As a frequent travler to NYC,I have actually used this book and I have to say that the author really knows the city inside out(or East side-West side, sorry couldn't resist) A very good book for both visitors or people wanting to re-locate, I found quite a few of the things he listed to be accurate and even though the book was written a few years back, still relevant. Finally, He's refreshingly honest and funny as well. Have a nice trip!

This book is great! It has everything from a chapter on finding apartments, to where to get cheap groceries! For New Yorkers, or Future New Yorkers, who aren't overloaded with cash, this is a book you can't afford to do without!

It's okay, but based on some of the review by others I thought this book would have a better discription of neighborhoods & the advantages/disadvantages of living in them. Gave a good overview of how the rental market works, but is missing lots of the free fun stuff & advice given in some other books.

Reviewed by Susan Pettrone for Reader Views (6/07)

From the moment I read the title, I was curious as to why it claimed to do something other weight loss books didn't....namely make it possible for the common man (or woman, in my case) to lose weight and stay on a budget at the same time. I think we all have seen the ads on T.V. that claim for $XX a week you too can achieve your goal of a slimmer, trimmer you! But what is not mentioned in those ads is the fact that in order to do just that, you must also invest in special meals for yourself to achieve that weight loss. And it isn't just the fact that you must buy some of the more popular weight loss systems' special food, it is also a matter of the cost of such systems and how to manage not only your special diet but feed a family as well. Frankly, the complexity of some systems, combined with the cost, don't appeal to this reviewer. I live a busy life and anything that adds difficulty to my everyday routine is simply not for me.

Within the pages of this book, author Kimberly Ford explains how you can and will lose weight with her method, while achieving both a thinner you but also achieve through this book a stronger sense of self-worth in the process. Many of us have dieted and met that target goal only to find mere weeks later all of our hard work was for nothing, we gained the weight back, and not necessarily because the weight loss plan was a failure, but because we had not changed habits in self-esteem, spiritual-growth and attitude during our weight loss.

In " MoneyWise Weight Loss: The Faith-based Plan for Building a Better Body on a Budget" we are taken step by step through the process of weight loss while finding and keeping a more positive and less stressful you in the process. In this book I found sections dealing with emotional eating...that is, eating not for the sake of filling an empty stomach but to soothe or reward oneself through food. The author also explains how stress can affect our eating habits and sabotage the best diet available. Through better management of stress within ones life, excess weight can not only be removed but can stay off.

But the best thing I found in this book was in direct relationship to its title. I found that weight loss doesn't mean you have to take out a second mortgage on the house or dip into your kid's college fund to pay for it. It can be a very affordable process and the author makes that very clear within the pages of this book.

With lists that are both extremely helpful as well as healthy, the author does everything possible to help readers achieve their target goal, short of moving in and monitoring you every bite. Everything you need to achieve your goal of a slimmer, happier you is within the pages of this book.

To say I was impressed with this book would be an understatement. As someone who has tried various programs to lose "those last 5 lbs" after the birth of my sons, I never thought I'd agree with any weight-loss program. And to be completely honest, I have seen too many programs work and then within weeks or months the individuals falling back to their old ways and back at their pre-diet weight again. Not so with this program.

I found that eating healthier using the tips within this book was very simple. The author spells out anything the dieter might need in simple language and to this writer that was its greatest appeal. In this day and age of electronics that can only be used by teenagers, and books on the market that take 1000 pages to say nothing helpful, this book was a refreshing change. Not only can I see this program working for weight loss but I can also see it playing a big part in self-esteem and spiritual strength as well. I recommend "MoneyWise Weight Loss" for anyone who has tried program after program with no success. It is well-written, straight to the point and inspirational as well. I would recommend this book for anyone who is looking for a faith-based way to get fit on a budget. It is commonsense knowledge in this complicated world we all live in today.

Kimberly Floyd has written a remarkable, insightful and inspiring book that will provide you with the tools to transform your physical from the inside out.

