The book covers the classic areas of performance engine building. What differs it from other books is two things: 1. These guys have done theire homework. It is written by experienced enginebuilders, and they know what they are talking about. 2. they are clearly used to work on a budget. They don`t just pick out the most expensive bolt-on parts, but suggest several solutions for the builder who do not have the funds to buy such toys.
Last, they are realistic. No nonsense about 700 HP, but several encouragements to keep it functional. All in all a book worth the money.

This is a cute little book of direct copies of one of the early editions of this work. If you like Debussy's atmosferes and orchestal colors, having this blueprint can provide you with insights on how the magic it's done.

This is a good collection of classic poems for children. But the table of contents does not build the link to the individual poem. The lack of link makes the search a bit clumsy. But I still enjoy the reading of this book page by page.

This book is not worth the listed price. School bookstores will have it cheaper, but still the material is outdated and not well written. It the reader's intent is purely academic it is a good sourse of information and numbers, but will not enlighten them on the subject.

Not quite for res

This book is definitely decent to say the least. You need not be a culinary master; the recipes are relatively simple and easy to prepare, and as far as I can tell, none of the recipes take more than an hour. However, the title is deceiving. As an incoming freshman, I expected it to use microwaves and hotpots, but it requires stoves and ovens. This book is good for the busy, hungry student, but not for one still in the res halls. It is aimed well at the college community, complete with sections on different drinks and munchies. The recipe names are a little cheesy at times, and I'm not quite sure how a casserole called Hangover Helper would help a hangover, but it was good enough for me. If I could I'd give it three and a half stars; maybe I will compile my own in my upcoming college years.

A good book to learn the basics of home budgeting

Someone who has problems with budgeting and organizing their financial matters would benefit from this book. Though I was hoping the book would go into a little more detail on budgeting, the author does provide the reader with a step by step guideline in putting together a weekly budget sheet. The book is pretty basic and to the point and even includes blank budget sheets. I would recommend this book to a young adult who is experiencing real budgeting for the very first time. It gives you the tools you need in order to really see where your money is going. I give it three stars.

Traditional budgeting versus key performance indicators
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 2003-07-10
Jeremy Hope and Robin Fraser are Directors of the Beyond Budgeting Round Table, an international management research consortium. They are the authors of 'Beyond Budgeting' (2003). This article was published in the February 2003-issue of Harvard Business Review.

The authors believe that budgeting, as most corporations practice it, should be abolished. In the absence of budgets, alternative goals and measures move to the foreground and every part of the company has to be judged against performance comparisons with its peers' and world-class benchmarks. The authors explain that organization have to break free from the traditional, fixed annual targets and set longer-term goals based on benchmarks. The elements or factors measured are key performance indicators (KPI), which fulfill the self-regulatory functions of budgets. These KPIs should result in rolling forecasts that look five to eight quarters into the future and help managers to continually reassess current action plans as market and economic conditions change. The authors use a simple table to show the five main differences between fixed and relative performance targets. The authors complement the article with a detailed description of the problems with budgets, examples of new performance management at Scandinavian bank Svenska Handelsbanken and Swedish wholesaler Ahlsell. Through these changes, "knowledge flows between frontline people and headquarters should increase, realizing the full potential of a radically decentralized organization."

The authors take on a highly ambitious issue - the traditional budgeting process - and I believe that they do not succeed. They make it sound somewhat too simple and do not really provide us with a road map. I believe that readers are probably better served by Kaplan & Norton's balanced scorecard. The article is written in simple business US-English.

I loved this edition of Let's Go. A delightful, lighthearted introduction to Rome and its history, the book provides helpful suggestions and clear maps.

Let's Go...Or Let's Not

Of all the tour books I used in my recent trip to Italy (and considering I'm a tour book junkie I used quite a few), Let's Go Rome was the worst. Although allright for a guide to the sights (although I believe their policy must be if it sells tickets, it goes in the book regardless of quality) it's recommendations for everything else were terrible. By the end of our trip my companion wanted to ceremonially burn the book. Enough said?

more than any other Let's Go book i've used - and i've used many - this book reveals the immaturity of its writers.

Even worse than the fact that this may be the worst-written Let's Go book ever is the bad advice that punctuates the bad writing. Christina Svendsen and her staff consistently direct readers to the seediest parts of the Eternal City. If you are an over-priveleged Harvard student with an utter disregard for your safety, this is the book for you. Oh yes -- and to get your money's worth, you should also have an abysmal sense of humour.

I got this book from the library hoping to find some neat tips to save on groceries and kitchen items. This book gave me neither. It talks alot about how to cook gourmet type meals, not at all cheap. Not impressed with this book. I am glad I didn't order it.

A good book.

This is one of my many cookbooks. I like how the author gives substitutions for ingredients if you don't have them on hand. I wish that there were illustrations and that's why I only gave it a 4. P.S- The honey glazed pheasant/chicken is excellent!!!

Indeed a misleading title!

I agree should have been called "Cheapskate Gourmet" or something like that. I did not find a book chock-full of big money-saving tips like I was hoping for. It's mostly a gourmet cookbook with tips that help curb costs specifically of gourmet cooking. I'm sure this book will save me money if it helps curb our habit of eating out, but it would probably increase grocery bill of a family already cooking at home.

I also am not thrilled at the paperback novel publishing type, with the small print, and binding that's hard to keep open. I'm sure it kept the book affordable, but it's not ideal for a cookbook!

Want to waste your money? Buy this book...

This format and the content of this book are tedious and unentertaining. Every single money saving tip in here can be obtained from internet frugal sites for free. And on top of that, the recipes are ridiculous. Not only are they not family friendly, you could blow your entire food budget for the week purchasing the speciality items to make just one of the meals. Want to feed your kids Sea Scallops, Pheasant and Prosciutto wrapped asparagus on the cheap? Well then you might buy this book? But if you want to cook these things on a regular basis anyway there are much better recipes and cookbooks out there for gourmet meals such as this so you've pretty much wasted your money anyway you go with this book.

Not at all cheap!!!

Unless maybe you are a single person who eats out at fancy resturants, and would like to consider this an alternative. Then again, that is if you could only understand half of the recipe directions! This book is the only ... thing you will be getting out of it. Not at all worth the money, (good thing I checked it out at the library before buying it), I would reccomend either The complete Tightwad Gazette, or Not Just Beans anytime before I would this book!!!!
