Aid to Find Course & Contact Info
Helpful Votes: 10 out of 10 total.
Review Date: 2006-07-19
Have found this resource (this the seventh edition) to be very useful especially in finding course when traveling. My wife and I have used this to great benefit when traveling out of state, and through it have found some delightful courses, resorts, etc.

What is unique about it is a state-by-state ranking of golf courses (public and resort) by players who have supposedly played them in last year. Rating them from 1 to 5 stars, comments are also included. Those with less than 3 star rating have only basic contact info. What is new with this edition is grouping courses within a 30 mile radius of major town, while those that don't meet this requirement are placed into an "Elsewhere" category. This aids greatly in desiring courses in a certain area. Whereas in older editions, one had to tediously search through all the state's listing to find desired area. Here that grouping has been nicely accomplished.

Found that most of the ratings help, knowing however that it typically is being rated by golfers who enjoy that course's challenges, e.g. high handicapper will rate 5300 yd. course from back tips high while mid to low handicapper would differ typically. So, assuming this when viewing the ratings will aid the particular golfer and his skill and course tastes immensely.

I travel alot on business and try to golf while on the road whenever I can (and have now golfed in all 50 states and over 300 courses). This guide (previous editions) has been my constant companion over the years. It offers the most comprehensive and useful advice on finding a good course in any area. The reviews are on-target, and I have never been steered wrong when picking a course based on this book. In addition, I am a "cheap" golfer, who hates to play courses over $50 a round - this book helps pick the best course for the buck. The information provided (address, phone#, distance from major city center, when opened, architect, #holes, #yards, course rating, slope, Green Fee, Cart Fee, Credit Cards taken, Discounts, How far in Advance Tee Time can be booked, Walkability, Season, Notes and Golfer comments) is everything you need. It also has a city and alphabetical index of courses. The only information sometimes out of date, are the fees. But it offers website addresses for the courses, so you can get more up-to-date green fee info, or more details on the course. The 7th Edition beats the 6th, by organizing courses by metropolitan areas within each state, with an "Elsewhere" section for the more rural areas. For instance, for Nebraska, it is separate by Kearney/Grand Island, Lincoln, Omaha and Elsewhere, beside adding new courses. My only gripe is that I wish it were updated more often, as new courses are springing up everywhere. Finally, the quality and durability of the book are excellent, as it has held up to much travel abuse and wear. If you travel alot and want to know the best courses to play in the area, there is no better book or website. Note: The picture of the cover of the book in the Amazon ad is not correct (it is the 6th edition). The 7th edition has a golfer in a red shirt without a hat in a similar pose . Also, I got 12 free months of Golf Digest with the book, which made its value even more worthwhile.

I have 3 other Daisy King cookbooks (didn't she have a restaurant several years ago in Nashville called "Miss Daisy's"? This one is definitely my favorite. It not only gives lots of ideas for party planning, presentation, drinks, and ideas for parties, but there is a menu section, in addition to items by category. My book is well worn and stained, and I love it. Am always passing along recipes I use, like my favorite "Chicken and Wild Rice Casserole", I've never had anything like it. This is a must for me around any holiday time and for ladies' meetings. It may have been published in 1994, but still great today!

I own a lot of cook books but this is the one I come back to over and over again. Whenever I entertain or need to make something for a potluck I go back to Daisy King's book. Each Christmas I make her cream cheese pound cake and my husband adores the corn pudding because it tastes remarkably like his grandmothers. Find a used copy of this book because you just can't go wrong with it.

A very good guide to film making
Helpful Votes: 16 out of 17 total.
Review Date: 2005-03-03
Basically this book is a three part book. The start of the book goes into the film making process, what it is about, why bother and how to get started. It gives you a general air of what is going on before a film starts shooting.

The middle part of the book is extremely technically useful. Don't be put-off by the fact that it is a British book, most of the standards are the same and the writer covers both US systems and UK systems. Anyway the value of this book is in that the writer interviews very important people that work in the filming process - actors, special effects, film lab, cameramen, editors, sound editors, legal agencies, projectionists, marketing people, producers, directors... etc.... and they all give very profesional tips on what you should do and what you should NOT do.

The third part of the book deals with CASE STUDIES and various filmmakers talk about their projects and what went right and what went wrong.