What makes MONEYWISE WEIGHTLOSS unique is that FLOYD provides readers with up to the minute research, Scripture, inspirational quotes and personal testimony as well as information on how to buy fruits and vegetables in season to save money and obtain them during peak times for flavor and sweetness. In addition, I love that her approach helps those seeking to transform their eating habits into a healthier one is that of helping people save money instead of spend more money as many "diet" programs subtly make people do.

The diet industry is a billion dollar, brand driven industry, but America seems to be moving further and further away from eating to live instead of eating because it tastes good and food is readily available.
MONEYWISE WEIGHT LOSS is the perfect anecdote.

They say there is a spiritual solution to every problem and MONEYWISE WEIGHT LOSS by Kimberly Floyd is THE solution. FLOYD's passion for helping people to take back their temple is heartfelt and admirable.
You'll value this resource immensely!

Do you struggle constantly with dieting and weight loss? Does it seem like every program you've ever tried just didn't work? Do you find yourself saying, "if I only had more money, I would join a gym or start a diet program"? Do you have a litany of other excuses you spew each time the subject of diet and exercise comes up? In MONEYWISE WEIGHT LOSS, author Kimberly Floyd shoots down each excuse you may have, and gives tools and advice that if followed expressly, will help to finally shed those excess pounds.

"If you put a small value upon yourself, rest assured the world will not raise your price."-Author Unknown. Powerful phrase, right? That phrase is what Floyd opens with in this book, now talk about a reality check! She then shares her own struggle with weight loss, slaps us with the brutal words of her doctor - "the effect of obesity on our heart was like asking an engine designed for a Volkswagen to haul the weight of a Mack truck." As I looked down at my own body, carrying 100+ pounds more than it should, I realized how true this statement is.

The entire book is chock full of thought-provoking scriptures, inspirations, tools, exercises, recipes, advice and everything we need to once and for all win the battle of the bulge, and treat our body as the temple it was designed to be. If you struggle with weight loss, as I do, then the purchase of MONEYWISE WEIGHT LOSS is a worthy investment.

I just received this book in the mail yesterday. I unwrapped it, and started flipping through it. The chapter headings are the places the author wishes to recommend that I visit. Ok, good. BUT WHAT USE IS A TRAVEL BOOK WITH NO FREAKING MAPS IN IT?

Travel books must be BROWSABLE. And to be browsable, travel books must have MAPS to show me where the stuff they are writing about is located. This book is strong on narrative and weak on illustrative graphics, to the point of unusability. If a future edition were to add some of this supportive material, I might be able to figure out if the book were any good.

My wife and I agree with the philosophy of this book...we think it's definitely on the right track. We have grown weary of the gigantic Orlando resorts and their artificial commercialism. We prefer Lake Wales and Bok Tower, for example, places that are both old-fashioned and a sensory pleasure. The same is true of other destinations recommended in Real Florida, such as St. Petersburg and Sanibel Island, although the latter can be a stretch of the budget. The best part is, the people in these unique places are usually sincere and unaffected, and the pace is much more appealing than that of theme park mania. Congratulations to the author for his "budget-romance" concept

My husband and I stole away last autumn for a week in Florida and we had a wonderful time using Real Florida as a supplement to a Frommer's guide. It was my first visit to Sanibel, but we will be back again some day. Fabulous in fall! This book offers a unique and very cool blend of budget-minded things and places that also lean toward romance. What a perfect combination. For me, the fact that it doesn't include detailed maps isn't an issue. Travel book maps are too small to be of much use anyway, and we always stop at Welcome Centers to get free Florida maps.

My wife and I will be taking this book with us again this March when we visit Florida for spring training. We relied on it last year for day trips and one or two overnight explorations around the state. It is excellent. You can tell this book is independently written and not the typical corporate tour guide. The tips and opinions suited us just right as we prefer to see Florida off the beaten path. Besides, we've already seen most of the touristy "hot spots." Thankfully, Real Florida gives you plenty of alternatives that are not too pricey, and we look forward to checking out more of them on our next trip.

What Dream Did They Have In Mind?
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 2 total.
Review Date: 2005-08-20
This was an optimistic 'dream' when they ousted Clinton and the Democrats. Bush did not win that election. The state of Florida conspired so that the Governor's brother would take over even though Tennessean Al Gore had the most votes. That is hypocrisy. That is anarchy.

