An enduringly useful reference

Nowhere has the phenomena of the Internet made as enduring an impact as on the storage and retrieval of information. This is particularly true for libraries, be they public, academic, corporate, governmental, or private. Collaboratively compiled and deftly co-edited by information science experts Teresa Dalston and Michael Pullin, "Virtual Reference On A Budget: Case Studies" is a 216-page compendium of 'user friendly' instruction on creating a virtual reference service in libraries by taking full advantage of Internet and World Wide Web resources without the necessity for purchasing expensive hardware and software. Of special note are the practical and easily accessible resources available to library media specialists for persuading their library boards and library administrators on the value, importance, and utility of a 'virtual' reference service for their staff members and their patrons. A superbly organized and presented manual for K-12 library media and technology specialists, readers will learn how to provide virtual reference services to special and diverse patron populations such as hearing-impaired students, the elderly, student researchers, and others. Profusely illustrated with tables and figures, "Virtual Reference On A Budget" is an essential and strongly recommended addition to academic library "Library Science" reference collections, and an enduringly useful reference for practicing librarians seeking to maximize advantages in behalf of their library patrons and staff members with respect to what the Internet has to offer (and how best to access it) within the context of a library setting.

Very intriguing approach to balancing the federal budget. Mr. Friedman's thoughts were actually implemented in part by Congress, saving the taxpayers approximately $60 Billion over five years. Easy to read, although Mr. Friedman takes a few controversial positions.

Wow! A great and funny eye opener.

Ok, so this book was quite an eye opener and had hilarious moments when it came to suggesting ways we could have used the money we have spent fighting in Iraq. I loved every minute of it. It is a quick read or one that you can come back to in bites. The author has quite an easy and ironic tone of voice throughout. It was fun without being preachy, and its true call to action for every American to hold their government accountable will hopefully get us all to act.

It was funny and sad all at the same time.

This book was really simple and yet so practical. The section on setting up your own custom budget was so simple. By following some of the suggestions we were able to save enough money that my wife could stay at home and our finances were not so tight.

Most books on saving money are so dry and difficult to read. This one was really easy to read and full of great ideas and funny stories. I would recommend this book to anyone.

I wasn't confused about matching food and wine anymore!

I had read this author's wine and food criticism over several years, but some of it was intended for people more sophisticated about wine than I am. Here he uses his knowledge to speak directly to those of us who are sometimes puzzled by what wine to choose for a particular dish prepared at home or in a restaurant. I found especially useful his recommendation of wines at three different price points for each food match. I refer to this book over and over again.

Disorganized Wedding Bargains

Review Date: 2008-10-04
This book has great ideas, but I would NOT recommend reading it from start to finish as soon as you get it. The book is packed w/so much information that it is overwhelming at first, especially for a newly engaged bride. And the book tends to paint a negative picture of the wedding industry, which left me feeling somewhat hopeless. Rather I found it most helpful to read in sections when I was working out the details for specific parts of the wedding such as attire, reception, ceremony, etc. The oddest thing about the book is that it jumps around from one topic to another in a disorganized fashion. The chapters are broken down into topics, but the authors allude to other parts of the book in each chapter of it.

Bridal Bargains gave me SO many fantastic money saving ideas. I will use this book as a guide throughout our entire wedding planning process. Some ideas were ingenious (It helped me fine my dream wedding gown for only $124 - You CANNOT beat a bargain like that!!) The book offers many questions to ask that are probably very often overlooked, tactful ways to ask them, a WIDE spectrum of ideas for every aspect of your wedding (Ex. From do-it-yourself Ipod wedding to full fledged orchestra) What's to lose!! (Other than a couple hundred dollars off your wedding budget of course :)

This is a great book for Bride's to have. There is a lot of information you would have never thought of threw out this book. When you invest in your wedding, you should add this book in your budget.

I found this book to be extremely helpful in terms of scams to watch out for, unexpected places to look for bargains, etc. I also found it helped get me thinking outside the box in terms of decorations, music, etc - not only to save money, but also to make my wedding fun and unique. I would recommend complementing it with at least 1-2 other books, though. Personally, I am using one etiquette book and one detail-oriented planning book to keep everything running smoothly.
