owner's library. It really focuses on getting to know your dog and all the positive aspects of adopting a greyhound. It doesn't bash the racing industry as so many other readers would like to see which would probably just inhibit many people from persuing adoption as they may think that the majority of these dogs are scarred for life from their experiences. Instead this book helps to share real life experiences from owners and foster parents alike. The racing pictures are definitely english, but the pictures of the dogs at liesure are from the actual owners and foster parents, it's wonderful to see how much love and compassion goes into the day to day life of a retired racer.

Being a seasoned greyhound owner myself, I would recommend this book to any new greyhound family that wants a glimpse into what the future holds for their new life with these majestic, loyal and very often comical companions.

A TERRIFIC ADDITION

I?ve just finished "Living with a Greyhound" and think it?s a terrific addition to my greyhound library. As the title indicates it is not a guide to adopting a racing greyhound; Ms. Branigan covered that territory first and best in her classic, the appropriately titled "Adopting the Racing Greyhound".
"Living" covers just what the title says, what goes on after the adoption when the hound is part of the family. I thought the articles on greyhounds as therapy dogs, in agility trials, as lure coursers, and in many other arenas were very instructive and helpful. All were written by owners who have extensive experience in the area they discuss, and this gives them real authority and credibility.
As an aside, the same thing applies to Ms. Branigan. The fact that she has been running a greyhound adoption agency since before the first edition of "Adopting" came out in the early ?90?s gives her a wealth of experience and credibility that I don?t see matched in subsequent guides, which unlike "Living" don't cover any new ground and are basically just rehashes of her original.
"Living with a Greyhound" is very readable and its production values are great, nicely printed and bound with beautiful pictures which all seemed fresh to me. I?d recommend this to any greyhound owner or anyone else interested in the breed.

An Excellent, Affordable Overview for Potential Adopters

I think the book "Living With A Greyhound" accomplishes exactly what it sets out to do: it describes what it is like to live with a former racing dog. I don't understand how anyone can complain that it does not go into the downside of Greyhound racing--that is not the subject of the book.
I loved reading the first-hand experiences of people who have adopted. They explained how they do such things as get them used to their cat or how they take them into nursing homes as therapy dogs. And the part written by the woman who told of how she nursed her dog through his final illness was very touching and memorable.
Cynthia Branigan edited this book, she did not write it. The last time I checked, an editor's job is to make sure the information presented is factual and readable. Of course, Living With A Greyhound is both of those things.
As for comparing this book to "The Ultimate Greyhound", again, that was edited by Mark Sullivan, not written by him. Furthermore it costs more than twice as much as "Living" does.
In short, "Living With A Greyhound" presents a potential adopter with a comprehensive, affordable glimpse into what it is like to share your life with one of these special dogs.