All of these thing they hyped as their agenda didn't matreialize: Strengthen the family (Ha), Balance the Budget (Clinton already had it balanced -- it is far in the red now and two wars taking place with no end in sight), and Replace the Welfare State. They didn't replace it, they almost demolished it. After all, both Bushes are wealthy and don't know what it is to be needy. Now, TennCare which Clinton's administration started in 1994 as an example to all of America has failed big time. We can't get any of the medicines we need, nor the medical care. Many of us will die as a result.

Newt Gingrich and Dick Armey either had big ideas for the House of Representatives, but it didn't work either. The Senate is over the House, so why all the hype about something they could not possibly do. 2002 has come and gone and the budget is 100% worse than it was in 1994; that's because of the military costs and now the cost of gasoline is skyrocketing here -- because we put those oil wells out of business in the Persian Gulf and now Iran and Iraq. What do they expect -- that we will all stand up and cheer for their failures.

Had Clinton not been such a randy fellow and ignored the demands of the country's future, the Republicans would not have had the chance to foul up royally. I picked this book because of the flag on the cover.

Beyond the Contract....

Review Date: 2001-08-19
"Restoring the Dream" goes far beyond its predecessor, "Contract With America." It talks in-depth about the accomplishments and minor failures of the then new Congress, and how the Clinton Administration will handle the bills passed by Congress. Each bill, representing the ten points outlined in "Contract With America," is followed with a detailed summary of why Congress believes the given bill is needed. Of some interest is, term limits, the Presidential line item veto, the Taking Back Our Streets Act, and the need for National Missile Defense. In an almost "Mr. Smith Goes to Washington"-esque style, Newt Gingrich went to Washington to take down the bad guys, bureaucrats. We all know their kind. Those who spend years upon years walking the corridors of the Capitol Building, out of touch with their voters and hometown, and seeing every event in a political sense. They are greedy, self-serving opportunists with no regard for the rest of America. The only solution to ridding Congress of these people is through term limits. "Restoring the Dream" talks of why Representatives should be limited to 4 terms in the House, and why Senators should be limited to 2 terms in the Senate. Interestingly enough, Congressional Republicans felt strongly about enacting a Presidential line item veto, even with a completely incompetent President, Bill Clinton. They knew it was in the best interest of the country and for the progress of democracy to quickly enact such legislation. They did. For those not acquainted with the concept of line item veto, it is when the President gives a warm reception to a bill passed by Congress, but finds one minor flaw and ends up having to veto the entire bill. With line item veto power, a President can veto certain mandates in a given bill, but still pass the bill in its modified form. This means more can get done for the people of America, and less partisan bickering on Capitol Hill. Urban areas have been deteriorating rapidly sense Lyndon B. Johnson's proclamation of his "Great Society" in the mid 1960s. Murders, drugs, gangs, and robberies have become all too common in America's largest cities. The Taking Back Our Streets Act addresses such concerns. Children must be taught at an early age that they are responsible for their behavior and punishments do follow for inappropriate or violent behavior. They need to grasp the American Dream and understand that they too, can contribute a great deal to society. Without such education, violence in our urban areas is inevitable. The Taking Back Our Streets Act stops crime in our cities dead in its tracks. Iraq, Iran, North Korea, and Sudan are just some nations attempting to obtain or already possessing nuclear missiles. The threat grows rapidly with each passing day, and the US currently has no system to protect its soil from a nuclear attack. National Missile Defense is a must for the modern and unpredictable world that we live in. The legislation mentioned in this book became the National Missile Defense Act of 1999, passed by both chambers of Congress, and signed into law by President Clinton.

Even thought this book is five years old, it's intriguing to see how the plan by the House Republicans actually came to be and how successful it was in transforming America. Their main objective was to improve conditions for families, create an opportunity society, and balance the budget. In my opinion, they succeeded at all three, and then some. Through emphasizing personal responsibility, trusting the individual, and placing power back in the hands of state and local authorities did the Republicans promote their message that large, inefficient government was useless and harmful and that decentralization truly epitomizes compassionate conservatism. Now that we have a balanced budget, welfare reform, lower crime, and booming economy, the GOP can take credit for the work they performed to make these unattainable goals during Democrat-run Congresses a reality. These men and women proved that lower taxation, deregulation, limited government, and faith in the local community can make the American dream possible.