Overall this is a very good book with lots of information from the people that matter in this industry. There is a lot of information on what NOT to do when shooting your first film. Anybody who wants to get into to film making should not miss out on this writer/director's account of his experiences with film making.

I am only Half of the way thru this book so far, but this is INCREDIBLE. Its actually giving me a head ache, how much information this guy has crammed into his book. The graphics, illustrations and photos are all excellent, and even the cartoons (which I normally HATE) are good. It helps that the chick is kinda cute!

Every chapter gives you a "blueprint" of what you need to know about that specific part of movie-making. Sound, camera, make-up, music, setting up a company, editing, casting, it's all there. There's even a chapter on catering which includes recipes for film crews, it's brilliant. Another good thing is that the writing is laugh-out-loud funny sometimes, you can really tell that this guy has been thru the mill when it comes to making no-budget movies. This book is a breath of fresh air. If you don't believe me, go to a book store and flick through it. If you walk out without buying it, I'll be amazed.

I love this book because it is very practical. I just love practical things. The book uses real life situations. It considers real factors affecting businesses, individuals, and other organizations in today's world. I can say that it is a business book with a lot of motivational emphasis.
Some of us do not know that there are people who will kill to have what we have. Many of us do not know the value of what we have. The book covers a wide range of human/business/organization issues, but the spiritual settings are confidently infused to boost the appreciation of your life and achievement level. I love this book.

Film Making Made Simple and on a Budget
Helpful Votes: 3 out of 3 total.
Review Date: 2008-08-23
If you work in a cubicle dreaming of making a movie that others like you actually want to see, this guy got his movies into film festivals and beyond, made a profit and he did it on extremely low budgets. He is completely honest about how such a low budget can keep a film from being accepted at a film festival and how to get past such an obstacle. With today's technology: A Mac, Final Cut Express, a a Canon XL-1, other equipment you can purchase on ebay or rent for almost nothing... With a staff that you can help by giving them the opportunity to act (something a lot of people want to get a chance at doing) while paying staff through a temp firm that handles things like workers comp, etc. ... David Curran explains, in a way that keeps your interest, step by step how to make a movie on a low budget in broadcast quality. In addition, he gives simple tips on real special effects that cost virtually nothing. Buy this rather than just dreaming. David Curran not only knows his stuff, but he cares about your dreams.

Excellent tips and an enjoyable read!

Kathryn has done a beautiful job giving a detailed way of promoting your book without investing a ton of finances. She starts at the beginning of doing your background work to the end of checking your checklist and checking it twice. There is alot of meat and insightful material in between the two that will give any author fantastic insight of how to promote your material without spending a bundle.
Thanks Kathryn for writing from your knowledge, experiences and research to help others move along quicker to get their material promoted and out into readers hands.

This is a great starter reference for the novice. The guidance is sound, and Lisa Hunter's enthusiasm is contagious. A few color photographs would have been nice, but wisely this book focuses on cultivating the reader's own intelligence and knowledge rather than dictating taste. If you have ever been interested in starting an art collection of your own, or buying that Kashmiri silk rug, a little research is a good thing. This is a grand place to start.

I love art but I've always felt nervous buying art. How do you know if you're getting the real thing? How do you know if you're overpaying? What's that rug really worth? Why is a photograph worth so much? What's the difference between a valuable vintage photograph and a copy of it that looks exactly the same? No one can tell you what a piece of art will be worth in ten years, but Ms. Hunter explains how to go about buying the real thing (and avoid buying fakes) -- and why you should buy the real thing. I feel much more confident about buying a few pretty things for the house now.

A Must-read Blueprint for all Inventors
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 1 total.
Review Date: 2008-01-31
This book is a wealth of information and a must-read for anyone embarking on the journey of inventing. As the title suggests - this book addresses a problem that plagues many inventors - how to go about protecting and bringing a product to market with little or no finances. The information provided by these proven authors details the steps you need to take to make your dreams and ambitions a reality, along the way debunking myths like the "poor man's patent" (mailing your ideas in a sealed and dated envelope, page 48). If you have a great idea and looking for guidance, this is a sound blueprint clearly written from the point of view of experience and I highly recommend it.
