I used this book in a practical course in medicinal chemistry. Although we had a series of other suggested texts, this was by far the best book we used. Its written clearly and would be fine for a beginning student. The sample problems are nicely worked out and they don't assume that you know everything already. It doesn't do the most thourough job of explaining the theory behind the experimental approaces, but it would suffice for a beginning course in med chem.

Being worked with the author myself I am maybe a bit too partial to write this review. However, since the book has had no review so far, I felt compelled to write something. This book is full of good practical examples of instrumental methods applied to pharmaceutical analysis, writen by someone who had taken the time to actually DO most of the experiments from which the book is based. Not deep into theory, but very good for those seeking practical and sound advice.

Physical Diagnosis Secrets is an excellent book that really complements many Internal Medicine textbooks. Many of those books do not really cover diagnosis in a user friendly way but Dr. Mangione's book offers an amazing amount of information concisely. He even offers the historical background for many of the eponymous terms like Korotkoff sounds.

It will improve really your diagnostic skill

One of the best examples of how wonderful is the secret series for medical studend and for the experienced physician.
I especially appreciated how the book tries to eliminate traditional but useless examination maneuvers and tries to clarify sensitivity and specificity of the usefull ones.
You will indeed discover dozens of usefull examination hints and secrets you absolutely don't know (unless you are Mangione).
It is also written in a pleasant and amusing way.
I will never sell mine.

The points you might otherwise miss
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 1 total.
Review Date: 2004-06-16
Anyone studying physiology has gone through the frustration of learning some complex pathway, but never understanding its significance. Physiology Secrets steps up that understanding by posing questions about many of the big points that are often missed. The question and answer format is wonderful for sparking thought on each subject, and the concise yet detailed answers give students what they need to assess their level of understanding. It's too dense a book to read all at once, but is excellent to use while studying a particular organ system or mechanism.

Great Book

With the help of this book, I went from failing physiology to "honoring" every physiology test since. I can't stress enough how much Physiology Secrets helped out. It's like having your own personal tutor asking you key questions and then explaining the answers completely and clearly. If I were a professor of Physiology, I would make this required reading. Too bad, this book is now out of print. Try to get your copy while you can.

Physiology secrets is both quick and textbook-detailed.

This book does a great job of presenting the core material of medical physiology along with some subtle nuances that most students do not have time to learn. I would recomend this book to any medical students that want to master physiological medicine without wasting time or missing the relevance of the material to clinical practice.
Excelent, as quick as a review book, but as detailed as a textbook.

Very thorough but limited in scope

Flight training is an excellent book for a very thorough explanation of how and why and airplain flys, and for the basic flight maneuvers you are likely to use as a new pilot. (And those you are likely to encounter in the practical test) I discovered by accident though, that this text DOES NOT cover things such as: proper radio communication, use of the e6-b(I hope I wrote that correctly), aviation weather, controled airspace, FARs, navigation, or really anything else related to being a private pilot other than the actual mechanics of flying.

To get that you must also purchase his title: The Pilot's Manual - The Private and Commercial.

I have finished reading Flight Training came to Amazon to Private and Commercial and It is not listed. Hopefully we can rectify that as Trevor Thom is very gifted at explaining things in a manner that don't bore those of us who are technically proficent (sp?) but also would not confuse those who aren't quite so technical.

Setting the pace in flight/pilot instruction manuals.

Thom's insightful coverage of every aspect of Aviation Training is clear once again in this the first of three books on the subject. I'm a student pilot with 40 hours in a C172 and this is the second flight training book (after "Stick and Rudder" by Langewiesche) I got and I am very happy with it. So happy that I went out and got the other 2 books in the series! The illustrations are superb and the writing even better. From stalls to take-offs and landings, every page is effective in explaining what the would-be pilot should expect to see, feel and hear. I can honestly find nothing wrong with this book and his others except that in volume 2, the weather coverage is outdated. Check out Volumes 2 and 3.

Got me through my private, commercial, and CFI

While not as full of full-color photos as the Jeppesen series, this flight training manual is probably the best organized and best illustrated guide I have come across. The lessons are concise and unambiguous. Of course, this book is primarily a preparation for the knowledge test; to learn the maneuvers you'll have to check out "The Pilot's Manual - The Private and Commercial." by the same author.

I used these books to prepare for both my private and commercial certificates. Additionally, I based my lesson plans on the lessons presented in these books while working on my Certified Flight Instructor certificate.

If I could recommend one title to all expecting parents, it would be the Pink Kit. This kit takes you miles and leaps ahead of the cookie cutter approaches to childbirth. It gives you tangible tools for your body... and helps you to learn your body better so you know how to take charge of your own labour and delivery.

Practitioners should read this because it will give you an understanding of childbirth like you have never had before.