Phase II of the Bold Plan to Take on the D.C. Establishment

Review Date: 1999-04-18
I didn't used to believe the rhetoric leveled against President Clinton regarding his "borrowing" of conservative issues for political gain. But now I understand where such accusations come from. This book was written in 1995, after the new Republican Majority (104th Congress) finished its first 100 days of marathon legislation in order to fulfill its Contract With America (documented in another book). Restoring the Dream is an outline of the next steps in the Republican Plan to remake Government. The book begins by enumerating the success of the first 100 days of the Contract and devotes the remainder of the book to elaborating on new pledges for further reform. To say that such a plan is (was) bold would be an understatement. I have gained new respect for the Republican Party after reading this book and it has called into question the common conservative stereotypes. Unless this book is a cruel hoax and I'm a dupe, I believe that the Republican Party genuinely wishes to ensure that all Americans have an equal opportunity to succeed and to achieve the American Dream. In retrospect, it is a shame that Republicans were demonized and maligned by the establishment, having to endure accusations that simply do not coincide with the proposals outlined in this book. And while this book is certainly "dated" by now, it is instructive to see how much the Republicans have actually delivered on their pledges and promises - especially on welfare reform and a balanced budget. I recommend this book to every American interested in understanding the forces that are shaping America's future.

I found David's book to be entertaining, full of useful information and extremely motivating. Most of us harbor a dream that we push deep inside because "it's just not practical" or we have no real plan to make it a reality. This book offered me hope for those dreams. It was inspiring to follow two ordinary middle class people pursue a vision and intimately share their experience. Following their journey was exciting and offered practical advise. I highly recommend this book to anyone seeking practical tips on making your dream a reality!

This book is nice and interesting, it really can give you inspiration and in me it has awoken an old dream, to travel around the globe. BUT, this book is'n a guid-book and it doesn't give you a lot advice. It's more of a journal, in which the authour tells us about his adventures during a bike trip across the US. What I liked about this book is that the authour, D. Wooten, isn't an athlet and not an experienced bike rider, and it's nice to resd about the challenges and the triumphs of the "real people".

I was kind of disappointed in this book -- based on its title, I really thought it would be more helpful in the planning process of a major trip. However, as it turns out, the authors were fairly well-off, which is essentially what allowed them to do their round-the-world trip. (They lived on the cheap while abroad, but had a huge chunk of change to come home to.) While I don't hold their wealth against them, it certainly doesn't help shoestring-budget me -- basically, their "advice" came down to, "First, save up $125,000..." :) There are some useful charts in the back, & lists of travel and packing advice -- however, a good 95% of the book is the story of their actual trip. Also, as would be expected, the financial details are about 10 years old, so of little use now. In summary -- it's fun to read about the trip, but it doesn't really give the kind of advice that the title would lead you to expect.

If you are one of the 7 million people who will take a cruise in the coming year, then Theodore W. Scull's book, "100 Best Cruise Vacations," will be a good value. There are thousands of cruises to select from with various destinations, itineraries, ship size and cost.

So which ones are the best value for the money? Which cruises have the best food, personnel, programs, accommodations, design and layouts? In Scull's book, you are introduced to his selection of the world's best.

From small ships plying the Amazon or Yangzee Rivers to the behemoth liners of 110,000 tons and 2,600 passengers, Scull provides a comprehensive description of the 100 best cruises by explaining the ship and the itinerary in straightforward commentary. A side bar with pertinent information breakdown accompanies each cruise description. I especially like the thorough contact information provided to get additional information for each cruise, which includes website addresses.

I was disappointed that there were no maps detailing where the cruise travels geographically. Likewise, I was annoyed with the absence of any tables or lists that would break down cruises versus their cost. Thus, if you are looking for a five-day cruise for less than $1,000, you must wade through all 100 listings and their cross reference to a dollar sign icon, which designates five levels of cost ranging from $100 to $600 per day (including accommodations, per person, double occupancy, outside cabin), then guess the cruise cost.

