I have lived in Philly my whole life and am a very proud Philadelphian. I love reading up on my home town. When I came across "Moon Philadelphia" in the book store I was shocked at the amount of useful information crammed into this book. Gavin's work is so easy to read and comes from a local point of view that it is head and shoulders above any other guidebook I've read. This book is a must buy for any Philadelphian, new, old or visiting for the first time.

Having just recently moved to Philadelphia, this book has proved to be extremely useful. There's a lot of practical yet interesting information that has increased my appreciation for this great city. Accompanied with a wealth of data, pictures and maps, Gavin's enthusiasm is apparent with her insider's guide to this historic town. I would recommend this book to any visitor or Philadelphia resident new and old.

A HUGE help! I am glad I found this book

I was walking around a wedding expo, getting depressed over the prices of everything when I stumbled on this book, the author was at the expo.

The book is not super long but is very thorough and easy to read. I tried a few of the suggestions and can honestly say that I think I saved at leat $5000 on my wedding (no lie!)

The best sections are about flowers and favors, but the other stuff is good too. I thought the section about finding out who will help me pay for it was great and very helpful (oh and it worked).

I am not going to ramble I just noticed this book was on here and wanted to let you all know it's a great buy!

My wedding was beautiful and didn't break the bank and I really think this little book helped

This helped me SO much!

OK, God knows I have been to enough weddings that you would think I could plan mine easily. Uhhhh..NO!

I was clueless and my fiance (now husband) was fairly useless (but I love him anyway).

I happened to see this book on a website (sorry Amazon, it wasn't yours) and figured for [$$$] or whatever it was, it was worth a shot. I am glad I picked it up.

The advice on flowers alone was amazing. The ideas for saving money on my dress..a lifesaver! I know that sounds overdone but I am serious.

I basically took one of their ideas for my reception and had a great time. It was like a 4 hour cocktail hour. People LOVED the food. I got so much feedback.

A good find!

A great find!!

I was walking around a Wedding Expo in Huntington, NY when I met the author of this book (they were at the event). By the time I got to their booth I was getting depressed over the fact that I knew my wedding would cost way more than I could ever afford.

I decided to buy the book, I figured $14 was a good investment. I am glad I bought it.

The book is easy and fun to read and has some great tips. The section on flowers and favors was such a big help. Almost every subject I could think of was covered. They really put together a great guide.

I can honestly say that this $14 investment saved me at least $5,000 in the planning of my wedding.

I think any bride planning their wedding should pick up this book if they can find it.

Actually I'm having an education on architecture. So this type of information is very useful for me. This book shows me a variety of different kinds of housing, planning, and even some ideas about decorating. Seeing the examples is the best way to analyse a certain topic, and this book is a guidebook for all architects and beginners.

Growing up as a child, Enid Blyton books were all I read, I cannot begin to explain how much I love reading and how often I do it. For years I tried finding her books and couldn't, it seems the stores in the U.S don't carry her books. But finally I was able to find them because I want all of my neices to be able to experience the joy I had once I opened one of her books. I'm in the process of purchasing as many as I can. My child will also be a fan of Enid. She allows children to be children. So from the bottom of my heart, thank you.

Enid Blyton's fantasies make for the pleasantest memories

It's been an age and then some since I read this book but I have only pleasant memories of the story. Enid Blyton's fantasies were always fascinating and entertaining for me and the Wishing Chair stories no less so than any of the others. Enid Blyton weaves a story that transports you to a fun and fanciful place where the adventures are exciting and the happy endings always come. Perfect for pre-teens and even teens who still like their adventure tales less fraught with danger and nightmare fodder than the average Harry Potter installment.

Great book, but it's Mirage, which they published in 1997
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 1999-01-03
This is almost the same book as Mirage, published by the same authors in 1997. The only difference I noticed after a quick review in the bookstore is the addition of a 20-25 page epilogue that deals with the recent budget surplus and how it came to be. The epilogue is good, but I wish it were longer.

Mirage/Balancing Act is a great book. If you read David Stockman's The Triumph of Politics, and wondered how we got out of the budgetary hole in which we found ourselves about the time of Stockman's departure, Mirage/Balancing Act is an fascinating update. Happily, Mirage/Balancing Act is even more balanced than Stockman's work.

Hager and Pianin have a transparent writing style that is a pleasure to read. As a result, the reader effortlessly absorbs the detailed information that they present.

Perhaps Mirage/Balancing Act will receive the attention it merits when Congress and the President face up to the still-considerable budgetary issues that remain to be resolved on a more permanent basis than they have been to date. Read this book and stay tuned.

This thorough and enjoyable book reads like a good novel!

When assigned to read a book that covered the history of the budget deficit crisis for my Grad school class I was less than overwhelmed with excitement. However, these authors make the complicated history of the budget so interesting and gripping, I couldnt put it down. Though a slow reader, i must admit, I was able to finish this off in less than a week. The discussions it inspired in class were lively and germane to the world today. I could not recommend this book more highly!

Buying antiques at auctions revealed in everyday language
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 2003-06-19
John Marion has written a very readable account of how to buy affordable antiques at Sotheby's Auction House in new York. He takes you through the process of registering and bidding in a common sense way that takes the mystery out of the process. In addition, he makes a compelling argument that many of the objects you buy at a department store might better be purchased at a reputable auction house as investments which you can enjoy for years to come. The Best of Everything is a tresure in itself.

This book, Bucking the Deficit: Economic Policymaking in America, is a gripping read. So many Americans today are interested in learning more about the economy and fiscal policy, and this is truly the book for them. In clear, precise prose, the book discusses the economic policymaking process and the limitations faced by the executive branch of government. While your favorite political junkie will love this book, it is also accessible for the average American.

Informative regarding current "hot" economic issues
Helpful Votes: 2 out of 2 total.
Review Date: 1996-05-17
I am one of the authors of this book. Cal and I wrote it because so many people say the economy is the most important issue affecting their voting decisions, yet few really understand the economic policymaking process, the limits of what the President and Congress can do, and the current economic issues we are grappling with (e.g., balancing the budget). This book was written for the average American who wants to know more about these important issues. We focused on making it readible and intuitive. It's not full of a lot of jargon. If you want to make a more informed vote this November, if you want more insight into when politicians are telling you the truth about the economy and when they are lying, give it a read

This book will show you how to use different containers for plants, how to create new plants from the parent plant. Explains tools etc. A really good book for us thrifty people!

If you've ever wandered through a friend's or neighbor's garden and seen something so remarkable and yet so simple that you can't believe you didn't think of it yourself, you have some idea of what it's like to read this book. The author has done a wonderful job compiling information on everything from amending soil and fending off pests to creating garden structures from free materials. This book is a motherlode of ideas. I've been using the library's copy, but I'm going to spend a few of my well-pinched pennies on a copy of my own.

Since the TV crews haven't made it to my house yet, I keep reading these books for tips to transform my home. This one is particularly appealing, since it spells out the costs and time investment for the projects.
The sample rooms are in real houses and include living rooms, dirning rooms, kitchens, baths and bedrooms. Good color photos accompany the text.

Creative & stylish but affordable

I read the book in a day - easy and fun to read. The book is composed of various real-life makeovers for various rooms. Each contains before and after shots as well as information on how the look was achieved, how problems were solved and the final budget tally. I will refer back to this book for ideas from time to time. It's biggest strength is that the ideas are realistic and affordable (but not cheap).