The Only Kit a Pregnant Woman Needs

I cannot tell you how important this Kit has been to me personally and professionally. I have read and reviewed literally hundreds of books, videos and other products for birth professionals and birthing women during my career as a doula and childbirth educator - by far this Kit is the best of the best. How many women know - truly know - much about their bodies, how their pelvis moves, how to move their sacrum and tailbone, and thus open their pelvis during labour and birth? Precious few... and that is the essence of this Kit - teaching women about their own pelvis, their own muscles, and how to relax and move their specific pelvis and muscles.

Personally I have had four children, three of them by cesarean section after long and painful labours. I was diagnosed with CPD twice. My fourth child was born vaginally after I learned how to open my pelvic outlet during labour - it was still painful but she literally fell out as I was in a good position that opened my pelvis. Semi-sitting and a deep squat closed my pelvis but a supported squat is what opened my sit bones and I am still elated from the experience five months later.

Professionally I have primarily supported VBAC women in my practice and the knowledge I gained from the Pink Kit has been invaluable to my clients and students. They not only know how to birth, they trust their bodies and their experiences have been greatly enhanced with this knowledge and trust. Please, consider this your FIRST investment in your birth experience and for your baby - trust me, you will thank me, I promise.

DON'T GIVE BIRTH WITHOUT THESE SKILLS!!!

This book is well written and for those that are looking for a comprehensive description of each component for a set of roadway design plans and specifications. Each section provides a good description of what should be included and also what needs to be considered to avoid errors-and-omissions. Sample plan sheets are also very visually helpful. This is a recommended buy for design engineers.

This book is great. As another reviewer said this is perfect for someone right out of college. It is written in an easy to read format. It gives a good general overview and background for each type of plan sheet. Really a must have on your bookshelf. This covers a set of plans from birth to construction and even gives advice to prevent costly construction changes.

Great resource to get ready for the Peds section of the step 2 exam. I was impressed with the depth of discussion on each case that the author somehow managed to trim down to one page. Excellent photos as well. Well-written and definitely very high yield.

Loved this book and the whole series. Great way to review, because this is how the boards are - lots of long clinical vignettes where you have to know not only the diagnosis and treatment, but how to manage it over time. Concise, high yield and easy to understand. Great photos as well. Definitely check this series out.

As a future peds resident, I wanted to do well on the peds boards questions and this book was a big help. The cases are written so you can guess the diagnosis before reading about it on the next page. Well-written with very good explanations and good photos (I finally know what the thumb sign of epiglottitis and an impetigo rash look like!)

Highly recommend.

With the help of T.W. Parnell's Postal Exam Quick Course I was able to take the 460 exam with confidence, receive and outstanding score and get called back for an interview one week after getting my test results in the mail. This book is AWESOME!!! I have purchased other postal study guides but none of them compare to the quality that T.W. Parnell puts out. What you study with T.W. Parnell is practically identical to what is on the Postal tests, so there are no surprises on test day. Did I mention this guide is AWESOME!!!

A must-have for those taking the test

I did not open the book to start studying until the day before the test. I guess I would not recommend you doing that but I am good at cramming. In any case, this book with the cd-roms resulted in me scoring a 100.0 on the test. I knew I aced it when I left the testing center and all the credit goes to the author. Buy the book and practice the tests over and over and you will ace the test, too.

Excellent, easy to use prep course!

I would recommend this quick course to anyone preparing for the Postal Exam 460. I used it to prepare for my test and I scored a 96%. With this score, I received an invitation for orientation within 2 weeks of getting my test results! I am now employed by the USPS and I love my job! This course is easy to understand and follow. Mr. Parnell's strategies are actually quite amazing. His strategies make the impossible parts of the test, very easy. The practice tests are just like the real test and prepare you well. If you use Mr. Parnell's course, you won't be surprised by anything on test day!

I want to be clear that I haven't seen the 2007 Edition yet - however think it's worth posting my review of the 2006 one here - as this is where people will be looking past May.

I spent a few weeks preparing for my CCS-P, using mainly this book's 2006 edition.

It walked me through reviewing coding areas that I needed refreshing on, pointing out to me that, for example, I wasn't as clear as I should be on how to code certain cardiac procedures and needed to spend some time on OB coding.

It gave me all I needed - the sample test questions and cases were right on for the exam. The CD was a bonus - simple interface that walks you through multiple questions. Nice.

So, I passed. Very nicely. In fact, you could say I met and exceeded all the key components for passing (a little bit of coder humor there!).

Thanks, Patricia et al. This really helped me prepare effectively with limited study time. It looks like a huge bit of work to put together - well done.

I loved the fact that the quizzes and test were on the CD disk. You have the option when you are taking the test for it to show you the answers. It explained why you would arrive at those answers. The disk is very helpful for those people that do not like to read a lot of study material when you can actually learn it as you proceed on the disk. All of the material in the book was very informative but I especially liked the Reimbursement section as it shows you how to calculate medicare patients payments and par physicians and non par physicians payments.
Sincerely-Julie