Scull, a travel writer, has given us a useful resource with which to make a better qualitative choice when deciding on a vacation cruise. Worth the small investment when considering the financial outlay that any cruise these days will be. Recommended.

This book is exactly what you would expect it to be given the title: a book dedicated exclusively to 100 cruises that are the best in the world in the author's opinion. I agree with him more often than not, but some of the cruises are a bit esoteric and definitely out of the mainstream (particularly the China information), which is fine as long as you understand that is what you are getting here. Many fine itineraries are reviewed here with information on passenger demographics, activities, and cost presented in fine fashion.

My biggest quibbles with the book's format is the lack of maps illustrating the geography of the trip to help get a better handle on where the itineraries actually go, and the lack of an easy to use cost index, which is a factor for many of us considering the astronomical costs of many of these cruises. As always, personal taste often dictates an individual's opinion of certain cruises. For instance, I prefer Celebrity's "Horizon" over their "Zenith," (which Mr. Scull prefers) for a Bermuda cruise.

This is a fine book overall, if somewhat of a 'dream book.' It is excellent for generating ideas for new destinations and ships, and fills it's niche very well. If you are looking for more comprehensive cruise information, I would recommend "Berlitz Ocean Cruising and Cruise Ships 2003" by Douglas Ward as probably the single best cruise reference available, as it is amazingly complete.

Let me tell you the box story: I received a strangely-shaped box from RPS. It was tall and looked like 3 or 4 posters could fit inside, rolled-up & standing upright.

I opened it to find something wrapped in plain, brown Kraft paper. (NO -- I didn't order any porno or sleazy stuff! )

Inside were 2 books I had requested from Actium Publishing to review.

The box thing was a suggested promotional idea straight from this book. Right on page 27, Gielgun, suggests that a package in an unusual shape will catch the eye of a customer and make them focus on what it is you're sending them.

He suggests using an ice cream box & enclosing sales materials that might begin, "We just wanted to sweeten your day." You can get white cake & cookie boxes from bakery supply houses. Or gold boxes; that would be attention getting!

How about those Chinese food take-out boxes? They're not expensive.

"A New York based entrepreneur has sent half-envelopes to his potential customers. He cut regular # 10 envelopes in half and sent only one side (glue-sealed at the "open" end) to prospects. The reply rate to these bisected envelopes was 20% to 30% higher as compared with the whole ones." (p. 27)

The box is the reason this book is being reviewed so soon. Once I got it open I just had to start thumbing through the book -- the bright red cover helps, too -- and ideas kept catching my eye.

Next thing I knew, I'd gone though almost 2/3 of the book! From there, writing this review was easy.

I'll never underestimate the power of provocative packaging again.

Broken into 11 chapters, the tips are organized in areas such as:

=> mail order => trade shows & fairs => overseas => wholesale => cold calling => online => & more

When I say tips, don't think I mean 1 or 2 line descriptions. Each idea takes an entire page & many augment the main idea by providing multiple related suggestions.

The best way to show how the book works is to give some abridged examples.

IDEA --New Broom Sweeps Clean (p. 15)

"If your prospects are corporations, and if you want to get on their receptive side, contact the new, rather than long-time employees. Employees who have been with a company for many years tend to stick to work routines and practices which have proven to work for them, and are not very receptive to new ideas."

IDEA -- Find Yourself a Moniker (p. 28)

"For prospects & customers to remember you, the name of your business may not be enough. Develop a professional handle that would convey in a catchphrase the essence of your business. " Example: 'The Tune-Up Maestro' for a car repair shop.

This works because I can't forget a course (the Clinical Action Guide) I bought from Drew Eric Whitman, DRS -- 'Direct Response Surgeon'Ô. He even went so far as to have his sales materials carry a picture of him in surgical scrubs, masked, & holding a scalpel.

IDEA -- Make Your Competitors' Advertising Budget Work for You (p. 94)

Here's a simple way to take customers away from your competitors: accept their coupons, and make it known that consumers will get from you the same discounts or incentives your competitors offer in their ads."

