Dean Smith - A Blueprint for Leading Your Life!
Helpful Votes: 4 out of 4 total.

Dean was an unbelievable coach who was able to participate in an incredibly competitive arena, yet make consistent decisions with his values and beliefs, never compromising those ideals, even in the heat of battle. The way he created the Carolina family, always remembering everybody who ever played, managed and worked with the team is truly amazing. Keep this book by your bedside and refer to it often.

Dean is surprisingly quotable

I like this new book about Dean Smith a lot. Smith was famous in his press conferences for rambling on and on and not saying much of anything quotable, but the author (David Scott) has painstakingly culled Smith down to a point where the excellent coach sounds funnier, blunter and more insightful than he is often given credit for. This book would be a superb addition to a Carolina fan's library, and Lord knows there are a few of them out there.

Review of Microbiology and Immunology

Perfect for medical microbio class. I used Micro Made easy for class, and after reading this book to review for the boards I would definately recommend it over Micro made easy. The organization is better, it's a shorter text, has an outline format, has excellent tables that while are not as detailed as the micro made easy book are a lot easier to read, and it has everything you need to know for class, which micro made easy does not.

Immuno section is a bit brief but it has all the essentials. I would also recommend reading Immunobiology by Janeway and Medical Microbiology by Murray. Both texts are outstanding and really help you appreciate the subjects.

Simply the best microbiology review book

This book is great. It covers everything you need to know for step 1, while leaving out all you dont' need to know. The questions are probably the best micro vignette questions out there, and helps reinforce what you learned from the book.
This book is much better than micro made ridiculously simple in terms of boards review. Its written in outline format so you can get through it much faster, and it includes an immunology section that has all you need to know for the immunology questions on the step.

The only thing I don't like is the Rapid Review format. At times the outline format should be written in complete sentences (like the high-yield series) to avoid confusing statments/facts. For me, this seemed especially true in the immunology section, which can be confusing if you have a weak immuno background.

Other than that, this is a great review book. The only review book for micro in my opinion.

A one-of-a-kind history of medicine

The copy of "Rats, Lice, and History" that I own was published in 1963, and this was the 33rd time it had been reissued since first appearing in 1934. I can't imagine Dr. Zinsser's grumpily discursive, masterfully written, and ultimately profound biography of typhus fever ever going completely out of print. Stylistically the only work I can compare it to is Gibbon's "Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire". Where Gibbon occasionally dipped his pen in vinegar and excoriated the Christians, Zinsser dips his pen in hydrochloric acid and savages all of the quaint human customs that have kept Typhus alive and thriving. He shows much more affectionate sympathy for the louse than he does for the General or the Politician.

In the interests of research, Zinsser carried pill boxes of lice under his socks for weeks at a time before taking "advantage of them for scientific purposes." He is not able to tear himself away from these little creatures and address the true subject of his biography, i.e. the typhus germ, until Chapter 12!

However, the journey to Chapter 12 is well worth taking because along the way, Zinsser wittily savages modern biographers, psychoanalysis, astronomers and physicists who "scamper back to God" (Biologists evidently are much less prone to being 'born again'), and of course, all of the wars that have given Typhus countless opportunities to murder lice and humans alike.

"Rats, Lice, and History" should be required reading for would-be writers for its style, would-be Generals for its lessons on how soldiers really die, and for anyone else who is interested in a passionate, eminently witty, one-of-a-kind history of medicine.

One would read this for its wit, alone, but the subject matter is fascinating. Dr. Zinsser wrote for the New Yorker for many years under the nom de plume of RS. This 1935 book will still be read, with pleasure, a century from now.

Excellent book for an introduction to CAM

Kathleen Wren and Carol Norred have produced a lovely, clear, easy to use survey of a helpful range of CAM therapies. It is organized by pharmacologic and non-pharmacologic therapies, with concise explanations of the modality, indications, side effects, precautions, indications, contraindications, and key words to remember. Winsome and humorous cartoon figures counterpoint the reading. A review section presents a playful series of crossword puzzles and other word exercises that will help readers assess and firm up their knowledge about each therapy.

This is an excellent book for anyone wanting an introduction to CAM.

Ample references for further reading provide doorways for delving deeper.

These books are a pleasure to read and to look at !

This series of books are the favourite with my 9 month old daughter and me ! We have been enjoying these books for about four months now. I even recite them to my little girl when we are out walking to squeals of delight.

I have borrowed a lot of books from the library, so you could say I have done a lot of "road testing". I find the Daisy series to be in a different league to everything else. The illustrations in the Daisy series are delightful and the words are like poetry.

My 11-month-old loves this book!

This is one of my son's favorite books. It is usually the first book he pulls off the shelf. The oversized pages allow more room for the wonderful watercolor illustrations. The text is very simple, but the pictures allow you to embellish the story as desired. I wouldn't have predicted how much he enjoys this book--but I've bought all the Daisy books now and he clearly prefers them to many other books. He also loves seeing "Daisy" on the pond by our house.

This book has been a great help with my preparation for my ASCP certification test. I learned so much from this book and the questions were very similar to the questions on the test. The lab I work in has had fun with this book also. I really suggest this book for anyone who has to take the phlebotomy ASCP certification test.

A book can not be responsible for humanity development imposibilities. If there are no cures for many disease, like psoriasis, there are though much more disease control therapies than in the past. One should remember that a few decades ago, syphilis, leprosy, and many others diseases were important mortality and morbity causes, and the development of knowledge and dermatology dramatically changed the natural history of theses diseases.
Many other skin diseases became curable and many others are responsible to newer therapies, with unquestionable quality of life improvement for many people with skin diseases all over the world.
Rook is a classic. It is the most important reference dermatology has.
If one compares different editions, will be a testemony of incredible clinical dermatology evolution since last century
