someone i read recently, maybe rowson in a column, points out that the way people use the word 'theory' and 'theoretical' in chess has almost the opposite meaning that it has in every other academic field. what chessplayers mean by theory is actually more like "recorded practice." this makes sense to me, and really what i think the chess community is trying to convey by using the word theory is more like "difficult" or "beyond the capacities of undedicated people."
my point in bringing this up is that eingorn's book is what should really be called theory. (don't let that scare you off, it's a beautiful, thoughtful, exciting book, and not insanely difficult.) it tackles the broader ideas in opening theory from a historical and philosophical perspective (i want to say sociologic as well, but that's perhaps ridiculous?), the way openings develop and what causes this. the games are nicely annotated and instructive, but the real strength is the clarity with which eingorn sees the big picture of chess.
i loved watson's books and rowson's; this one is on the same level.

This book is a perfect refresher course. It helps pull the various concepts of critical care together. The concise question-answer format keeps you from having to search through pages and pages to get the answer you want.

If you are taking the test... You NEED these flashcards! I made the mistake of borrowing someone's CLAD materials, only to find out that much of the information was great for a foundation only because it was out-of-date for the new requirements. I received the flashcards less than a week before the test and still had enough time to get a strong understanding of the material. I am hoping for no retakes... I'll update in August once I receive the scores!

A neighbor gave me a copy... I'm so glad he did! I read this book in one day which I never do.

A Cut Above is the autobiographical story of the author's determination to make a better life for himself and his family. The son of a black Savannah Georgian mill worker McBride's story is not simply a story of inventing and growing a business. His story also includes accounts of unfair discrimination which was prevalant at the time. This is not a bitter story. It simply illustrates what an intelligent young black entrepreneur was up against in the 1960's and 1970's. Those with a desire to start their own business from scratch will find this book inspirational.

Many references to Atlanta and Savannah, GA as this is where the bulk of the story occurs.

A wonderful malange of the sarcastic and the educational. A realistic assessment of medicine and the physical exam as it really exists outside the textbooks and excellent pearls on it and other medical subjects. I learned a great deal from it.

Don't buy this if you lack a sense of humor or have an overly sanctimonious view of the practice of medicine.

Extremely helpful, very precise and right to the point. This book made me ace the exam. I highly recommend it. If you want to do exceptionally well make sure to read this review book. The format of the questions and the writing is so amazing in a way that makes you remember everything. I guess that the name deja review is right on.

This book was by far the best micro review I had for boards! It gave me all the information I needed without meaningless minutia and was VERY high-yield for boards. I used it for my micro class during the year and it really helped, especially with group studying. The question-answer format is a great way to test yourself before exams and I found it to be a comprehensive review before I took boards. I recommend it to every med student looking for a thorough review for micro.

A friend of mine bought me this book, knowing I'm interested inthe field, also knowing that I know nothing about Dental Assisting.It was easy enough for a beginner to learn the basics through the advanced. EXCELLENT.

I recently had to study for the Radiation Health and Safety exam. I borrowed a copy of this book to quiz my knowledge on the subject. I plan on buying a copy to keep for myself. I not only strenghtened the knowledge I already had, but I also learned facts that I wasn't aware of. This book is detailed and extremely easy to use. The answers are given with an explaination. Any one that is studying for a test or anyone that just wants to keep sharp on a subject will benefit from this book.

This is a simply written book that introduces young children to the procedures that take place during a doctors visit, and stresses the importance of going to the doctor regularly. It explains the doctors office in a straightforward manner (i.e. admitting that getting shots WILL hurt a bit) so kids won't feel tricked, but it also shows the positive outcomes of such procedures (a girl picking out a sticker as a reward after her shot). Cute and honest, while hopefully making trips to the doctors less daunting for little ones!