IDEA -- First Year Club (p. 102)

As the owner of a business start-up, your first, most pressing goal is the creation of a solid customer base. One way to create repeat customers from the very start is by offering new customers a 5% discount for life on all your products and services."

IDEA -- Business That Close Down No Longer Need Their Telephone Numbers (p. 114)

This is a little know fact, it seems, or how else can we explain the millions of good phone numbers that go to an early grave together with their owners every year? A business telephone number almost always has some life left in it." If a rival business goes down the tubes, get that number as your own.

I don't want to give away too much here because Gielgun deserves that his book be purchased. Just let it be clear, these ideas & all the others are more detailed than I've written here.

The reason I say this book's level is beginner/intermediate is it's almost 50-50, for me at least, between ideas I've come across before & those totally new to me. The low price makes it affordable to the more experienced marketer.

But, if you're a very savvy marketing maven, this book is probably too elementary for you.

As with all things Internet related, there's nothing new in the 'Online' chapter of the book. It's useful only for the newbie.

Not every idea in this book is right for everyone, but you'll always find several dozen ideas that'll work for you, and each one of these alone makes purchasing this book a worthwhile investment. Some of the suggestions in this book are so simple and make so much sense it made me wonder how come I never thought of them myself -- there are opportunities around us that we simply don't see until someone points them out to us.

This book has some great tips, but when it comes to achieving corporate and community visibility, nothing replaces a *personal* publicity plan. To position your small business, you have to position YOURSELF. It's inexpensive and critical to your success in the marketplace. Bottom line is that people have to know who you are, what you stand for, and why they should do business with you.

Misleading Title for a Hodgepodge of Essays on (Mostly) Cult Classics

Review Date: 2008-10-31
It has to be said that the title of this latest compilation from the National Society of Film Critics is more than a little misleading. Pretty much every major dictionary defines the phrase "B Movie" in more or less the same terms: a low budget film, often of poor quality, originally made to accompany the main feature in a double billing. However, in the introduction to this collection of brief essays, the editors provide completely different definition: "Today, we assert in this volume, [the B Movie] is a more inclusive category, embracing films that fall out of the mainstream by dint of their budgets, their visions, their grit, and frequently...their lack of what the culture cops call 'good taste.'" This is a definition so vague and sweeping that one could fit almost any film under its umbrella, which renders it a totally meaningless. A more accurate title could be made by chopping off the front of the book's subtitle, leaving "Cult Classics We Love" -- although even that doesn't account for some of the non-cult movies discussed ("The Core" and "Platoon" being notable examples).

The book contains about sixty essays, only five of which appear to be exclusive to the book, with the rest having previously been published in various magazines and web outlets. The editors have tried gamely to group the essays into ten sections, some of which make sense (Film Noir, Neo-Noir, Science Fiction, Horror, Westerns) and some of which don't (Political Pictures, Cult Classics, Midnight Movies). I could have done without such attempts to categorize and would have been glad to take the movies in chronological order. This might allow the reader to trace some interesting cultural shifts along the way instead of finding the films shoehorned into preassigned categories. Almost all the obvious recent "cult" films are included (eg. Pink Flamingos, Rocky Horror, etc.), but even readers of the type who would be attracted to such a book will likely find plenty to add to their Netflix queue. (Personally, I've seen roughly 2/3 of the films covered in the essays.)

As with any book of this nature, the essays vary wildly in both tone and quality, from thoughtful and probing analysis to rah-rah fanboyisms. It has to be said that there are far too many essays that reveal the particulars of the plot. So, if you don't like spoilers, you're better off taking the table of contents as your viewing guide, and not reading about a film until you've seen it. Still, on the whole, a decent little mainstream introduction to some of American cinema's intriguing nooks and crannies.

The reviews are brief but wow did they do a great job picking the films to be in this collection. Being an editor for the Film Noir of the Week blog I was interested in the film noir and neo-noir films in the book and they don't disappoint. Some excellent writers here. An excellent addition to my film book collection.

In Praise of Low-Budget Beauties

Sequelitis struck books long before it began to strike movies, but books about movies seem particularly prone to follow-ups; a condition, perhaps, of cinema's perpetual status as a work in progress. (Never mind digital video, when do we get the holographic porn?)

A few years ago, the National Society of Film Critics compiled THE A LIST (Da Capo, 2002), a collection of rah-rah essays in praise of "100 essential films." By way of answering the question, "what does it mean to call a film 'essential'?", the canonical directors were given an essay or two apiece: Kubrick, Ozu, Ford, Murnau, Godard, Scorcese, Kiarostami, et cetera; but hip as alternative newsweekly film critics tend to be, their A list already included plenty of B movie landmarks, including an Anthony Mann western, a Douglas Sirk melodrama, George Romero's "Night of the Living Dead" (the only film awarded two essays, one in each book), and the big screen debuts of pop culture icons Bruce Lee and Elvis Presley.

The editors of the present volume take hipness as their starting point. No budget is too shoestring, no story too derivative of earlier movies, no hero too ambivalent towards (or contemptuous of) authority for the National Society, whose members, collectively defining the term "film snob", are at their best when reading politics, preferably anti-establishment, into the bottom half of a double bill; at their weakest when claiming to find echoes of Shakespearean romance in "Son of Kong" (1933). (If you're hungry for political film criticism, don't miss Peter Biskind's classic book "Seeing Is Believing: How Hollywood Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Fifties".) They wear their enthusiasms on their scruffy sleeves.

That enthusiasm, and the wit and the hard-edged love with which it's expressed, is what makes this book so damned entertaining. Consider the challenge of identifying a cinematic sub-genre with only the dubious aesthetic parallels between Francis Ford Coppola's "The Conversation" (1974) and the Quentin Tarentino/Robert Rodriguez twofer, "Grindhouse" (2007) to guide you.

The editors have divided the fifty-nine chosen films into eleven categories, from the obvious (film noir, road movies) to the amorphous ("political pictures", anyone?), with the Sadean ethos of provocation and transgression informing every page in the book. Of course THE B LIST wouldn't be worth a damn if it didn't make you want to pop movie after movie into your DVD drive, and it succeeds at this with a vengeance. Whether "Gun Crazy" or "Two-Lane Blacktop" or "The Brother From Another Planet" were really all that good the last time I saw them is almost beside the point. I certainly wasn't thinking about them like this, and that's the beauty of good (i.e., passionate, well-written, philosophically and aesthetically informed) criticism. It's eye-opening in every sense of the term.

I admit, I read the book about 2 years ago, but, I will remember the hard cold facts. The American public is so misinformed about how the miltary is spending our money. It is very disturbing to find out what I thought was true. Blank Check, opened my eyes a lot wider. Did you ever really think the government was honest with us and congress? Don't believe it.

I know the author personally, from his time as the New York Times investigative journalist responsible for covering the US national and military intelligence programs, and I consider him one of the most balanced, thoughtful, and well-intentioned reporters in the intelligence field.

His book remains very, very important because the Pentagon is in the process of reconstituting the "Yellow Fruit" organization, with the same blank check black budget, and the same mind-sets that previously led to enormous ineffectiveness, waste, and some outright corruption and theft of government funds. Known as Gray Fox, this new incarnation of Yellow Fruit has Richard Secord, one of the leaders or the Iran-Contra scandal for which several top personalities were indicted and some convicted, as a primary player.

Tim Weiner's book is important, it is relevant, and it should be read by those responsible for the oversight of military intelligence budgets and capabilities--and by citizens who might wish to question their elected representatives on this important topic.

Money talks! And does it have a story to tell!

Blank Check is a meticulously researched and chilling account of how the Cold War led the nation into a frenzy of spending based on fear and propaganda. The book spans 40 years of government development and National crises from the viewpoint of a checkbook. However, the fact that the book was published before the fall of the Soviet Union means that, to a modern reader, the stories told are a frightening look at times gone by rather than a relevant commentary on modern life. Also, with no central character to latch onto the book, while conscience stirring, is not necessarily compelling. That said, revelations in this book about the government's outright violation of the constitution in the name of National Security still have the ability to leave a reader appalled.
